Hot and scared: how do heatwaves and predation risk impact resource acquisition and allocation?

Heatwaves are increasingly prevalent and can constrain investment into important life-history traits. In addition to heatwaves, animals regularly encounter threats from other organisms in their environments, such as predators. The combination of these two environmental factors introduces a decision-making conflict-heat exposure requires more food intake to fuel investment into fitness-related traits, but foraging in the presence of predators increases the threat of mortality. Thus, we used female variable field crickets (Gryllus lineaticeps) to investigate the effects of heatwaves in conjunction with predation risk (exposed food and water sources, and exposure to scent from black widow spiders, Latrodectus hesperus) on resource acquisition (food intake) and allocation (investment into ovarian and somatic tissues). A simulated heatwave increased food intake and the allocation of resources to reproductive investment. Crickets exposed to high predation risk reduced food intake, but they were able to maintain reproductive investment at an expense to investment into somatic tissue. Thus, heatwaves and predation risk deprioritized investment into self-maintenance, which may impair key physiological processes. This study is an important step towards understanding the ecology of fear in a warming world.

Trade-off between flight capability and reproduction in Acridoidea (Insecta: Orthoptera)

In many insect taxa, there is a well-established trade-off between flight capability and reproduction. The wing types of Acridoidea exhibit extremely variability from full length to complete loss in many groups, thus, provide a good model for studying the trade-off between flight and reproduction. In this study, we completed the sampling of 63 Acridoidea species, measured the body length, wing length, body weight, flight muscle weight, testis and ovary weight, and the relative wing length (RWL), relative flight muscle weight (RFW), and gonadosomatic index (GSI) of different species were statistically analyzed. The results showed that there were significant differences in RWL, RFW, and GSI among Acridoidea species with different wing types. RFW of long-winged species was significantly higher than that of short-winged and wingless species (p < .01), while GSI of wingless species was higher than that of long-winged and short-winged species. The RWL and RFW had a strong positive correlation in species with different wing types (correlation coefficient r = .8344 for male and .7269 for female, and p < .05), while RFW was strong negatively correlated with GSI (r = -.2649 for male and -.5024 for female, and p < .05). For Acridoidea species with wing dimorphism, males with relatively long wings had higher RFW than that of females with relatively short wings, while females had higher GSI. Phylogenetic comparative analysis showed that RWL, RFW, and GSI all had phylogenetic signals and phylogenetic dependence. These results revealed that long-winged individuals are flight capable at the expense of reproduction, while short-winged and wingless individuals cannot fly, but has greater reproductive output. The results support the trade-off between flight and reproduction in Acridoidea.

Trade-offs between weapons and testes do not manifest at high social densities

Social conditions can alter the allocation of resources to reproductive traits. For example, an increase in social density during development is frequently associated with an increase in the testes mass of males. Sperm competition theory assumes that increased investment in testes should come at the expense of investing into precopulatory traits, such as sexually selected weaponry. However, much remains unknown about the role of the social context on the concurrent, relative investment in both testes and weapons. We found that the leaf-footed cactus bug, Narnia femorata (Hemiptera: Coreidae), grew nearly 20% larger testes when raised in high social densities. In addition to manipulating social density, we used autotomy (limb loss) to limit investment in their hindlimb weapon during development. At low densities, we found that those that lost a weapon during development grew larger testes by adulthood, supporting previous work demonstrating a weapons-testes trade-off. However, at high social densities, males that dropped a hindlimb did not grow larger testes, though testes were already large at this density. These results underscore the importance of the social context to resource allocation patterns within the individual.

High-Stakes Decision-Making by Female Crickets (Gryllus texensis): When to Trade In Wing Muscles for Eggs

AbstractResource-intensive traits, such as dispersal and reproduction, can be difficult to express simultaneously because of resource limitations. One solution is to switch between resource-intensive behaviors. Such phenotypic plasticity is one strategy that organisms use to funnel resources from one expensive trait to another. In crickets (Gryllus texensis), the development and maintenance of flight muscles reduce resource availability for reproduction, leading to physiological trade-offs between the two traits. Long-winged female G. texensis can histolyze their wing muscles, resulting in increased egg production, but they can then no longer fly. Using a diet that mimics food availability in the field, we found that long-winged females adopted one of the three following strategies: early reproduction, intermediate reproduction, and late reproduction. Some late reproducers maintained their flight capability until the end of their natural life span and laid few eggs. If females lost the ability to fly (i.e., their hind wings are removed), they laid eggs earlier, leading to increased reproductive output. However, other environmental cues (e.g., an increased number of mates, increased oviposition substrate quality, or a bout of dispersal flight) had no effect. Late-reproducing females laid 96% fewer eggs than early reproducers, suggesting that late reproduction exacts a huge fitness cost. Nevertheless, some females maintain their flight muscles to the end of their natural life span in both the lab and the field. We suggest that the ability to fly allows for bet hedging against an environmental catastrophe (e.g., drought or flood). This benefit may help explain the persistence of late-reproducing long-winged females, despite the cost of this choice. As climate change increases drought and flood in Texas, late dispersal may be one factor that helps this species survive in the future. An increased understanding of factors that maintain seemingly low fitness strategies can help us predict the resilience of species under climate change.
