Abstract
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) could be a risk factor for the development of preterm neonates due to the stressful procedures they undergo. Stress-related behaviors must be managed through environmental strategies that support regulating the neonates' biobehavioural system to minimize the negative impact on their development. The study aimed to compare the NICU environment's stressful procedures and developmental care strategies and the stress and self-regulation behaviors of preterm neonates in groups differentiated by the NICU environmental design. The sample comprised 20 preterm neonates hospitalized in a NICU with an open-bay model (OB NICU) and 20 preterm neonates hospitalized in a single-family room model (SFR NICU). The stressful procedures were assessed by the Neonatal Infant Stressor Scale (NISS). The developmental care strategies and the preterm neonates' stress and self-regulation behaviors were assessed using a structured observational protocol. The between-group comparison was performed by the Mann-Whitney test, and the significance level was set at 5%. Both NICUs had similar stressful procedures and developmental care approaches. However, the preterm neonates hospitalized in the SFR NICU exhibited significantly fewer total stress behaviors, and specifically in the motor system, compared to those in the OB NICU. Additionally, the preterm neonates hospitalized in the SFR NICU exhibited significantly more total self-regulation behaviors, and specifically in the behavioral state system, compared to those in the OB NICU. The findings showed that the single-family room NICU model was consistent with the environmental protection of biobehavioural regulation in preterm neonates hospitalized in the NICU.

Abstract
Aim The aim of research was to study the relationship between the stress experienced by preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and developmental status in the follow up, and to establish factors, associated with their neurodevelopment. Methods The first stage of research involved measuring stress markers (cortisol, melatonin) in infants (n = 56) during their NICU stay; the second phase assessed the developmental status at the corrected age of 24-30 months. Results The total ASQ-3 score, communication, problem solving, and personal-social skills scores at the corrected age of 24-30 months were positively correlated with melatonin level determined in the neonatal period (r = 0.31, p = 0.026; r = 0.36, p = 0.009; r = 0.30, p = 0.033, and r = 0.32; p = 0.022 respectively). In the same time, ASQ-3 communication and personal-social scores were negatively correlated with cortisol level (r = -0.31, p = 0.043; r = -0.35, p = 0.022). The ROC-curve analysis revealed that a decrease of melatonin below 3.44 ng/mL and 3.71 ng/mL during the neonatal period could predict communication and problem-solving delay, respectively. An increase in cortisol above 0.64 mcg/dl is predictive in personal-social delay. Negative correlation was identified between the NICU and total hospital stay duration and ASQ-3 communication scores in the follow-up (r = -0.27; p = 0.049 and r = -0.41; p = 0.002, respectively). The duration of mechanical ventilation was negatively correlated with gross motor scores (r = -0.46; p = 0.043). Apgar score was positively correlated with ASQ-3 communication (r = 0.29; p = 0.032) and personal-social scores (r = 0.28; p = 0.034); maternal age-with ASQ-3 total (r = 0.29; p = 0.034), communication (r = 0.37; p = 0.006), and personal-social scores (r = 0.29; p = 0.041). Positive correlations were observed between gestational age and communication scores (r = 0.28; p = 0.033). Infants who suffered neonatal sepsis had significantly often delay of communication (p = 0.014) and gross motor skills (p = 0.016). Children who required mechanical ventilation were more likely to have communication delay (p = 0.034). Conclusion Developmental outcomes in preterm infants at the corrected age of 24-30 months were associated with neonatal stress. Correlations between the communication, problem-solving and personal-social development in the follow up and cortisol and melatonin levels determined in the neonatal period supported this evidence. Factors as low gestational age, duration of hospital and NICU stay, mechanical ventilation, and sepsis were associated with more frequent delays in communication, gross motor and problems-solving skills.