Peppermint Essential Oil Toxicity to the Pear Psylla (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) and Potential Applications in the Field

A whole ecosystem approach to pear psyllid (Cacopsylla pyri) management in a changing climate

Whole ecosystem-based approaches are becoming increasingly common in pest management within agricultural systems. These strategies consider all trophic levels and abiotic processes within an ecosystem, including interactions between different factors. This review outlines a whole ecosystem approach to the integrated pest management of pear psyllid (Cacopsylla pyri Linnaeus) within pear (Pyrus communis L.) orchards, focusing on potential disruptions as a result of climate change. Pear psyllid is estimated to cost the UK pear industry £5 million per annum and has a significant economic impact on pear production globally. Pesticide resistance is well documented in psyllids, leading to many growers to rely on biological control using natural enemies during the summer months. In addition, multiple insecticides commonly used in pear psyllid control have been withdrawn from the UK and Europe, emphasising the need for alternative control methods. There is growing concern that climate change could alter trophic interactions and phenological events within agroecosystems. For example, warmer temperatures could lead to earlier pear flowering and pest emergence, as well as faster insect development rates and altered activity levels. If climate change impacts pear psyllid differently to natural enemies, then trophic mismatches could occur, impacting pest populations. This review aims to evaluate current strategies used in C. pyri management, discuss trophic interactions within this agroecosystem and highlight potential changes in the top-down and bottom-up control of C. pyri as a result of climate change. This review provides a recommended approach to pear psyllid management, identifies evidence gaps and outlines areas of future research.

Microextraction of essential oils: A review

Liquid phase microextraction (LPME) and solid phase microextraction (SPME) are popular extraction techniques for sample preparation due to their green and highly efficient single-step extraction efficiency. With the increasing attention to essential oils, their evaluation and analysis are significant in analytical sciences. In this review, starting from a brief description of the recent advances in the last decade, the attention has been focused on the up-to-date research works and applications based on liquid and solid phase microextraction for essential oil analyses. Particular attention has been given to the approaches using ionic liquids, eutectic solvents, gas flow assisted, and novel composite materials. In the end, the technological convergence of novel microextraction of essential oils in the future has been prospected.

Identification of Terpenoid Compounds and Toxicity Assays of Essential Oil Microcapsules from Artemisia stechmanniana

Plant essential oils, as biological pesticides, have been reviewed from several perspectives and play a key role in chemical ecology. However, plant essential oils show rapid degradation and vulnerability during actual usage. In this study, we conducted a detailed analysis of the compounds present in the essential oils of A. stechmanniana using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed seventeen terpenoid compounds in the A. stechmanniana oil, with four major terpenoid compounds, i.e., eucalyptol (15.84%), (+)-2-Bornanone (16.92%), 1-(1,2,3-Trimethyl-cyclopent-2-enyl)-ethanone (25.63%), and (-)-Spathulenol (16.38%), in addition to an amount of the other terpenoid compounds (25.26%). Indoor toxicity assays were used to evaluate the insecticidal activity of Artemisia stechmanniana essential oil against Aphis gossypii, Frankliniella occidentalis, and Bactericera gobica in Lycium barbarum. The LC₅₀/LD₅₀ values of A. stechmanniana essential oils against A. gossypii, F. occidentalis, and B. gobica were 5.39 mg/mL, 0.34 mg/L, and 1.40 μg/insect, respectively, all of which were highly efficient compared with azadirachtin essential oil. Interestingly, A. stechmanniana essential oil embedded in β-cyclodextrin (microencapsule) remained for only 21 days, whereas pure essential oils remained for only 5 days. A field efficacy assay with the A. stechmanniana microencapsule (AM) and doses at three concentrations was conducted in Lycium barbarum, revealing that the insecticidal activities of AM showed high efficiency, maintained a significant control efficacy at all concentrations tested, and remained for 21 days. Our study identified terpenoid compounds from untapped Artemisia plants and designed a novel method against pests using a new biopesticide on L. barbarum.

Contact toxicity and repellence of essential oil from Senecio scandens and its major components against three stored product insects

The objective of this work was to investigate the chemical compositions of the essential oil (EO) extracted from Senecio scandens by hydrodistillation and their insecticidal activities against Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne and Liposceis bostrychophila. The chemical profile of the EO were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and 20 compounds were identified which accounted for 88.03% of the total EO. Five major compounds identified in the EO were assayed against the three stored product insects. The EO showed strong contact toxicity to T. castaneum (LD₅₀ = 18.01 μg/adult), L. serricorne (LD₅₀ = 20.11 μg/adult) and L. bostrychophila (LD₅₀ = 72.14 μg/cm²). Among all compounds, geraniol showed the contact toxicity against L. serricorne and L. bostrychophila with LD₅₀ values of 15.82 μg/adult and 26.64 μg/cm². The EO and its five chemical compounds also exhibited different level of potential repellence to the three stored product insects.

Effect of Different Combinations of Phosphorus and Nitrogen Fertilization on Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Aphids in Wheat

While chemical fertilizers can be used to increase crop yield, the abuse of fertilizers aggravates environmental pollution and soil degradation. Understanding the effects of chemical fertilizers on the interaction between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and pest insects is of great benefit to crop and environmental protection, because AMF can enhance the nutrition absorption and insect resistance of crops. This study tested the effect of different levels of phosphorus, nitrogen, and their interactions on AMF, secondary metabolites, Sitobion avenae in garden, as well as the wheat traits in field. The results showed that AMF colonization on roots in the P0N1 treatment (0 g P/pot, 1.3083 g N/pot in the garden, and 0 g P/plot, 299.84 g N/plot) was the highest in both the garden and the field. The abundance of aphid was reduced in the P0N1 treatment, and there were negative relationships between aphids and AMF and phenolics, but a positive relationship between AMF and phenolics. Our results indicated that a change in the ratio of phosphorus to nitrogen affects the relationship among AMF, aphid abundance, and metabolites. The results also suggested an approach to save chemical fertilizers that could improve crop health and protect the agroecosystem against pollution at the same time.
