The Use of an Activity Monitoring System for the Early Detection of Health Disorders in Young Bulls

In large intensive beef production systems, the identification of sick animals is difficult. We hypothesized that sick bulls would change daily activities when sick. Thus, the use of activity monitoring devices might allow for the early identification of sick bulls. The device used measured steps counts, lying time, lying bouts, and frequency and time at the feed bunk. Sick bulls started to behave differently from healthy bulls at least 10 days before the appearance of clinical signs. The prediction model identified bulls at risk of becoming sick 9 days before the visual diagnostic based on the time attending to the feed bunk, the time lying, and the frequency of lying bouts. The validation indicated that the prediction resulted in 50% false positives and 7% false negatives. Activity monitoring systems may be useful tools to identify bulls at risk of becoming sick.

Abstract

Bulls (n = 770, average age = 127 days, SD = 53 days of age) were fitted with an activity monitoring device for three months to study if behavior could be used for early detection of diseases. The device measured the number of steps, lying time, lying bouts, and frequency and time of attendance at the feed bunk. All healthy bulls (n = 699) throughout the trial were used to describe the normal behavior. A match-pair test was used to assign healthy bulls for the comparison vs. sick bulls. The model was developed with 70% of the data, and the remaining 30% was used for the validation. Healthy bulls did 2422 ± 128 steps/day, had 28 ± 1 lying bouts/day, spent 889 ± 12 min/day lying, and attended the feed bunk 8 ± 0.2 times/d for a total of 95 ± 8 min/day. From the total of bulls enrolled in the study, 71 (9.2%) were diagnosed sick. Their activities changed at least 10 days before the clinical signs of disease. Bulls at risk of becoming sick were predicted 9 days before clinical signs with a sensitivity and specificity of 79% and 81%, respectively. The validation of the model resulted in a sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 92%, 42%, and 82 %, respectively, and a 50% false positive and 12.5% false negative rates. Results suggest that activity-monitoring systems may be useful in the early identification of sick bulls. However, the high false positive rate may require further refinement.

Acute and subacute effects of a synthetic kisspeptin analog, C6, on serum concentrations of luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and testosterone in prepubertal bull calves

Kisspeptin (KP) is a neuropeptide integral in regulating puberty and gonadotropin releasing hormone. Compound 6 (C6), a KP analog, is more potent in vitro, has a longer half-life, and may have greater therapeutic applications than KP. To determine the acute and subacute effects of KP and C6 on serum concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormones (FSH), and testosterone (T), prepubertal bull calves [12.1 ± 1.1 (SD) weeks of age; 91.2 ± 10.8 kg BW] were assigned to one of three treatment groups [Saline (n = 4), KP (n = 4; 20 nmoles), or C6 (n = 4; 20 nmoles). Treatments were administered intramuscularly once daily for four consecutive days. Blood samples were collected every 15 min for 6 h immediately following treatment administration on Day 1 (acute) and Day 4 (subacute). Serum concentrations of LH, FSH, and T were determined by radioimmunoassay. For each day, effects of treatment, time, and interactions on LH and FSH concentrations and pulse parameters were analyzed using procedures for repeated measures with JMP Software (SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC). There was a treatment × time interaction during Day 1 (P < 0.0001) and Day 4 (P = 0.02) such that LH concentrations were greatest following administration of C6 (albeit diminished during Day 4). Number of LH pulses were least (P = 0.02) and LH nadirs were highest (P = 0.04) following administration of C6 (P = 0.02). There was no effect of treatment (P = 0.95) or treatment × time interaction (P = 0.10) on serum FSH concentrations during Day 1. During Day 4 FSH concentrations (P = 0.02) and number of FSH pulses (P = 0.02) were least following administration of C6. There was no effect of treatment (P = 0.33), time (P = 0.19) or treatment × time interaction (P = 0.44) on T concentrations. In conclusion, acute and subacute C6 increased LH concentrations and subacute C6 decreased FSH concentrations and pulse parameters. Despite suppression of FSH with subacute daily administration of C6, altered frequency and timing of treatment with KP analogs may have application to affect the onset of puberty in livestock.