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premature infants are inevitably exposed to painful events, including repetitive procedures, inflammation, or mixed stimulation that may induce long-term behavioral outcomes. Here, we set up three neonatal painful models to investigate their long-term effect on somatosensation and cognition. METHODS Three types of neonatal pain models in rat were set up. Rat pups were randomly assigned to four groups. The needling pain (NP) group received repetitive needle pricks on the paws from the day of birth (PD0) to postnatal day 7 (PD7) to mimic the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The inflammatory pain (IP) group received the injection of carrageenan into the left hindpaw at PD3 to induce IP in peripheral tissues. The mixed pain group received a combination of the NP and IP (NIP). The control (CON) group was untreated. We performed behavioral and biochemical testing of juvenile rats (PD21-PD26). RESULTS The NIP group showed a longer hypersensitivity than the NP group, when given a secondary inflammatory stimulation. NP led to insensitivity to anxiety-causing stimuli and impairment of fear memory both aggravated by NIP. NP reduced the expression of synapse-related molecules (GluN1/PSD95/GFAP) in the medial prefrontal cortex, and NIP exacerbated this decrease. The corticosterone secretion in the NIP group increased after the behavioral task, compared with those in other three groups. CONCLUSION A combination of NP with inflammation occurring in the neonatal period might aggravate the adverse effects of each on somatosensory and cognitive development of rats, the mechanism of which might be associated with the increase of corticosterone secretion and the dysregulation of synaptic molecules.

Abstract
Children born after threatened preterm labour (TPL), regardless of whether it ends in preterm birth, may represent an undescribed "ADHD cluster". The aim of this cohort study is to identify early temperament and psychomotor manifestations and risk factors of TPL children who present ADHD symptoms. One hundred and seventeen mother-child pairs were followed from TPL diagnosis until the child's 6 years of life. TPL children were divided according to the prematurity status into three groups: full-term TPL (n = 26), late-preterm TPL (n = 53), and very-preterm TPL (n = 38). A non-TPL group (n = 50) served as control. Temperament and psychomotor development at age 6 months and ADHD symptoms at age 6 years were assessed. Perinatal and psychosocial factors were also recorded. All TPL groups showed higher severity of ADHD symptoms compared with non-TPL children (difference in means + 4.19 for the full-term group, + 3.64 for the late-preterm group, and + 4.99 for the very-preterm group, all ps < 0.021). Concretely, very-preterm and late-preterm TPL children showed higher restless/impulsive behaviours, whereas full-term TPL children showed higher emotional lability behaviours. Higher surgency/extraversion and delayed fine motor skills at age 6 months predicted ADHD symptoms at 6 years in TPL children. Male sex, maternal state anxiety symptoms at TPL diagnosis, low parental education, and past maternal experience of traumatic events predicted higher ADHD symptoms in TPL children. Therefore, TPL children may have a higher risk for developing ADHD symptoms, presenting a phenotype that depends on the prematurity status. Moreover, the specific combination of early manifestations and risk factors suggests that TPL children may conform an undescribed group at-risk of ADHD symptoms.

Abstract
The aim of the present longitudinal study was to examine the effect of preterm childbirth, acute neonatal stress, and child behavior at 18-36 months of age on later behavior outcomes in 4-5-year-old children. The sample comprised of 70 children who were born preterm. The neonatal characteristics of children were assessed during hospitalization by reviewing their medical records and utilizing the Neonatal Infant Stressor Scale. Behavior problems were evaluated by the maternal-report in the Child Behavior Checklist 1½-5 years. A multiple linear regression analysis was conducted. Also, the repeated measures analysis of variance and the McNemar test for paired samples were performed. Daily exposure of the infants to high neonatal acute stress during NICU hospitalization and more behavior problems at 18-36 months of age was associated with more total and externalizing behavior problems at 4-5 years of age. Lower gestational age at childbirth and more internalizing behavior problems at 18-36 months was associated with more internalizing problems at 4-5 years old. The present study showed the combination of predictors of neonatal conditions and behavioral problems at childhood, highlighting the relevance of the implementation of developmental care in the NICU and follow-up the preterm infants after discharge programs.

