Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is limited research on neurocognitive outcome and associated risk factors in long-term, adult survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), without treatment of cranial radiation therapy. Moreover, the impact of fatigue severity and pain interference on neurocognition has received little attention. In this cross-sectional study, we examined neurocognitive outcome and associated factors in this population. METHOD Intellectual abilities, verbal learning/memory, processing speed, attention, and executive functions were compared to normative means/medians with one sample t tests or Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Associations with risk factors, fatigue severity, and pain interference were analyzed with linear regressions. RESULTS Long-term, adult survivors of childhood ALL (N = 53, 51% females, mean age = 24.4 years, SD = 4.4, mean = 14.7 years post-diagnosis, SD = 3.4) demonstrated above average intellectual abilities, but performed below average in attention, inhibition, processing speed, and shifting (p < 0.001). Executive functioning complaints were significantly higher than normative means, and positively associated with fatigue (p < 0.001). There was no interaction between sex and fatigue and no neurocognitive impairments were associated with pain interference, risk group, age at diagnosis, or sex. CONCLUSIONS Long-term, adult survivors of ALL treated without cranial radiation therapy, demonstrate domain-specific performance-based neurocognitive impairments. However, continued research on the neurocognitive outcome in this population as they age will be important in the coming years. Executive functioning complaints were frequently in the clinical range, and often accompanied by fatigue. This suggests a need for cognitive rehabilitation programs.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to describe the cortical patterns of brain activity during a gross dexterity task and develop a behavioral profile of children experiencing isolation. A cross-sectional assessment was conducted during one visit. Sample: Four pediatric patients who had undergone isolation within a hospital comprised the full data collection. During the collection, participants completed the Box and Blocks Test of gross manual dexterity while undergoing imaging of the motor cortex using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Participants also completed a Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Third Edition (BASC-3) self-report, which was analyzed along with a parent report to quantify their emotional and social behaviors. All participants displayed lower gross dexterity levels than normative data. Furthermore, three out of the four participants displayed ipsilateral dominance of the motor cortex during the dexterity task. Three of the participants displayed behavioral measures reported within clinically significant or at-risk scores. Clinically significant behavioral scores coupled with lower than expected manual dexterity values and ipsilateral hemispheric dominance indicate that neuroplastic changes can occur in populations undergoing hospitalized isolation. While the impacts of the treatments and isolation in this case cannot be separated, further studies should be conducted to understand these impacts of isolation.

Abstract
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignant neoplastic disease in children. With the continuous improvement in diagnosis and treatment, there has been an increasing number of ALL children who achieve long-term survival after complete remission; however, a considerable proportion of these children have cognitive impairment, which has a serious adverse impact on their learning, employment, and social life. This article reviews the latest research on cognitive impairment in children with ALL from the aspects of the influencing factors, detection techniques, and prevention/treatment methods for cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Background To investigate the clinical and neuroimaging characteristics of leukoencephalopathy among children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), especially after chemotherapy. Methods Clinical data for 17 pediatric patients with leukoencephalopathy and 17 matched controls were retrospectively analyzed. All participants were children with ALL admitted to the Children's Hospital of Soochow University from May 2011 to April 2021. The data mainly consisted of general information, laboratory studies, and imaging diagnostic results. Results Overall, 94.12% of the patients experienced neurological symptoms. The most common symptoms were seizure (7/17, 41.18%), nausea (5/17, 29.41%), vomiting (5/17, 29.41%), paralysis (5/17, 29.41%), and numbness (4/17, 23.53%). On neuroimaging, multiple and irregular lesions were observed, distributed mainly in the periventricular area (9/17, 52.94%), parietal lobe (6/17, 35.29%), and basal ganglia (5/17, 29.41%). Moreover, there were significant differences in serum sodium (P=0.0001), C-reactive protein (P=0.0124) and blood pressure (P=0.0271) between patients with and without leukoencephalopathy. After aggressive treatment, the clinical symptoms (12/17, 70.59%) and imaging lesions (11/13, 84.62%) gradually improved in most patients. Conclusions Chemotherapy is an important risk factor related to leukoencephalopathy. Although the clinical symptoms of leukoencephalopathy vary widely, there is a high degree of consistency in its radiological features. Abnormal laboratory results may also help the identification of leukoencephalopathy. Early detection and treatment can improve brain development in the long term.

