Abstract
Introduction The high level of emotional problems in youths placed in foster care contrasts with the limited use of evidence-based treatments. This study aims to better characterize the clinical features and therapeutic outcomes of foster care youths with mood disorders. Methods A secondary analysis of data collected in the context of a French-Canadian clinical research network on pediatric mood disorders in four sites was conducted to compare three groups of patients with depressive or bipolar disorder: those without exposure to child welfare intervention (WCWI, n = 181), those who received non-placement psychosocial intervention (NPI, n = 62), and those in placement interventions (PI, n = 41). Results We observed a very high rate of academic problems in patients in the groups NPI/PI compared to those in the WCWI group. Patients in the PI group had more disruptive behavioral disorders (OR = 6.87, 95% CI [3.25-14.52]), trauma-related disorders (OR = 3.78, 95% CI [1.6-8.94]), and any neurodevelopmental disorders (OR = 2.73, 95% CI [1.36-5.49]) compared to the other groups (NPI/WCWI). Among inpatients, the Clinical Global Impression-Improvement scale and the change in the Children Global Assessment Scale during the hospital stay did not differ across the three groups. We observed a higher prescription rate of antipsychotics in the PI group compared to the NPI/WCWI groups, but no significant difference for antidepressants and mood stabilizers. Discussion These findings support the view that, when provided with dedicated support, fostered inpatient youths can improve in a range comparable to other inpatients. Undetected neurodevelopmental disorders and academic problems are likely important contributors of the burden of mood disorders in these youths.

Abstract
Aim Appraise the clinical features and influencing factors of the hospitalization times and length of stay in bipolar disorder (BD) patients. Methods This is a multicenter, observational, cohort study of patients diagnosed of type I or type II bipolar disorder. Five hundred twenty outpatients in seven hospitals from six cities in China were recruited from February 2013 to June 2014 and followed up using a continuous sampling pattern. The research included a retrospective period of 12 months and the prospective period of 9 months. The demographic and clinical features of the patients were collected. The influencing factors that could affect the length of stay (number of days spent in the hospital in the prospective period) were analyzed by poisson's regression and the hospitalization times (times of hospitalization in the prospective and retrospective period) was analyzed by general linear model. The selected variables included gender, age, years of education, occupational status, residence status, family history of mental disease, comorbid substance abuse, comorbid anxiety disorder, times of suicide (total suicide times that occurred in the retrospective and prospective period), polarity of the first mood episode, and BD type(I/II). Results Poisson's regression analysis showed that suicide times [Incidence Rate Ratio (IRR) = 1.20, p < 0.001], use of antipsychotic (IRR = 0.62, p = 0.011), and use of antidepressant (IRR = 0.56, p < 0.001) were correlated to more hospitalization times. Linear regression analysis showed that BD type II (β = 0.28, p = 0.005) and unemployment (β = 0.16, p = 0.039) which might mean longer duration of depression and poor function were correlated to longer length of stay. However, patients who experienced more suicide times (β = -0.21, p = 0.007) tended to have a shorter length of stay. Conclusion Overall, better management of the depressive episode and functional rehabilitation may help to reduce the length of stay. BD patients with more hospitalization times were characterized by higher risk of suicide and complex polypharmacy. Patients at high risk of suicide tended to have inadequate therapy and poor compliance, which should be assessed and treated adequately during hospitalization. Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Little is known about adolescent inpatient units, key features which define them, and how these essential services operate and deliver care. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Adolescent inpatient unit studies are limited in their descriptions of settings in terms of how they operate and key features. The proposed preliminary checklist is a practical tool to assist clinicians, policy makers, and researchers when reporting to ensure comprehensive descriptions of adolescent inpatient settings. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: This could be used to inform service design processes for inpatient and other mental health service models which is of critical importance in the context of reforms and implementation of these in Australia currently. Greater attention to operational models, services, and philosophies of practice will improve reporting and allow for the advancement of knowledge, comparison of study results, and a clearer direction for mental health nursing clinicians and researchers. ABSTRACT: Introduction Adolescent inpatient units care for vulnerable population groups; however, little is known about how these essential services operate and deliver care. Aims To examine the descriptions of adolescent mental health inpatient units in Australian and international research publications and to identify key features which were used to define them. A secondary aim was to develop a checklist to improve consistency when reporting on the operations and services delivered within adolescent mental health inpatient units (both public and private). Methods Five electronic databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, ERIC, EMBASE, and PsycINFO) were systematically searched. We included studies that provided descriptions of operations and services within adolescent inpatient units where participants had a mean age between 12 and 25. Narrative synthesis was used to explore the similarities and differences between descriptions of settings. Results Twenty-eight studies were identified, which varied in their descriptions of adolescent inpatient units, providing inconsistent information to inform best practice. Discussion Studies lack consistency and comprehensive detail when describing the operational models within inpatient units, making interpretation challenging. Consequently, a preliminary checklist is proposed to improve reporting of adolescent inpatient units.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The present review aims to examine, summarize and update information on the sociodemographic and cultural determinants of mood disorders. RECENT FINDINGS Known sociodemographic and cultural determinants continue to be good predictors of the risk of developing a mood disorder over the lifetime. Polygenic risk scores do not appear to offer any advantages over these determinants at present. There is also new and emerging understanding of the role of lifestyle and environmental factors in mediating vulnerability to mood disorder. The influence of ethnicity and migration, on the other hand, is far more complex than initially envisaged. SUMMARY Recent evidence on sociodemographic determinants of mood disorders confirms associations derived from existing literature. There is also new and emerging evidence on how quality of sleep, diet and the environment influence risk of mood disorders. Culture and ethnicity, depending on context, may contribute to both vulnerability and resilience. Socioeconomic deprivation may be the final common pathway through which several sociodemographic and cultural determinants of mood disorders act.