Abstract
Altered body composition in preterm infants is associated with risks to cognitive development, but the effect specific to prefrontal cortex (PFC) development is unknown. We were interested in the impact of fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM) gains out to 4 months corrected gestational age (CGA) on PFC development, as indexed by working memory and temperament. This is a prospective observational pilot study recruiting 100 preterm (<33 weeks gestation), appropriate for gestational age, and very low birth weight infants, of which 49 infants met inclusion criteria. Body composition was measured using air displacement plethysmography at hospital discharge and 4 months CGA. Questionnaire based temperament assessments were completed at 12 and 24 months CGA and a working memory assessment was completed at 24 months CGA. Associations between developmental tests and body composition obtained at term and 4 months were analyzed. Increased FM at discharge was associated with increased fear and decreased soothability at 12 months. Increased FM at 4 months was associated with increased activity level, increased distress from limitations at 12 months and decreased attentional shifting, decreased frustration, and decreased inhibitory control at 24 months. Increased FFM at 4 months was associated with increased activity level at 12 months and increased impulsivity and decreased low intensity pleasure at 24 months. In this exploratory pilot study, increased FM out to 4 months and increased FFM after discharge are associated with negative markers of infant temperament. Infant temperament may be sensitive to body composition status at least to 4 months CGA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An episode of suspected preterm labor may be by itself a pathologic event that may alter the normal course of pregnancy and the offspring's neurodevelopment. Certainly, the association between preterm birth and neurodevelopmental disorders can only be partially explained by the immaturity of the nervous system, as evidenced by the increased risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in late-preterm infants without any neurologic alteration. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine whether infants born after suspected preterm labor may be at an increased risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Moreover, potential obstetrical, perinatal, and psychosocial risk factors associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in this population are examined. STUDY DESIGN A prospective cohort study of 120 mother-infant pairs was conducted from the moment the mothers received a diagnosis of suspected preterm labor until the infants' 30 months of life. Infants were divided according to the prematurity status: full-term infants born after a suspected preterm labor (n=28; born at ≥37 weeks of gestation), late-preterm infants (n=56; born between 32 and <37 weeks of gestation), very-preterm infants (n=36; born before <32 weeks of gestation). At-term infants born without obstetric complications served as a control group (n=46). Infants' attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms were assessed at the age of 30 months. Furthermore, obstetrical, perinatal, and psychosocial risk factors were recorded. RESULTS All groups of infants born after a suspected preterm labor showed more attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms at the age of 30 months than the control group. Concretely, very-preterm infants showed higher restless or impulsive behaviors, whereas full-term infants born after a suspected preterm labor and late-preterm infants showed higher emotional lability behaviors. Among potential risk factors, male sex and maternal experience of posttraumatic stress symptoms predicted the severity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms in infants born after a suspected preterm labor. CONCLUSION Infants born after a suspected preterm labor had a higher risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms, including those born at term. Infants born after a suspected preterm labor showed a distinctive phenotype and shared specific risk factors suggesting that they conform an undescribed population at risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Abstract
Studies on preterm infants usually exclude high-risk neonatal infants with neurological problems. However, it is important to study high-risk preterm infants to better understand later developmental problems. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to compare the cognitive, motor, language, and social-emotional development of high-risk preterm (PT) infants with infants born full-term (FT) with no biological vulnerabilities during early development (up to the first 15 months of age). The sample comprised 133 infants (54 born PT and 79 born FT) assessed in independent subsamples at 6-8 and 12-15 months of age, considering the corrected age for prematurity in the PT infants. Infant development (cognitive, motor, language, and social-emotional) was evaluated using the Bayley-III Scales. Medical charts were reviewed to obtain the clinical history. A multivariate analysis of variance and analysis of variance tests were performed to examine the differences between groups related to infant developmental indicators, controlling for age and socioeconomic variables. Although the PT infants performed significantly more poorly than their FT counterparts, the scores of the PT group were still within the normal range on all Bayley-III domains (cognitive, language, motor, and social-emotional) than their FT counterparts. The findings of the present study provide a better understanding of the developmental prognosis of high-risk PT infants and extend support for preventive intervention programs to improve early childhood development.

