Abstract
Musculoskeletal disorders encompass a wide range of conditions that impact the bones, joints, muscles, and connective tissues within the body. Despite the ongoing debate on toxicity and administration, ozone demonstrated promise in managing several musculoskeletal disorders, modulating pain and inflammation. A literature search was conducted. The research design, methods, findings, and conclusions of the studies were then examined to evaluate the physiological effects, clinical application, controversies, and safety of the application of ozone in musculoskeletal medicine. Ozone application demonstrates considerable therapeutic applications in the management of musculoskeletal disorders, including fractures, osteoarthritis, and chronic pain syndromes. Despite these advantages, studies have raised concerns regarding its potential toxicity and emphasized the importance of adhering to stringent administration protocols to ensure safety. Additionally, heterogeneities in patient reactions and hazards from oxidizing agents were observed. Given its anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities, ozone therapy holds potential in the management of several musculoskeletal disorders. Additional high-quality research with long follow-up is required to refine indications, efficacy and safety profile. Finally, for wider clinical acceptability and utilization, the development of international recommendations is essential.

Abstract
Ozone has been successfully used in medicine for over 100 years due to its microbiological qualities. Its powerful oxidation impact, which results in the production of free radicals, and its ability to cause the direct death of nearly all microorganisms is the basis for its bactericide, virucide, and fungicide properties. Ozone also has a medicinal impact that speeds up blood flow and aids wound healing. Ozone may be applied as a gas or dissolved in water for medical purposes. Despite the benefits of using ozone therapeutically, concerns about its use in dentistry still exist. We aimed to provide a summary of the current uses of ozone in medicine and dentistry. An electronic search was performed for all English scientific papers published between 2012 and 2023 using PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar search engines. Ozone, clinical applications, medicine, and dentistry were the search terms used. Seventy full-text articles describing the use of ozone therapy in medicine and dentistry were included in the present review. Ozone has shown several beneficial effects in the medical field. However, despite the encouraging in vitro evidence, the clinical use of ozone in dentistry has not yet been demonstrated as highly effective.

Abstract
Background Patients with refractory symptoms of severe diseases frequently experience anxiety, depression, and an altered health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Some publications have described the beneficial effect of ozone therapy on several symptoms of this kind of patient. The aim of this study was to preliminarily evaluate, in patients treated because of refractory symptoms of cancer treatment and advanced nononcologic diseases, if ozone therapy has an additional impact on self-reported anxiety and depression. Methods Before and after ozone treatment, we assessed (i) anxiety and depression according to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); (ii) the HRQOL (according to the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire), which includes a dimension on anxiety and depression and a visual analog scale (VAS) measuring self-perceived general health. Results Before ozone therapy, 56% of patients were on anxiolytic and/or antidepressant treatment. Before and after ozone therapy, the anxiety and depression HADS subscales (i) significantly correlated with the anxiety/depression dimension of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire and (ii) inversely correlated with the health status as measured by the VAS. After ozone therapy, we found a significant improvement in anxiety and depression measured by both the (i) HADS subscales and (ii) EQ-5D-5L questionnaire. Conclusion The addition of ozone therapy for patients with refractory symptoms of cancer treatment and advanced chronic nononcologic diseases can decrease anxiety and depression severity levels. Additional, more focused studies are ongoing to provide the needed explanatory information for this finding.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS A prospective clinical, preliminary study was performed in patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) who were nonresponders to conventional treatment and received intravesical ozone as a therapeutic alternative. METHODS Sixteen patients received six applications of intravesical ozone at a concentration of 41 μg/mL. We evaluated therapeutic efficacy by the percentage reduction of Interstitial Cystitis Symptom and Problem Index scores (ICSI/ICPI-the O'Leary-Sant symptom index), recurrence rate, nonresponse, and side effects in scores collected on admission (pre-treatment), at the end of the therapeutic protocol (post-treatment), and 180 days (follow-up) after the last ozone application. RESULTS The mean age of women was 52.9 years (SD: 15.5), and the duration of symptoms was 5.7 years (SD: 7.1). The median ICSI on admission was 17 (IQR: 14.25-19.5) and at follow-up was 0.5 (IQR: 0-2), with a reduction of 97.5% (CI: 85.7-100). The median ICSI/ICPI on admission was 31.5 (IQR: 29-35.2) and at follow-up was 2.0 (IQR: 0-3.75), with a reduction of 92.3% (CI: 88.8-100). The recurrence rate was only 6.25%, and no patients were nonresponders to the treatment. CONCLUSIONS The application of intravesical ozone was effective in the treatment of patients with IC/BPS who were nonresponders to conventional therapy, showing a progressive and safe effect, at least in the short term.

