Exploring Adolescents' Cancer Journey Through Photovoice: A Narrative Synthesis

Using Online Photovoice to Explore Food Decisions of Families on Low Income: Lessons Learnt During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The method of photovoice has been previously used to effectively engage with socioeconomically disadvantaged groups and explore their eating behaviours. In this methodological article, we draw on our experiences from using photovoice through online interviews with families on low income about their food decisions. A purposive recruitment approach targeted parents of children 2-17 years old who lived on a tight budget across the island of Ireland. Participants provided demographic information and were invited to take photographs of food-related decisions and activities for 1 week during the COVID-19 lockdown. The photographs were then discussed through an online communication platform to generate qualitative data. A total of 28 parents participated in the photo-elicited interviews and shared a total of 642 photographs of factors that influenced their food decisions. Following the interviews, the researchers documented their reflections which focused on (1) participants' engagement with the online photo-elicitation and (2) practical aspects around participant consent and data safety. The participants in our study engaged well with the online photovoice method and shared a variety of photos which provided ample material to facilitate the conversations around their food environment and its impact on their food decisions. Our experiences can provide novel insights into using photovoice in a virtual environment and useful considerations around ethics and data collection for researchers who work with socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. Photo-elicited interviews offer an engaging and flexible data collection technique that can highlight issues informing future priorities of healthcare policy.

Qualitative Research and Cancer Nursing: A Guide for Novice Researchers

OBJECTIVE

To introduce the cancer nurse to qualitative research.

DATA SOURCES

A search of published literature including articles and books was conducted to inform the article using University libraries (University of Galway and University of Glasgow) and CINAHL, Medline, and Google Scholar databases using broad terms, including qualitative research, qualitative methods, paradigm, qualitative, and cancer nursing.

CONCLUSION

It is important for cancer nurses wishing to read, critically appraise, or undertake qualitative research to understand the origins and different methods employed in qualitative research.

This is what life with cancer looks like: exploring experiences of adolescent and young adults with cancer using two visual approaches

INTRODUCTION

Talking about illness experience can be challenging for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer. Visual tools, in addition to spoken language, might make this easier, such as rich pictures and photovoice. We aimed to obtain a comprehensive view of the cancer experience of AYAs by using rich pictures and photovoice.

METHODS

AYAs (18-35 years old) who had any type of cancer, or were in remission from cancer, were eligible. AYAs drew rich pictures about their experience of living with cancer and explained these during subsequent interviews. Some of the AYAs also participated in photovoice and spent two days with a photographer to make photos about their illness experience. Rich pictures and photos were first analyzed separately, using open coding, after which the identified themes were compared.

RESULTS

Twelve AYAs made rich pictures (RPs), of whom seven also participated in photovoice. The two most predominant themes emerging from the data were struggles related to the future and defining one's identity. The AYAs expressed concerns for the future related to relationships, education, and employment. Relating to defining one's identity, many AYAs expressed that the cancer had a negative impact on their body- and self-image. The main themes were visible in the RPs as well as in the photovoice; however, subtle differences in sub-themes were found.

CONCLUSIONS

We found that cancer has an effect on many aspects of AYAs' lives. Further research on how the identified themes play a role in the lives of AYAs with cancer is needed.

Thirty Years of Implementing the Photovoice Method: Insights From a Review of Reviews

As the use of the photovoice method has proliferated over the past three decades, several literature reviews have been conducted about implementing the method in the context of health promotion research and practice. Challenges emerged from the literature frequently enough to be reported in several reviews. As such, the purpose of this "review of reviews" was to identify and describe the various challenges to implementing photovoice as reported in published literature reviews. Taken together, the sum of the reviews' critiques about photovoice may be of particular use for developing solutions regarding challenges that limit the utility and outcomes of the method. The literature reviews included in this study were identified using PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and backward/forward chaining. The final 15 review articles included in the study were analyzed for the challenges of implementing photovoice described in each review. Four major themes emerged from the reviews: (1) inconsistent adherence to the photovoice method, (2) inconsistent evaluation of photovoice outcomes and impacts, (3) implementation challenges with specific populations, and (4) inconsistent reporting and adherence to ethical procedures. For those conducting photovoice projects in the future, the implications of the findings include maximizing participant engagement in the project from start to finish, evaluating photovoice projects for effectiveness in producing community change, and reporting ethical procedures.

Identification of Evidence for Key Positive Psychological Constructs in Pediatric and Adolescent/Young Adult Patients with Cancer: A Scoping Review

Introduction: Children and adolescents/young adults (AYAs) with cancer are a vulnerable population susceptible to numerous late effects, such as fatigue and depression, which may diminish their long-term psychological, physical, spiritual, and emotional health. A well-rounded understanding of how positive psychological constructs affect the quality of care and treatment outcomes is therefore warranted.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review of 15 positive psychological constructs in children and AYAs with cancer. The primary research questions were (1) what is known about positive psychological constructs in children and AYAs with cancer; (2) what value is ascribed to these constructs by patients?

