Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Fasting, orthorexia nervosa, and eating disorders are increasingly prevalent and interconnected. Understanding their relationship is essential for identifying potential risks and developing effective prevention and intervention strategies. This study investigated these associations to enhance our knowledge of their interplay and implications for mental health. METHODS A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in Poland in 2023. A sample of 214 participants aged 16 to 65 (M = 27.95, SD = 9.44) participated in this study. Fasting behavior was the predictor (independent) variable, orthorexia nervosa (measured using the Authorized Bratman Orthorexia Self-Test) was the mediator, and an eating disorder was the dependent variable (assessed using the Eating Attitude Test). RESULTS The Mann-Whitney U-test indicated that the fasting group scored higher in orthorexia and eating disorder symptoms than the non-fasting sample. Positive associations emerged between the fasting, orthorexia, and eating disorder scales. Linear regression analysis identified significant predictors of eating disorder symptoms, such as age, fasting, dieting, overweight status, and orthorexia. A path analysis revealed that fasting affected eating disorders directly and indirectly through orthorexia. CONCLUSIONS This study identified fasting as a risk factor for orthorexia and other eating disorders, with orthorexia fully mediating the fasting-eating disorder relationship. Clinicians should consider both fasting and orthorexia when assessing patients at risk for eating disorders. This paper also proposes possible intervention and treatment strategies for affected individuals.

Abstract
The purpose of our study was to use recent nationally-representative data to 1) determine whether reported adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) were associated with individual disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) for the US- based early and middle adolescent population; and 2) the extent to which individual ACE categories were associated with DEBs for this population. The study used cross-sectional data from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health, which used parent-reported data. Inclusion criteria included all early (10-13 years of age) and middle-aged adolescents (14-17 years of age) (n = 24,173). Multiple logistic regressions were used to test the association between ACEs and DEBs while controlling for covariates. Both categories for ACEs (i.e. 1-2 ACEs and 3+ ACEs) exhibited a statistically significant association with three specific DEBs: skipping meals or fasting, low interest in food, and binge eating. Additionally, six of the seven ACE categories exhibited a statistically significant association with DEBs which included parent or guardian divorced, parent or guardian time in jail, adults slap, hit, kick, punch others, victim of violence, lived with mentally ill, and lived with person with alcohol/drug problem. Further studies are needed to examine mechanisms contributing to the increased risk of DEBs among those with ACE exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Converging evidence points to the crucial role of brain connectivity involved in aberrant behavioral control and reward reactivity in the onset and maintenance of binge eating. However, the directional interaction pattern between brain's reward and inhibitory control systems in people with binge eating episodes is largely unknown. METHODS Resting-state fMRI data were collected from 36 adults with binge eating episodes (age: 19.05 ± 0.90) and 36 well-matched controls (age: 18.88 ± 0.78). We applied spectral dynamic causal modeling approach to estimate effective connectivity of the executive control network (ECN) and reward network (RN) with 15 predefined regions of interest, and investigate the between-group differences in directional connectivity. RESULTS Compared with controls, the positive connections within the ECN were significantly strengthened in individuals with binge eating episodes, while the negative connections from the ECN to RN and from the RN to ECN were significantly weakened. In adults with binge eating episodes, the RN→ECN connectivity was positively related to binge frequency even controlling for age, sex, and body mass index. CONCLUSION This study represents an important first step in addressing the role of directional integration between reward and inhibitory control networks in binge eating, and provides novel evidence that the ability of people with binge eating episodes to maintain a balance between inhibitory control and reward reactivity is decreased, as reflected by diminished bidirectional negative effects of prefrontal-subcortical circuitry at rest.