Abstract
PURPOSE To review all studies providing evidence of the correlation between folinic acid (FA) rescue inadequacy and long-term cognitive damage in neuropsychological studies of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia or osteogenic sarcoma treated under protocols using high-dose methotrexate and FA rescue. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was performed of all databases of the Web of Science Citation Index, during 1990-2020, for the terms: neuropsychological, neurocognitive, and cognitive, together with acute lymphoblastic (and lymphocytic) leukemia and osteogenic sarcoma. English-language peer-reviewed articles on neuropsychological assessments of children who had been treated with high-dose methotrexate without irradiation, and which included details of methotrexate and FA schedules, were selected. In addition, a personal database of over 500 reprints of articles from over 130 journals was reviewed on the subjects of methotrexate and FA and their side effects. RESULTS Three groups of studies were found and analyzed, with (1) no evidence of cognitive deterioration, (2) evidence of cognitive deterioration, and (3) more than 1 protocol grouped together, preventing separate analysis of any protocols, Protocols without cognitive deterioration reported adequate FA rescue, and those with cognitive deterioration reported inadequate FA rescue. CONCLUSION Neuropsychological evaluation supported inadequate FA being the cause of neurocognitive damage after high-dose methotrexate and that adequate FA rescue prevents this complication.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI), termed "chemobrain", is highly prevalent in cancer patients following the administration of chemotherapeutic agents. However, the potential pathophysiological mechanisms underlying CICI remain unknown. This study aimed to explore the functional changes of the brain and associated cognitive impairment in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients receiving different chemotherapy regimen. METHODS A total of 49 NSCLC patients (25 patients receiving pemetrexed plus carboplatin chemotherapy (PeCC) and 24 patients receiving paclitaxel plus carboplatin chemotherapy (PaCC)) and 61 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited and underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scanning, as well as cognitive function tests including Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function (FACT-Cog). Brain functional activities were measured by regional homogeneity (ReHo) values, which were calculated and compared between groups. In addition, the associations between ReHo values of changed brain regions and scores of cognitive scales were evaluated. RESULTS NSCLC patients showed decreased scores of MMSE, MoCA and FACT-Cog and decreased ReHo values in the bilateral superior frontal gyrus (medial), middle frontal gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus (orbital part) and increased ReHo values in the bilateral insula and caudate. Compared with HCs, patients receiving PeCC demonstrated decreased ReHo values in the right superior frontal gyrus (dorsolateral), left superior frontal gyrus (medial orbital), middle frontal gyrus, insula and rectus gyrus while patients receiving PaCC presented increased ReHo values in the right rolandic operculum, left insula and right caudate. Compared with patients receiving PaCC, patients receiving PeCC had decreased ReHo values in the left superior frontal gyrus (orbital part), middle frontal gyrus and increased ReHo values in the left inferior temporal gyrus, lingual gyrus. Moreover, positive relationships were found between ReHo values of the left and right superior frontal gyrus (medial) and the total scores of FACT-Cog in the patient group. CONCLUSION The findings provided evidences that carboplatin-based chemotherapy could cause CICI accompanied by functional changes in the prefrontal cortex, insula, caudate. These might be the pathophysiological basis for CICI of NSCLC patients and were affected by the differences of chemotherapeutic agent administration through different biological mechanisms.

