Abstract
Coronary heart disease and aortic stenosis are prevalent cardiovascular diseases worldwide, leading to morbidity and mortality. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) have therapeutic benefits, including improved postoperative quality of life (QoL) and enhanced patient functional capacity which are key indicators of cardiac surgery outcome. In this article, we review the latest studies of QoL outcomes and functional capacity in patients who underwent cardiac surgery. Many standardized instruments are used to evaluate QoL and functional conditions. Preoperative health status, age, length of intensive care unit stay, operative risk, type of procedure, and other pre-, intra-, and postoperative factors affect postoperative QoL. Elderly patients experience impaired physical status soon after cardiac surgery, but it improves in the following period. CABG and SAVR are associated with increases of physical and mental health and functional capacity in the immediate postoperative and the long long-term. Cardiac rehabilitation improves patient functional capacity, QoL, and frailty following cardiac surgery.

Abstract
Introduction Chronic depression and anxiety can be a risk factor for coronary aArtery bypass grafting (CABG) and is an emerging factor after coronary artery disease when the patient is admitted to the hospital and after surgery. We aimed to assess the effect of Escitalopram in treating mild to moderate depressive disorder and improving the quality of life in patients undergoing CABG. Methods In this randomized clinical trial, 50 patients undergoing CABG referred to Tehran Heart Hospital from January 2021 to May 2021 and were suffering from mild to moderate depression were randomly assigned to one of the two groups of Escitalopram or placebo. The level of depression was assessed based on Beck's depression inventory and the quality-of-life status and its domains were assessed based on the SF-36 questionnaire in 2 groups. Measurements were obtained at baseline and at four and eight weeks after treatment. Chi-square, Fisher's exact, paired, and Wilcoxon tests or ANOVA were used as appropriate. Results There was no significant difference between the level of depression between the two study groups at baseline (P=0.312). There was no significant difference between the quality of life and its domains in the two study groups at baseline (P=0.607). However, the most important effect of Escitalopram was reducing depression scores in the intervention group at weeks 4 and 8 after treatment compared to the placebo group (P<0.001). The quality of life and its domains were significantly higher in the Escitalopram group eight weeks after treatment (P=0.004). The amount of drug side effects at 2 and 4 weeks after treatment had no significant difference between the groups (P>0.05). Conclusion Escitalopram was effective in treating mild to moderate depressive disorder and improving quality of life in patients undergoing CABG. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to detect changes in QoL after coronary artery bypass grafting surgeries (CABG) in one year, and to identify the possible predictive factors associated with the change. DESIGN A single-center prospective study of 501 patients was conducted between 2013 and 2018 using the EQ-5D VAS questionnaire for estimating the QoL. The patients filled in a questionnaire preoperatively, at 6 and at 12 months postoperatively. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to find out if certain pre-selected factors or EQ5D dimensions had independent effects on the observed EQ VAS scores. RESULTS QoL improved in all EQ-5D dimensions and in EQ VAS scores at 6 and at 12 months: the greatest changes in the number of reported problems were in the dimensions "mobility" (-34.2%, p<.001), "self-care" (-36.7%, p=.001) and "pain or discomfort" (-31.0%, p<.001). With the multivariable regression model, we could show that normal left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) and improvement in mobility and pain/discomfort dimensions were in association with improvement of EQ VAS score at 6 months. At 12 months this association was no longer detectable. CONCLUSIONS CABG procedure can improve patient's QoL when judged with EQ5D dimensions and related overall self-rated health (VAS). This improvement was seen both at 6 and at 12 months postoperatively. Except for LVEF, the other patient-specific risk factors we examined did not seem to affect QoL in the long term.

