Leaf surface traits contributing to wettability, water interception and uptake of above-ground water sources in shrubs of Patagonian arid ecosystems

Wet canopy photosynthesis in a temperate Japanese cypress forest

This study aimed to reveal the mechanism and significance of wet canopy photosynthesis during and after rainfall in temperate coniferous ecosystems by evaluating the influence of abaxial leaf interception on wet canopy photosynthesis. We used the eddy covariance method in conjunction with an enclosed-path gas analyser to conduct continuous ecosystem CO2 flux observations in a Japanese cypress forest within the temperate Asian monsoon area over 3 years. The observation shows that wet-canopy CO2 uptake predominantly occurred during the post-rainfall canopy-wet period rather than the during-rainfall period. Then, the measured canopy-wet net ecosystem exchange was compared with the soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer multilayer model simulations under different parameter settings of the abaxial (lower) leaf surface wet area ratio. The multilayer model predicted net ecosystem exchange most accurately when it assumed the wet area ratio of the abaxial surface was 50% both during and after rainfall. For the wet canopy both during and after rainfall, the model overestimated CO2 uptake when it assumed no abaxial interception in the simulation, but underestimated CO2 uptake when it assumed that the entire abaxial leaf surface was wet. These results suggest that the abaxial surface of the Japanese cypress leaf is only partly wet to maintain stomatal openness and a low level of photosynthesis. These results allow for an evaluation of the effect of rainfall on forest carbon circulation under a changing climate, facilitating an improvement of ecosystem carbon exchange models.

The cellular consequences of particulate matter pollutants in plants: Safeguarding the harmonious integration of structure and function

Particulate matter (PM) pollution is one of the pressing environmental concerns confronting human civilization in the face of the Anthropocene era. Plants are continuously exposed to an accelerating PM, threatening their growth and productivity. Although plants and plant-based infrastructures can potentially reduce ambient air pollutants, PM still affects them morphologically, anatomically, and physiologically. This review comprehensively summarizes an up-to-date review of plant-PM interaction among different functional plant groups, PM deposition and penetration through aboveground and belowground plant parts, and plants' cellular strategies. Upon exposure, PM represses lipid desaturases, eventually leading to modification of cell wall and membrane and altering cell fluidity; consequently, plants can sense the pollutants and, thus, adapt different cellular strategies. The PM also causes a reduction in the photosynthetically active radiation. The study demonstrated that plants reduce stomatal density to avoid PM uptake and increase stomatal index to compensate for decreased gaseous exchange efficiency and transpiration rates. Furthermore, genes and gene sets associated with photosynthesis, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and the TCA cycle were dramatically lowered by PM stress. Several transcription factors, including MYB, C2H2, C3H, G2-like, and WRKY were induced, and metabolites such as proline and soluble sugar were accumulated to increase resistance against stressors. In addition, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants were also accumulated to scavenge the PM-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). Taken together, this review provides an insight into plants' underlying cellular mechanisms and gene regulatory networks in response to the PM to determine strategies to preserve their structural and functional blend in the face of particulate pollution. The study concludes by recommending that future research should precisely focus on plants' response to short- and long-term PM exposure.

Revisiting an ecophysiological oddity: Hydathode-mediated foliar water uptake in Crassula species from southern Africa

Hydathodes are usually associated with water exudation in plants. However, foliar water uptake (FWU) through the hydathodes has long been suspected in the leaf-succulent genus Crassula (Crassulaceae), a highly diverse group in southern Africa, and, to our knowledge, no empirical observations exist in the literature that unequivocally link FWU to hydathodes in this genus. FWU is expected to be particularly beneficial on the arid western side of southern Africa, where up to 50% of Crassula species occur and where periodically high air humidity leads to fog and/or dew formation. To investigate if hydathode-mediated FWU is operational in different Crassula species, we used the apoplastic fluorescent tracer Lucifer Yellow in combination with different imaging techniques. Our images of dye-treated leaves confirm that hydathode-mediated FWU does indeed occur in Crassula and that it might be widespread across the genus. Hydathodes in Crassula serve as moisture-harvesting structures, besides their more common purpose of guttation, an adaptation that has likely played an important role in the evolutionary history of the genus. Our observations suggest that ability for FWU is independent of geographical distribution and not restricted to arid environments under fog influence, as FWU is also operational in Crassula species from the rather humid eastern side of southern Africa. Our observations point towards no apparent link between FWU ability and overall leaf surface wettability in Crassula. Instead, the hierarchically sculptured leaf surfaces of several Crassula species may facilitate FWU due to hydrophilic leaf surface microdomains, even in seemingly hydrophobic species. Overall, these results confirm the ecophysiological relevance of hydathode-mediated FWU in Crassula and reassert the importance of atmospheric humidity for some arid-adapted plant groups.

