Swimming without a spine: computational modeling and analysis of the swimming hydrodynamics of the Spanish Dancer

Reversible Curvature Reversal of Monolithic Liquid Crystal Elastomer Film and Its Smart Valve Application

Beyond a traditional stimuli-responsive soft actuator that shows a single motion by a stimulus, multidirectional actuation reversal with a single stimulus is highly required in applications such as shape morphing sensors and soft robotics. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are one of the most attractive candidates for the soft actuator due to their capability of stimuli-responsive shape changing in 3D, which is programmable with local orientation of LC mesogens. Here, a simple but effective method to fabricate monolithic LCE actuators that are capable of reversible curvature reversal in bending and twisting deformation by a single stimulus-heat-is reported. The curvature reversal of the LCE film can be programmed by means of asymmetric crosslinking density along the thickness and the orientation of the LC mesogens. The curvature reversal of the monolithic LCE film exhibits highly reversible (more than 100 times) and fast actuation (≈3-5 s) by heating and cooling, allowing new concept of a practical application using LCE material: a self-regulated smart valve that is capable of qualitatively sorting liquids by temperature. It is believed that this system is potentially applied to a self-regulated sorting platform for various endothermic and exothermic chemical or biological reactions.

A novel cylindrical overlap-and-fling mechanism used by sea butterflies

The clap-and-fling mechanism is a well-studied, unsteady lift generation mechanism widely used by flying insects and is considered obligatory for tiny insects flying at low to intermediate Reynolds numbers, Re However, some aquatic zooplankters including some pteropod (i.e. sea butterfly) and heteropod species swimming at low to intermediate Re also use the clap-and-fling mechanism. These marine snails have extremely flexible, actively deformed, muscular wings which they flap reciprocally to create propulsive force, and these wings may enable novel lift generation mechanisms not available to insects, which have less flexible, passively deformed wings. Using high-speed stereophotogrammetry and micro-particle image velocimetry, we describe a novel cylindrical overlap-and-fling mechanism used by the pteropod species Cuvierina atlantica In this maneuver, the pteropod's wingtips overlap at the end of each half-stroke to sequentially form a downward-opening cone, a cylinder and an upward-opening cone. The transition from downward-opening cone to cylinder produces a downward-directed jet at the trailing edges. Similarly, the transition from cylinder to upward-opening cone produces downward flow into the gap between the wings, a leading edge vortex ring and a corresponding sharp increase in swimming speed. The ability of this pteropod species to perform the cylindrical overlap-and-fling maneuver twice during each stroke is enabled by its slender body and highly flexible wings. The cylindrical overlap-and-fling mechanism observed here may inspire the design of new soft robotic aquatic vehicles incorporating highly flexible propulsors to take advantage of this novel lift generation technique.

Computational modeling of swimming in marine invertebrates with implications for soft swimming robots

Marine flatworms (polyclads) employ a wide variety of body kinematics for swimming. In the current study, we employ computational fluid dynamics to study the hydrodynamics and swimming performance of a large variety of swimmers inspired directly from flatworms as well as two other marine invertebrates: Aplysia and Spanish dancers. The free-swimming performance is evaluated via two metrics: Froude efficiency and terminal swimming speed. The study examines the effect of the flapping of the lateral margins of the body as well as body undulation, which are used in various combinations by these animals to achieve swimming. The simulations suggest that a spanwise compact wake with distinct vortex ring structures is well correlated with a high swimming performance. We find that the addition of even a small magnitude of body undulation to lateral flapping results in significant changes in the wake patterns and noticeable improvements in the swimming performance compared to swimmers that employ only lateral flapping. Periodic body-bending synchronized with lateral flapping, as employed by the Spanish dancer, is found to be a very effective swimming gait. Some gaits that employ body undulations but no lateral flapping are found to generate high swimming speeds but with limited swimming efficiencies. Taken together, this study provides insights that could inform the design of swimming robots.

Bioinspired underwater locomotion of light-driven liquid crystal gels

Soft-bodied aquatic invertebrates, such as sea slugs and snails, are capable of diverse locomotion modes under water. Recapitulation of such multimodal aquatic locomotion in small-scale soft robots is challenging, due to difficulties in precise spatiotemporal control of deformations and inefficient underwater actuation of existing stimuli-responsive materials. Solving this challenge and devising efficient untethered manipulation of soft stimuli-responsive materials in the aquatic environment would significantly broaden their application potential in biomedical devices. We mimic locomotion modes common to sea invertebrates using monolithic liquid crystal gels (LCGs) with inherent light responsiveness and molecular anisotropy. We elicit diverse underwater locomotion modes, such as crawling, walking, jumping, and swimming, by local deformations induced by selective spatiotemporal light illumination. Our results underpin the pivotal role of the physicomechanical properties of LCGs in the realization of diverse modes of light-driven robotic underwater locomotion. We envisage that our results will introduce a toolbox for designing efficient untethered soft robots for fluidic environments.