Abstract
Neonatal repetitive noxious stimuli (RNS) has been shown to cause long-term harmful effects on nociceptive processing, learning, and memory which persist until adulthood. Plasticity-related gene 1 (PRG-1) regulates synaptic plasticity and functional reorganization in the brain during neuronal development. In this study, neonatal RNS rats were established by repetitive needle pricks to neonatal rats on all four feet to model repetitive pain exposure in infants. Neonatal RNS caused thermal hyperalgesia, mechanical allodynia, learning, and memory impairments which manifested in young rats and persisted until adulthood. Hippocampal PRG-1/N-ethylmaleimide sensitive fusion protein (NSF) interaction was determined to be responsible for the RNS-induced impairment via enhanced extracellular glutamate release and AMPAR GluR2 trafficking deficiency in a cell-autonomous manner. These pathways likely act synergistically to cause changes in dendritic spine density. Our findings suggest that PRG-1 prevents the RNS-induced hyperalgesia, learning, and memory impairment by regulating synaptic plasticity via NSF/Glu/GluR2 signaling. Neonatal RNS induced hyperalgesia, learning, and memory impairment until adulthood. PRG-1 attenuated RNS-induced impairments by dendritic spine regulation. PRG-1 prevents RNS-induced impairments via NSF/Glu/GluR2 signaling.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate which early neurocognitive and behavioral precursors are associated with the development of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and whether these are currently targeted in early interventions. METHOD We conducted 2 systematic reviews and meta-analyses of empirical studies to examine the following: (1) early-life (0-5 years) neurocognitive and behavioral precursors associated with familial likelihood for ADHD, an early ADHD diagnosis/elevated ADHD symptoms, and/or the presence of later-childhood ADHD; and (2) interventions delivered to children aged 0 to 5 years targeting the identified precursors or measuring these as outcomes. Standardized mean differences (Hedges' g) and pre-post-treatment change scores (SMD) were computed. RESULTS A total of 149 studies (165,095 participants) investigating 8 neurocognitive and behavioral domains met inclusion criteria for part 1. Multi-level random-effects meta-analyses on 136 studies revealed significant associations between ADHD and poorer cognitive (g = -0.46 [95% CIs: -0.59, -0.33]), motor (g = -0.35 [CIs: -0.48, -0.21]) and language (g = -0.43 [CIs: -0.66, -0.19]) development, social (g = 0.23 [CIs: 0.03, 0.43]) and emotional (g = 0.46 [CIs: 0.33, 0.58]) difficulties, early regulatory (g = 0.30 [CIs: 0.18, 0.43]) and sleep (g = 0.29 [CIs: 0.14, 0.44]) problems, sensory atypicalities (g = 0.52 [CIs: 0.16, 0.88]), elevated activity levels (g = 0.54 [CIs: 0.37, 0.72]), and executive function difficulties (g = 0.34 [CIs: 0.05, 0.64] to -0.87 [CIs: -1.35, -0.40]). A total of 32 trials (28 randomized, 4 nonrandomized, 3,848 participants) testing early interventions that targeted the identified precursors met inclusion criteria for part 2. Multi-level random-effects meta-analyses on 22 studies revealed significant intervention-related improvements in ADHD symptoms (SMD = 0.43 [CIs: 0.22, 0.64]) and working memory (SMD = 0.37 [CIs: 0.06, 0.69]). CONCLUSION Children aged 0 to 5 years with current or later-emerging ADHD are likely to experience difficulties in multiple neurocognitive/behavioral functions. Early interventions show some effectiveness in reducing ADHD symptoms, but their effects on neurocognitive/behavioral difficulties require further study.