Abstract
Objective: Neuropsychological late effects of pediatric cancer may not become apparent for years after therapy; therefore, serial monitoring is necessary for detecting changes to ensure timely intervention. Unfortunately, lack of access to neuropsychologists, increased patient volume, insurance authorization and reimbursement issues, time required for neuropsychological evaluation, and practice effects related to repeat testing present many challenges to provision of neuropsychological care for survivors of childhood cancer. Models involving surveillance and monitoring have been proposed, though minimal data exist related to the implementation and feasibility of such models. Method: In this descriptive feasibility study, the Neuropsychology Consult Clinic (NCC) at Children's Hospital Los Angeles is presented, outlining a methodology and algorithm for neuropsychological surveillance of survivors of non-CNS pediatric cancer and an account of the first three years of clinic implementation. Participants included 215 survivors (x̅ age = 5.6 years), including 75.3% Latinx patients. Results: The overall clinic implementation was found to be feasible, with approximately 75% of patients "passing" the screening and 25% "failing" the screening. Clinical judgment only conflicted with the algorithm 8.6% of the time. However, several limitations to feasibility were noted, including validity concerns and ability/time to complete parent-reported outcomes using Spanish forms, as well as access to bilingual examiners. Conclusions: These preliminary data support the feasibility of the NCC model with limitations as outlined above. This is the first phase in a multiphase plan to develop an appropriate screening clinic for survivors of pediatric cancer, with the next phase focusing on sensitivity/specificity of measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Survivors of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are at increased risk of neurocognitive weakness in the areas of attention, executive function, and processing speed. Although fatigue and sleep disturbances are frequent complications of ALL therapy and associated with cognitive functions, the impact of fatigue and sleep profiles during active ALL treatment on posttreatment neurocognitive performance has received limited attention. METHODS Pediatric patients (n = 120) with ALL (diagnosed 2011-2016) who completed fatigue and sleep questionnaires at four time points during active treatment were enrolled in a study of neurocognitive performance. Latent class growth analysis identified subgroups of patients with similar sleep and fatigue profiles during treatment. Neurocognitive performance collected >6 months post treatment on 40 participants was compared between latent classes using multivariable linear regression models. RESULTS Participants (57.5% male and 79.1% Hispanic or non-Hispanic White) were classified into one of two fatigue and sleep profiles: Class 1 characterized by mild fatigue and sleep disturbances during treatment (50.8%), and Class 2 characterized by higher levels of fatigue and sleep disturbances (49.2%). Posttreatment cognitive performance was in the normal range for most measures, but significantly below normative means for executive function, verbal short-term memory, attention, and distractability measures. Compared to Class 1, Class 2 demonstrated significantly (p < .05) poorer posttreatment neurocognitive performance, particularly in measures of attention. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that fatigue and sleep disturbances during the first year of pediatric ALL therapy may impact long-term neurocognitive performance. Sleep and fatigue may be targets for intervention to preserve cognitive functioning in survivors.

Abstract
Background Long-term survivors of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia are at elevated risk for neurocognitive deficits and corresponding brain dysfunction. This study examined sex-based differences in functional neuroimaging outcomes in acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors treated with chemotherapy alone. Methods Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and neurocognitive testing were obtained in 123 survivors (46% male; median [min-max] age = 14.2 years [8.3-26.5 years]; time since diagnosis = 7.7 years [5.1-12.5 years]) treated on the St. Jude Total XV treatment protocol. Participants performed the n-back working memory task in a 3 T scanner. Functional neuroimaging data were processed (realigned, slice time corrected, normalized, smoothed) and analyzed using statistical parametric mapping with contrasts for 1-back and 2-back conditions, which reflect varying degrees of working memory and task load. Group-level fMRI contrasts were stratified by sex and adjusted for age and methotrexate exposure. Statistical tests were 2-sided (P < .05 statistical significance threshold). Results Relative to males, female survivors exhibited less activation (ie, reduced blood oxygen dependent–level signals) in the right parietal operculum, supramarginal gyrus and inferior occipital gyrus, and bilateral superior frontal medial gyrus during increased working memory load (family-wise error–corrected P = .004 to .008, adjusting for age and methotrexate dose). Female survivors were slower to correctly respond to the 2-back condition than males (P < .05), though there were no differences in overall accuracy. Performance accuracy was negatively correlated with fMRI activity in female survivors (Pearson’s r = −0.39 to −0.29, P = .001 to .02), but not in males. Conclusions These results suggest the working memory network is more impaired in female survivors than male survivors, which may contribute to ongoing functional deficits.

