The astrochemical evolutionary traits of phospholipid membrane homochirality

Compartmentalization is crucial for the evolution of life. Present-day phospholipid membranes exhibit a high level of complexity and species-dependent homochirality, the so-called lipid divide. It is possible that less stable, yet more dynamic systems, promoting out-of-equilibrium environments, facilitated the evolution of life at its early stages. The composition of the preceding primitive membranes and the evolutionary route towards complexity and homochirality remain unexplained. Organics-rich carbonaceous chondrites are evidence of the ample diversity of interstellar chemistry, which may have enriched the prebiotic milieu on early Earth. This Review evaluates the detections of simple amphiphiles - likely ancestors of membrane phospholipids - in extraterrestrial samples and analogues, along with potential pathways to form primitive compartments on primeval Earth. The chiroptical properties of the chiral backbones of phospholipids provide a guide for future investigations into the origins of phospholipid membrane homochirality. We highlight a plausible common pathway towards homochirality of lipids, amino acids, and sugars starting from enantioenriched monomers. Finally, given their high recalcitrance and resistance to degradation, lipids are among the best candidate biomarkers in exobiology.

Phosphine Reactivity and Its Implications for Pyrolysis Experiments and Astrochemistry

Despite the importance of phosphorus-bearing molecules for life and their abundance outside Earth, the chemistry of those compounds still is poorly described. The present study investigates phosphine (PH₃) decomposition and formation pathways. The reactions studied include phosphine thermal dissociation, conversion into PO(²Π), PN(¹Σ₊), and reactions in the presence of H₂O⁺. The thermodynamic and rate coefficients of all reactions are calculated in the range of 50-2000 K considering the CCSD(T)/6-311G(3df,3pd)//ωB97xD/6-311G(3df,3pd) electronic structure data. The rate coefficients were calculated by RRKM and semiclassical transition-state theory (SCTST). According to our results, PH₃ is stable to thermal decomposition at T < 100 K and can be formed promptly by a reaction network involving PH(³Σ_-), PO(²Π), and PN(¹Σ₊). In the presence of radiation or ions, PH₃ is readily decomposed. For this reason, it should be mainly associated with dust grains or icy mantles to be observed under the physical conditions prevailing in the interstellar medium (ISM). The intersystem crossing associated with the dissociation of the isomers PON, NPO, and PNO is accessed by multireference methods, and its importance for the gas-phase PH₃ formation/destruction is discussed. Also, the implications of the present outcomes on phosphorus astrochemistry are highlighted.

Sources of Nitrogen-, Sulfur-, and Phosphorus-Containing Feedstocks for Prebiotic Chemistry in the Planetary Environment

Biochemistry on Earth makes use of the key elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur (or CHONPS). Chemically accessible molecules containing these key elements would presumably have been necessary for prebiotic chemistry and the origins of life on Earth. For example, feedstock molecules including fixed nitrogen (e.g., ammonia, nitrite, nitrate), accessible forms of phosphorus (e.g., phosphate, phosphite, etc.), and sources of sulfur (e.g., sulfide, sulfite) may have been necessary for the origins of life, given the biochemistry seen in Earth life today. This review describes potential sources of nitrogen-, sulfur-, and phosphorus-containing molecules in the context of planetary environments. For the early Earth, such considerations may be able to aid in the understanding of our own origins. Additionally, as we learn more about potential environments on other planets (for example, with upcoming next-generation telescope observations or new missions to explore other bodies in our Solar System), evaluating potential sources for elements necessary for life (as we know it) can help constrain the potential habitability of these worlds.

Ab Initio Study of Fine and Hyperfine Interactions in Triplet POH

Phosphorous-containing molecules have a great relevance in prebiotic chemistry in view of the fact that phosphorous is a fundamental constituent of biomolecules, such as RNA, DNA, and ATP. Its biogenic importance has led astrochemists to investigate the possibility that P-bearing species could have formed in the interstellar medium (ISM) and subsequently been delivered to early Earth by rocky bodies. However, only two P-bearing molecules have been detected so far in the ISM, with the chemistry of interstellar phosphorous remaining poorly understood. Here, in order to shed further light on P-carriers in space, we report a theoretical spectroscopic characterisation of the rotational spectrum of POH in its 3A″ ground electronic state. State-of-the-art coupled-cluster schemes have been employed to derive rotational constants, centrifugal distortion terms, and most of the fine and hyperfine interaction parameters, while the electron spin-spin dipolar coupling has been investigated using the multi-configuration self-consistent-field method. The computed spectroscopic parameters have been used to simulate the appearance of triplet POH rotational and ro-vibrational spectra in different conditions, from cold to warm environments, either in gas-phase experiments or in molecular clouds. Finally, we point out that the predicted hyperfine structures represent a key pattern for the recognition of POH in laboratory and interstellar spectra.

