Nutritional modulation of health, egg quality and environmental pollution of the layers

World egg production and consumption have been increasing for the past decades. Traditional strategies in poultry nutrition have made vital contributions to this great growth in quantity. However, current global issues should be considered in modern egg production such as growing populations and food security, food safety and quality, limited resources and environmental problems. The development of knowledge of poultry nutrition and modern biotechnology provides novel nutritional approaches to closely fit the requirement of pullets and laying hens, which will consequently decrease the nutrition excretion and maintain the lower cost of feed. Nutrition has also been widely accepted as a strategy to influence health and diseases of laying hens. The maintenance of good health is an important prerequisite for improving productivity and egg quality. In addition, there are many measures and strategies for minimizing the incidence of egg defects and providing a choice of lifestyle to enhance human health. This paper reviews current research progress on developing innovative technologies and strategies to maximize animal health and performance, improve the quality of egg products and minimize pollution caused by poultry production.

Effect of Dietary Crude Protein and Lysine on Feather Growth in Chicks to Twenty-One Days of Age

A study was conducted to evaluate feather development in male broiler chickens fed variable levels of dietary CP and lysine. Diets contained 170, 210, 250, or 290 g of CP/kg with 0.86, 1.22, 1.34, or 1.46% lysine, each being fed to 2 replicate groups of 4 chicks. Dietary CP per se had a significant effect on feather weight and feather nitrogen gain. Increasing dietary CP from 170 to 250 g of CP/kg of diet increased feather weight and feather nitrogen gain. No differences were found at higher dietary CP levels. Dietary lysine levels from 0.86 to 1.46% did not affect feather weight, feather nitrogen gain, or feather:body weight in male chicks to 21 d. However, feather weight and feather nitrogen gain decreased as lysine increased in diets with 170 and 210 g of CP but not with 250 or 290 g of CP/kg. Percentage of total feather nitrogen was also influenced by the level of dietary lysine in diets containing 210 and 250 g of CP/kg. Feather development was more influenced by dietary CP per se than by levels of lysine.

Nitrogen retention and performance of brown laying hens on diets with different protein content and constant concentration of amino acids and energy

1. The aim of this study was to determine the nitrogen balance and the performance of laying hens fed on diets with a protein content lower than the diets currently used in commercial practice but with adequate concentrations of lysine, sulphur amino acids, tryptophan and threonine. 2. Ninety-six Hy-Line Brown hens, 24 weeks old, were divided into 3 groups of 8 replicates and received, for 16 weeks, diets formulated to have 3 different protein concentrations: 170 (control), 150 and 130 g/kg CP and the same energy content. For each protein concentration, the contents of lysine, methionine, methionine+cystine, tryptophan and threonine were maintained at minimum requirement concentrations by supplying synthetic amino acids. 3. In the first half of the trial, egg production and egg weight were similar in all groups. From the 9th week onwards group 150 CP laid heavier eggs and had a slightly lower egg deposition and total mass. Food conversion ratio was best in the control group. 4. Nitrogen intake was related to the protein concentration of the diet, the food intake being almost the same in the 3 experimental groups. Faecal nitrogen content significantly and linearly decreased with reduction in dietary protein content and was about 50% of the intake. Considering the nitrogen faecal/intake ratio, the 150 CP group showed better nitrogen utilisation at each sampling time.
