Effects of Inhibition Conditions on Anammox process

Iron particle-integrated anammox granules in baffled reactor: Enhanced settling property and nitrogen removal performance

This study evaluates iron particle-integrated anammox granules (IP-IAGs) to enhance wastewater treatment efficiency. The IP-IAGs resulted in notable improvements in settleability and nitrogen removal. The settling velocity of IP-IAGs increased by 17.91 % to 2.92 ± 0.20 cm/s, and the total nitrogen removal efficiency in batch mode improved by 6.82 %. These changes indicate enhanced biological activity for effective treatment. In continuous operation, the IP-IAGs reactor showed no accumulation of nitrite until 40 d, reaching a peak nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of 1.54 kg-N/m3·d and a nitrogen removal efficiency of 82.61 %. Furthermore, a partial nitritation-anammox reactor that treated anaerobic digestion effluent achieved a NRR of 1.41 ± 0.09 kg-N/m3·d, proving the applicability of IP-IAGs in real wastewater conditions. These results underscore the potential of IP-IAGs to enhance the efficiency and stability of anammox-based processes, marking a significant advancement in environmental engineering for wastewater treatment.

Co-Treatment of Landfill Leachate and Liquid Fractions of Anaerobic Digestate in an Industrial-Scale Membrane Bioreactor System

The management of the liquid fraction of digestate produced from the anaerobic digestion of biodegradable municipal solid waste is a difficult affair, as its land application is limited due to high ammonium concentrations and the municipal waste that water treatment plants struggle to treat due to high pollutant loads. The amount of leachate and the pollutant load in the leachate produced by landfills usually decreases with the time, which increases the capacity of landfill leachate treatment plants (LLTPs) to treat additional wastewater. In order to solve the above two challenges, the co-treatment of landfill leachate and the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate in an industrial-scale LLTP was investigated along with the long-term impacts of the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate on biocoenosis and its impact on LLTP operational expenses. The co-treatment of landfill leachate and liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate was compared to conventional leachate treatment in an industrial-scale LLTP, which included the use of two parallel lanes (Lane-1 and Lane-2). The average nitrogen removal efficiencies in Lane-1 (co-treatment) were 93.4%, 95%, and 92%, respectively, for C/N ratios of 8.7, 8.9, and 9.4. The average nitrogen removal efficiency in Lane-2 (conventional landfill leachate treatment), meanwhile, was 88%, with a C/N ratio of 6.5. The LLTP’s average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were 63.5%, 81%, and 78% during phases one, two, and three, respectively. As the volume ratios of the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate increased, selective oxygen uptake rate experiments demonstrated the dominance of heterotrophic bacteria over ammonium and nitrite-oxidising organisms. The inclusion of the liquid fraction of anaerobic digestate during co-treatment did not cause a significant increase in operational resources, i.e., oxygen, the external carbon source, activated carbon, and energy.

Effects of sludge thermal hydrolysis pretreatment on anaerobic digestion and downstream processes: mechanism, challenges and solutions

Thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP), as a step prior to sludge anaerobic digestion (AD), is widely applied due to its effectiveness in enhancing organic solids hydrolysis and subsequent biogas productivity. However, THP also induces a series of problems including formation of refractory compounds in THP cylinder, high residual ammonia and organic in the AD centrate, inhibition on downstream nitrogen removal process and reduction in UV-disinfection effectiveness during post-treatment. More attention should be paid on how to mitigate these negative effects. Despite intensive studies were carried out to reduce refractory compounds formation and enhance biological performance, there is limited effort to discuss the solutions to tackle the THP associated problems in a holistic manner. This paper summarizes the solutions developed to date and analyzes their technology readiness to assess application potential in full-scale settings. The content highlights the limitations of THP and proposes potential solutions to address the technological challenges.

High nitrogen removal performance of anaerobically treated fish processing wastewater by one-stage partial nitritation and anammox process with hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based syntrophic granules and granule structure

The one-stage partial nitritation and anammox process with the hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based syntrophic granules was studied for the ammonium nitrogen removal from the effluents of a self-agitated anaerobic baffled reactor treating the fish processing wastewater. When the ammonium in the influent was 1140 mg N·L^-1, a high nitrogen removal rate and nitrogen removal efficiency of 1.51 ± 0.10 kg N·m^-3·d^-1 and 88.2% were obtained, respectively. Anammox bacteria of Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis and ammonium oxidizing bacteria of Nitrosomonas were the two most predominant bacteria, while nitrite oxidizing bacteria activity was low and could be neglected during the treatment. The inorganic element properties of the sludge were analyzed by several methods to confirm the existence of HAP granules. Optical microscopic observation and scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed the structure of the granular sludge.This study supports the feasibility and potential of this process for high-efficiency nitrogen removal from fish processing wastewater.

Organic carbon bioavailability: Is it a good driver to choose the best biological nitrogen removal process?

