Promoting Late-Life Volunteering With Timebanking: A Quasi-Experimental Mixed-Methods Study in Hong Kong

Background and Objectives

This study explores the impact of timebanking, where individuals earn time credits, nonmonetary currency, on promoting volunteerism among older adults.

Research Design and Methods

This study employed a quasi-experimental design with 116 timebank group (TBG) participants and 114 comparison group (CG) participants from 2021 to 2022. TBG received time credits to exchange for rewards, while CG received no time credits (i.e., volunteering as usual). The intervention of timebanking lasted for 1 year. Volunteering behaviors were tracked via an app, and intentions to volunteer were assessed at baseline (T0), after 6 months (the midpoint of the intervention, T1), and after 12 months (the endpoint of the intervention, T2). The use of rewards by TBG participants was also recorded (e.g., for personal use or sharing with others). Furthermore, focus group interviews were conducted to understand how rewards influenced participants' volunteerism.

Results

TBG had significantly higher weekly volunteer hours at T2 (β = 1.37, p = .021) and increased intent to volunteer at T1 (β = 0.54, p = .001) and T2 (β = 0.51, p = .001) compared with CG. Participants using rewards personally volunteered more at T2 (β = 2.09, p = .014), although sharing rewards with family and friends or donating rewards to others did not yield the same effect. The qualitative study suggested that a sense of feeling recognized generated by timebanking may encourage increased volunteering and that personal reward use enriched the volunteer experience, and individuals sharing rewards with family and friends experienced a sense of fulfillment and reinforcement of their prosociality.

Discussion and Implications

Timebanking effectively encourages late-life volunteering. The study provides practical implications for promoting volunteering among older people.

Development and Evaluation of Neighborhood Care Volunteer Training Programs-Preparing for Older Adult Community Care in Taiwan

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of chronic diseases and functional disorders is projected to escalate as the older adult population increases. Thus, the demand for and burdens of long-term care are increasing. Training middle-aged and older volunteers at the community level will enhance health promotion and disease prevention in communities.

PURPOSE

In this study, multilevel volunteer training programs and related implementation methods were designed for neighborhood caregivers.

METHODS

This study was divided into two phases. In Phase 1, an expert review was conducted using the modified Delphi method to congregate expert opinions into an interdisciplinary consensus and establish the content and methods of implementation of the multilevel training program. In Phase 2, the training programs were implemented and evaluated.

RESULTS

In Phase 1, 17 experts in geriatric and long-term care were enrolled in the Delphi surveys. Consensus was defined as at least 80% agreement. These experts devised volunteer training programs for neighborhood caregivers at three levels: basic caregiver training, advanced caregiver training, and volunteer caregiver instructor training. The curriculum focused on fulfilling the health demands of neighborhood care; adopted disability-prevention and disability-delaying healthcare as the basic framework; and referred to the attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction model of motivational design. This model of motivational design drew on the attributes of volunteers and the current state of care programs, including interest, program difficulty, and feasibility of future services. In Phase 2, 50 community middle-aged and older volunteers enrolled in the training programs and, after completing the program, were asked to evaluate their satisfaction with the program content and program effectiveness. A high level of satisfaction was reported across all three levels.

CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

The training programs achieved satisfactory consistency and convergence and were well received by the volunteer trainees. These programs may be referenced in the development of future training programs and the creation of a model of community healthcare services. The curriculum was designed from the learners' perspective with direct healthcare applications. A progressive multilevel set of neighborhood care volunteer training programs was offered to cultivate community volunteers.

Social responsibility and subjective well-being of volunteers for COVID-19: The mediating role of job involvement

Aim

Our study aimed to investigate the effect of social responsibility on the subjective well-being of volunteers for COVID-19 and to examine the mediating role of job involvement in this relationship.

Background

Nowadays, more and more people join volunteer service activities. As we all know, volunteer work contributes to society without any return. Volunteers often have a strong sense of social responsibility and reap subjective well-being in their dedication. Although research shows that social responsibility will drive them to participate in volunteer work actively, it is less clear whether job involvement will impact their subjective well-being.

Methods

The data were collected in the precaution zone in Shanghai, China, from April to May 2022. A sample of 302 volunteers for COVID-19 completed the social responsibility scale, subjective well-being scale and job involvement scale in the form of an electronic questionnaire on their mobile phones. A structural equation model was adopted to verify the research hypotheses.

Results

Social responsibility was significantly and positively related to volunteers’ subjective well-being and job involvement (p < 0.05). Job involvement fully mediates the relationship between volunteers’ social responsibility and subjective well-being.

Conclusion

Social responsibility is critical to predicting volunteers’ subjective well-being. Job involvement plays an intervening mechanism in explaining how social responsibility promotes volunteers’ subjective well-being.

Comparative Study on Volunteering among Older Korean Immigrants in the United States and Older Koreans in South Korea

This study aimed to determine the most important factors that influence the prevalence of volunteering among older Koreans in the United States and in Korea and to identify sociodemographic resources, cultural resources, and social resources that are correlated with volunteering. The data were gathered from older Koreans aged 60 or over from the two countries (n = 480). The prevalence of volunteering was 23.3% for older Korean immigrants in the United States versus 14.7% for the older Koreans in Korea. This study found that there was a significant relationship between human capital (individual resources) and volunteering in both countries. Education and financial status had a positive relationship with volunteering among older Koreans in both countries. Cultural resources and social resources were the only important predictors of volunteering among older Korean immigrants in the United States. Regarding types of volunteering, older Koreans in both countries were more likely to participate in informal volunteering than formal volunteering. These findings differ somewhat from those reported by previous studies. This study was the first attempt to examine older adults from these two countries with a focus on the correlation between cultural factors, social resources, and volunteering.

Benefits of volunteering on psychological well-being in older adulthood: evidence from a randomized controlled trial

Objectives: Long-term volunteering has been associated with better physical, mental, and cognitive health in correlational studies. Few studies, however, have examined the longitudinal benefits of volunteering with randomized experimental designs (e.g., intervention studies). Even fewer studies have examined whether such benefits can be shown after short-term volunteering. To fill this gap, we conducted four 1-hour volunteering intervention sessions to promote volunteering among a group of older adults with limited volunteering experience and examined the impact of volunteering on depressive symptoms, meaning in life, general self-efficacy, and perceived autonomy.Methods: A total of 384 participants aged 50-96 years were assigned at random to either an intervention group to promote volunteering behaviors or an active control group to promote physical activity. The participants' monthly volunteering minutes, depressive symptoms, meaning in life, general self-efficacy and perceived autonomy were measured at baseline and six weeks, three months, and six months after the intervention.Results: Being in the volunteering intervention condition was not directly associated with depressive symptoms, meaning in life, general self-efficacy, or perceived autonomy at the 6-week, 3-month, or 6-month follow-ups after the intervention. However, there was an indirect effect of the intervention on depressive symptoms: participants in the intervention group, who had increased their volunteering at the 3-month follow-up, reported fewer depressive symptoms at the 6-month follow-up.Discussion: Our randomized controlled trial suggests that short-term volunteering does not reliably lead to short-term changes in psychosocial health measures as correlational studies would suggest. Efforts need to be made to encourage older adults to maintain long-term volunteering.
