Self-assisted optothermal trapping of gold nanorods under two-photon excitation

Programmable Crowding and Tunable Phases in a Binary Mixture of Colloidal Particles under Light-Driven Thermal Convection

We employ photothermally driven self-assembly of colloidal particles to design microscopic structures with programmable size and tunable order. The experimental system is based on a binary mixture of "plasmonic heater" gold nanoparticles and "assembly building block" microparticles. Photothermal heating of the gold nanoparticles under visible light causes a natural convection flow that efficiently assembles the microscale building block particles (diameter 1-10 μm) into a monolayer. We identify the onset of active Brownian motion of colloidal particles under this convective flow by varying the conditions of light intensity, gold nanoparticle concentration, and sample height. We realize a crowded assembly of microparticles around the center of illumination and show that the size of the particle crowd can be programmed using patterned light illumination. In a binary mixture of gold nanoparticles and polystyrene microparticles, we demonstrate the formation of rapid and large-scale crystalline monolayers, covering an area of 0.88 mm2 within 10 min. We find that the structural order of the assembly can be tuned by varying the surface charge of the nanoparticles and the size of the microparticles, giving rise to the formation of different phases-colloidal crystals, crowds, and gels. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we explain how the phases emerge from the interplay between hydrodynamic and electrostatic interactions, as well as the assembly kinetics. Our study demonstrates the promise of self-assembly with programmable shapes and structural order under nonequilibrium conditions using an accessible setup comprising only binary mixtures and LED light.

Manipulating nanoparticles based on a laser photothermal trap

A method of efficient directional optical manipulation of nanoparticles based on a laser photothermal trap is proposed, and the influence mechanism of external conditions on the photothermal trap is clarified. Through optical manipulation experiments and finite-element simulations, it is determined that the main cause of gold nanoparticle directional motion depends on the drag force. The laser power, boundary temperature, and thermal conductivity of the substrate at the bottom of the solution and liquid level essentially affect the intensity of the laser photothermal trap in the solution and then affect the directional movement and deposition speed of gold particles. The result shows the origin of the laser photothermal trap and the three-dimensional spatial velocity distribution of gold particles. It also clarifies the height boundary of photothermal effect onset, which clarifies the boundary between light force and photothermal effect. In addition, nanoplastics are manipulated successfully based on this theoretical study. In this study, the movement law of gold nanoparticles based on the photothermal effect is deeply analyzed through experiments and simulations, which is of significance to the theoretical study of the optical manipulation of nanoparticles using the photothermal effect.

Heat-Mediated Optical Manipulation

Progress in optical manipulation has stimulated remarkable advances in a wide range of fields, including materials science, robotics, medical engineering, and nanotechnology. This Review focuses on an emerging class of optical manipulation techniques, termed heat-mediated optical manipulation. In comparison to conventional optical tweezers that rely on a tightly focused laser beam to trap objects, heat-mediated optical manipulation techniques exploit tailorable optothermo-matter interactions and rich mass transport dynamics to enable versatile control of matter of various compositions, shapes, and sizes. In addition to conventional tweezing, more distinct manipulation modes, including optothermal pulling, nudging, rotating, swimming, oscillating, and walking, have been demonstrated to enhance the functionalities using simple and low-power optics. We start with an introduction to basic physics involved in heat-mediated optical manipulation, highlighting major working mechanisms underpinning a variety of manipulation techniques. Next, we categorize the heat-mediated optical manipulation techniques based on different working mechanisms and discuss working modes, capabilities, and applications for each technique. We conclude this Review with our outlook on current challenges and future opportunities in this rapidly evolving field of heat-mediated optical manipulation.

Gold Nanorods: The Most Versatile Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Gold nanorods (NRs), pseudo-one-dimensional rod-shaped nanoparticles (NPs), have become one of the burgeoning materials in the recent years due to their anisotropic shape and adjustable plasmonic properties. With the continuous improvement in synthetic methods, a variety of materials have been attached around Au NRs to achieve unexpected or improved plasmonic properties and explore state-of-the-art technologies. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the latest progress on Au NRs, the most versatile anisotropic plasmonic NPs. We present a representative overview of the advances in the synthetic strategies and outline an extensive catalogue of Au-NR-based heterostructures with tailored architectures and special functionalities. The bottom-up assembly of Au NRs into preprogrammed metastructures is then discussed, as well as the design principles. We also provide a systematic elucidation of the different plasmonic properties associated with the Au-NR-based structures, followed by a discussion of the promising applications of Au NRs in various fields. We finally discuss the future research directions and challenges of Au NRs.

Opto-thermophoretic trapping of micro and nanoparticles with a 2 µm Tm-doped fiber laser

We propose a method for opto-thermophoretic trapping with a 2 µm Tm-doped fiber laser. The infrared continuous-wave laser beam is directly and strongly absorbed by water solution, and some local temperature gradient is generated around a focus. The particles are migrated along the temperature gradient, and form a hexagonal close-packed structure at a bottom-glass solution interface. On the other hand, the particles are not trapped in heavy water which does not absorb 2 µm light. The fact indicates that the local temperature elevation is the origin of this phenomenon. We have investigated the dependence of the phenomenon on the material, particle size, and laser power. To the best of our knowledge, 2 µm is the longest wavelength used for the opto-thermophoretic trapping.
