Ecological Evidence for Lower Risk of Lymphoma with Greater Exposure to Sunlight and Higher Altitude

Understanding light pollution: Recent advances on its health threats and regulations

The prevalence of artificial lights not only improves the lighting conditions for modern society, but also poses kinds of health threats to human health. Although there are regulations and standards concerning light pollution, few of them are based on the potential contribution of improper lighting to diseases. Therefore, a better understanding of the health threats induced by light pollution may promote risk assessment and better regulation of artificial lights, thereby a healthy lighting environment. This review is based on a careful collection of the latest papers from 2018 to 2022 about the health threats of light pollution, both epidemiologically and experimentally. In addition to summing up the novel associations of light pollution with obesity, mental disorders, cancer, etc., we highlight the toxicological mechanism of light pollution via circadian disruption, since light pollution directly interferes with the natural light-dark cycles, and damages the circadian photoentrainment of organisms. And by reviewing the alternations of clock genes and disturbance of melatonin homeostasis induced by artificial lights, we aim to excavate the profound impacts of light pollution based on accumulating studies, thus providing perspectives for future research and guiding relevant regulations and standards.

HIF-Dependent Mechanisms of Relationship between Hypoxia Tolerance and Tumor Development

Oxygen deficiency is one of the key pathogenetic factors determining development and severity of many diseases, including inflammatory, infectious diseases, and cancer. Lack of oxygen activates the signaling pathway of the hypoxia-inducible transcription factor HIF in cells that has three isoforms, HIF-1, HIF-2, HIF-3, regulating expression of several thousand genes. Throughout tumor progression, HIF activation stimulates angiogenesis, promotes changes in cell metabolism, adhesion, invasiveness, and ability to metastasize. HIF isoforms can play opposite roles in the development of inflammatory and neoplastic processes. Humans and laboratory animals differ both in tolerance to hypoxia and in the levels of expression of HIF and HIF-dependent genes, which may lead to predisposition to the development of certain oncological disorders. In particular, the ratio of different histogenetic types of tumors may vary among people living in the mountains and at the sea level. However, despite the key role of hypoxia at almost all stages of tumor development, basal tolerance to oxygen deficiency is not considered as a factor of predisposition to the tumor growth initiation. In literature, there are many works characterizing the level of local hypoxia in various tumors, and suggesting fundamental approaches to its mitigation by HIF inhibition. HIF inhibitors, as a rule, have a systemic effect on the organism, however, basal tolerance of an organism to hypoxia as well as the level of HIF expression are not taken into account in the process of their use. The review summarizes the literature data on different HIF isoforms and their role in tumor progression, with extrapolation to organisms with high and low tolerance to hypoxia, as well as on the prevalence of various types of tumors in the populations living at high altitudes.

Assessment of some factors of cellular and humoral immunity in radiology workers

Radiation workers in medical diagnostic departments are occupationally exposed to long-term low-dose ionizing radiation, which may cause radiation-induced side effects. This study investigated subtypes of peripheral blood lymphocytes and immunoglobulin levels in workers who were occupationally exposed to X-ray radiation at the Department of Radiology. Seventeen radiology workers received low levels of ionizing radiation as the study group and 18 individuals who were not exposed to radiation were included as the control group. The percentage of lymphocyte subtypes (CD4⁺, CD8⁺ and CD4⁺/CD8⁺) and serum levels of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG and IgM) were measured using peripheral blood samples. Considering all lymphocyte subtypes and serum levels of IgA, IgG and IgM, there was no significant difference between the study and control groups (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in all mentioned parameters regarding gender (P > 0.05). For the length of employment period, there was a significant difference concerning CD4⁺/CD8⁺ (P < 0.05). The findings showed that exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation does not affect the immune system of workers in diagnostic radiology dose level. Because of relatively small samples of workers, it is suggested that these factors be investigated on larger samples of radiology workers.

High altitude and cancer: An old controversy

Ecological studies have found that individuals that live at high altitude regions and in places where ultraviolet radiation is maximal, have lower rates of different types of cancer. However, there is evidence that in these same regions, genetic mutations that are prooncogenic, develop, as they are needed to increase human adaptability to hypoxic environments. Debate has arisen between researchers who consider high altitude environments as suitable for human longevity because of its protective effects against malignancies, and scientists that have reported an increased incidence of different type of cancers in these same regions. Evidence is presented that altitude is related to the development of genetic alterations in micro RNAs, p53 protein, lymphocyte activity, decrease in Fas Ligand and other proapoptotic molecules, as well as increase in prometastatic VGEF an HIF. Notwithstanding, higher vitamin D and ultraviolet B levels, and a better metabolic profile, taken together with lower pollution levels hves been related to lower incidence and mortality rates from malignancies in a series of epidemiological studies.