Abstract
Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) and CBF connectivity in the chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment of patients with lung cancer by using arterial spin labeling. Methods: Pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling perfusion magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological tests were performed for 21 patients with non-small cell lung cancer who had received chemotherapy CT (+) and 25 non-small cell lung cancer patients who need chemotherapy but did not yet received CT (-). The CT (+) group previously received platinum-based therapy for 3 months to 6 months (the time from their first chemotherapy to the MRI scan). Group comparisons were performed in the regional normalized CBF and CBF connectivity, and the relationship between the regional normalized CBF and cognitive impairment were detected. Results: The CT (+) group exhibited higher CBF in the left insula, right caudate, right superior occipital gyrus, left superior temporal gyrus (STG), and right middle frontal gyrus (MFG). MoCA scores as well as the memory scores were negatively correlated with the increased CBF in the right MFG (r = −0.492, p = 0.023; r = −0.497, p = 0.022). Alterations in the CBF connectivity were detected only in the CT (+) group between the following: right MFG and the right precentral gyrus; the right caudate and the right lingual gyrus; right caudate and right precuneus; left STG and the bilateral MFG; and the left STG and the right middle cingulum. Conclusion: These findings indicated that chemotherapy is associated with abnormalities in the CBF and connectivity alterations, which may contribute to the cognitive impairment in patients with lung cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) is used in the treatment of different childhood cancers, including leukemia, the most common cancer type and is commonly defined as an intravenous dose of at least 1 g/m2 body surface area per application. A systematic review on late effects on different organs due to HD-MTX is lacking. METHOD We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, including studies published in English or German between 1985 and 2020. The population of each study had to consist of at least 75% childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) who had completed the cancer treatment at least twelve months before late effects were assessed and who had received HD-MTX. The literature search was not restricted to specific cancer diagnosis or organ systems at risk for late effects. We excluded case reports, case series, commentaries, editorial letters, poster abstracts, narrative reviews and studies only reporting prevalence of late effects. We followed PRISMA guidelines, assessed the quality of the eligible studies according to GRADE criteria and registered the protocol on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42020212262). RESULTS We included 15 out of 1731 identified studies. Most studies included CCSs diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (n = 12). The included studies investigated late effects of HD-MTX on central nervous system (n = 10), renal (n = 2) and bone health (n = 3). Nine studies showed adverse outcomes in neuropsychological testing in exposed compared to non-exposed CCSs, healthy controls or reference values. No study revealed lower bone density or worse renal function in exposed CCSs. As a limitation, the overall quality of the studies per organ system was low to very low, mainly due to selection bias, missing adjustment for important confounders and low precision. CONCLUSIONS CCSs treated with HD-MTX might benefit from neuropsychological testing, to intervene early in case of abnormal results. Methodological shortcomings and heterogeneity of the tests used made it impossible to determine the most appropriate test. Based on the few studies on renal function and bone health, regular screening for dysfunction seems not to be justified. Only screening for neurocognitive late effects is warranted in CCSs treated with HD-MTX.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is associated with cognitive impairment in adulthood. Cognitive interference processing and its correlated functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activity in the brain have not yet been studied in this patient group. MATERIAL Twenty-six adult childhood ALL survivors (median [interquartile range {IQR}] age, 40.0 [37.0-42.3] years) were investigated at median age (IQR), 35.0 (32.0-37.0) years after treatment with intrathecal and intravenous chemotherapy as well as cranial radiotherapy (24 Gy) and compared with 26 matched controls (median [IQR] age, 37.5 [33.0-41.5] years). METHODS Cognitive interference processing was investigated in terms of behavioral performance (response times [ms] and accuracy performance [%]) and fMRI activity in the cingulo-fronto-parietal (CFP) attention network as well as other parts of the brain using the multisource interference task (MSIT). RESULTS ALL survivors had longer response times and reduced accuracy performance during cognitive interference processing (median [IQR] interference effect, 371.9 [314.7-453.3] ms and 6.7 [4.2-14.7]%, respectively) comparedwith controls (303.7 [275.0-376.7] ms and 2.3 [1.6-4.3]%, respectively), but did not exhibit altered fMRI activity in the CFP attention network or elsewhere in the brain. CONCLUSION Adult childhood ALL survivors demonstrated impaired behavioral performance but no altered fMRI activity when performing cognitive interference processing when compared with controls. The results can be used to better characterize this patient group and to optimize follow-up care and support for these individuals.

