An invasive plant rapidly increased the similarity of soil fungal pathogen communities

Fungi of Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA: a spatial survey

The natural system at Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA was augmented by the construction of a rock-filled railroad causeway in 1960, creating two lakes at one site. The north arm is sequestered from the mountain snowmelt inputs and thus became saturated with salts (250-340 g/L). The south arm is a flourishing ecosystem with moderate salinity (90-190 g/L) and a significant body of water for ten million birds on the avian flyways of the western US who engorge themselves on the large biomass of brine flies and shrimp. The sediments around the lake shores include calcium carbonate oolitic sand and clay, and further away from the saltwater margins, a zone with less saline soil. Here a small number of plants can thrive, including Salicornia and Sueda species. At the north arm at Rozel Point, halite crystals precipitate in the salt-saturated lake water, calcium sulfate precipitates to form gypsum crystals embedded in the clay, and high molecular weight asphalt seeps from the ground. It is an ecosystem with gradients and extremes, and fungi are up to the challenge. We have collected data on Great Salt Lake fungi from a variety of studies and present them here in a spatial survey. Combining knowledge of cultivation studies as well as environmental DNA work, we discuss the genera prevalent in and around this unique ecosystem. A wide diversity of taxa were found in multiple microniches of the lake, suggesting significant roles for these genera: Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Clydae, Coniochaeta, Cryptococcus, Malassezia, Nectria, Penicillium, Powellomyces, Rhizophlyctis, and Wallemia. Considering the species present and the features of Great Salt Lake as a terminal basin, we discuss of the possible roles of the fungi. These include not only nutrient cycling, toxin mediation, and predation for the ecosystem, but also roles that would enable other life to thrive in the water and on the shore. Many genera that we discovered may help other organisms in alleviating salinity stress, promoting growth, or affording protection from dehydration. The diverse taxa of Great Salt Lake fungi provide important benefits for the ecosystem.

Aboveground herbivory can promote exotic plant invasion through intra- and interspecific aboveground-belowground interactions

Aboveground herbivores and soil biota profoundly affect plant invasions. However, how they interactively affect plant invasions through plant-soil feedbacks (PSFs) remains unclear. To explore how herbivory by the introduced beetle Agasicles hygrophila affects Alternanthera philoxeroides invasions in China, we integrated multiyear field surveys and a 2-yr PSF experiment, in which we examined how herbivory affects PSFs on the performance of native and invasive plants and the introduced beetles. Despite increased herbivory from A. hygrophila, A. philoxeroides dominance over co-occurring congeneric native Alternanthera sessilis remained constant from 2014 to 2019. While occurring at lower abundances, A. sessilis experienced similar herbivore damage, suggesting apparent competitive effects. Our experiments revealed that herbivory on A. philoxeroides altered soil microbial communities, prolonged its negative PSF on A. sessilis, and decreased A. hygrophila larvae performance on the next-generation invasive plants. Consequently, A. hygrophila larvae performed better on leaves of natives than those of invasives when grown in soils conditioned by invasive plants defoliated by the introduced beetles. Our findings suggest that aboveground herbivory might promote rather than suppress A. philoxeroides invasion by enhancing its soil-mediated self-reinforcement, providing a novel mechanistic understanding of plant invasions. These findings highlight the need to incorporate an aboveground-belowground perspective during the assessment of potential biocontrol agents.

Leguminous cover crops and soya increased soil fungal diversity and suppressed pathotrophs caused by continuous cereal cropping

The enrichment of soil-borne fungal pathogens and a high input of mineral fertilizer in the continuous cropping of cereal crops have raised a concern about soil health deterioration. Conversion of continuous cereal cropping to a legume-involved system alters the soil fungal community. However, when a leguminous cover crop is grown with a succeeding legume grain crop such as soya (Glycine max L. Merril), the effects on the soil fungal community when two legumes are involved in the crop system remain unclear. Thus, the effects of the cover crop on the soil fungal community under a succession of soya and a succession of maize (Zea mays L.) were clarified: a continuous wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-maize cropping system was converted to new rotation systems with three cover crop treatments: leguminous vetch (Vicia sativa L.), a mixture of vetch and rye (Secale cereale L.), and fallow, succeeded by soya or maize in this study. The soil fungal community at the harvest of soya and maize were determined using high-throughput sequencing of ITS2 amplicons. Compared to a wheat-maize rotation system, all of the new rotation systems that involved leguminous crops or fallow increased the soil fungal diversity and suppressed pathotrophs by reducing the soil NH4 +, NO3 -, available K, and available P concentrations. Different cover crops changed the fungal community composition, but their effect was overwhelmed by the strong effect of succeeding soya, which induced minor shifts among the cover crop treatments under soya than maize. The Vetch-Soya system exhibited the highest fungal diversity, which have been due to an increase of symbiotrophs. Replacing wheat with mixed vetch and rye most greatly suppressed the pathotrophs, and this suppression effect was stronger when succeeded by maize than by soya. These results showed the short-term benefits of legume-legume succession and legume-cereal mixed cover crops for increasing fungal diversity and suppressing pathotrophs. Further study is needed to examine the long-term effects of Vetch-Soya on the accumulation of legume-associated pathogens.

Latitudinal variation in the diversity and composition of various organisms associated with an exotic plant: the role of climate and plant invasion

Climate and plant invasion can shape biotic communities at large spatial scales. Yet, how diverse groups of organisms associated with an invasive plant change simultaneously with latitude and the roles of climate and plant invasion remains unclear. We conducted a field survey of plants (native vs exotic), soil fungi (pathogenic, saprotrophic, arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) and ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi) and arthropods (herbivores, predators and detritivores) associated with the invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides at 49 sites spanning 14 latitudinal degrees in China. Results showed that diversity and composition of these functional groups changed differently with latitude, partially due to their specific responses to climate, invasion of A. philoxeroides and other biotic environments. Moreover, A. philoxeroides invasion and/or composition of other plants, rather than climate, predicted the diversity and richness of major functional groups and partly explained variance in composition of putative fungal pathogens. Our results suggest that climate and plant invasion could affect the diversity and composition of diverse groups of organisms simultaneously and their relative importance might vary among functional groups. Thus, it is necessary to explore latitudinal patterns and underlying drivers of diverse groups of organisms simultaneously to improve our ability to predict and mitigate threats posed by plant invasion and climate change.
