Biofield Frequency Bands—Definitions and Group Differences

Background

In the biofield literature, it is suggested that electromagnetic energy is part of the biofield. However, little is known about the exact definition of potential electromagnetic biofield frequency bands (FBs).

Primary Study Objective: The current study sought to identify biofield FBs and test potential group differences.

Methods/Design: High-frequency (i.e. >200 Hertz) voltage was measured at body parts along the spine and the brain.

Setting

Measurements were conducted in an electrically shielded laboratory.

Participants

Twenty experienced biofield practitioners (BPs, sample 1) and twenty-four students (STs, sample 2) participated in the study.

Interventions

The BPs performed a wide set of biofield exercises, while the STs participated in an assessment centre (with exercises such as role play). A total of N = 342 exercises were performed.

Primary Outcome Measures: Based on surface electromyography, high-frequency (i.e., >200 Hertz) voltage was utilized as outcome measure.

Results

10 FBs were identified across all the data sets. The BPs had higher spectral power across these bands compared to the STs.

Conclusion

The present paper presents a replicable method for the assessment of electromagnetic FBs which are potentially useful for future biofield research.

External qigong therapy for women with breast cancer prior to surgery

The majority of patients with cancer use some form of complementary or alternative medicine. External qigong treatment (EQT), classified as a bioenergy therapy, is one such approach that patients combine with conventional medicine or, in some cases, use in place of conventional medicine. This study aimed to determine whether EQT could shrink breast cancer tumors and improve quality of life (QOL) in women with pathologically confirmed breast cancer awaiting surgery. A total of 9 women with pathologically confirmed breast cancer were recruited from large cancer centers in the United States (n = 5) and China (n = 4). A single-arm pre/post design was used. Each patient underwent 5 consecutive days of EQT, with each treatment lasting from 2 to 5 minutes. All treatments were performed by the same qigong master. Tumor measurements were made before and after the EQT sessions. Tumor assessments were conducted prior to study initiation and following the last EQT. Patients underwent both an ultrasound and mammogram (United States) or an ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (China). All patients also underwent physical breast examinations (PBEs) and completed QOL questionnaires before and after the last EQT. No clinical changes in tumor measurements from pre- to post-EQT were noted. There was also no suggestion of change in tumor size by PBE or change in QOL. Using the current

STUDY DESIGN

EQT also does not appear to have any effect on patient QOL. Because of the small sample size and working with only one qigong practitioner, to definitively determine the efficacy or lack of efficacy of EQT, a larger study with multiple qigong practitioners would need to be conducted.

The Influence of 10min of the Johrei healing method on laboratory stress

OBJECTIVE

Johrei has been shown to decrease exam stress responses but its immediate effects have not been assessed.

DESIGN

In a randomised, blinded, counter-balanced design, 33 medical students were asked to calculate mental arithmetic in the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task (PASAT), which served as an acute stressor prior to two conditions, 10 min of Johrei or a control resting condition involving 10 min without Johrei in a cross-over trial; after each, saliva was collected and mood tested.

SETTING

University EEG laboratory.

INTERVENTION

Johrei, a non-touch healing method.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Profile of mood states (POMS-Bi); state anxiety (STAI); salivary variables: cortisol, DHEA, IgA.

RESULTS

Mood scores on 5/6 of the POMS-Bi subscales were slightly but significantly more positive in the Johrei condition. State anxiety was similarly decreased. IgA levels were unchanged but cortisol levels were found to be slightly but non-significantly lower after Johrei than after the control condition and DHEA levels slightly but non-significantly raised, with a negative correlation between cortisol and DHEA levels.

CONCLUSIONS

This study gives some indication that Johrei can reduce negative mood and increase positive mood states after the acute effects of a laboratory stressor in comparison to a resting control condition.

Benefits of External Qigong Therapy on Morphine-Abstinent Mice and Rats

OBJECTIVE

To exclude possible psychological effects of qigong therapy in the treatment of addiction effectively, morphine-dependence models need to be established in mice and rats.

METHOD

The effects of external qi on withdrawal syndrome were examined in naloxone-precipitated mice and rats in three randomized control experiments: naloxone-precipitated test in morphine-dependent mice (n = 100 in 5 groups, 20 mice each group); conditioned position preference test in morphine-abstinent mice (n = 30 for 3 groups, 10 each); and naloxone-precipitated test with paired box in morphine-dependent rats (n = 40 for 4 groups, 10 each).

RESULTS

These experiments showed that morphine-dependent mice, after external qigong (EQ) therapy, had decreased incidence of jumping and lower jumping frequencies, and attenuated loss of body weight. After EQ therapy, morphine-dependent rats had reduced withdrawal scores and body weight loss was inhibited. In the conditioned place preference test, the time spent in the drug-paired box was significantly shorter for the qigong group than for the morphine group.

CONCLUSION

These results suggest that qigong might have an inhibitory effect on withdrawal syndrome, and reduce the dependence potential in mice. Three different designs confirm that the impact of qigong therapy on morphine-abstinent mice and rats is reliable and substantial. Further research on the effectiveness and the mechanism of qigong therapy on addiction is warranted.

A preliminary study of the effect of external qigong on lymphoma growth in mice

OBJECTIVE

To examine the effectiveness of external qigong on the in vivo growth of transplantable murine lymphoma cells in mice.