Abstract
Chemotherapy, the main treatment method of AL, can produce varying degrees of toxic and side effects on patients while killing tumor cells, resulting in decreased immune function of patients. We aim to explore the application effect of high-quality nursing intervention based on humanistic care combined with the project teaching method on patients with acute leukemia (AL) undergoing chemotherapy and its effect on their psychological state and satisfaction. 114 AL patients undergoing chemotherapy in the Department of Hematology of our hospital from July 2018 to July 2020 were chosen as the research objects and equally randomized into the experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). CG received routine nursing during chemotherapy, while EG received high-quality nursing intervention based on humanistic care combined with the project teaching method. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) was adopted to evaluate the psychological state of patients in both groups after intervention, and the self-made nursing satisfaction questionnaire in our hospital was applied to evaluate the clinical nursing satisfaction. The HAD-A and HAD-D scores in the CG (P < 0.001) were significantly higher than the HAD-A and HAD-D scores in the EG after intervention. The scores of various coping styles in the EG after intervention were better than those in the CG (P < 0.05). Compared with the CG, the total nursing satisfaction after intervention was remarkably higher in the EG (P < 0.001), while the total incidence of adverse reactions during intervention was notably lower (P < 0.05). High-quality nursing intervention based on humanistic care combined with the project teaching method for AL patients undergoing chemotherapy can effectively relieve negative emotions, improve clinical nursing satisfaction, and reduce adverse reactions during chemotherapy.

Abstract
Neurocognitive function (NCF) deficits are common in patients with brain metastases, occurring in up to 90% of cases. NCF deficits may be caused by tumor-related factors and/or treatment for the metastasis, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. In recent years, strategies to prevent negative impact of treatments and ameliorate cognitive deficits for patients with brain tumors have gained momentum. In this review, we report on research that has established the efficacy of preventative and rehabilitative therapies for NCF deficits in patients with brain metastases. Surgical strategies include the use of laser interstitial thermal therapy and intraoperative mapping. Radiotherapy approaches include focal treatments such as stereotactic radiosurgery and tailored approaches such as hippocampal avoidant whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT). Pharmacologic options include use of the neuroprotectant memantine to reduce cognitive decline induced by WBRT and incorporation of medications traditionally used for attention and memory problems. Integration of neuropsychology into the care of patients with brain metastases helps characterize cognitive patterns, educate patients and families regarding their management, and guide rehabilitative therapies. These and other strategies will become even more important for long-term survivors of brain metastases as treatment options improve.

Abstract
Background The effect of chemotherapy on brain development in long-term survivors of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) was systematically reviewed. Methods A systematic search of Pubmed, Scopus, and PsycINFO databases was conducted to identify articles published between January 2000 and February 2020 that implemented magnetic resonance imaging to assess brain structure and function in pediatric ALL survivors (diagnosed younger than 21 years of age). The review included articles that were published on children diagnosed with ALL between 0 and 21 years of age and treated with chemotherapy-only protocols. Articles meeting the inclusion criteria described survivors on average of 5 years or more from diagnosis and were peer-reviewed articles and original studies. Results The search yielded 1975 articles with 23 articles meeting inclusion criteria. The review revealed that survivors had statistically significant alterations in brain anatomy, most commonly a smaller hippocampus and impaired microstructural white matter integrity in frontal brain regions. Survivors also had impaired brain function including lower brain network efficiency and altered resting state connectivity. Survivors also displayed widespread reductions in brain activation (ie, frontal, temporal, parietal brain regions) during cognitive tasks. Conclusion Although the neurotoxic effects of cancer treatment are reduced in the absence of cranial radiation, survivors treated on chemotherapy-only protocols still display long-term alterations in brain structure and function, which contribute to lifelong neurocognitive late effects.