Abstract
Objectives. Readmission rates following open cardiac surgery are high, affecting patients and the cost of care. This study aimed to investigate the effect of early additional follow-up after open cardiac surgery when 5th-year medical students conducted follow-ups under the supervision of physicians. The primary endpoint was unplanned cardiac-related readmissions within one year. The secondary outcomes were the detection of impending complications and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Methods. Patients undergoing open cardiac surgery were prospectively included. For intervention, additional follow-up visits, including point-of-care ultrasound, were conducted by supervised 5th-year medical students on postoperative days 3, 14 and 25. Unplanned cardiac-related readmissions, including emergency department visits, were registered within the first year of surgery. Danish National Health Survey 2010 questionnaire was used for HRQOL. In standard follow-up, all patients were seen 4-6 weeks postoperative. Results. For data analysis, 100 of 124 patients in the intervention group and 319 of 335 patients in the control group were included. The 1-year unplanned readmission rates did not differ; 32% and 30% in the intervention and control groups, respectively (p = 0.71). After discharge, 1% of patients underwent pericardiocentesis. The additional follow-up initiated scheduled drainage, contrary to more unscheduled/acute drainages in the control group. Pleurocentesis was more common in the intervention group (17% (n = 17) vs 8% (n = 25), p = 0.01) and performed earlier. There was no difference between groups on HRQOL. Conclusion. Supervised student-led follow-up of newly cardiac-operated patients did not alter readmission rates or HRQOL but may detect complications earlier and initiate non-emergent treatment of complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is an intervention directed toward improving the Quality of Life (QoL) for patients with coronary artery disease. Depression can affect QoL negatively among this population. Perceived control (PC) decreased the effect of anxiety on QoL, however, this effect has not been well-studies regarding depression. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to check the effect of depression on QoL among CABG patients and to determine if preoperative PC moderates this effect. METHODS This was a prospective observational cohort study conducted on a consecutive sample of 200 patients from three hospitals in Amman, Jordan. Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale, Short-Form Health Survey-36, and Arabic version of the Control Attitude Scale-Revised were used to measure depressive symptoms, QoL and PC respectively. Data were analyzed using t test and step wise multiple regression followed by simple slope analysis. RESULTS Postoperative Physical Component Summary (PCS) was better than preoperative PCS (mean ± SD: 38.2 ± 9.4 vs. 36.6 ± 9.5, P < 0.001). Postoperative Mental Component Summary (MCS) was better than preoperative MCS (mean ± SD: 44.3 ± 11.5 vs. 41.4 ± 11.4, P < 0.001). Preoperative depression was higher than postoperative depression; (mean ± SD: 12.8 ± 6.8 vs.11.1 ± 6.7, P < 0.01). Simple slope analysis was significant (simple slope = 0.41, t = 6.1, P < 0.001), indicating the moderating effect of PC. CONCLUSION Patients undergoing CABG surgery had poor QoL and high levels of depression. Perceived control moderated this relationship and improve QoL. Assessing depression levels and implantation of interventions to enhance perceived control levels prior to operation might improve QoL.

Abstract
MiRNAs are noncoding, 21-24 nucleotide-long RNA particles that control over 60% of genes. MiRNAs affect gene expression through binding to the 3'-untranslated region of messenger RNA (mRNA), thus inhibiting mRNA translation or inducing mRNA degradation. MiRNAs have been associated with various cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, or ischemic heart disease. In addition, miRNA expression alters during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery, which could be used to predict perioperative outcomes. CABG is an operation in which complex coronary arteries stenosis is treated by bypassing atherosclerotic lesions with venous or arterial grafts. Despite a very low perioperative mortality rate and excellent long-term survival, CABG is associated with postoperative complications, including reperfusion injury, graft failure, atrial fibrillation and perioperative myocardial infarction. So far, no reliable diagnostic and prognostic tools to predict prognosis after CABG have been developed. Changes in the perioperative miRNA expression levels could improve the diagnosis of post-CABG myocardial infarction and atrial fibrillation and could be used to stratify risk after CABG. Herein, we describe the expression changes of different subtypes of miRNAs during CABG and review the diagnostic and prognostic utility of miRNAs in patients undergoing CABG.