Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the combined effect of fluoride varnish to Er:YAG or Nd:YAG laser on permeability of eroded root dentine. DESIGN Sixty slabs of bovine root dentine (2×2×2mm) were eroded with citric acid 0.3% (pH 3.2) during 2h and then kept in artificial saliva during 24h. Specimens were randomly assigned in 6 groups (n=10), to receive the following treatments: fluoride varnish; fluoride varnish+Er:YAG laser; fluoride varnish+Nd:YAG laser; non-fluoride varnish; non-fluoride varnish+Er:YAG laser; non-fluoride varnish+Nd:YAG laser. The Er:YAG (100mJ, 3Hz) and Nd:YAG (70mJ, 15Hz) were applied for 10s. Specimens were subjected to further erosive challenges with citric acid 0.3% 4×/day, during 1min, for 5 days, remaining in artificial saliva between cycles. Dentin permeability was then assessed. Two-way ANOVA demonstrated no significant interaction between laser and varnish (p=0.858). RESULTS No effect was also detected for the main factor varnish (p=0.768), while permeability of eroded root dentin was significantly lower when such substrate was laser-irradiated, no matter the laser source (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS This study concluded that Er:YAG and Nd:YAG lasers can be employed to control the permeability of eroded root dentin, regardless of fluoride varnish application.

Abstract
Laser irradiation has been investigated in terms of preventing leakage in retrofilled root canals. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) laser on the bacterial leakage of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-retrofilled roots. In this ex vivo experimental study, 90 single-rooted incisor teeth were filled with gutta-percha and AH26 sealer. The apical 3 mm of all the roots were resected and 3-mm retrocavities were prepared by an ultrasonic device. The specimens were randomly divided into two experimental (n = 25), one positive control (n = 10), and two negative control (n = 10) groups. In the laser + MTA group, the cavity walls were irradiated by Nd: YAG laser prior to MTA placement. In the MTA group, MTA was placed without laser irradiation. The root surfaces were covered with two layers of nail varnish except for the apical 2 mm. The specimens were then embedded in a bacterial leakage test system and examined daily for 90 days. Contamination periods were recorded. Data were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier and Mann-Whitney U tests (α = 0.05). Five teeth with and five teeth without laser irradiation underwent scanning electron microscopic evaluation. The specimens in the laser + MTA group were contaminated earlier than those in the MTA group (p < 0.05). Comparison of survival times between the two groups showed significant differences (p < 0.05). Nd: YAG laser irradiation can decrease the sealing capacity of MTA in comparison to the apical seal achieved by MTA without laser irradiation. Further studies are recommended to provide a better seal for the MTA-retrofilled teeth after laser irradiation.

Abstract
Dentinal hypersensitivity is a painful condition that occurs following periodontal treatment. Many treatment alternatives have been considered for this problem, including treatments with laser and dentinal adhesives. This study compared the sealing ability of Nd:YAG laser versus a new resin in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs. Ten human premolars were sectioned yielding 30 specimens of each premolar, which were randomly divided into three groups. The laser group was irradiated by Nd:YAG laser (1 W, 10 Hz, 60 s), the resin group was treated with the new Seal & Protect resin according to the manufacturer's instructions, and the third group served as the control group and did not receive any interventions. After preparation and gold coating of the samples, they were photographed by SEM at two magnifications (1500× and 4000×). The number and diameter (μm) of the dentinal tubules were recorded in selected fields, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests were used to determine significant differences between groups. The ANOVA results revealed significant differences in both the mean number (P < 0.001) and diameter (P < 0.05) among the three groups. Further statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the laser group and the resin group in both outcome measures (P < 0.05). Thus, both Nd:YAG laser and the new resin reduced the number and diameter of open dentinal tubules, a result that also explains the desensitization mechanism of these interventions. We further conclude that application of the new resin is more effective than Nd:YAG laser in minimizing the number and diameter of exposed dentinal tubules.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Root surface biomodification has been used to treat gingival recession and periodontitis. The principle for this procedure is that removing the smear layer from the root surfaces exposes collagen fibers, which leads to improved healing. Clinical studies generally have failed to find any improvement in clinical parameters when using such procedures, however. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the outcome of gingival recession therapy using the subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) with or without Nd:YAG laser application for root surface biomodification. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-four teeth in 17 patients with Miller Class 1 and 2 recession were treated with SCTG with (test group) or without (control group) the application of Nd:YAG laser (1 W, 10 Hz, 100 mj, 60 s, 1064 nm). Clinical attachment level (CAL), recession depth (RD), recession width (RW), and probing depth (PD) were measured at baseline and six months postsurgery. RESULTS Both treatments yielded significant improvements in terms of RD and RW decrease and CAL gain compared to baseline values. For test and control groups, the average root coverage was 33% and 77%, respectively (p < 0.05), and the complete root coverage was 18% and 65%, respectively (p < 0.05). The control group showed a greater reduction in RD and RW compared with the test group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The use of Nd:YAG laser as a root surface biomodifier negatively affected the outcome of root coverage with the SCTG.

Abstract
This study evaluated the bond strength of resin composite to dentin, mediated by a self-etching adhesive, following the application of various dentin desensitizing treatments and artificial saliva storage. The buccal cervical areas of 24 extracted human third molars were ground flat to expose cervical dentin. The dentin surfaces were polished with 1200-grit SiC paper, then the teeth were randomly assigned to six groups, five desensitizing treatments and one control: Group I-VivaSens; Group II-Fluor Protector; Group III-Isodan; Group IV-Futura Bond NR; Group V-Nd:YAG laser and Group VI-Control (without application of a desensitizing agent). After applying the desensitizing treatments and storing the molars in artificial saliva for 14 days at 37 degrees C, Futura Bond NR was used to bond resin composite to dentin. TPH composite build-ups were constructed incrementally to a height of 5 mm. The teeth were sectioned to obtain bonded slices of 0.7 mm thick specimens containing the resin-composite joint. The specimens were then trimmed into an hourglass shape and subsequently subjected to microtensile testing at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis analysis and multiple comparisons test. The control (Group VI) and Futura Bond NR self-etching treatment (Group IV) group yielded statistically significant higher bond strength values than the other desensitizing treatment groups tested (p < 0.005). While pretreatment of dentin surfaces with desensitizing agents (Fluor Protector, VivaSens and Isodan) and laser (Nd:YAG) reduced the bond strength values of the resin composite, higher bond strengths were achieved using a self-etching adhesive (Futura Bond NR) as a desensitizing agent.
