Effect of different ratios of phytogenic feed additives on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, intestinal barrier integrity, and immune response in weaned pigs challenged with a pathogenic Escherichia coli

Effect of diets supplemented with coated plant essential oil on the growth performance, immunity, antioxidant activity, and fecal microbiota of weaned piglets

Introduction

This trial was conducted to compare the effect of diets supplemented with plant essential oil (PEO) and coated plant essential oil (CEO) on growth performance, immunity, antioxidant activity, and fecal microbiota of weaned piglets.

Methods

A total of 360 21-day-old weaned piglets were randomly allocated into three groups, namely, CON, PEO, and CEO (basal diets supplemented with 0, 500 mg/kg PEO, and 500 mg/kg CEO, respectively) for a 4-week feeding trial.

Results and discussion

The results showed that dietary supplementation with CEO improved the average final weight and average daily gain, decreased the diarrhea rate, increased antioxidant enzyme activities, enhanced immunoglobulin concentrations, and decreased concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the serum of weaned piglets (p < 0.05). In addition, CEO addition increased the fecal concentrations of propionic acid and isovaleric acid of piglets (p < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that fecal microorganisms at the genus level were closely correlated with the volatile fatty acid concentrations. The present study indicated that PEO and CEO could improve growth performance, enhance immunity, and increase antioxidant capacity by modulating the microbial flora in weaned piglets. Moreover, CEO addition seemed to offer more positive results than of PEO addition.

Pioneering gut health improvements in piglets with phytogenic feed additives

This research investigates the effects of phytogenic feed additives (PFAs) on the growth performance, gut microbial community, and microbial metabolic functions in weaned piglets via a combined 16S rRNA gene amplicon and shotgun metagenomics approach. A controlled trial was conducted using 200 pigs to highlight the significant influence of PFAs on gut microbiota dynamics. Notably, the treatment group revealed an increased gut microbiota diversity, as measured with the Shannon and Simpson indices. The increase in diversity is accompanied by an increase in beneficial bacterial taxa, such as Roseburia, Faecalibacterium, and Prevotella, and a decline in potential pathogens like Clostridium sensu stricto 1 and Campylobacter. Shotgun sequencing at the species level confirmed these findings. This modification in microbial profile was coupled with an altered profile of microbial metabolic pathways, suggesting a reconfiguration of microbial function under PFA influence. Significant shifts in overall microbial community structure by week 8 demonstrate PFA treatment's temporal impact. Histomorphological examination unveiled improved gut structure in PFA-treated piglets. The results of this study indicate that the use of PFAs as dietary supplements can be an effective strategy, augmenting gut microbiota diversity, reshaping microbial function, enhancing gut structure, and optimising intestinal health of weaned piglets providing valuable implications for swine production. Impacts of F18+Escherichia coli on Intestinal Health of Nursery Pigs and Dietary Interventions

This review focused on the impact of F18+E. coli on pig production and explored nutritional interventions to mitigate its deleterious effects. F18+E. coli is a primary cause of PWD in nursery pigs, resulting in substantial economic losses through diminished feed efficiency, morbidity, and mortality. In summary, the F18+E. coli induces intestinal inflammation with elevated IL6 (60%), IL8 (43%), and TNF-α (28%), disrupting the microbiota and resulting in 14% villus height reduction. Besides the mortality, the compromised intestinal health results in a 20% G:F decrease and a 10% ADFI reduction, ultimately culminating in a 28% ADG decrease. Among nutritional interventions to counter F18+E. coli impacts, zinc glycinate lowered TNF-α (26%) and protein carbonyl (45%) in jejunal mucosa, resulting in a 39% ADG increase. Lactic acid bacteria reduced TNF-α (36%), increasing 51% ADG, whereas Bacillus spp. reduced IL6 (27%), increasing BW (12%). Lactobacillus postbiotic increased BW (14%) and the diversity of beneficial bacteria. Phytobiotics reduced TNF-α (23%) and IL6 (21%), enhancing feed efficiency (37%). Additional interventions, including low crude protein formulation, antibacterial minerals, prebiotics, and organic acids, can be effectively used to combat F18+E. coli infection. These findings collectively underscore a range of effective strategies for managing the challenges posed by F18+E. coli in pig production.