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), the use of fractional flow reserve (FFR) is insufficiently investigated. Stenosis assessment usually relies on visual estimates of lesion severity. This study evaluated health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and angina after FFR- versus angiography-guided CABG. METHODS One hundred patients referred for CABG were randomized to FFR- or angiography-guided CABG. In the FFR group, lesions with FFR>0.80 were deferred, while the surgeon was blinded to the FFR values in the angiography group. Before and 6 months after CABG, HRQoL was assessed by the health state classifier EQ-5D of the EuroQoL 5-level instrument and angina status based on the Canadian Cardiovascular Society classification system were registered. RESULTS Six-month angiography included FFR evaluations of deferred lesions. In total, completed EQ-5D of the EuroQoL 5-level instrument questionnaires were available in 86 patients (43 in the FFR versus 43 in the angiography-guided group). HRQoL was significantly improved and angina significantly decreased from baseline to 6 months after CABG with no difference between the randomization groups. Graft failure rates and clinical outcomes were similar in both groups. Patients with graft failure or FFR<0.80 of the previous deferred lesions had significantly lower visual analogue scale scores (78.7±14.2 versus 86.8±14.7, P=0.004) and more angina compared with patients without graft failure or FFR≥0.80 at 6-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS FFR- versus angiography-guided CABG demonstrated similar improvements in HRQoL and angina 6 months after CABG. Predictors and Outcomes of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A Systematic and Untargeted Analysis of More Than 120,000 Individuals and 1,300 Disease Traits. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To perform an untargeted data-driven analysis on the correlates and outcomes of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). DESIGN FinnGen cohort study. SETTING The authors collected information on up to 1,327 disease traits before and after CABG from nationwide healthcare registers. PARTICIPANTS A mixed population and patient sample of 127,911 individuals including 3,784 CABG patients. INTERVENTIONS The authors assessed the association between (1) traits and incident CABG and (2) CABG and incident traits using multivariate-adjusted Cox models. MAIN RESULTS Patients who underwent CABG and were in the fourth quartile of a risk score based on the top predictors of mortality had 12.2-fold increased risk of dying (95% confidence interval [CI], 10.3-14.5) compared with those in the first quartile. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD risk factors were most strongly associated with incident CABG. However, CABG was associated with death due to cardiac causes (hazard ratio [HR], 3.7; 95% CI, 3.5-4.0) or other causes (HR, 2.5; 95% CI, 2.4-2.7). CABG also was related to increased risk of several non-CVD traits, including anemia (HR, 3.4; 95% CI, 2.8-4.1), gastrointestinal disorders (HR, 2.2; 95% CI, 1.8-2.6), acute renal failure (HR, 4.2; 95% CI, 3.5-5.1), septicemia (HR, 3.6; 95% CI, 3.1-4.1), lung cancer (HR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.9-2.8), Alzheimer's disease (HR, 2.5; 95% CI, 2.2-2.7), and chronic obstuctive pulmonary disease (HR, 2.5; 95% CI, 2.2-2.9). CONCLUSIONS Known CVD risk factors associate most strongly with incident CABG. However, CABG is associated with increased risk of several, somewhat unexpected, non-CVD traits. More detailed study of these links is warranted to establish potential causality and pathogenesis.

Abstract
Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, although rare, continue to be associated with high morbidity and mortality in the modern era of vascular surgery, and knowledge of this disease is essential for those in clinical practice. Given the clinically silent nature of the disease, it is difficult to determine disease incidence, with most epidemiologic recommendations not made based on evidence regarding those diagnosed with the disease, but extrapolated from data on surgical outcomes. It appears that although men are more likely to develop thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, the distribution is not as skewed as in abdominal aortic aneurysms. Current evidence suggests that Black and Hispanic patients continue to have disproportionately poor disease outcomes, mostly attributed to later presentation and undergoing interventions at lower-volume centers. Although select patients meet criteria for disease screening based on personal or family history of aneurysmal disease, general population screening has not been recommended by any professional organization to date. Vascular surgeons need to continue to be at the forefront of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm management, especially as care becomes centered around comprehensive "aortic care centers" and as more endovascular therapies become available.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies show that substantial percentage of patients experienced worsening of health related quality of life (HRQoL) 1 year after cardiac surgery. The aim of this study is to identify risk factors that interfere with improvement of HRQoL. METHODS From December 2015 till July 2017 a prospective single centre observational study was carried out in 1920 patients participated who underwent non-salvage cardiac surgery. All patients were requested to complete a Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire before and 1 year after surgery. Primary aim of the study was to identify risk factors for non-recovery in the physical domain of the SF-36 in all cardiac surgery patients. Secondary aim was to identify identical risk factors in patients with isolated coronary artery bypass grafting. RESULTS After cardiac surgery, the questionnaires for physical and mental health were completed by respectively 803 and 807 patients. Median age was 69[62-75] years, and 77% was male. In comparison to the preoperative status, 176 patients (21.9%) did not display an improvement in the SF-36 physical domain score 1 year after cardiac surgery. In a multivariate analysis independent risk factors for non-recovery in the SF-36 physical domain were baseline SF36 physical domain score (OR 