Abstract
The bacterial lag phase is a key period for resuming growth. Despite its significance, the lag phase remains underexplored, particularly in environmental bacteria. Here, we explore the lag phase of the model marine bacterium Phaeobacter inhibens when it transitions from starvation to growth with a microalgal partner. Utilizing transcriptomics and 13 C-labeled metabolomics, our study reveals that methylated compounds, which are abundantly produced by microalgae, shorten the bacterial lag phase. Our findings underscore the significance of methyl groups as a limiting factor during the lag phase and demonstrate that methyl groups can be harvested from algal compounds and assimilated through the methionine cycle. Furthermore, we show that methylated compounds, characteristic of photosynthetic organisms, induce variable reductions in lag times among bacteria associated with algae and plants. These findings highlight the adjustability of the bacterial lag phase and emphasize the importance of studying bacteria in an environmental context. Abstract
Algae and bacteria have complex and intimate interactions in the ocean. Besides mutualism, bacteria have evolved a variety of molecular-based anti-algal strategies. However, limited by the unknown mechanism of synthesis and action of these molecules, these strategies and their global prevalence remain unknown. Here we identify a novel strategy through which a marine representative of the Gammaproteobacteria produced 3,3',5,5'-tetrabromo-2,2'-biphenyldiol (4-BP), that kills or inhibits diverse phytoplankton by inhibiting plastoquinone synthesis and its effect cascades to many other key metabolic processes of the algae. Through comparative genomic analysis between the 4-BP-producing bacterium and its algicidally inactive mutant, combined with gene function verification, we identified the gene cluster responsible for 4-BP synthesis, which contains genes encoding chorismate lyase, flavin-dependent halogenase and cytochrome P450. We demonstrated that in near in situ simulated algal blooming seawater, even low concentrations of 4-BP can cause changes in overall phytoplankton community structure with a decline in dinoflagellates and diatoms. Further analyses of the gene sequences from the Tara Oceans expeditions and 2750 whole genome sequences confirmed the ubiquitous presence of 4-BP synthetic genes in diverse bacterial members in the global ocean, suggesting that it is a bacterial tool potentially widely used in global oceans to mediate bacteria-algae antagonistic relationships.

Abstract
The phycosphere is a unique niche that fosters complex interactions between microalgae and associated bacteria. The formation of this extracellular environment, and the associated bacterial biodiversity, is heavily influenced by the secretion of extracellular polymers, primarily driven by phototrophic organisms. The exopolysaccharides (EPS) represent the largest fraction of the microalgae-derived exudates, which can be specifically used by heterotrophic bacteria as substrates for metabolic processes. Furthermore, it has been proposed that bacteria and their extracellular factors play a role in both the release and composition of the EPS. In this study, two model microorganisms, the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum CCAP 1055/15 and the bacterium Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis TAC125, were co-cultured in a dual system to assess how their interactions modify the phycosphere chemical composition by analyzing the EPS monosaccharide profile released in the culture media by the two partners. We demonstrate that microalgal-bacterial interactions in this simplified model significantly influenced the architecture of their extracellular environment. We observed that the composition of the exo-environment, as described by the EPS monosaccharide profiles, varied under different culture conditions and times of incubation. This study reports an initial characterization of the molecular modifications occurring in the extracellular environment surrounding two relevant representatives of marine systems.