How tank-mix adjuvant type and concentration influence the contact angle on wheat leaf surface

Currently, the utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for spraying pesticides is a prevalent issue in Asian countries. Improving the pesticide efficiency of UAV spraying is a major challenge for researchers. One of the factors that affect the efficiency is the wetting property of the spraying solutions on crop leaves. Tank-mix adjuvants, which can modify the wetting ability of the solutions, are often used for foliar application. However, different types and concentrations of tank-mix adjuvants may have different impacts on the wetting properties of droplets. In this article, we investigated the effects of four tank-mix adjuvants, Beidatong (BDT), Velezia Pro (VP), Nongjianfei (NJF), and Lieying (LY), on the dynamic contact angle (CA) values of droplets on the adaxial surface of wheat leaves. We measured the dynamic CA values of various concentrations of each adjuvant solution and determined the optimal concentrations based on the CA values, droplet spreading time, and cost. The results showed that adding any of the four adjuvants decreased the CA values, but the patterns of decrease varied among them. The CAs of BDT and VP solutions decreased slowly during the observation time (0-8.13 s), while those of NJF and LY solutions decreased rapidly throughout the observation period. According to the dynamic CA values of different concentrations, the optimal concentrations of BDT, VP, NJF, and LY for wheat field application were 12%, 16%, 6‰, and 0.3‰, respectively. Alkoxy-modified polytrisiloxane adjuvant (LY) could be recommended as an appropriate tank-mix adjuvant for wheat field application, considering spreading efficiency and cost. This study provides theoretical and practical guidance for selecting and optimizing tank-mix adjuvants for UAV spraying.

High potential for foliar water uptake in early stages of leaf development of three woody angiosperms

Foliar water uptake (FWU) is a widespread mechanism that may help plants cope with drought stress in a wide range of ecosystems. FWU can be affected by various leaf traits, which change during leaf development. We exposed cut and dehydrated leaves to rainwater and measured FWU, changes in leaf water potential after 19 h of FWU (ΔΨ), minimum leaf conductance (gmin ), and leaf wettability (abaxial and adaxial) of leaves of Acer platanoides, Fagus sylvatica, and Sambucus nigra at three developmental stages: unfolding (2-5-day-old), young (1.5-week-old) and mature leaves (8-week-old). FWU and gmin were higher in younger leaves. ΔΨ corresponded to FWU and gmin in all cases but mature leaves of F. sylvatica, where ΔΨ was highest. Most leaves were highly wettable, and at least one leaf surface (adaxial or abaxial) showed a decrease in wettability from unfolding to mature leaves. Young leaves of all studied species showed FWU (unfolding leaves: 14.8 ± 1.1 μmol m-2  s-1 ), which may improve plant water status and thus counterbalance spring transpirational losses due to high gmin . The high wettability of young leaves probably supported FWU. We observed particularly high FWU and respective high ΔΨ in older leaves of F. sylvatica, possibly aided by trichomes.

Plants and water: the search for a comprehensive understanding

We learn early in life sciences classes that water is the solution of life, working in tandem with carbon to make life as we know it possible. Globally, the abundance of water can be misleading, as most of this water is unavailable, being overly salinized in the oceans or locked in deep underground reserves. On land, the critical supply is of freshwater, which is unevenly distributed in space and time. Even the wettest environments can experience episodic water deficit, and flash flooding periodically occurs in arid landscapes. While humanity can capture, store and transport freshwater over large distances to ensure sustained supply, such options are not apparent for plants except in an immediate local context. Plants must make do with the water in their immediate surroundings, whether it be abundant or scarce. How they do this has led to a myriad of adaptive solutions, involving capturing, storing and transporting water. The traits that enable them to optimize water use in a range of hydraulic environments, subject to multivariate selective constraints, are the essence of the discipline of plant-water relations.
