Ectoparasites of Cattle

Diverse groups of ectoparasitic arthropods cause significant morbidity and mortality in most of the approximately 1.49 billion head of cattle worldwide. Hematophagous ectoparasites (ie, blood-feeding flies, myiasis-causing flies, lice, mites, ticks) are the most important in cattle. Intense use of ectoparasiticides to treat infestations can result in ectoparasite populations becoming resistant to this treatment method. Approaches integrating the use of different technologies are required to manage cattle ectoparasites effectively while addressing societal expectations regarding food safety and environmental health. Assessing the status of coparasitism with ectoparasites and endoparasites in cattle across agroecosystems is critical in advancing integrated parasite management.

Haematobia irritans parasitism of F1 yak × beef cattle (Bos grunniens × Bos taurus) hybrids

The horn fly Haematobia irritans (Diptera: Muscidae) is a blood obligate ectoparasite of bovids that causes annual losses to the U.S. beef cattle industry of over US$1.75 billion. Climate warming, the anthropogenic dispersion of bovids and the cross-breeding of beef cattle with other bovid species may facilitate novel horn fly-host interactions. In particular, hybridizing yaks [Bos grunniens (Artiodactyla: Bovidae)] with beef cows (Bos taurus) for heterosis and carcass improvements may increase the exposure of yak × beef hybrids to horn flies. The present paper reports on the collection of digital images of commingled beef heifers (n = 12) and F1 yak × beef hybrid bovids (heifers, n = 7; steers, n = 5) near Laramie, Wyoming (∼ 2200 m a.s.l.) in 2018. The total numbers of horn flies on beef heifers and F1 yak × beef heifers [mean ± standard error (SE): 88 ± 13 and 70 ± 17, respectively] did not differ significantly; however, F1 yak × beef steers had greater total horn fly abundance (mean ± SE: 159 ± 39) than female bovids. The present report of this experiment is the first such report in the literature and suggests that F1 yak × beef bovids are as susceptible as cattle to horn fly parasitism. Therefore, similar monitoring and treatment practices should be adopted by veterinarians, entomologists and producers.

Commingled black and white cows (Bos taurus; Angus and Charolais) in high-elevation rangeland are differentially parasitised by Haematobia irritans

Globally horn flies (Haematobia irritans) are one of the most economically damaging parasites of beef cattle. These obligate blood-feeding external parasites take blood meals from cattle leading to blood loss, annoyance avoidance behaviours, and reductions in animal performance. Development of chemical resistance by horn flies suggests that novel management strategies are needed. More in-depth understanding of parasitism relative to hide colour and temperature, especially in a changing climate, may enhance animal production. In peak parasitism periods of 2016 and 2017, we measured horn fly loads on commingled black Angus and white Charolais cows in a cold high-elevation rangeland in Wyoming, USA. We tested how breed, year, and interactions explained horn fly parasitism and economic thresholds. In 2016 we also measured ambient and external cow temperatures to further elucidate thermal ecology mechanisms explaining horn fly hide colour preferences. Mean annual horn fly infestations were always four times greater or more on black cows than white cattle both years, but not all cattle reached economic thresholds all years and the breed by year interaction was not significant. Difference in horn fly preference for black cattle over white cattle in our cold high-elevation environment may be explained by greater absolute and relative external surface temperatures of black hided cows. Host colour and thermal preferences of horn flies could be incorporated into integrated pest management strategies that only treat darker hided cattle and producers in cold high-elevation environments conduct real-time monitoring to determine if treatments are even needed on a year-by-year basis.

Sex Ratios and Mating Status of the Horn Fly on Pastured Cattle as a Function of Repellent-Oil Treatments

Haematobia irritans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) were netted from pastured cattle in California over two summers, with the goal of documenting on-host sex ratios and mating success as they might vary with repellent applications. Sex ratios were calculated from 100 adults per herd per date, and mating status of females (n = 30 per herd per date) was assessed by dissection of spermathecae. Flies were collected before, during, and after 2-wk treatment periods with each of two repellent-oil mixtures: a 15% mixture of fatty acids (C8, C9, C10) in mineral oil or a 2% solution of geraniol in mineral oil. During the treatment period, flies were collected 3-4 d after the prior treatment and immediately before the next treatment. A separate herd used in the second year was untreated. Overall, the proportion female was 0.65 ± 0.01 (mean ± SE) (range 0.28-0.81). Sex ratios were not altered over time by treatments with either repellent. Overall, proportion of females mated was 0.744 ± 0.018 (range 0.40-1.00). Mating status was significantly affected by the two repellent treatments, which did not differ from each other. For treatment herds, proportion mated before treatment was 0.789 ± 0.039, dropping significantly to 0.659 ± 0.038 during the treatment period, and rebounding to 0.750 ± 0.035 after treatments ceased. Treatments probably killed or repelled the existing heterogeneous fly population, and during treatment relatively more flies were unmated recent arrivals.