Abstract
Postpartum depression is more prevalent in mothers and fathers of preterm infants compared to parents of full-term infants and may have long-term detrimental consequences for parental mental health and child development. The temperamental profile of an infant has been postulated as one of the important factors associated with parental depressiveness in the first months postpartum. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship between depressive symptoms and perceived infant temperament at 3 months corrected age, and depressive symptoms at 6 months corrected age among mothers and fathers of infants born preterm. We assessed 59 families with infants born before the 34th gestational week using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EDPS) and the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised. We found that mothers' scores on EPDS and infants' Orienting/regulation at 3 months corrected age predicted mothers' EPDS scores at 6 months corrected age. In particular, higher depressive scores were related to higher depressive symptoms at 6 months corrected age, whereas higher infant Orienting/regulation was related to lower depressive symptoms at 6 months corrected age. Due to the low internal consistency of EPDS at 6 months for fathers, we were unable to conduct similar analyses for fathers. Our results point to the importance of considering both early indices of maternal mood as well as mother-reported measures of preterm infant temperament in the attempts to predict levels of maternal depressiveness in later months of an infant's life. Further studies are urgently needed in order to better understand the associations between depressiveness and infant temperament in fathers, and with more consideration for the severity of the effects of infant prematurity.

Abstract
Critical for organismal survival, pain evokes strong physiological and behavioral responses in various sentient species. Clinical and preclinical (animal) studies markedly increase our understanding of biological consequences of developmental (early-life) adversity, as well as acute and chronic pain. However, the long-term effects of early-life pain exposure on human and animal emotional responses remain poorly understood. Here, we discuss experimental models of nociception in rodents and zebrafish, and summarize mounting evidence of the role of early-life pain in shaping emotional traits later in life. We also call for further development of animal models to probe the impact of early-life pain exposure on behavioral traits, brain disorders and novel therapeutic treatments.

Abstract
CONTEXT An overview of the full range of neonatal stressors and the associated clinical, laboratory, and imaging outcomes regarding infants' health and development may contribute to the improvement of neonatal care. OBJECTIVE To systematically review existing literature on the associations between all kinds of neonatal stressors and the health and development of preterm infants. DATA SOURCES Data sources included Embase, Medline, PsycINFO, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and reference lists. STUDY SELECTION Studies were eligible if they included a measure of neonatal stress during the NICU stay, reported clinical, laboratory, and/or imaging outcomes regarding health and/or development on discharge from the NICU or thereafter, included preterm infants, and were written in English or Dutch. DATA EXTRACTION Two reviewers independently screened the sources and extracted data on health and development. Study quality was assessed by using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. RESULTS We identified 20 articles that reported on neonatal stress associated negatively with clinical outcomes, including cognitive, motor, and emotional development, and laboratory and imaging outcomes, including epigenetic alterations, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis functioning, and structural brain development. We found no evidence regarding associations with growth, cardiovascular health, parent-infant interaction, the neonatal immune system, and the neonatal microbiome. LIMITATIONS The studies were all observational and used different definitions of neonatal stress. CONCLUSIONS Neonatal stress has a profound impact on the health and development of preterm infants, and physicians involved in their treatment and follow-up should be aware of this fact.