Abstract
We aimed to understand the changes in nutritional parameters and performance of beef cows during the peripartum, whether receiving or not receiving protein supplements. Forty cows were used, divided into two treatments: CON-mineral mix and SUP-protein supplementation. Digestibility trial was performed at 45, 30, and 15 days (d) before the parturition and at 20 and 40 d of lactation. The ADG of cows pre- and postpartum was recorded along with the BCS in gestational (GT) and maternal (MT) tissues in the prepartum. There was an effect of treatment and period (p ≤ 0.044) for intakes of DM and CP. The forage intake was similar (p > 0.90) but varied with the effect of days related to parturition (p < 0.001). There was a 14.37% decrease in DM intake from d -30 to d -15 of prepartum. In the postpartum, at 20 d of lactation, there was an increase of 72.7% in relation to d -15 of prepartum. No differences were observed in postpartum ADG or BCS at parturition and postpartum (p ≥ 0.12). However, higher total and MT ADG (p ≤ 0.02) were observed in animals receiving supplementation, while ADG in GT remained similar (p > 0.14). In conclusion, there is a decrease in intake for pregnant cows close to parturition and greater performance of animals supplemented in prepartum.

Abstract
The objective of this research was to evaluate how pregnancy and feeding regimens affect the feed intake, digestibility, and efficiency of microbial nitrogen (N) synthesis in beef cows. Forty-four multiparous Nellore cows, comprising 32 gestating and 12 non-gestating cows, with an average weight of 451 ± 10 kg, were assigned to either a HIGH (ad libitum) or LOW (limited feeding at 1.2 times maintenance based on the NRC) feeding regimen during the gestational period. The dry matter intake (DMI) in kg/d was significantly greater (P < 0.01) in HIGH-fed cows. The DMI reduced (P < 0.05) in proportion to the shrunk body weight (SBW) as days of pregnancy (DOP) increased. The interaction between feeding level and DOP was significant (P < 0.05) for the digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), N compounds, ether extract (EE), ash- and protein-free neutral detergent fiber (NDFap), gross energy (GE), and total digestible nutrients (TDN). Except for DM and TDN digestibility, there was a reduced nutrient digestibility as gestation progressed in HIGH-fed cows. In contrast, digestibility increased as a function of DOP in LOW-fed cows. Microbial N synthesis (g/day) was significantly higher in HIGH-fed cows (P < 0.001) compared to LOW-fed cows. The efficiency of microbial N production per g of N intake and kg of digestible OM intake was (P = 0.021) and tended (P = 0.051) to be greater in LOW-fed cows compared to HIGH-fed cows. In summary, HIGH-fed Nellore cows reduce feed intake and digestibility with advancing gestation, affecting feed utilization. In addition, LOW-fed cows, showed higher microbial protein synthesis efficiency, potentially making them more nutrient-efficient under challenging nutritional conditions.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate whether oversupplying metabolizable protein (MP) during late gestation influences glucose and insulin concentrations, and insulin resistance (IR) in late gestation and early lactation. Crossbred Hereford, first-lactation heifers were individually fed diets to supply 133% (HMP, n = 11) or 100% (CON, n = 10) of their predicted MP requirements for 55 ± 4 d (mean ± SD) prior to calving. All heifers received a common lactation ration formulated to meet postpartum requirements (103% MP and 126% ME). After feed was withheld for 12 h, cattle underwent an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) on d -6.7 ± 0.9 and 14.3 ± 0.4 by infusing a 50% dextrose solution (1.36 g glucose/kg BW 0.75) through a jugular catheter with plasma collected at -10, 0 (immediately after infusion), 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, and 120 min, respective to the infusion. Glucose and insulin concentrations were assessed. Insulin resistance indices (homeostasis model of insulin resistance [HOMA-IR], quantitative insulin sensitivity check index [QUICKI], revised quantitative insulin sensitivity check index [RQUICK], and RQUICKI incorporating serum beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations [RQUICKIBHB]) were calculated from measurements of serum non-esterified fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate and plasma glucose and insulin concentrations on d -34 ± 4, -15 ± 4, 7 ± 1, 28 ± 3, 70 ± 3, and 112 ± 3. Colostrum samples were collected within an hour of calving (prior to suckling) and analyzed for insulin concentration. Data were analyzed as a randomized block design using the PROC GLIMMIX of SAS, accounting for repeated measurements when necessary. Baseline (-10 min) plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were elevated (P ≤ 0.038) for HMP heifers during the antepartum IVGTT, but not (P ≥ 0.25) during the postpartum IVGTT. Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations throughout the antepartum or postpartum IVGTT did not differ (P ≥ 0.18) by prepartum treatment, nor did other glucose and insulin IVGTT parameters (i.e., max concentration and time to reach max concentration, nadir values, clearance rates and half-lives, area-under-the-curve, and insulin sensitivity index; P ≥ 0.20). Antepartum IVGTT IR indices indicated that HMP heifers were more (P ≤ 0.011) IR than their counterparts. Similarly, the prepartum HOMA-IR was greater (P = 0.033) for HMP heifers, suggesting increased IR. Postpartum IR indices did not (P ≥ 0.25) indicate that prepartum MP consumption impacted postpartum IR. Colostrum insulin concentration was increased (P = 0.004) by nearly 2-fold for HMP relative to CON heifers. These data demonstrate that prepartum MP overfeeding alters baseline glucose-insulin concentrations in late-pregnant beef heifers and increases colostrum insulin content without having carry-over effects on postpartum glucose-insulin concentrations and IR.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to determine whether oversupplying MP prepartum affects postpartum cow BW, colostrum composition, milk production and composition, protein catabolism in the dam, and calf growth. Crossbred Hereford heifers were individually fed a control treatment designed to meet MP requirements (CON; n = 10) or 133% of the MP requirement (HMP; n = 11) from day -55 ± 4 until parturition. All cows were provided a common postpartum diet. Cow BW was measured on days 7 ± 1, 14 ± 2, 28 ± 3, 57 ± 4, 82 ± 5, and 111 ± 3 relative to parturition. DMI and ruminal pH were measured daily and summarized by week until day 33. Milk yield was estimated based on a 12-h two-quarter milk yield on days 7 ± 1, 12 ± 1, 28 ± 3, 33 ± 3, 70 ± 3, and 112 ± 3. Urine samples were collected from cows over a 6-d period starting on days 7 ± 1 and 28 ± 3 and the composited samples were analyzed for 3-methylhistidine (3-MH) and creatinine. Muscle samples were collected from cows on day 13 ± 1 while calf muscle samples were collected on days 2 and 111 ± 3 of age. Muscle samples from cows were analyzed for markers of protein catabolism, and calf muscle samples were analyzed for genes regulating cell growth and differentiation. Data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design using the MIXED procedure of SAS accounting for repeated measures when necessary. Postpartum BW did not differ (P ≥ 0.30) by treatment, day, or the interaction of treatment and day (T × D), but rump fat decreased (P = 0.011) as lactation progressed. DMI decreased during weeks 2 and 3 compared to 1 and 4, whereas ruminal pH was less during weeks 2, 3, and 4 relative to week 1. Colostrum fat concentration was less (P = 0.003) for HMP than CON; but, milk production was not affected by treatment. Milk yield was greatest from days 7 to 33 and decreased thereafter (P < 0.01). Urinary 3-MH and the 3-MH:creatinine ratio did not differ by treatment, day, or the T × D (P ≥ 0.22) interaction, nor was there a difference (P ≥ 0.13) in the abundance of catabolic proteins. Calf growth was not affected by treatment, but HMP calves had greater expression (T × D, P = 0.05) of PPARG while PKM expression increased for CON calves (T × D, P = 0.04) at day 111 compared to their expression at day 2. Overfeeding MP during late gestation does not improve postpartum indicators of N balance or maternal muscle turnover but may alter colostrum composition and calf gene expression at weaning.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to determine the effect of oversupplying MP during late gestation on maternal BW, ruminal fermentation, nitrogen balance, and skeletal muscle catabolism. Crossbred Hereford heifers (n = 24) were assigned to a control treatment designed to meet MP requirements (CON) or a treatment providing 133% of the MP requirement (HMP). Heifers were individually fed their treatment from day -55 ± 3 relative to parturition and DMI was summarized by week. BW was measured on day -55 ± 3, -41 ± 3, -27 ± 3, and -8 ± 3. Ruminal digesta samples were collected on day -34 ± 5 and -15 ± 4 for short-chain fatty acid and ammonia-N (NH3-N) concentration. Plasma was collected the day prior to ruminal digesta samples and analyzed for plasma urea-N. Nitrogen balance was measured over a 6-d period starting on day -34 ± 4 and -15 ± 4. Following completion of the N balance periods, muscle biopsies were collected from the longissimus dorsi and analyzed for abundance of proteins relating to skeletal muscle catabolism. Data were analyzed as a randomized complete block (date of parturition) design with repeated measures using the MIXED procedure of SAS. Heifers fed HMP increased conceptus-corrected BW by a greater magnitude than CON at day -8 relative to -55 and -41 (treatment × day, P < 0.01). DMI increased (P < 0.01) by 18% on week -2 compared to -8, but then decreased (P < 0.01) by 8.0% for week -1. N-intake, apparent N digestion, N excretion, and N retention (g/d) were all greater (P < 0.01) for HMP heifers than CON but did not differ when expressed as a proportion of N intake. Ruminal NH3-N decreased (treatment × day, P < 0.01) as parturition approached for HMP (10.1 to 8.6 mg/dL); whereas, NH3-N was not affected for CON (1.0 to 1.3 mg/dL). Consequently, plasma urea-N was greater (P < 0.01) for HMP heifers (15.0 vs. 7.5 mg/dL). Heifers fed HMP had improved (P < 0.01) DM, OM, and NDF digestibility relative to CON heifers. The abundance of calpastatin was greater (P = 0.03) and calpain tended to be greater (P = 0.085) for CON cows compared to HMP. Feeding greater quantities of MP during late gestation may improve ruminal fermentation, N balance, and improve BW gain prepartum.
