Factors Related to Pulmonary Function Status of Animal Feed Industry Workers in Surabaya

Introduction: Workplace air that contains dust and microorganism when inhaled by workers into respiratory tract can accumulate and cause lung function disorder. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the concentrations of dust with the concentration of microorganism and analyze the association of worker characteristics, dust and microorganism concentration to lung physiology status. Method: This study adopted cross sectional design. The sample consisted of 24 workers who were randomly selected from factory and 10 workers who were totally selected from the administration area for respirable dust, microorganism concentration monitoring and workers’ characteristics data collecting. Result: Concentration of respirable dust has strong correlation with bacteria (rs = 0.704) and fungi (rs = 0.662) concentration. Variables that had significant association with pulmonary function status were age (p = 0.000), tenure (p = 0.008), the degree of smokers (p = 0.000), the dust concentration (p = 0.000), the bacteria concentration (p = 0.000), and the fungi concentration (p = 0.000), while the use of PPE mask (p = 0.890) had no significant association with pulmonary function status. Conclusion: Factors that related to pulmonary function status are age, tenure, degree of smokers, respirable dust, bacteria, and fungi concentration. Respirable dust concentration has significant positive correlation with bacteria and fungi concentration.Keywords: concentration of dust, concentration of microorganism, pulmonary function status

Special endpoint and product specific considerations in pharmaceutical acceptable daily exposure derivation

Recently, a guideline has been published by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on setting safe limits, permitted daily exposures (PDE) [also called acceptable daily exposures (ADE)], for medicines manufactured in multi-product facilities. The ADE provides a safe exposure limit for inadvertent exposure of a drug due to cross-contamination in manufacturing. The ADE determination encompasses a standard risk assessment, requiring an understanding of the toxicological and pharmacological effects, the mechanism of action, drug compound class, and the dose-response as well as the pharmacokinetic properties of the compound. While the ADE concept has broad application in pharmaceutical safety there are also nuances and specific challenges associated with some toxicological endpoints or drug product categories. In this manuscript we discuss considerations for setting ADEs when the following specific adverse health endpoints may constitute the critical effect: genotoxicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity (DART), and immune system modulation (immunostimulation or immunosuppression), and for specific drug classes, including antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), emerging medicinal therapeutic compounds, and compounds with limited datasets. These are challenging toxicological scenarios that require a careful evaluation of all of the available information in order to establish a health-based safe level.

The Impact of Physical and Ergonomic Hazards on Poultry Abattoir Processing Workers: A Review

The poultry abattoir industry continues to grow and contribute significantly to the gross domestic product in many countries. The industry expects working shifts of eight to eleven hours, during which workers are exposed to occupational hazards which include physical hazards ranging from noise, vibration, exposure to cold and ergonomic stress from manual, repetitive tasks that require force. A PubMed, Medline and Science Direct online database search, using specific keywords was conducted and the results confirmed that physical and ergonomic hazards impact on abattoir processing workers health, with harm not only to workers’ health but also as an economic burden due to the loss of their livelihoods and the need for treatment and compensation in the industry. This review endeavours to highlight the contribution poultry processing plays in the development of physical agents and ergonomic stress related occupational diseases in poultry abattoir processing workers. The impact includes noise-induced hearing loss, increased blood pressure, menstrual and work related upper limb disorders. These are summarised as a quick reference guide for poultry abattoir owners, abattoir workers, poultry associations, occupational hygienists and medical practitioners to assist in the safer management of occupational health in poultry abattoirs.

Monitoring of occupational and environmental aeroallergens-- EAACI Position Paper. Concerted action of the EAACI IG Occupational Allergy and Aerobiology & Air Pollution

Exposure to high molecular weight sensitizers of biological origin is an important risk factor for the development of asthma and rhinitis. Most of the causal allergens have been defined based on their reactivity with IgE antibodies, and in many cases, the molecular structure and function of the allergens have been established. Significant information on allergen levels that cause sensitization and allergic symptoms for several major environmental and occupational allergens has been reported. Monitoring of high molecular weight allergens and allergen carrier particles is an important part of the management of allergic respiratory diseases and requires standardized allergen assessment methods for occupational and environmental (indoor and outdoor) allergen exposure. The aim of this EAACI task force was to review the essential points for monitoring environmental and occupational allergen exposure including sampling strategies and methods, processing of dust samples, allergen analysis, and quantification. The paper includes a summary of different methods for sampling and allergen quantification, as well as their pros and cons for various exposure settings. Recommendations are being made for different exposure scenarios.