Results: Two hundred seventy-six articles were included after database search and screening. These studies were mostly observational or qualitative and conducted in North America. Constructs were often poorly defined, and measurement tools used to gather data were wide ranging. Numerous factors were correlated with increased or decreased expression of certain constructs, but overall themes were difficult to identify. Similarly, patients often spoke of what increased or decreased expression of a construct, with less emphasis on what they implicitly value.

Discussion: This scoping review found ample evidence for what increases or decreases expression of positive psychological constructs, but this evidence was observational and often conflicting. In the future, we recommend the development of a core set of psychological outcomes, with definitions and corresponding measurement tools. We further recommend an emphasis on randomized trials to more rigorously study how expression of constructs can be improved and what effect this has on the quality of life.

The Development and Process Evaluation of a 3-Day Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Group Program for Adolescent Cancer Survivors

Background

Adolescents diagnosed with cancer experience unique psychosocial concerns that persist beyond treatment completion into longer-term survivorship. Camp-based, group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) programs are a potential model for providing evidence-informed psychological and peer support to adolescent cancer survivors.

Objective

This paper describes the development and exploration of the feasibility and acceptability of such a program, Places You’ll Go. This manualised program incorporates five 90-min group ACT sessions within a 3-day camp, teaching ACT strategies in the context of psychosocial impacts of cancer.

Method

Eight facilitators and twenty-eight Australian adolescent cancer survivors (68% female; age range 12–17 years, M = 15.4 years) participated in the program and evaluation. Feasibility was assessed using facilitator-reported session duration, attendance, quality and content fidelity; facilitators also completed interviews after program completion. Young people completed surveys on program acceptability at the end of each session and at program completion.

Results

All planned sessions were delivered, with 97% attendance and high fidelity in manualised program delivery. All young people were mostly or very satisfied and would recommend the program to another cancer survivor. Opportunities for peer connection and skill development contributed to perceived program acceptability.

Conclusions

The Places You’ll Go program was acceptable and feasible to deliver. It is a promising community-based model for promoting peer support and well-being in adolescent cancer survivors, indicating the potential of ACT-based approaches for this population. Further work is underway to evaluate whether the program improves psychosocial wellbeing among participants, and if this is linked to the therapeutic mechanisms underpinning ACT.

Reaching Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Patients Through Social Media: Impact of the Photographs of Meaning Program

Purpose: This study assessed the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of the Photographs of Meaning Program for Adolescent and Young Adult cancer patients and survivors (POM-AYA). Methods: POM-AYA is a structured 10-week meaning-based intervention in which participants post photographs and accompanying narratives through a social media platform. Measures of depression, overall quality of life (QoL), and spiritual well-being were assessed on consent (T1), after completing the 10-week intervention (T2) and 2 months' postintervention (T3). Participants also completed a satisfaction questionnaire and follow-up semi-structured interviews. Results: Thirty AYA cancer patients and survivors (ages 17-36) were enrolled in the study. At T2, depressive symptoms were significantly lower and QoL was significantly higher compared with T1. These gains were maintained at T3. There were no significant differences in reported spiritual well-being across the study period. Overall, participants reported high rates of study satisfaction in both the survey and qualitative feedback. Conclusion: POM-AYA appears to be a potentially beneficial, widely accessible intervention in reducing depressive symptoms and increasing QoL in AYA cancer patients and survivors.

Through our eyes: A photovoice intervention for adolescents on active cancer treatment

RESEARCH APPROACH

Photovoice, a participatory action research methodology, is a novel and promising intervention for adolescents with cancer. Photovoice was used as an intervention for eliciting and addressing the psychosocial needs of adolescents on active cancer treatment.

PARTICIPANTS

Six adolescents, aged thirteen to seventeen years old, who were on active treatment or had completed treatment in the three months prior to recruitment participated in a seven-week photovoice group that took place from March to May 2017. Methodological Approach: Each of the seven sessions was recorded and later transcribed. A content analysis was used to identify themes that were analyzed using an integrated framework developed earlier. The framework broadly categorized the themes into six domains: (i) physical changes, (ii) psychosocial impacts, (iii) short-term social impacts, (iv) long-term social impacts, (v) impacts on holistic well-being, and (vi) informational needs.

INTERPRETATION

Photovoice is an effective intervention for eliciting and addressing the psychosocial needs of adolescents on active cancer treatment.