Abstract
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of the most detrimental toxicity to a patient’s quality of life. Pathophysiological mechanisms involved in CIPN pathogenesis are complex, multifactorial, and only partially examined. They are suspected to be associated with oxidative stress (OS), mitochondrial dysfunction, ROS-induced apoptosis, myelin sheath and DNA damage, and immunological and inflammatory processes. Unfortunately, medications commonly used for the management of other neuropathic pain syndromes, including gabapentinoids, opioids, and tricyclic antidepressants (such as desipramine and nortriptyline), do not bring satisfactory results in CIPN. The aim of this review is to evaluate the existing literature on the potential use of medical ozone as a treatment for CIPN. This paper would explore the potential therapeutic benefits of medical ozone. The review would evaluate the existing literature on the use of medical ozone in other contexts, as well as its potential application in treating CIPN. The review would also suggest possible research methods, such as randomized controlled trials, to evaluate the efficacy of medical ozone as a treatment for CIPN. Medical ozone has been used to disinfect and treat diseases for over 150 years. The effectiveness of ozone in treating infections, wounds, and a variety of diseases has been well documented. Ozone therapy is also documented to inhibit the growth of human cancer cells and has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Due to its ability to modulate oxidative stress, inflammation, and ischemia/hypoxia, ozone may have a potentially valuable effect on CIPN.

Abstract
(1) Background: The continuous improvement in cancer treatment has led to improvement in patients’ survival and a subsequent increase in the number of cancer survivors living with adverse side effects of cancer treatments, sometimes with a high and adverse impact on their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Side effects of cancer treatments are frequently associated with chronic status of oxidative stress, inflammation, and/or ischemia. The potential for ozone treatment to modulate those processes and improve some of those adverse effects has previously been described. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ozone treatment on the HRQOL and grade of toxicity in symptomatic cancer survivors. (2) Methods: Before and after ozone treatment, we assessed (i) the HRQOL (according to the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire) and (ii) the grade of toxicity (according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events of the National Cancer Institute of EEUU (CTCAE v.5.0)) in 26 cancer survivors with chronic side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. (3) Results: There was a significant (p < 0.001) improvement in the EQ-5D-5L index as per the self-reported outcome evaluation of patients’ health status. All the dimensions of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire (mobility, self-care, activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression) and the self-evaluation of the health status using the visual analog scale were significantly improved (p < 0.05). The grade of toxicity was also significantly decreased (p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: In cancer survivors with chronic side effects of cancer treatment, ozone treatment can improve the grade of toxicity and the HRQOL. These results merit additional research. Further studies are ongoing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic disease that causes widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbance. There is still no effective definitive treatment method; therefore, the search for treatment continues. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of ozone therapy (OT), which has been used in FM treatment in recent years, as an additional treatment. METHODS The patients were divided into OT (n= 26) and placebo control (PC) (n= 28) groups. Both groups received OT in the form of major autohemotherapy (MaAHT) and minor autohemotherapy (MiAHT) for two sessions per week for a total of 10 sessions. The fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and 12-item short-form health survey (SF-12) were used for evaluation pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS In the between-group comparison, the OT group showed significant post-treatment improvements in FIQ subscales (feel good, fatigue) and PSQI total score and subscales (subjective sleep quality, sleep latency and sleep disturbances) compared to the PC group (p< 0.05). Although there were improvements in the FIQ total score post-treatment in both groups, there was no significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION OT, which is applied as an additional treatment with the autohemotherapy method, simultaneously improves the subscale scores (feel good and fatigue) of FM and sleep quality in the treatment period. However, changes in the post-treatment FIQ total score were not different in the ozone therapy group from the placebo control group.

