Are Interventions for Formal Caregivers Effective for Improving Dementia Care? A Systematic Review of Systematic Reviews

Factors Influencing Dementia Care Competence among Care Staff: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review Protocol

BACKGROUND

Dementia care competence is defined as the ability, acquired through practical experience, to deliver high-quality care services to persons with dementia (PWD). However, many studies only focus on one aspect of competence using qualitative or quantitative research design and have small sample sizes of care staff with dementia. This study aims to conduct a mixed-methods systematic review of the factors influencing the competence of dementia care staff, and explore the relationship between these factors and competence.

METHODS

This review was designed following the PRISMA-P 2015 statement and methodological guidance for the conduct of mixed-methods systematic reviews from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Seven English and four Chinese databases will be searched to systematically review the existing eligible studies. JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research and Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies will be used to assess the methodological quality of each study. A JBI Mixed-Methods Data Extraction Form will be applied for data extraction. The JBI convergent integrated approach will be used for data synthesis and integration. The synthesized findings will be graded according to the JBI ConQual approach as high, moderate, low, or very low. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO in October 2023 (CRD42023474093).

Emotion-focused communication training online: Development and evaluation of acceptability

Emotion-focused communication can improve the delivery of care for long-term care recipients, especially individuals' living with dementia. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the process of translating the Emotion-Focused Communication Training (EFCT) for long-term care staff from an in-person workshop to an online program and evaluate its acceptability and impact on knowledge of emotion-focused communication and perceived self-efficacy for utilizing emotion-focused communication. The online course was developed following the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) Model. The program teaches participants to better identify and manage their own emotions and others' emotions in care. Pre- and post-training t-test comparisons on data collected from 247 caregivers across disciplines in long-term care (direct care workers, life-enrichment/activities staff, health care providers, case managers, health educators, students, administrators, ombudsmen, dietary, housekeeping, or maintenance staff, human resources employees, family care partners, and others) indicated a significant increase in level of knowledge of emotion-focused communication and confidence in applying the learned knowledge and skills in care (increased self-efficacy). Participants also reported high levels of program acceptability. Overall, findings indicate the benefits of translating an in-person training opportunity for caregivers into an interactive online experience; implications for caregivers and care recipients are discussed.

District nurses' attitudes towards involuntary treatment in dementia care at home: A cross-sectional study

One in two persons living with dementia (PLWD) at home receive care which they resist to and/or have not given consent to, defined as involuntary treatment. District nurses play a key role in the use of involuntary treatment. However, little is known how their attitudes and opinions influence the use of involuntary treatment. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the attitudes of district nurses towards the use of involuntary treatment in dementia care at home, determinants and their opinion about its restrictiveness and discomfort. Results show that district nurses perceive involuntary treatment as regular part of nursing care, having neither positive nor negative attitude towards its appropriateness. They consider involuntary treatment usage as moderately restrictive to PLWD and feel moderately uncomfortable when using it. These findings underscore the need to increase the awareness of district nurses regarding the negative consequences of involuntary treatment use to PLWD at home.