Carcass traits and consumer acceptability of striploin steaks from band-castrated, intratesticular zinc-injected, or sexually intact beef cattle

One hundred and eighty beef bulls (BW = 337 ± 10.9 kg) were blocked by BW (6 blocks) and assigned randomly to one of three treatments on day 0: 1) INJ; received 1 mL (100 mg Zn) of a Zn solution in each testis, 2) BAN; received blood-restrictive rubber band placed upon the dorsal aspect of the scrotum, and 3) BUL; bulls with testicles remaining intact. Cattle were grouped by weight block in a randomized complete block design (three treatment pens/block and 10 cattle/pen) and harvested by block on three separate dates when blocks reached similar BW and visual subcutaneous fat thickness depth. Striploins were removed from the left carcass sides, vacuum packaged and aged for 14 d, and then frozen at −20 °C. Frozen striploins were sliced into 2.54-cm-thick steaks and remained frozen until analyses. Steaks (n = 3/animal) were used to assess consumer acceptability via consumer taste panel (n = 152 panelists), Warner-Bratzler shear force, percentage cook loss, and cooked color values. Data were analyzed using mixed model procedures; pen was the experimental unit for all dependent variables. Hot carcass weights and LM area were greater (P < 0.01) for the INJ and BUL treatments compared with BAN. Mean yield grade did not differ between treatments (P = 0.12), although BAN carcasses had smaller LM area (P < 0.01) than BUL or INJ carcasses. Percentage of USDA Choice or better carcasses was greater (P < 0.01) for BAN than INJ and BUL treatments. Consumer panelists detected a difference in perceived tenderness; BAN steaks had greater (P = 0.02) tenderness scores than BUL steaks, whereas INJ steaks were intermediate. Panelists rated juiciness of BAN steaks greater (P < 0.01) than either BUL or INJ steaks. Panelists rated beef flavor greater (P = 0.01) for BAN and BUL steaks than INJ steaks. Overall acceptability was greater (P < 0.01) for BAN compared with INJ steaks, whereas BUL steaks were intermediate. Percentage cook loss of striploin steaks (P = 0.47) and Warner-Bratzler shear force values (P = 0.11) did not differ. Cooked color lightness (L*) and redness (a*) values were not affected (P ≥ 0.23) by treatment. Striploin steaks from BAN and BUL treatments had greater (P = 0.02) yellowness values (b*) than INJ steaks. The ratio of red-to-brown (630:580 nm) of cooked striploin steaks was greater (P = 0.05) for INJ than either BAN or BUL treatments. Carcass and palatability outcomes of INJ were more similar to BUL than BAN, suggesting limited efficacy of INJ in mature beef bulls at feedlot entry.

Using advanced technologies to quantify beef cattle behavior

For decades, we have relied upon visual observation of animal behavior to define clinical disease, assist in breeding selection, and predict growth performance. Limitations of visual monitoring of cattle behavior include training of personnel, subjectivity, and brevity. In addition, extensive time and labor is required to visually monitor behavior in large numbers of animals, and the prey instinct of cattle to disguise abnormal behaviors in the presence of a human evaluator is problematic. More recently, cattle behavior has been quantified objectively and continuously using advanced technologies to assess animal welfare, indicate lameness or disease, and detect estrus in both production and research settings. The current review will summarize three methodologies for quantification of cattle behavior with focus on U.S. beef production systems; 1) three-axis accelerometers that quantify physical behavior, 2) systems that document feeding and watering behavior via radio frequency, and 3) triangulation or global positioning systems to determine location and movement of cattle within a pen or pasture. Furthermore, advances in Wi-Fi and radio frequency technology have allowed many of these systems to operate remotely and in real-time and efforts are underway to develop commercial applications that may allow early detection of respiratory or other cattle diseases in the production environment. Current challenges with commercial application of technology for early disease detection include establishment of an appropriate algorithm to ensure maximum sensitivity and specificity, reliable and repeatable data collection in harsh environments, cost:benefit, and integration with traditional methodology for clinical diagnosis. Advanced technologies have also allowed cattle researchers to determine temporal variance in behavior or variability between experimental treatments. However, these data sets are typically very large and challenges exist regarding statistical analysis and reporting.