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Procedural pain is underestimated in hospitalized preterm infants. The aim of this study was to assess the reliability, validity, and clinical utility of the Neonatal Facial Coding System (NFCS), Douleur Aiguë du Nouveau-né (DAN) scale, Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS), and Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP) in premature infants undergoing heel blood collection. We assume that the four scales were similar in reliablility and validity (but different in clinical utility). METHODS The pain assessments were performed on 111 premature infants using the four scales. Internal consistency was determined by Cronbach's α, and the reliability was determined by the intraclass correlation coefficients. Concurrent validity was evaluated by Spearman's rank correlations. Bland-Altman plots were used to investigate the convergent validity. RESULTS The internal consistency and their reliability of the scales were high (p < 0.001). Scores were significantly higher at the time of blood collection (p < 0.001). Mean scores of clinical utility of PIPP were significantly higher than NFCS and DAN (p < 0.05) but not higher than the NIPS (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The four scales were reliable and valid. This study suggests that the PIPP and NIPS has good clinical utility and are better choice for evaluating procedural pain in premature infants. IMPACT The aim of this study was to assess the reliability, validity, and clinical utility of NFCS, DAN, NIPS, and PIPP in premature infants undergoing heel blood collection. The results showed that the four scales have high reliability and internal consistency; the PIPP and NIPS have good clinical utility and are better choice for evaluating procedural pain in premature infants. Our study results provided a reference for clinical workers in choosing pain assessment scales and conduction intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to examine the predictive effect of temperament moderated by preterm childbirth on behavioral problems in toddlerhood. METHOD The sample comprised 100 toddlers of 18-36 months of chronological age and their mothers. They were divided into two groups: 50 toddlers born preterm and admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PT group), and 50 toddlers born full-term (FT group) and recruited from day-care centers. Mothers completed questionnaires about toddlers' temperament and behavior. The Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire was used to assess temperament, and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL 1¹/²-5) to evaluate the total, internalizing, and externalizing behavior problems. Multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the moderation effects of preterm childbirth and temperament factors after controlling for toddlers' age and socioeconomic level. RESULTS There was a moderation effect between preterm childbirth and temperament. Temperament with more Negative Affectivity, moderated by preterm birth, and less Effortful Control explained the total, internalizing, and externalizing behavior problems. CONCLUSION The findings contribute to a better understanding of the impact of preterm childbirth and the dispositional traits of temperament on behavioral problems of toddlers born preterm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extended hospitalization in neonatal intensive care units subjects preterm infants to multiple stress exposures that affect long-term cognitive functioning, motor development, and stress reactivity. Measurement of stress exposure is challenging with multiple measures of stress exposure in use, including counts of skin-breaking or invasive procedures or counts of noxious sensory exposures. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this analysis was to compare measures of stress exposure commonly used by researchers and to determine the predictive validity of these measures for early neurobehavior. We accomplished this objective through the following specific aims: (a) describe the stress exposures of preterm infants in the first 2 weeks of life, (b) determine the correlations among measures of stress exposure, and (c) compare the predictive validity of measures of stress exposure for early neurobehavior. METHODS Very preterm infants born between 28 and 31 weeks postmenstrual age were enrolled from four neonatal intensive care units in a large Midwest city. We measured stress exposure over the first 14 days of life for each infant as a count of skin-breaking procedures, a count of invasive procedures, and cumulative scores derived from the Neonatal Infant Stressor Scale. Neurobehavior was assessed at 35 weeks postmenstrual age using the motor development and vigor and alertness/orientation subscales from the Neurobehavioral Assessment of the Preterm Infant. We used Spearman's rho to determine correlations among the measures of stress exposure and multiple linear regression to determine the predictive validity of each stress exposure measure for neurobehavioral outcomes. RESULTS Seventy-one preterm infants were included in the analysis. We found marked variance across individuals in all measures of stress exposure. There were moderate-high correlations among the measures of stress exposure. No measure of stress exposure was associated with early neurobehavior. DISCUSSION The stress experiences of hospitalized preterm infants vary. This variance is reflected in all measures of stress exposure. Because measures of stress exposure are highly correlated, the most objective measure requiring the least interpretation should be used. However, the currently available measures of stress exposure used in this analysis may not reflect the infant's physiological stress responses and fail to associate with early neurobehavior.