Organic carbon can affect the biological nitrogen removal process since the Anammox, heterotrophic and denitrifying bacteria have different affinities and feedback in relation to carbon/nitrogen ratio. Therefore, we reviewed the wastewater carbon concentration, its biodegradability and bioavailability to choose the appropriate nitrogen removal process between conventional (nitrification-denitrification) and Anammox-based process (i.e. integrated with the partial nitritation, nitritation, simultaneous partial nitrification and denitrification or partial-denitrification). This review will cover: (i) strategies to choose the best nitrogen removal route according to the wastewater characteristics in relation to the organic matter bioavailability and biodegradability; (ii) strategies to efficiently remove nitrogen and the remaining carbon from effluent in anammox-based process and its operating cost; (iii) an economic analysis to determine the operational costs of two-units Anammox-based process when compared with the commonly applied one-unit Anammox system (partial-nitritation-Anammox). On this review, a list of alternatives are summarized and explained for different nitrogen and biodegradable organic carbon concentrations, which are the main factors to determine the best treatment process, based on operational and economic terms. In summary, it depends on the wastewater carbon biodegradability, which implies in the wastewater treatment cost. Thus, to apply the conventional nitrification/denitrification process a COD_b/N ratio higher than 3.5 is required to achieve full nitrogen removal efficiency. For an economic point of view, according to the analysis the minimum COD_b/gN for successful nitrogen removal by nitrification/denitrification is 5.8 g. If ratios lower than 3.5 are applied, for successfully higher nitrogen removal rates and the economic feasibility of the treatment, Anammox-based routes can be applied to the wastewater treatment plant.

Anammox-based processes: How far have we come and what work remains? A review by bibliometric analysis

Nitrogen contamination remains a severe environmental problem and a major threat to sustainable development worldwide. A systematic analysis of the literature indicates that the partial nitritation-anammox (PN/AMX) process is still actively studied as a viable option for energy-efficient and feasible technology for the sustainable treatment of N- rich wastewaters, since its initial discovery in 1990. Notably, the mainstream PN/AMX process application remains the most challenging bottleneck in AMX technology and fascinates the world's attention in AMX studies. This paper discusses the recent trends and developments of PN/AMX research and analyzes the results of recent years of research on the PN/AMX from lab-to full-scale applications. The findings would deeply improve our understanding of the major challenges under mainstream conditions and next-stage research on the PN/AMX process. A great deal of efforts has been made in the process engineering, PN/AMX bacteria populations, predictive modeling, and the full-scale implementations during the past 22 years. A series of new and excellent experimental findings at lab, pilot and full-scale levels including good nitrogen removal performance even under low temperature (15-10 °C) around the world were achieved. To date, pilot- and full-scale PN/AMX have been successfully used to treat different types of industrial sewage, including black wastewater, sludge digester liquids, landfill leachate, monosodium glutamate wastewater, etc. Supplementing the qualitative analysis, this review also provides a quantitative bibliometrics study and evaluates global perspectives on PN/AMX research published during the past 22 years. Finally, general trends in the development of PN/AMX research are summarized with the aim of conveying potential future trajectories. The current review offers a valuable orientation and global overview for scientists, engineers, readers and decision makers presently focusing on PN/AMX processes.

The short- and long-term inhibitory effects of Fe (II) on anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) process

The application of the anammox process has great potential in treating nitrogen-rich wastewater. The presence of Fe (II) is expected to affect the growth and activity of anammox bacteria. Short-term (acute) and long-term effects (chronic) of Fe (II) on anammox activity were investigated. In the short-term study, results demonstrated that the optimum concentration of Fe (II) that could be added to anammox is 0.08 mM, at which specific anammox activity (SAA) improved by 60% compared to the control assay, 0.00 mM. The inhibition concentration, IC₅₀, of Fe (II) was found to be 0.192 mM. Kinetics of anammox specific growth rate were estimated based on results of the batch test and evaluated with Han-Levenspiel's substrate inhibition kinetics model. The optimum concentration and IC₅₀ of Fe (II) predicted by the Han-Levenspiel model was similar to the batch test, with values of 0.07 mM and 0.20 mM, respectively. The long-term effect of Fe (II) on the performance of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was evaluated. Results showed that an appropriate Fe (II) addition enhanced anammox activity, achieving 85% NH₄ ⁺-N and 96% NO₂ ^--N removal efficiency when 0.08 mM of Fe (II) was added. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was adopted to detect and identify the anammox bacteria.

Effects of Salts on the Activity and Growth of "Candidatus Scalindua sp.", a Marine Anammox Bacterium

Four salts, SEALIFE (a synthetic sea salt), NaCl, Na2SO4, and NaCl+KCl, were applied to monitor the effects of salinity on "Candidatus Scalindua sp.", a marine anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacterium. The highest ammonium consumption of 10 μmol mg protein-1 d-1 was observed at 88 mmol L-1 of Na in the presence of NaCl. The highest inorganic carbon uptake of 0.6 μmol mg protein-1 d-1 was observed at 117 mmol L-1 of Na and at 16 mmol L-1 of K in the presence of NaCl+KCl. Thus, Na and K are both important for maintaining a high growth rate of "Candidatus Scalindua sp."