BACKGROUND

Qigong is a traditional Chinese health practice that is believed by many to have special preventive and healing power. Underlying the system is the belief in the existence of a subtle energy (qi), which circulates throughout the body, and when strengthened or balanced, can improve health and ward off or slow the progress of disease. To date, much of the literature showing the effects of qi are presented in the non-Western literature, and as such are viewed with considerable skepticism. In an attempt to demonstrate qi in a controlled setting, the effect of external qigong emission from a qigong healer on the in vivo growth of transplantable murine lymphoma cells in mice was explored in two pilot studies.

METHODS

In study 1, 30 SJL/J mice were injected intravenously with lymphoma cells that localize and exhibit aggressive growth in the lymphoid tissues of untreated syngeneic recipients. These tumor-injected mice were divided into 3 groups: (1). qigong treatment (administered by a qigong healer); (2). sham treatment; and (3). no-treatment control. The sham group received the same number of treatments from a person without training in qigong, who imitated the motions of the qigong healer. The control group received no treatment at all. In study 1, the mice were sacrificed on the 9th or 11th days after tumor-cell injection, and in study 2, the mice were sacrificed on the 10th and 13th days. Tumor growth in lymph nodes (LN) was estimated by LN weight expressed as a percentage of total body weight.

RESULTS

In study 1, LNs from mice in the qigong-treated group were significantly smaller than LN from mice in either the control group or in the sham treatment group (p < 0.05), suggesting that there was less tumor growth in the qigong-treated mice. In study 2, using the same design as study 1, the same pattern of difference found in study 1 emerged: LN ratio from mice in the qigong-treated group was smaller than that in either the control group or in the sham group. However, these results did not reach statistical significance, partially as a result of larger variances in all groups in this study.

CONCLUSIONS

These preliminary results, while still inconclusive, suggest that qigong treatment from one particular qigong practitioner might influence the growth of lymphoma cells negatively. Further studies with different practitioners, more repeated trials, and/or different tumor models are needed to further investigate the effects of external qigong on tumor growth in mice.

Healing as a therapy for human disease: a systematic review

OBJECTIVE

To assess, from published clinical trials, the evidence for the use of healing as a complementary medical intervention in human disease.

DESIGN

Limited to studies involving random assignment to a treatment group consisting of "healing," broadly defined, or to a concurrent control group. All randomized trials published up to the year 2000, were identified from MEDLINE, CINAHL, BIDS-EMBASE, the CISCOM complementary medicine databases and from bibliographic references of published articles. Copies of all published studies were obtained, data were extracted, and methodological quality (Jadad) scores were derived where possible.

RESULTS

Fifty-nine randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were found comparing healing with a control intervention on human participants. In 37 of these, healing was used for existing diseases or symptoms (22 existed as fully accessible published reports, 10 as dissertation abstracts only, and 5 as "preliminary" investigations with limited evidential value). The 22 full trials (10 reporting a "significant" effect of healing compared with control) constitute an extremely heterogeneous group, varying greatly in the method and duration of healing; the medical condition treated; the outcome measure employed; and the control intervention used. Many trials had a number of methodological shortcomings, including small sample sizes, and were inadequately reported. Only 8 studies (5 with a significant outcome for healing) had a maximum methodological quality score of 5, and in 10 studies this score was 3 or less. Two trials-both large scale and methodologically sound-were replicates, and each found a significant beneficial effect of intercessory prayer on the clinical progress of cardiac patients. Eleven of the 15 dissertation abstracts and pilot studies reported nonsignificant results for healing compared with control, a finding that probably reflects the relatively small sample sizes and the likelihood of type II errors. The significant heterogeneity found in this group of trials makes categorization problematic and inhibits the pooling of results by meta-analysis or similar techniques to obtain a global estimate of the "treatment effect" of healing.

CONCLUSIONS

No firm conclusions about the efficacy or inefficacy of healing can be drawn from this diverse group of RCTs. Given the current emphasis on evidence-based medicine, future investigations should be adequately powered, appropriately controlled, and properly described. These future investigations would most usefully consist of: (1) pragmatic trials of healing for undifferentiated conditions on patients based in general practice and (2) larger RCTs of distant healing on large numbers of patients with well-defined measurable illness.

Multisite surface electromyography and complementary healing intervention: a comparative analysis

A comparative analysis was conducted on a series of three experimental studies that examined the effect of various local and nonlocal (distant) complementary healing methods on multisite surface electromyographic (sEMG) and autonomic measures. The series concentrated sEMG electrode placement on specific neuromuscular paraspinal centers (cervical [C4], thoracic [T6], and lumbar [L3]), along with the frontalis region, due to the fact that these sites corresponded to the location of individual chakra centers as delineated in ancient Eastern medical and philosophical texts. It was hypothesized that the sEMG assessment procedure had the potential to provide objective, quantifiable correlates for complementary healing treatment effects, as well as assess the energy flow through the chakras during a healing treatment. The studies were the first of their kind to incorporate randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled protocols in order to evaluate correlative neuromuscular multisite sEMG paraspinal measures with different complementary healing treatment interventions. Although the measurement protocols were similar between experiments, the results, demonstrated by the individual studies, varied. Whereas the overall findings of the series are encouraging because they indicate a potential objective scientific correlate to complementary healing treatment intervention, the results are considered preliminary in nature and appear to be linked to either the meditational experience of the subjects or dependent on the particular healer(s) used. Additional research is needed in order to establish the multisite sEMG assessment procedure as a reliable correlative measure for complementary healing treatment effects and to determine whether a consistent replicative treatment effect can be demonstrated independent of the specific subject population or practitioner(s) used.
