Immobilization of Polymers to Surfaces by Click Reaction for Photocatalysis with Recyclability

A surface-bound photocatalyst offers advantages of reusability and recyclability with ease. While it can be immobilized by spin coating or drop-casting, a more reliable and durable method involves the formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on a suitable surface using designer molecules. In this paper, we report devising a practical, durable, and recyclable photocatalytic surface using immobilized polytriazoles of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP). While the SAM formation techniques were utilized for superior results, conventional coatings of polymers on surfaces were performed for comparison. Different methods confirmed efficient immobilization and high grafting density for the SAM technique. Computational models suggested favorable energy parameters for active materials. Photocatalytic studies were performed using both immobilized polymers and polymers in solution for comparison. These findings are important for understanding various physicochemical characteristics of polytriazole-functionalized surfaces.

A rethinking of collagen as tough biomaterials in meat packaging: assembly from native to synthetic

Due to the high moisture-associated typical rheology and the changeable and harsh processing conditions in the production process, packaging materials for meat products have higher requirements including a sufficient mechanical strength and proper ductility. Collagen, a highly conserved structural protein consisting of a triple helix of Gly-X-Y repeats, has been proved to be suitable packaging material for meat products. The treated animal digestive tract (i.e. the casing) is the perfect natural packaging material for wrapping meat into sausage. Its thin walls, strong toughness and impact resistance make it the oldest and best edible meat packaging. Collagen casing is another wisdom of meat packaging, which is made by collagen fibers from hide skin, presenting a rapid growth in casing market. To strengthen mechanical strength and barrier behaviors of collagen-based packaging materials, different physical, chemical, and biological cross-linking methods are springing up exuberantly, as well as a variety of reinforcement approaches including nanotechnology. In addition, the rapid development of biomimetic technology also provides a good research idea and means for the promotion of collagen's assembly and relevant mechanical properties. This review can offer some reference on fundamental theory and practical application of collagenous materials in meat products.

Design and fabrication of electrospunMorinda citrifolia-based nanofibrous scaffold as skin wound dressing material:in vitroandin silicoanalysis

Wound healing is an urgent problem that impacts quality of life, and the need for biomaterials suitable for the treatment of skin wound healing disease is increasing annually. Innovative biomaterials and treatments for skin abrasions are being relentlessly researched and established in order to improve treatment efficacy. Here, we describe a novel electrospun polymeric nanofibrous scaffold enriched with pharmaceutical bioactive materials extracted fromMorinda citrifolia(MC), which demonstrated efficient skin wound healing therapy due to its excellent human skin keratinocyte proliferation and adhesion inin vitroanalysis. Surface morphological analysis was used to reveal the nano-architectural structure of the electrospun scaffolds. The fabricated nanofibers displayed good antibacterial efficacy by creating an inhibitory zone for the pathogenic microbes studied. MC supported active healing due to the presence of pharmaceuticals associated with wound healing, as revealed by the results of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the prediction of activity spectra for substances (PASS) analysis. Since MC is a multi-potential therapeutic herbal plant, it was found that the linoleic acid, olelic acid, and diethyl phthalate present in the extract supported the wound healing proteins glycogen-synthase-kinase-3-β-protein and Protein Data Bank-1Q5K with binding energies of -4.6, -5.2, and -5.9 kcal mol^-1, as established by the results ofin silicoanalysis. Thus, by being hydrophilic in nature, targeting wound proteins, increasing the proliferation and adhesion of keratinocytes and combating pathogens, the nanofibrous scaffolds endowed with MC extract proved to be an effective therapeutic material for skin wound dressing applications.

Novel Biomedical Applications of Crosslinked Collagen

Collagen is one of the most useful biopolymers because of its low immunogenicity and biocompatibility. The biomedical potential of natural collagen is limited by its poor mechanical strength, thermal stability, and enzyme resistance, but exogenous chemical, physical, or biological crosslinks have been used to modify the molecular structure of collagen to minimize degradation and enhance mechanical stability. Although crosslinked collagen-based materials have been widely used in biomedicine, there is no standard crosslinking protocol that can achieve a perfect balance between stability and functional remodeling of collagen. Understanding the role of crosslinking agents in the modification of collagen performance and their potential biomedical applications are crucial for developing novel collagen-based biopolymers for therapeutic gain.