Abstract
Preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units are inevitably subjected to numerous painful procedures. However, little is known about the consequences of early pain experience on fear memory formation later in life. We hypothesized that exposure to repetitive pain in early life triggered hippocampal synaptic plasticity and resulted in memory deficiency in prepubertal and adult rats. From the day of birth (P0) to postnatal day 7 (P7), neonatal male rat pups were randomly assigned to either needle pricks or tactile touches repetitively every 6 h. Trace fear conditioning was performed on rats on P24-P26 and P87-P89. On P24 and P87, rats were sacrificed for molecular and electrophysiological studies. On P24-26 and P87-89, rats that experienced neonatal needle treatment showed a significant reduction in freezing time in the contextual fear conditioning (P < 0.05) and trace fear conditioning tests (P < 0.05). Moreover, repetitive neonatal procedural pain caused a significant decrease in the magnitude of hippocampal long-term potentiation induced by high-frequency stimulation. Furthermore, rats that experienced neonatal needle treatment demonstrated sustained downregulation of NR1, NR2A, NR2B, and GluR1 expression in the hippocampus. Therefore, neonatal pain is related to deficits in hippocampus-related fear memory later in life and might be caused by impairments in hippocampal synaptic plasticity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm infants face unique stress states in early life. Early-life stress has been associated with changes in cortisol reactivity and behavioral abnormalities later in childhood in non-preterm populations. The Neonatal Infant Stressor Scale (NISS) has been used to estimate infant stress in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) but has not been biomarker validated. The relationship between NISS scores and salivary cortisol is unknown. The aim of this study is to test the association between NISS scores and salivary cortisol in the NICU Hospital Exposures and Long-Term Health (NICU-HEALTH) preterm birth cohort. METHODS Three hundred and eighty-six salivary cortisol specimens were collected from 125 NICU-HEALTH participants during the NICU hospitalization. NISS scores were calculated to represent the infant's experience in the 6 hours prior to specimen collection. Adjusted mixed-effect regression models were used to assess the association between each NISS score and salivary cortisol. RESULTS Acute and total NISS scores were significantly associated with salivary cortisol level (P = 0.002 and 0.05, respectively). The chronic NISS score was not associated with salivary cortisol levels. Caffeine treatment and postmenstrual age of the infant were important covariates in all models. CONCLUSION Acute and total NISS score are associated with salivary cortisol level in hospitalized moderately preterm infants.

Abstract
The present meta-analytic study was conducted to examine differences in temperament between preterm and full-term children, considering behavior style and psychobiological approaches. Moreover, we explored the potential moderators of the associations between prematurity and temperament. A systematic literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL. Twenty-two studies were analyzed. Preterm children showed a higher Activity level as well as lower Attentional Focusing and Attention Span/Persistence, in comparison with their full-term counterparts. Extremely preterm children showed a higher Activity level than other preterm levels. These findings support the conclusion that preterm children present with a less regulated temperament relative to those born full term.

Abstract
PURPOSE Studies assessing the influence of neonatal complications on children's dental behaviour are lacking. We aimed to investigate whether prematurity, birth weight, and history of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalisation are associated with distress during dental examination in children. METHODS This preliminary longitudinal, retrospective study included 42 5- and 6-year-old children. Distress during dental examination was assessed using the observational FLACC Pain Assessment Tool through video files. Children self-reported their pain (Faces Pain Scale-Revised) at the end of the session. Information about neonatal complications was obtained through medical records. Bivariate analysis was performed (P < 0.05). RESULTS Children with low birth weight (P = 0.047) and toothache history (P = 0.005) had higher frequency of distress during dental examination. There was no association between distress, prematurity and history of NICU hospitalisation (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Health professionals can help to disseminate the knowledge that children with history of low birth weight are more prone to perceive distress with apparently painless procedures.

Abstract
Objective This study sought to describe and quantify the pharmacological and
nonpharmacological strategies used to relieve the pain/stress of neonates
during hospitalization in neonatal intensive care units. Methods This quantitative, longitudinal, and descriptive study examined 50 neonates
from neonatal intensive care unit admission to discharge. Results A total of 9,948 painful/stressful procedures were recorded (mean = 11.25
± 6.3) per day per neonate. A total of 11,722 pain-management and
relief interventions were performed, of which 11,495 (98.1%) were
nonpharmacological strategies, and 227 (1.9%) were pharmacological
interventions. On average, each neonate received 235 pain-management and
treatment interventions during hospitalization, 13 nonpharmacological
interventions per day, and one pharmacological intervention every 2
days. Conclusion Neonates receive few specific measures for pain relief given the high number
of painful and stressful procedures performed during hospitalization. Thus,
it is essential to implement effective pain-relief protocols.