Abstract
The use of medical ozone in the treatment of chronic pain is progressively expanding in Spain and today it is used both in public and private medical centers. However, there is a great lack of knowledge about this technology not only in primary care but also in medical specialties. Although its biochemical bases are well determined and there are various systematic reviews and meta-analyses in the literature that justify its use in pain medicine, some professionals still are prejudiced against it. The evidence level of using medical ozone according SIGN (Scotish Intercollegiate Guideline Network) criteria is similar or superior to most of the techniques used in a Pain Unit. In this paper, we have done a review on ozone therapy in pain medicine, compiling the evidence published about it.

Abstract
In recent years, the interest in oxygen–ozone (O2O3) therapy application has considerably increased in the field of rehabilitation. Despite its widespread use in common clinical practice, the biochemical effects of O2O3 are still far from being understood, although its chemical properties seem to play a pivotal role in exerting its positive effects on different pathological conditions. Indeed, the effectiveness of O2O3 therapy might be partly due to the moderate oxidative stress produced by O3 interactions with biological components. O2O3 therapy is widely used as an adjuvant therapeutic option in several pathological conditions characterized by chronic inflammatory processes and immune over-activation, and most musculoskeletal disorders share these pathophysiological processes. The present comprehensive review depicts the state-of-the-art on the mechanisms of action, safety and effectiveness of O2O3 therapy in the complex scenario of the management of musculoskeletal disorders. Taken together, our findings suggest that O2O3 therapy seems to reduce pain and improve functioning in patients affected by low back pain and knee osteoarthritis, as reported by several studies in the literature. However, to date, further studies are warranted to clearly investigate the therapeutic effects of this promising therapy on other musculoskeletal disorders in the field of rehabilitation.

Abstract
Ozone is emerging as a new adjunct therapeutic agent for female infertility. We here present a review of the literature, to date, pertaining to the effect of ozone therapy on tubal, ovarian, endometrial, and vaginal factors that could potentially affect female fertility. It also presents data pertaining to the relationship of ozone therapy on pelvic adhesion formation. Most data were performed on animals and very few human studies existed in the literature. Results suggested that ozone therapy could have beneficial effect on tubal occlusion, could protect from endometritis and vaginitis, might protect ovaries from ischemia and oocyte loss and finally might lead to less formation of pelvic adhesions. There is a critical need for human studies pertaining to ozone therapy, especially using safe methods of administration, such as transdermally or intravaginally, on female fertility.

Abstract
General anesthesia and surgical stress cause an acute endocrine, metabolic, and immunologic inflammatory response in organisms and an increase in neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels. Ozone, other than inhalation administration, reduces the release of antioxidants and some proinflammatory cytokines and has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect. Our aim is to research how the NLR and IMA response is affected in rabbits undergoing surgical intervention with general anesthesia given prophylactic with ozone therapy. We divided 12 New Zealand rabbits into 2 groups: group O was given 70 μg/mL 10 mL ozone by the rectal route in 6 sessions on alternate days, and group C was given air by the rectal route. The rabbits underwent surgical intervention under general anesthesia. Blood samples were taken at basal, preoperation, 30 minutes postanesthesia, and 24 hours postoperation and were examined for hemogram and IMA. At 24 hours postoperation, an increase in NLR was observed in both groups, more clearly in group C (P < 0.05). In both groups, comparisons within the groups showed a significant increase in NLR only at 24 hours postoperation compared to other times (P < 0.05).When IMA values were compared, differences between the groups were observed between preoperative values and those at the 30 minutes postanesthesia and 24 hours postoperation (P < 0.05). When general anesthesia and surgical stress response were evaluated using inflammatory parameters of both NLR and IMA, there was significantly less of an increase in levels in rabbits given ozone compared to the control group.
