Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between hearing difficulty and measures of mobility for US adults. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING 2021 National Health Interview Survey. METHODS The survey asked US adults about hearing difficulty and mobility measures, including difficulty walking 100 yards, difficulty climbing 12 steps, and injury from falling within the past 3 months. Multivariable logistic regressions examined the associations between hearing and mobility outcomes, controlling for visual difficulty, medical comorbidities, and various demographic characteristics (age [18-39, 40-64, 65+], race/ethnicity, sex, socioeconomic status). RESULTS The 2021 NHIS surveyed 29,467 adults, representing 253 million people in weighted responses (52% female; mean age 48.3, standard deviation = 18.6). Controlling for covariates, hearing difficulty was associated with increased odds of difficulty walking 100 yards (odds ratio, OR = 1.47, P < .001), difficulty climbing stairs (OR = 1.62, P < .001), and injury from falling in the past 3 months (OR = 1.51, P < .001). There was a significant interaction between age and hearing difficulty for injurious falls; stratifying by age revealed that younger adults (ages 18-39) with hearing difficulty were more likely to report recent harmful falls than their normal hearing peers; this increased risk was greater in magnitude than that observed comparing older adults with and without hearing difficulty. CONCLUSION The hearing difficulty is associated with worsened mobility for US adults and may be a stronger independent predictor of injury from falls for younger adults as compared to older adults. These findings can inform interventions to reduce the burden of declining mobility in adults with hearing difficulty.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hearing impairment may lead to increased communication difficulties for older people, making their social participation less optimistic. However, there is little research on the social participation of older people with hearing impairment, especially based on the characteristics of their social participation. This study aimed to identify different social participation profiles in older people with hearing impairment and to explore sociodemographic characteristics, disease-related characteristics and psychosocial factors with different social participation profiles. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 300 older people with hearing impairment using the sociodemographic questionnaire, the Impact on Participation and Autonomy Questionnaire, the Lubben Social Network Scale-6, Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey and Geriatric Depression Scale-15 from May to August 2023 in a community of Beijing, China. Latent profile analysis was used to analyse the latent profiles of social participation in elderly with hearing impairment. Multiple logistic regression was used to explore the predictors of different profiles. RESULTS The social participation of older people with hearing impairment in the community can be classified into three potential profiles: Profile 1 - high social participation group (76.05 %), Profile 2 - moderate social participation group (17.34 %), Profile 3 - low social participation group (6.61 %). Age, types of chronic diseases, self-reported health, severity of hearing impairment, social network, social support and depression were predictors of different profiles. CONCLUSIONS Nurses should pay attention to the characteristics, depression, social network and support of older people with different hearing impairment to improve social participation in different profiles. IMPLICATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS This was the first study exploring latent profiles of social participation in older people with hearing impairment. Insights from this study are useful for gerontological nursing to distinguish different profiles and further identify the characteristics of different profiles in older people with hearing impairment by characterizing the level of social participation in the community and better implement interventions according to profiles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examined the association between hearing impairment and depression, focusing on the role of restricted social engagement as a mediator and whether the mediating relationship differed between midlife individuals (45-64) and older adults (65+). METHODS Individuals aged 45 and older from the cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2018 were analyzed (N = 3,020). A multiple-group path analysis was conducted to compare midlife individuals (n = 1,774) and older adults (n = 1,246). RESULTS The results indicated that among U.S. adults aged 45 or older, 12.3% reported having serious difficulty hearing (21.2% among older adults vs. 7.4% among midlife adults). In both age groups, significant direct relationship between hearing impairment and depression, as well as indirect relationship via social participation restriction, were found. However, a significant difference was found in the relationship between restricted social participation and depression by age group (i.e. moderated mediation): The coefficient was greater among midlife adults than among older adults (Δbmidlife-older=1.109-0.383 = 0.726, p<.001). CONCLUSION These findings highlight that adverse psychosocial effects of hearing impairment are also an important concern for midlife adults. As the importance of social engagement was greater among midlife adults with hearing impairment, age-specific interventions should be adopted to reduce depression associated with hearing impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Opting to use aquatic or land-based physical therapy exercises to improve balance, gait, quality of life and reduce fall-related outcomes in community-dwelling older adults (CDOAs) is still a questionable clinical decision for physiotherapists. OBJECTIVE Assess the quality of evidence from randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials that used aquatic physical therapy exercises to improve balance, gait, quality of life and reduce fall-related outcomes in CDOAs. METHODS Articles were surveyed in the following databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, LILACS, Web of Science, CENTRAL (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), PEDro, CINAHL, SciELO and Google Scholar, published in any language, up to July 31, 2023. Two independent reviewers extracted the data and assessed evidence quality. The risk of bias of the trials was evaluated by the Cochrane tool and evidence quality by GRADE approach. Review Manager software was used to conduct the meta-analyses. RESULTS 3007 articles were identified in the searches, remaining 33 studies to be read in full, with 11 trials being eligible for this systematic review. The trials included presented