Landscape Context Affects Aphid Parasitism by Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Hymenoptera: Aphidiinae) in Wheat Fields

Winter wheat is Oklahoma's most widely grown crop, and is planted during September and October, grows from fall through spring, and is harvested in June. Winter wheat fields are typically interspersed in a mosaic of habitats in other uses, and we hypothesized that the spatial and temporal composition and configuration of landscape elements, which contribute to agroecosystem diversity also influence biological control of common aphid pests. The parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson; Hymenoptera: Aphidiinae) is highly effective at reducing aphid populations in wheat in Oklahoma, and though a great deal is known about the biology and ecology of L. testaceipes, there are gaps in knowledge that limit predicting when and where it will be effective at controlling aphid infestations in wheat. Our objective was to determine the influence of landscape structure on parasitism of cereal aphids by L. testaceipes in wheat fields early in the growing season when aphid and parasitoid colonization occurs and later in the growing season when aphid and parasitoid populations are established in wheat fields. Seventy fields were studied during the three growing seasons. Significant correlations between parasitism by L. testaceipes and landscape variables existed for patch density, fractal dimension, Shannon's patch diversity index, percent wheat, percent summer crops, and percent wooded land. Correlations between parasitism and landscape variables were generally greatest at a 3.2 km radius surrounding the wheat field. Correlations between parasitism and landscape variables that would be expected to increase with increasing landscape diversity were usually positive. Subsequent regression models for L. testaceipes parasitism in wheat fields in autumn and spring showed that landscape variables influenced parasitism and indicated that parasitism increased with increasing landscape diversity. Overall, results indicate that L. testaceipes utilizes multiple habitats throughout the year depending on their availability and acceptability, and frequently disperses among habitats. Colonization of wheat fields by L. testaceipes in autumn appears to be enhanced by proximity to fields of summer crops and semi-natural habitats other than grasslands.

Aphidophagous parasitoids can forage wheat crops before aphid infestation, Parana State, Brazil

Aphid parasitoids are common in Brazilian wheat fields, and parasitize aphids at the wheat tillering stage. However, there is little information available about when this natural enemy occurs in wheat crops. This study investigated the initial occurrence of aphid parasitoids in four commercial wheat crops in northern Paraná during the 2009 crop season. We installed two Malaise traps at each wheat farm, and 400 tillers were assessed weekly in each field for aphid abundance. During this study, we captured 4,355 aphid parasitoids and 197 aphids. Three species of braconid parasitoids were identified, including Aphidius colemani (Viereck 1912), Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson 1880), and Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh 1855). The aphids species identified were Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus 1758) and Sitobion avenae (Fabricius 1775). This study showed that aphid parasitoids are present in wheat crops even when aphid densities are low, and in one farm, occurred before the aphids colonization. These reports can justified the high efficiency of these natural enemies against aphids in wheat fields.

Herbivore-induced plant volatiles as cues for habitat assessment by a foraging parasitoid

1. Animals usually require information about the current state of their habitat to optimize their behaviour. For this, they can use a learning process through which their estimate is continually updated according to the cues they perceive. Identifying these cues is a long-standing but still inveterate challenge for ecologists. 2. The use of plant cues by aphid parasitoids for the assessment of habitat profitability and the adaptation of patch exploitation was studied. Grounding on predictions from optimal foraging theory, we tested whether parasitoids exploited host patches less intensively after visiting heavily infested plants than after visiting plants bearing fewer aphids. 3. As predicted, after visiting heavily infested plants parasitoids reduced their residence time and attacked fewer hosts in the next patch. This was the case regardless of whether the aphids were actually present on the first plant, indicating that the cue came from the plant. Moreover, the level of infestation of a plant at some distance from the first plant visited affected parasitoid patch exploitation on the second plant in a similar manner, indicating that the cue was volatile. 4. These results highlight a novel role of herbivore-induced volatiles in parasitoid foraging behaviour, different from the widely studied attraction at a distance.
