Glacier retreat in the High Arctic: opportunity or threat for ectomycorrhizal diversity?

Biogeography and community assembly of soil fungi from alpine meadows in southwestern China show the importance of climatic selection

Soil fungi are pivotal in alpine and arctic ecosystems that are vulnerable to climate changes. Previous studies have shown broad connections between soil fungi in the arctic and alpine regions, but most of these studies are mainly from Europe and North America, with more sporadic studies from East Asia. Currently, little is known about the biogeographic relationships between soil fungi in alpine meadows of southwestern China (AMSC) and other regions of the world. In addition, the regional-scale spatial patterns of fungal communities in the AMSC, as well as their driving factors and ecological processes, are also poorly understood. In this study, we collected roots and surrounding soils of two dominant ectomycorrhizal plants, Bistorta vivipara and B. macrophylla from the AMSC, and performed bioinformatic and statistical analyses based on high-throughput sequencing of ITS2 amplicons. We found that: (1) fungi from the AMSC were closely related with those from boreal forests and tundra, and saprotrophic fungi had higher dispersal potential than ectomycorrhizal fungi; (2) community compositions exhibited clear divergences among geographic regions and between root and soil samples; (3) climate was the predominant factor driving regional-scale spatial patterns but had less explanatory power for saprotrophic and total fungi from roots than those from soils; (4) homogeneous selection and drift were the key ecological processes governing community assembly, but in communities of saprotrophic and total fungi from soil samples, drift contributed less and its role was partially replaced by dispersal limitation. This study highlights the importance of climatic selection and stochastic processes on fungal community assembly in alpine regions, and emphasizes the significance of simultaneously investigating fungi with different trophic modes and from both roots and soils.

Diversity and co-occurrence networks of bacterial and fungal communities on two typical debris-covered glaciers, southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Debris-covered glaciers (DCGs) are globally distributed and thought to contain greater microbial diversity than clean surface continental glaciers, but the ecological characteristics of microbial communities on the surface of DCGs have remained underexplored. Here, we investigated bacterial and fungal diversity and co-occurrence networks on the supraglacial debris habitat of two DCGs (Hailuogou and Dagongba Glaciers) in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. We found that the supraglacial debris harbored abundant microbes with Proteobacteria occupying more than half (51.5%) of the total bacteria operational taxonomic units. The composition, diversity, and co-occurrence networks of both bacterial and fungal communities in the debris were significantly different between Hailuogou Glacier and Dagongba Glacier even though the glaciers are geographically adjacent within the same mountain range. Bacteria were more diverse in the debris of the Dagongba Glacier, where a lower surface velocity and thicker debris layer allowed the supraglacial debris to continuously weather and accumulate nutrients. Fungi were more diverse in the debris of the Hailuogou Glacier, which experiences a wetter monsoonal climate, is richer in calcium, has greater debris instability, and greater ice velocity than the Dagongba Glacier. These factors may provide ideal conditions for the dispersal and propagation of fungi spores on the Hailuogou Glacier. In addition, we found an obvious gradient of bacterial diversity along the supraglacial debris transect on the Hailuogou Glacier. Bacterial diversity was lower where debris cover was thin and scattered and became more diverse near the glacial terminus in thick, slow-moving debris. No such increasing bacterial pattern was detected on the Dagongba Glacier, which implies a positive relationship of debris age, thickness, and weathering on bacterial diversity. Additionally, a highly connected bacterial co-occurrence network with low modularity was found in the debris of the Hailuogou Glacier. In contrast, debris from the Dagongba Glacier exhibited less connected but more modularized co-occurrence networks of both bacterial and fungal communities. These findings indicate that less disturbed supraglacial debris conditions are crucial for microbes to form stable communities on DCGs.

Cryosphere Microbiome Biobanks for Mountain Glaciers in China

The glaciers in China have an important role as one of the most climate-sensitive constituents of the Tibetan Plateau which is known as the Asian Water Tower. Although the cryosphere is one of the most extreme environments for organisms, the soils of the glacier foreland harbor surprisingly rich microbiomes. A large amount of accelerated glacier retreat accompanied by global warming will not only raise the sea level, but it will also lead to the massive release of a considerable amount of carbon stored in these glaciers. The responses of glacier microbiomes could alter the biogeochemical cycle of carbon and have a complex impact on climate change. Thus, understanding present-day and future glacier microbiome changes is crucial to assess the feedback on climate change and the impacts on ecosystems. To this end, we discuss here the diversity and biogeochemical functions of the microbiomes in Chinese mountain glacier ecosystems.

A non-linear effect of the spatial structure of the soil ectomycorrhizal spore bank on the performance of pine seedlings

The spatial structure of the environment is known to affect ecological processes. Unlike the spatial structure of negative interactions, such as competition and predation, the role of spatial structure in positive interaction has received less attention. We tested how the spatial structure of spores of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) in the soil affects the growth of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) seedlings. Spores were spatially distributed at four different levels of patchiness (1 patch, 4 patches, 8 patches and complete mixing) in 4 L pots (all pots received the same total amount of spores). Based on previous findings, we hypothesized that plant performance would gradually increase from the single patch treatment to the complete mixing. However, we found a non-linear response to patchiness. Specifically, plants were largest in the single patch and complete mixing while those in the 4 and 8 patch treatments were the smallest. This non-monotonic response, which might be the result of spatially determined colonization timing or community composition, suggests that the spatial structure of EMF spores has a complex effect on seedling growth.