Abstract
Survival rates of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have improved greatly due to advanced therapies and supportive care. Intrathecal chemotherapy replaced cranial radiation due to radiation-induced neurotoxicity and late-effects. Survivors treated with chemotherapy-only experience neurologic and cognitive problems following cessation of treatment. Very long-term cognitive outcomes remain unclear. Animal models are being generated to assess late-effects of chemotherapy on cognitive function. Although, few address juvenile models of chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) and developing brain, results of this review outline neurocognitive effects of chemotherapy consistent with childhood ALL therapy. Studies demonstrate deficits across cognitive domains including spatial memory, executive function, short-term memory, anxiety and depression. Inflammation, oxidative stress, excitotoxity, and other metabolic disruptions may lead to neurodegeneration associated with cognitive impairment observed in ALL survivors. Interventions directly targeting these mechanisms may prevent and/or promote recovery of cognitive function and improve long-term outcomes. Evidence suggests success of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant treatments in reducing cognitive decline. Animal models provide basis for assessing effects of chemotherapy on neurologic processes to guide future clinical investigations.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition affecting behavior and communication, presenting with extremely different clinical phenotypes and features. ASD etiology is composite and multifaceted with several causes and risk factors responsible for different individual disease pathophysiological processes and clinical phenotypes. From a genetic and epigenetic side, several candidate genes have been reported as potentially linked to ASD, which can be detected in about 10–25% of patients. Folate gene polymorphisms have been previously associated with other psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, mainly focused on gene variants in the DHFR gene (5q14.1; rs70991108, 19bp ins/del), MTHFR gene (1p36.22; rs1801133, C677T and rs1801131, A1298C), and CBS gene (21q22.3; rs876657421, 844ins68). Of note, their roles have been scarcely investigated from a sex/gender viewpoint, though ASD is characterized by a strong sex gap in onset-risk and progression. The aim of the present review is to point out the molecular mechanisms related to intracellular folate recycling affecting in turn remethylation and transsulfuration pathways having potential effects on ASD. Brain epigenome during fetal life necessarily reflects the sex-dependent different imprint of the genome-environment interactions which effects are difficult to decrypt. Abstract
Childhood cancer and its treatment puts survivors at risk of low working memory capacity. Working memory represents a core cognitive function, which is crucial in daily life and academic tasks. The aim of this functional MRI (fMRI) study was to examine the working memory network of survivors of childhood cancer without central nervous system (CNS) involvement and its relation to cognitive performance. Thirty survivors (aged 7-16 years, ≥ 1 year after cancer treatment) and 30 healthy controls performed a visuospatial working memory task during MRI, including a low- and a high-demand condition. Working memory performance was assessed using standardized tests outside the scanner. When cognitive demands increased, survivors performed worse than controls and showed evidence for slightly atypical working memory-related activation. The survivor group exhibited hyperactivation in the right-hemispheric superior parietal lobe (SPL) in the high- compared to the low-demand working memory condition, while maintaining their performance levels. Hyperactivation in the right SPL coincided with poorer working memory performance outside the scanner in survivors. Abstract
Cognitive impairment is frequent in pediatric cancer, and behavioral and psychological disturbances often also affect children who have survived cancer problems. Furthermore, pediatric tumors are also often associated with sleep disorders. The interrelationship between sleep disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders and pediatric cancer, however, is still largely unexplored. In this narrative review we approach this important aspect by first considering studies on pediatric cancer as a possible cause of neurodevelopmental disorders and then describing pediatric cancer occurring as a comorbid condition in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Finally, we discuss the role of sleep disorders in children with cancer and neurodevelopmental disorders. Even if the specific literature approaching directly the topic of the role of sleep in the complex relationship between pediatric cancer and neurodevelopmental disorders was found to be scarce, the available evidence supports the idea that in-depth knowledge and correct management of sleep disorders can definitely improve the health and quality of life of children with cancer and of their families.

Abstract
Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in children. Although the survival rate has increased dramatically over the last decades, patients struggle with the adverse side effects of treatment. Treatment for ALL includes chemotherapy and irradiation - both of which are linked to cognitive impairments and alterations in central nervous system (CNS) structure and function detected by neuroimaging and in neurocognitive studies. The present article is a meta-analysis of the existing evidence for the mechanisms underlying changes in the CNS and neurocognitive function in ALL survivors after treatment. We found that compared with controls, ALL survivors develop: (i) cognitive sequelae in intelligence, academics, attention, memory, processing speed and executive function domains; (ii) decreased grey and white matter volume in cortical and several subcortical brain regions, with functional changes particularly in frontal regions and the hippocampus; (iii) neurocognitive impairments related to CNS changes; and (iv) reduction, but not resolution, of late neurocognitive sequelae in patients in whom prophylactic irradiation was replaced by systemic/intrathecal chemotherapy. Continued work with advanced functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques will hopefully allow the detection of early CNS changes as biomarkers to help guide early diagnosis and intervention for neurocognitive defects in patients with childhood ALL.