0.954[0.942-0.965], P < 0.001), diabetes (OR 0.437 [0.265-0.720], P 0.001), female sex (OR 0.492 [0.307-0.789], P 0.003), post-operative infection (OR 0.240 [0.109-0.525], P < 0.001) and PCI within 1 year (OR 0.113 [0.036-0.349], P < 0.001) For isolated CABG, 23.2% of patients did not display an improvement in the physical domain score and risk factors appeared to be identical. CONCLUSIONS Twenty two percent of all cardiac surgery patients did not show an improvement in the physical domain score of the HRQoL between the preoperative period and 1 year after surgery. Independent risk factors for non-recovery after cardiac surgery were baseline SF-36 physical domain score, diabetes, female sex, any postoperative infection and the need for PCI in the first year. Further research is needed to tailor the patient selection procedure prior to surgery and potentially modify risk factors in the perioperative process. Abstract
After a cardiovascular event, patients and their families often face numerous changes in their lives. Poorly addressing physical and psychological challenges can lead to an impaired quality of life. Sexuality is an important quality of life aspect to many patients and couples who can be negatively affected by a cardiovascular event. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships. Time to resume sexual activity after myocardial revascularization surgery is a gap in cardiologic practice. We know from literature that coronary patients have decreased sexual activity. There are barriers from the medical environment such as lack of knowledge, confidence and training, and many others that arise from the patient's perspective, which do not allow generating a space to address sexual problems. This review aims to familiarize and update cardiologists, providing knowledge and resources to face the impact of myocardial revascularization surgery on the quality of sexual life, promoting multidisciplinary management among doctors and other health professionals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cardiac surgery has little effect on life expectancy in elderly patients. Thus, improving the quality of life should be the main factor affecting therapeutic decisions. Most studies on quality of life in elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery report improvement but have limitations. Consequently, we assessed improvements in the quality of life of elderly patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery, identified influencing variables and established patterns of mental and physical health variations in the first year postoperatively. METHODS We conducted a prospective study of patients aged 65 or older who underwent elective cardiac surgery between September 2011 and August 2013. The 36-item Short Form (SF-36) surveys were obtained preoperatively and at 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS The 430 preoperative patients with a mean age of 74 years (SD 5.5 years) comprised 220 men. Most physical health improvements occurred within 3 months and continued to improve significantly until 12 months. Predictive variables for patients showing less improvement were poor preoperative physical health, female sex, older age and longer length of hospital stay. Mental health improved significantly through the third postoperative month. The negative predictive variables were poor preoperative mental health and longer intensive care unit stay. CONCLUSIONS Most patients improved both physically and mentally after surgery, and most of the improvement occurred within 3 months post-surgery. These improvement patterns should be taken into account when creating rehabilitation programmes, and patients should be counselled on what improvements can be expected during the first 12 months after surgery.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW With an ever-aging population, the treatment of multi-vessel coronary artery disease (CAD) has increasingly become focused not only on mortality, but on symptom relief and improving quality of life (QOL). The purpose of this review is to present a summary on the subject of QOL after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG), highlighting the latest comparative trials in the field. RECENT FINDINGS About 1 month after revascularization, patients recovering from either PCI or CABG report improvements in angina frequency. However, at 6 months and in the years that follow, angina relief is significantly better after CABG compared with PCI. Correspondingly, the use of antiangina medication is significantly higher following PCI, even in recent years with the use of drug-eluting stents. Regarding general health status, at the 1-month time point, PCI patients have recovered faster than those who have had surgery, reporting fewer physical limitations, less bodily pain, and greater QOL and treatment satisfaction. Nevertheless, these differences disappear by 6 months, and in the years thereafter, CABG patients report fewer physical limitations compared with those who have undergone PCI. About 5 years after revascularization, significant benefits remain favoring CABG in term of physical, emotional, and mental health. SUMMARY Patients with multivessel coronary artery disease attain important QOL benefits following revascularization with either PCI or CABG. Percutaneous treatments lead to a more rapid recovery and improved short-term health status compared with CABG at 1 month. However, surgery results in greater angina relief and improved QOL compared with PCI 6 months after revascularization and beyond.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Survival rates in the elderly after cardiac surgery have improved over the last decades and therewith more attention is directed toward Quality of Life (QoL) as a patient reported outcome measure. