Immediate Effects of Acupuncture on Force and Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness

The effect of sham acupuncture can differ depending on the points needled in knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Objective

In sham acupuncture-controlled acupuncture clinical trials, although sham acupuncture techniques are different from those of verum acupuncture, the same acupuncture points are often used for verum and sham acupuncture, raising the question of whether sham acupuncture is an appropriate placebo. We aimed to examine the effects of sham and verum acupuncture according to the points needled (same or different between verum and sham acupuncture) in knee osteoarthritis.

Methods

Ten databases were searched to find randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) assessing the effects of verum acupuncture with sham acupuncture or waiting lists on knee osteoarthritis. Sham acupuncture was classified as using the same acupuncture points as those in verum acupuncture (SATV) or using sham points (SATS). A frequentist network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted, and the certainty of evidence was evaluated.

Results

A total of 10 RCTs involving 1628 participants were included. Verum acupuncture was significantly superior to SATS but not different from SATV in terms of pain reduction. Additionally, SATV was significantly superior to the waiting list. For physical function, no difference were found between verum acupuncture, SATV, and SATS. The certainty of evidence was low to moderate.

Conclusion

For knee osteoarthritis, the pain reduction effect of acupuncture may differ according to the needling points of sham acupuncture, and the control group should be established according to the specific aim of the study design and treatment mechanism.

Effects of auriculotherapy on muscle fatigue: A randomized crossover trial

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed investigate the effect of auriculotherapy on exercise-induced muscle fatigue, isometric torque production, and surface electromyographic activity (EMG).

METHODS

Design: Randomized Crossover Trial. The sample consisted of 18 males' volunteers who exercised at least twice a week.

THE SAMPLE WAS RANDOMLY ASSIGNED TO TWO GROUPS

Placebo Group (n = 9) and Treated Group (n = 9), and after seven days, the groups were crossed. The data analysis included 18 participants in each group.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE

The muscle fatigue index, force production rate, and EMG of the quadriceps were used for evaluation. The evaluation moments included baseline pre-fatigue, baseline post-fatigue, 48 h post-intervention pre-fatigue, and 48 h post-intervention post-fatigue. Mixed two-way test ANOVA was used to compare times and groups.

RESULTS

The fatigue index for peak torque and work showed no significant effect on time, groups, or interaction (p > 0.05). However, for isometric torque, force production rate, and EMG median frequency and average, the results indicate a positive change in values over time (p < 0.05) (with little practical relevance), with no differences observed between the groups or interaction (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, auriculotherapy had no effect on exercise-induced muscle fatigue, isometric torque production, and surface electromyographic activity.

Acupuncture and Dry Needling for Sports Performance and Recovery

ABSTRACT

Acupuncture and dry needling share many similarities in their proposed mechanisms of action and their sports medicine-related applications. Pain is the most common indication for these needling treatments, but there also are some limited studies on their use for ergogenic purposes. Needling can likely improve muscular strength and power, including increasing jump height, and it also can increase flexibility. In terms of sports recovery, acupuncture can not only be used for pain relief after injury, but also can help with routine recovery, such as in delayed onset muscle soreness. There are numerous case reports of acupuncture and dry needling being used to treat athletes for various diagnoses and conditions, however more high quality studies are needed in order to make more specific evidence-based recommendations. Given the high degree of safety and limited adverse events associated with needling treatments, it can likely be promoted in athletes.