Thiols in the ISM: first detection of HC(O)SH and confirmation of C2H5SH

The chemical compounds carrying the thiol group (-SH) have been considered essential in recent prebiotic studies regarding the polymerization of amino acids. We have searched for this kind of compounds toward the Galactic Centre quiescent cloud G+0.693-0.027. We report the first detection in the interstellar space of the trans-isomer of monothioformic acid (t-HC(O)SH) with an abundance of ~ 1 × 10^-10. Additionally, we provide a solid confirmation of the gauche isomer of ethyl mercaptan (g-C₂H₅SH) with an abundance of ~ 3 × 10^-10, and we also detect methyl mercaptan (CH₃SH) with an abundance of ~ 5 × 10^-9. Abundance ratios were calculated for the three SH-bearing species and their OH-analogues, revealing similar trends between alcohols and thiols with increasing complexity. Possible chemical routes for the interstellar synthesis of t-HC(O)SH, CH₃SH and C₂H₅SH are discussed, as well as the relevance of these compounds in the synthesis of prebiotic proteins in the primitive Earth.

Cloud-cloud collision as drivers of the chemical complexity in Galactic Centre molecular clouds

G+0.693-0.03 is a quiescent molecular cloud located within the Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2) star-forming complex. Recent spectral surveys have shown that it represents one of the most prolific repositories of complex organic species in the Galaxy. The origin of such chemical complexity, along with the small-scale physical structure and properties of G+0.693-0.03, remains a mystery. In this paper, we report the study of multiple molecules with interferometric observations in combination with single-dish data in G+0.693-0.03. Despite the lack of detection of continuum source, we find small-scale (0.2 pc) structures within this cloud. The analysis of the molecular emission of typical shock tracers such as SiO, HNCO, and CH₃OH unveiled two molecular components, peaking at velocities of 57 and 75 km s^-1. They are found to be interconnected in both space and velocity. The position-velocity diagrams show features that match with the observational signatures of a cloud-cloud collision. Additionally, we detect three series of class I methanol masers known to appear in shocked gas, supporting the cloud-cloud collision scenario. From the maser emission we provide constraints on the gas kinetic temperatures (∼30-150 K) and H₂ densities (10⁴-10⁵ cm^-2). These properties are similar to those found for the starburst galaxy NGC253 also using class I methanol masers, suggested to be associated with a cloud-cloud collision. We conclude that shocks driven by the possible cloud-cloud collision is likely the most important mechanism responsible for the high level of chemical complexity observed in G+0.693-0.03.

Toward the RNA-World in the Interstellar Medium-Detection of Urea and Search of 2-Amino-oxazole and Simple Sugars

In the past decade, astrochemistry has witnessed an impressive increase in the number of detections of complex organic molecules. Some of these species are of prebiotic interest such as glycolaldehyde, the simplest sugar, or aminoacetonitrile, a possible precursor of glycine. Recently, we have reported the detection of two new nitrogen-bearing complex organics, glycolonitrile and Z-cyanomethanimine, known to be intermediate species in the formation process of ribonucleotides within theories of a primordial RNA-world for the origin of life. In this study, we present deep and high-sensitivity observations toward two of the most chemically rich sources in the galaxy: a giant molecular cloud in the center of the Milky Way (G + 0.693-0.027) and a proto-Sun (IRAS16293-2422 B). Our aim is to explore whether the key precursors considered to drive the primordial RNA-world chemistry are also found in space. Our high-sensitivity observations reveal that urea is present in G + 0.693-0.027 with an abundance of ∼5 × 10^-11. This is the first detection of this prebiotic species outside a star-forming region. Urea remains undetected toward the proto-Sun IRAS16293-2422 B (upper limit to its abundance of ≤2 × 10^-11). Other precursors of the RNA-world chemical scheme such as glycolaldehyde or cyanamide are abundant in space, but key prebiotic species such as 2-amino-oxazole, glyceraldehyde, or dihydroxyacetone are not detected in either source. Future more sensitive observations targeting the brightest transitions of these species will be needed to disentangle whether these large prebiotic organics are certainly present in space.

On the formation of phosphorous polycyclic aromatics hydrocarbons (PAPHs) in astrophysical environments

The formation of phosphorous-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAPHs) in astrophysical contexts is proposed and analyzed by means of computational methods [B3LYP-D3BJ/ma-def2-TZVPP, MP2-F12, CCSD-F12b and CCSD(T)-F12b levels of theory]. A "bottom-up" approach based on a radical-neutral reaction scheme between acetylene (C₂H₂) and the CP radical was used investigating: (a) the synthesis of the first PAPH (C₅H₅P) "phosphinine"; (b) PAPH growth by addition of C₂H₂ to the C₅H₄P radical; (c) PAPH synthesis by addition reactions of one CP radical and nC₂H₂ to a neutral PAH. Results show: (I) the formation of the phosphinine radical has a strong thermodynamic tendency (-133.3 kcal mol^-1) and kinetic barriers ≤5.4 kcal mol^-1; (II) PAPH growth by nC₂H₂ addition on the radical phosphinine easily and exothermically produces radicals (1a- or 1-phospha-naphtalenes with kinetic barriers ≤7.1 kcal mol^-1 and reaction free energies ≤-102.5 kcal mol^-1); (III) the addition of a single CP + nC₂H₂ to a neutral benzene generates a complex chemistry where the main product is 2-phospha-naphtalene; (IV) because of the CP radical character, its barrierless addition to a PAH produces a resonant stabilized PAPH, becoming excellent candidates for addition reactions with neutral or radical hydrocarbons and PAHs; (V) the same energy trend between all four levels of theory continues a well-calibrated computational protocol to analyze complex organic reactions with astrochemical interest using electronic structure theory.