Abstract
PURPOSE As a maladaptive disordered eating behavior, binge eating (BE) onset has been reported in children as young as eight years old and is linked with a range of negative psychological consequences. However, previous neuroimaging research of BE has mainly focused on adults in clinical conditions, and little is known about the potential neurostructural and neurofunctional bases of BE in healthy children. METHODS In this study, we examined these issues in 76 primary school students (mean age = 9.86 years) using voxel-based morphometry and resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) approaches. RESULTS After controlling for age, sex, and total intracranial volume/head motion, we observed that higher levels of BE were correlated with greater gray matter volumes (GMV) in the left fusiform and right insula and weaker rsFC between the right insula and following three regions: right orbital frontal cortex, left cingulate gyrus, and left superior frontal gyrus. No significant associations were observed between BE and regional white matter volume. Significant sex differences were found only in the relationship between BE and GMV in the left fusiform. Furthermore, the GMV- and rsFC-based predictive models (a machine-learning method) achieved significant correlations between the actual and predicted BE values, demonstrating the robustness of our findings. CONCLUSION The present study provides novel evidence for the brain structural and functional substrates of children's BE, and further reveals that the weakened communication between core regions associated with negative affectivity, reward responsivity, and executive function is strongly related to dysregulated eating. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although maladaptive exercise (ME) is widely recognized as a clinical feature in transdiagnostic eating disorders, less is known about psychosocial factors that give rise to and perpetuate this behavior. This systematic review aimed to examine the empirical status of this association. METHOD We reviewed 46 full text articles examining longitudinal associations between psychosocial variables and ME. RESULTS Eighteen studies met full inclusion criteria. Based on our qualitative synthesis, evidence suggests reasonably consistent associations between early concern with weight and shape, and negative affect on later development of ME. DISCUSSION Inconsistent and insufficient assessment of ME across a majority of studies underscores caution in interpretation of results, but guides important discussion for future clinical and research efforts.

Abstract
Psychiatric comorbidities are prevalent in youth eating disorders. In a sample of 1,906 youth from the United States (49.2% female), followed from elementary school into high school, we found support for a model to help explain this comorbidity. Endorsement of binge eating in fifth grade (elementary school) predicted increases in negative urgency, negative affect, and lack of planning in seventh grade (middle school). In turn, seventh grade negative urgency predicted increases in 10th grade (high school) externalizing dysfunction (binge eating, alcohol use problems, and smoking) and internalizing dysfunction (depressive symptoms). Seventh grade negative affect predicted increases in 10th grade binge eating and depressive symptoms. Seventh grade lack of planning predicted increases only in 10th grade externalizing behaviours. Early engagement in binge eating may elevate risk for multiple forms of dysfunction, at least in part due to its prediction of high-risk personality change in middle school.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Binge eating, the transdiagnostic risk associated with depression, and the eating disorder-specific risk associated with expectancies for reinforcement from thinness have been identified as risk factors for the development of weight control behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine if these risk factors transact to further predict risk in youth. METHOD Binge eating, depressive symptoms, thinness expectancies, and weight control behaviors were assessed in 1,758 adolescents three times during the transitional period between middle school and high school. We tested six different possible transactional processes. RESULTS Mediation tests demonstrated that both 8th grade binge eating and 8th grade depressive symptoms predicted 10th grade weight control behaviors through their predictive influence on thinness expectancies in 9th grade. However, our results were not consistent with a mediational process in which 8th grade thinness expectancies predicted 9th grade depression to further predict 10th grade weight control behaviors. No interactions among binge eating, depressive symptoms, or thinness expectancies predicted weight control. Results did not differ between girls and boys. DISCUSSION Thinness expectancies appear to mediate the predictive influence of binge eating and depressive symptoms on risk for engaging in weight control behaviors. These results add to theoretical understanding of risk and suggests potential intervention pathways for clinicians.

Abstract
Binge eating and purging behaviors are associated with significant harm and distress among adolescents. The process by which these behaviors develop (often in the high school years) is not fully understood. We tested the Acquired Preparedness (AP) model of risk involving transactions among biological, personality, and psychosocial factors to predict binge eating and purging behavior in a sample of 1,906 children assessed in the spring of 5th grade (the last year of elementary school), the fall of 6th grade (the first year of middle school), spring of 6th grade, and spring of 10th grade (second year of high school). Pubertal onset in spring of 5th grade predicted increases in negative urgency, but not negative affect, in the fall of 6th grade. Negative urgency in the fall of 6th grade predicted increases in expectancies for reinforcement from eating in the spring of 6th grade, which in turn predicted increases in binge eating behavior in the spring of 10th grade. Negative affect in the fall of 6th grade predicted increases in thinness expectancies in the spring of 6th grade, which in turn predicted increases in purging in the spring of 10th grade. Results demonstrate similarities and differences in the development of these two different bulimic behaviors. Intervention efforts targeting the risk factors evident in this model may prove fruitful in the treatment of eating disorders characterized by binge eating and purging. (PsycINFO Database Record
