Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Disparities exist in the populations that acquire TBIs, however, with a greater burden and poorer outcomes associated with communities of color and lower socioeconomic status. To combat health inequities such as these, institutions have begun to target social determinants of health (SDoH), which are environmental factors that affect health outcomes and risks. The SDoH may play a role in sustaining a TBI and provide modifiable targets for action to reduce the risk of TBI, especially in high-risk communities. In this study, we describe the existing literature regarding SDoH and their association with sustaining a TBI. We performed a scoping review with a comprehensive search of the Ovid MEDLINE/Embase databases. To summarize the literature, this review adapts the World Health Organization's Commission on SDoH's conceptual framework. Fifty-nine full-text articles, including five focusing on lower and middle-income countries, met our study criteria. Results of the scoping review indicate that several structural determinants of health were associated with TBI risk. Lower educational attainment and income levels were associated with higher odds of TBI. In addition, multiple studies highlight that minority populations were identified as having higher odds of TBI than their White counterparts. Literature highlighting intermediate determinants of health examined in this review describes associations between sustaining a TBI and rurality, work environment, medical conditions, medication/substance use, and adversity. Recommended exploration into lesser-researched SDoH is discussed, and the expansion of this review to other aspects of the TBI continuum is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health disorders are a common sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and are associated with worse health outcomes including increased mental health care utilization. The objective of this study was to determine the association between TBI and use of mental health services in a population-based sample. METHODS Using data from a national Canadian survey, this study evaluated the association between TBI and mental health care utilization, while adjusting for confounding variables. A log-Poisson regression model was used to estimate unadjusted and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS The study sample included 158,287 TBI patients and 25,339,913 non-injured individuals. Compared with those were not injured, TBI patients reported higher proportions of chronic mental health conditions (27% vs. 12%, p < 0.001) and heavy drinking (33% vs. 24%, p = 0.005). The adjusted prevalence of mental health care utilization was 60% higher in patients with TBI than those who were not injured (PR = 1.60, 95%; CI 1.05-2.43). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that chronic mental health conditions and heavy drinking are more common in individuals with TBI. The prevalence of mental health care utilization is 60% higher in TBI patients compared with those who are not injured after adjusting for sociodemographic factors, mental health conditions, and heavy drinking. Future longitudinal research is required to examine the temporality and direction of the association between TBI and the use of mental health services.

Abstract
Co-occurring traumatic brain injury (TBI) and substance use disorders (SUD) are a major public health concern, yet TBI is often underrecognized within SUD treatment organizations. Social workers in these organizations are well positioned to deliver tailored treatment, but little is known about what social workers are doing to address the needs of these clients. The purpose of this study was to examine current social work practices in providing care to clients with co-occurring TBI and SUD. Using grounded theory methodology, authors conducted semistructured interviews with 17 licensed social workers employed in various SUD treatment settings. Transcript coding was conducted through an iterative process and data were analyzed using NVivo (version 12.0). Results demonstrated that social workers lack basic knowledge on the relationship between TBI and SUD. Additional barriers to providing care included lack of skills to identify history of TBI, lack of community resources, poor agency collaboration, and access-to-care restrictions. Social workers identified their primary roles as advocacy, care coordination, and serving on multidisciplinary teams. These results informed development of a capacity-building model, with recommendations for social work situated in each level of the socioecological framework. This study has important implications for building workforce capacity and collaborative care systems to improve client outcomes.
