Abstract
INTRODUCTION Several studies have described increased oxidative stress parameters in patients with schizophrenia. The objectives of the current study were to identify potential oxidative stress biomarkers in stable patients during first 10 years of schizophrenia and determine if they are associated with specific clinical dimensions. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventy-three clinically stable outpatients with schizophrenia and 73 sex and age-matched healthy controls were recruited. Sociodemographic, clinical and biological data were collected at enrollment. Blood biomarkers included homocysteine, the percentage of hemolysis, lipid peroxidation subproducts, and as an antioxidant biomarker, catalase activity in erythrocytes. RESULTS Comparative analyses after controlling for smoking and metabolic syndrome evidenced a significant increase in catalase activity in patients. Also, lower lipid peroxidation levels showed an association with negative symptoms. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, compensatory antioxidant mechanisms might be increased in stable patients with schizophrenia at early stages. Furthermore, there may be an inverse relationship between oxidative stress and negative dimension.

Abstract
Erythrocytes are the most numerous cells in human body and their function of oxygen transport is pivotal to human physiology. However, being enucleated, they are often referred to as a sac of molecules and their cellularity is challenged. Interestingly, their programmed death stands a testimony to their cell-hood. They are capable of self-execution after a defined life span by both cell-specific mechanism and that resembling the cytoplasmic events in apoptosis of nucleated cells. Since the execution process lacks the nuclear and mitochondrial events in apoptosis, it has been referred to as quasi-apoptosis or eryptosis. Several studies on molecular mechanisms underlying death of erythrocytes have been reported. The data has generated a non-cohesive sketch of the process. The lacunae in the present knowledge need to be filled to gain deeper insight into the mechanism of physiological ageing and death of erythrocytes, as well as the effect of age of organism on RBCs survival. This would entail how the most numerous cells in the human body die and enable a better understanding of signaling mechanisms of their senescence and premature eryptosis observed in individuals of advanced age.

Abstract
PURPOSE Physical exercise or hypoxic exposure influences hemorheology and acid-base homeostasis. Band 3 protein in erythrocytes modulates cells' rheological properties and anion transport ability. This study investigated how cycling aerobic interval training (AIT) and moderate continuous training (MCT) affect the rheological function and band 3 activity of erythrocytes under hypoxic exercise (HE) stress. METHODS Forty-five healthy sedentary men were randomized to engage in either AIT (3-min intervals at 40% and 80% of VO2max, n = 15) or MCT (sustained 60% of VO2max, n = 15) on a bicycle ergometer for 30 min · d(-1) (5 d · wk(-1) for 5 wk) or to a control group that did not perform any exercise (n = 15). Erythrocyte rheological responses to HE (100 W under 12% O2 for 30 min) were determined before and after various regimens. RESULTS Acute HE increased the aggregation and osmotic fragility of erythrocytes, decreased the deformability of erythrocytes, and depressed erythrocyte band 3 activity, as indicated by lowered anion transport ability. Following 5 wk of intervention, the AIT group exhibited maximal work rate and VO2max higher than those in the MCT and control groups. Moreover, cycling AIT and MCT diminished the extent of erythrocytes' enhanced aggregation and osmotic fragility and reduced their deformability and band 3 activity caused by HE. Additionally, erythrocyte band 3 activity was directly related to erythrocyte deformability and inversely related to erythrocyte aggregation and osmotic fragility. CONCLUSIONS Cycling AIT is superior to cycling MCT in enhancing aerobic capacity. Moreover, either cycling AIT or MCT effectively alleviates HE-evoked impairments of erythrocyte rheological characteristics and band 3 function.