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to explore QoL in patients one year after coronary artery bypass grafting, with special interest in the elderly patients (≥80 years). METHODS In a quantitative, retrospective single-center study patients with isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (eg, nonvalve) surgery aged 80 years or older and operated in 2013 were included (n = 32). A control group of patients aged younger than 80 years was selected by matching based on gender and a recalculated (for age) logistic European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (log EuroSCORE I) during the same period (n = 48). QoL assessment by the EuroQol questionnaire (EQ-5D) and additional questions were performed at one-year follow-up. RESULTS QoL in elderly patients was 0.79 versus 0.90 in younger patients (P = 0.013). Overall, 54.8% of the elderly experience some or extreme problems in mobility versus 18.8% in the younger group (P = 0.001). Elderly patients also experience more problems in self care (19.3 vs 4.2%, P = 0.029). Nine of the elderly (29%) valued their postoperative health status to be worse than preoperatively versus 5 (10%) in the younger group (P = 0.028). Only patients aged 80 years or older would choose not to have surgery again (12.9%). Hospital mortality was 3.1% in the elderly group (n = 32) and 0% in the younger group (n = 48). CONCLUSION Not all elderly patients experience benefits in terms of QoL one year after cardiac surgery. Therefore, potential benefits and risks need to be considered and discussed by physicians and patients before making the decision to operate or not.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore associations between HRQL, marital status, and comorbid disorders in men and women following cardiac surgery. METHOD A secondary analysis was completed using data from a randomized controlled trial in which 416 individuals (23% women) scheduled for elective coronary artery bypass graft and/or valve surgery were recruited between March 2012 and September 2013. HRQL was assessed using the Health State Descriptive System (15D) preoperatively, then at 2 weeks, and at 3, 6, and 12 months following cardiac surgery. Linear mixed model analyses were performed to explore associations between HRQL, social support, and comorbid disorders. RESULTS The overall 15D scores for the total sample improved significantly from 2 weeks to 3 months post surgery, with only a gradual change observed from 3 to 12 months. Thirty percent (n = 92) of the total sample reported a lower 15D total score at 12 months compared to preoperative status, of whom 78% (n = 71) had a negative minimum important differences (MID), indicating a worse HRQL status. When adjusted for age and marital status, women had statistically significant lower 15D total scores compared to men at 3, 6, and 12 months post surgery. Compared to pre-surgery, improvement was demonstrated in 4 out of 15 dimensions of HRQL for women, and in 6 out of 15 dimensions for men at 12 months post surgery. Both men and women associated back/neck problems, depression, and persistent pain intensity with lower HRQL; for women, not living with a partner/spouse was associated with lower HRQL up to 12 months. CONCLUSION Women experienced decreased HRQL and a slower first-year recovery following cardiac surgery compared to men. This study demonstrates a need for follow-up and support to help women manage their symptoms and improve their function within the first year after cardiac surgery. This was particularly pronounced for those women living alone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We sought to reveal whether the severity of angina pectoris affects sleep quality after elective coronary artery bypass grafting. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients scheduled to undergo isolated coronary artery bypass grafting were divided into two groups, having a recent myocardial infarction (Group 1, n=22, mean age 59.40±7.79 years) or not having a recent myocardial infarction (Group 2, n=30, mean age 59.73±7.72 years). The assessment included the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Angina Score, the visual analogue scale for postoperative pain and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). RESULTS The two groups were similar in regard to baseline characteristics. Cross-clamp time was significantly higher (p=0.007) and the use of inotropes was significantly more common (p=0.01) in those patients with recent myocardial infarction compared to those without. Mean Canadian Cardiovascular Society scores were also higher in patients with recent myocardial infarction (p=0.02). Total Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score was significantly higher in patients with recent myocardial infarction (8.45±3.50 vs. 5.03±2.32, respectively, p<0.001). In multivariate analysis, higher angina score (OR: 3.27, 95% CI, 1.20-8.90, p=0.02) and longer time of intensive care unit stay (OR: 6.15, 95% CI, 1.49-25.35, p=0.01) were found to be independent predictors of poor sleep quality. The Canadian Cardiovascular Society angina score showed a significant positive correlation with poor sleep duration score (<0.001), sleep disturbance score (p=0.02), day dysfunction due to sleepiness score (p=0.001), sleep efficiency score (p=0.003), overall sleep quality score (0.03) and total PSQI score (p=0.004). CONCLUSION The severity of angina pectoris in the preoperative period is independently associated with worse sleep quality after elective isolated coronary artery bypass surgery.