low evidence quality for the balance, gait, quality of life and fear of falling. Land-based and aquatic physical therapy exercises improved the outcomes analyzed; however, aquatic physical therapy exercises were more effective in improving balance, gait, quality of life and reducing fear of falling in CDOAs. The meta-analysis showed that engaging in aquatic physical therapy exercises increases the functional reach, through of the anterior displacement of the center of pressure of CDOAs by 6.36cm, compared to land-based physical therapy exercises, assessed by the Functional Reach test: [CI:5.22 to 7.50], (p<0.00001), presenting low quality evidence. CONCLUSIONS Aquatic physical therapy exercises are more effective than their land-based counterparts in enhancing balance, gait, quality of life and reducing the fear of falling in CDOAs. However, due to methodological limitations of the trials, this clinical decision remains inconclusive. It is suggested that new trials be conducted with greater methodological rigor, in order to provide high-quality evidence on the use of the aquatic physical therapy exercises to improve the outcomes analyzed in CDOAs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although several studies have been conducted to assess the association between hearing loss (HL) and trauma, no studies have analyzed trauma comprehensively based on population-based data. OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between HL and trauma in daily life using National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort data of Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS People who were registered with severe or mild hearing disability by the Korean government from 2002 to 2015, were included in this study. Trauma was defined as an outpatient visit or admission under diagnostic codes associated with trauma. The risk for trauma was analyzed using multiple logistic regression model. RESULTS There were 5,114 subjects in the mild hearing disability group and 1,452 in the severe hearing disability group. The risk for trauma was significantly higher in the mild and severe hearing disability groups than in the control group. The risk was higher in the mild hearing disability group than in the severe hearing disability group. CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE Individuals with hearing disability are at a higher risk for trauma based on population-based data in Korea, which indicates that HL increases the risk for trauma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The most common preventative measure against mumps is vaccination with mumps vaccine. Over 122 countries have implemented mumps vaccine routine immunization programs, mostly via Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. In Japan, the unexpectedly high incidence of aseptic meningitis caused by mumps vaccine led to the discontinuation of the MMR national vaccination program in 1993, inadvertently resulting in the re-emergence of mumps. Plans of introducing monovalent mumps vaccine into routine vaccination schedule have become one of the emerging topics in health policy that has warranted the need in evaluating its value for money. METHODS We conducted cost-effectiveness analyses with Markov model and calculated incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) of two different vaccination programs (a single-dose program at one-year-old, a two-dose program with second dose uptakes at five) compared to status quo from both payers' and societal perspectives. Transition probabilities and utility weights in estimating quality-adjusted life-year (QALY), and disease treatment costs were either estimated or obtained from literature. Costs per vaccination were assumed at ¥6140 (US$58;1US$ = ¥106). RESULTS Both programs reduce disease treatment costs compared to status quo, while the reduction cannot offset vaccination cost. ICER of either program is found to be under ¥5,000,000 (US$47,170)/QALY willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold from either perspective. Results of probabilistic sensitivity analyses expressed by net monetary benefit indicated that at the WTP threshold, the acceptability is at 92.6% for two-dose vaccination program, 0% for single-dose vaccination program, and 7.4% for current no vaccination program. Two-dose program was optimal among the alternatives. One-way sensitivity analyses revealed that proportion of mumps-related hearing loss among mumps cases and vaccine effectiveness (VE) were key variables in changing the ICERs. CONCLUSION Routine vaccination program of single- and two-dose programs were cost-effective from both payers' and societal perspectives. Between the two, the two-dose vaccination program was observed to be more favorable.

Abstract
Background The potential of auditory feedback for motor learning in the rehabilitation of various diseases has become apparent in recent years. However, since the volume of auditory feedback has played a minor role so far and its influence has hardly been considered, we investigate the volume effect of auditory feedback on gait pattern and gait direction and its interaction with pitch. Methods Thirty-two healthy young participants were randomly divided into two groups: Group 1 (n = 16) received a high pitch (150-250 Hz) auditory feedback; group 2 (n = 16) received a lower pitch (95-112 Hz) auditory feedback. The feedback consisted of a real-time sonification of the right and left foot ground contact. After an initial condition (no auditory feedback and full vision), both groups realized a 30-minute habituation period followed by a 30-minute asymmetry period. At any condition, the participants were asked to walk blindfolded and with auditory feedback towards a target at 15 m distance and were stopped 5 m before the target. Three different volume conditions were applied in random order during the habituation period: loud, normal, and quiet. In the subsequent asymmetry period, the three volume conditions baseline, right quiet and left quiet were applied in random order. Results In the habituation phase, the step width from the loud to the quiet condition showed a significant interaction of volume*pitch with a decrease at high pitch (group 1) and an increase at lower pitch (group 2) (group 1: loud 1.02 ± 0.310, quiet 0.98 ± 0.301; group 2: loud 0.95 ± 0.229, quiet 1.11 ± 0.298). In the asymmetry period, a significantly increased ground contact time on the side with reduced volume could be found (right quiet: left foot 0.988 ± 0.033, right foot 1.003 ± 0.040, left quiet: left foot 1.004 ± 0.036, right foot 1.002 ± 0.033). Conclusions Our results suggest that modifying the volume of auditory feedback can be an effective way to improve gait symmetry. This could facilitate gait therapy and rehabilitation of hemiparetic and arthroplasty patients, in particular if gait improvement based on verbal corrections and conscious motor control is limited.