Abstract
Herein we considered the role of oxidative stress on deficiencies of functional physical performance that could affect a future pre-frailty condition. Using principal component analyses (PCA), we created new variables to better describe the functionality regarding the physical performance of the upper and lower body limbs. Gait speed and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score were classified by PCA to describe functional performance of the lower body limbs. Variables describing the general physical status, including weekly consumption of kilocalories and the musculoskeletal index, were classified together with grip strength of the dominant hand as indicators of functional performance of the upper body limbs. An intimate association between the functional physical performance of the upper body limbs and the total antioxidant capacity was observed in older subjects. Low levels of total antioxidant capacity were found in women 76 years or younger with deficiencies in the physical performance of both upper and lower body limbs. Similarly, we observed a close association between the functional physical performance of the lower body limbs and the levels of hemoglobin. In particular, low levels of hemoglobin were mostly found in men older than 76 years of age, showing impaired functional physical performance. In addition, the physical performance of the lower body limbs was shown to be more important than that of the upper body limbs in the statistical association with pre-frailty in the elderly. Therefore, specific low levels of hemoglobin and deficient oxidative defense in the elderly could significantly affect the functional physical performance and future outcomes of pre-frailty.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hypoxia is known to induce the release of microparticles in vitro. However, few publications have addressed the role of hypoxia in vivo on circulating levels of microparticles. This randomised, controlled, crossover trial aimed to determine the effect of mild hypoxia on in vivo levels of circulating microparticles in healthy individuals. METHODS Blood was obtained from 51 healthy male volunteers (mean age of 26.9 years) at baseline altitude (490 m) and after 24 and 48 h at moderate altitude (2,590 m). The order of altitude exposure was randomised. Flow cytometry was used to assess platelet-poor plasma for levels of circulating microparticles derived from platelets, endothelial cells, leucocytes, granulocytes, monocytes, red blood cells and procoagulant microparticles. RESULTS Mean (standard deviation) oxygen saturation was significantly lower on the first and second day after arrival at 2,590 m, 91.0 (2.0) and 92.0 (2.0) %, respectively, compared to 490 m, 96 (1.0) %, p < 0.001 for both comparisons. A significant decrease in the levels of procoagulant microparticles (annexin V+ -221/μl 95 % CI -370.8/-119.0, lactadherin+ -202/μl 95 % CI -372.2/-93.1), platelet-derived microparticles (-114/μl 95 % CI -189.9/-51.0) and red blood cell-derived microparticles (-81.4 μl 95 % CI -109.9/-57.7) after 48 h at moderate altitude was found. Microparticles derived from endothelial cells, granulocytes, monocytes and leucocytes were not significantly altered by exposure to moderate altitude. CONCLUSIONS In healthy male individuals, mild hypobaric hypoxia, induced by a short-term stay at moderate altitude, is associated with lower levels of procoagulant microparticles, platelet-derived microparticles and red blood cell-derived microparticles, suggesting a reduction in thrombotic potential.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to investigate a large panel of oxidative stress biomarkers in long-term trained elderly men to analyse the effects of chronic training on an aged population. We collected blood samples from two groups of male volunteers older than 65 years who maintain a measure of functional independence: one group of sedentary subjects without a history of regular physical activity and the other of subjects who have sustained training, starting during middle age (mean training time=49 ± 8 years). We studied morbidity and polypharmacy, as well as haematological parameters including red cell count, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, red cell distribution width and several oxidative biomarkers including protein carbonyl content and lipid peroxidation in plasma and erythrocytes, red blood cell H2O2-induced haemolysis test, plasma total antioxidant activity and the main antioxidant enzymes of erythrocytes: superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione-S-transferase. After adjusting for confounding factors, we observed an increase in all oxidative damage biomarkers in the plasma and erythrocytes of the long-term exercise group. However, we reported a decrease in the number of diseases per subject with statistical differences nearly significant (p=0.061), reduced intake of medications per subject and lower levels of red cell distribution width in the chronic exercise group. These results indicate that chronic exercise from middle age to old age increases oxidative damage; however, chronic exercise appears to be an effective strategy to attenuate the age-related decline in the elderly.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to investigate the changes in a large panel of emergent geriatric biomarkers in long-term trained elderly men to analyze the effects of long-term exercise on an aged population. We collected blood samples from two groups of male volunteers older than 65 years who maintain a measure of functional independence: one group of sedentary subjects without a history of regular physical activity and the other of subjects who have sustained training, starting during adulthood (mean training time = 49 ± 8 years). We studied morbidity, polypharmacy, cellular and serological inflammatory parameters, and endocrine mediators. After adjusting for confounding factors, we observed reduced medication intake per subject and lower number of diseases per subject with statistical differences nearly significant in the long-term exercise group. We showed that long-term training was associated with lower levels of white blood cell counts, neutrophil counts, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, and soluble TNF receptor-I. Furthermore, we noted an increase in the concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-1 and dehydroepiandrosterone in the long-term training group. We concluded that long-term exercise training from adulthood to old age is clearly associated with a healthy profile of emergent geriatric biomarkers. Long-term training could improve the inflammatory-endocrine imbalance associated with disease, frailty, functional decline, and mortality in elderly men. Our results point to the benefits of prolonged exercise from adulthood to old age.