Abstract
A proportion of elderly with coronary artery disease is rapidly growing. They have more severe coronary artery disease, therefore, derive more benefit from revascularization and have a greater need for it. The elderly is a heterogeneous group, but compared to the younger cohort, the choice of the optimal revascularization method is much more complicated among them. In recent decades, results has improved dramatically both in surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), even in very old persons. Despite the lack of evidence in elderly, it is obvious, that coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) has a more pronounced effect on long-term survival in price of more strokes, while PCI is certainly less invasive. Age itself is not a criterion for the selection of treatment strategy, but the elderly are often more interested in quality of life and personal independence instead of longevity. This article discusses the factors that influence the choice of the revascularization method in the elderly with stable angina and presents a complex algorithm for making an individual risk-benefit profile. As a consequence the features of CABG and PCI in elderly patients are exposed. Emphasis is centered on the frailty and non-medical factors, including psychosocial, as essential components in making the decision of what strategy to choose. Good communication with the patients and giving them unbiased information is encouraged.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study evaluates the changes in quality of life (QOL) six months after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) related to the patients' age. METHODS The total of 243 consecutive patients completed the Nottingham Health Profile Questionnaire part 1 before and six months after CABG. Postoperative questionnaire was completed by 226 patients. Patients were divided into four examined groups (<50, 50-59, 60-69 and ≥70 years), according to their age. RESULTS Six months after CABG, the quality of life in different sections has been significantly improved in most patients.The analysis of the relation between the age and the changes in QOL of patients six months after CABG showed a significant correlation among the patients' age and the improvement of QOL in the sections of physical mobility (r = 0.18, p = 0.008), social isolation (r = 0.17, p = 0.01) and energy ( r = 0.21, p = 0.002). The most prominent improvement was found in older patients. The age was not an independent predictor of QOL deterioration after CABG. CONCLUSIONS The most noticeable improvement of QOL six months after CABG was found in older patients. Age is not the independent predictor of deterioration of QOL after CABG.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Evaluating the impact of coronary revascularization on patients' health related quality of life with a patient-based and disease-specific tool is important for drawing conclusions about treatment and outcomes. This study reports on the translation, adaptation and psychometric evaluation of a Greek version of the Coronary Revascularization Outcome Questionnaire (CROQ-Gr). METHODS A total of 609 (81.7% male) patients who had undergone coronary revascularization (percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass grafting) were recruited from four hospitals in Athens. After translating the CROQ into Greek, a preliminary qualitative study and a pilot quantitative study were conducted. A full psychometric evaluation was carried out on the main study's data. RESULTS The psychometric evaluation demonstrated that the CROQ-Gr is acceptable to patients (high response rate, low missing data) and has a good level of reliability (internal consistency >0.70, test-retest reliability >0.90) and validity (both content and construct validity). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study show the CROQ-Gr to be a psychometrically rigorous patient-based measure of outcomes of coronary revascularization. It would be appropriate for use in evaluative research as well as a routine clinical tool to aid cardiologists in monitoring the outcomes of care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE It is important for patients recovering from coronary artery bypass (CAB) surgery to initiate and maintain recommended exercise guidelines. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe factors that influence adherence to exercise, and perceptions of activity limitations and health-related quality of life (QoL) in older patients recovering from CAB surgery. SUBJECTS Participants were 28 people aged 65 and older, prospectively recruited from a U.S. hospital following CAB surgery. PROCEDURES A qualitative description methodology was used to identify factors that influenced participants' feelings about exercise and QoL. Data were collected using phone interviews 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Data were coded by identifying significant statements, grouping them into meaningful units or "themes", and generating descriptions of participants' experiences and understandings. RESULTS Across time points, participants' most commonly described motivators were that it feels good to exercise, and belief that it improves physical health. The most commonly cited barriers to exercise were other time commitments, inclement weather, and pain/injury/illness related or unrelated to CAB surgery. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Motivating themes remained consistent across the time intervals but the number of responses regarding barriers to exercise increased over time. A better understanding of the patient experience may help to promote exercise initiation and adherence following CAB surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical revascularization of the coronary arteries leads to changes in quality of life (QoL) for patients with coronary heart disease. The aim of this work was to monitor QoL, considering cognitive function, depression, and activities of daily living in elderly patients after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). METHODS This study included 65 patients (29 women and 36 men) aged 61-74 years with stable coronary heart disease who underwent CABG. The control group included 29 women and 36 men aged 61-74 years who were not suffering from coronary heart disease. The questionnaires used in the study canvassed QoL (Nottingham Health Profile), cognitive function, depression, and basic and instrumental activities of daily living. The research was conducted before surgery and repeated 6 and 12 months after surgery. RESULTS QoL was comparable between women and men and was lower than in the control group (P<0.05). After CABG, the values for particular domains of QoL improved more in men than in women. There was a reduction in the severity of depression 6 months after surgery in men and 12 months after surgery in women. CONCLUSION Elderly patients with coronary heart disease have decreased QoL, which normalizes in men and improves in women after CABG.
