Self-assembly of metalla[3]catenanes, Borromean rings and ring-in-ring complexes using a simple π-donor unit

Synergizing Steric Hindrance and Stacking Interactions To Facilitate the Controlled Assembly of Multiple 41 Metalla-Knots and Pseudo-Solomon Links

In this work, a noncoplanar terphenyl served as a building block to synthesize a novel 3,3'-substituted bipyridyl ligand (L1) which further reacted with binuclear half-sandwich units A/B, giving rise to two aesthetic 41 metalla-knots in high yields via a coordination-driven self-assembly strategy. Furthermore, given the inherent compactness of the 41 metalla-knots, it creates favorable conditions for the emergence of steric repulsion. We focused on progressively introducing nitrogen atoms featuring a lone pair of electrons (LPEs) into ligand L1 to manipulate the balance of H⋅⋅⋅H/LPEs⋅⋅⋅LPEs steric repulsion during the assembly process, ultimately achieving controlled assembly from 41 metalla-knots to the pseudo-Solomon link and then to molecular tweezer-like assembly facilitated by stacking interactions. All the assemblies were well characterized by solution-state NMR techniques, ESI-TOF/MS, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The evolutionary process of the topological architectures is equivalent to visualizing the synergistic effect of steric hindrance and stacking interactions on structural assembly, providing a new avenue for achieving the controlled synthesis of different topologies.

Synthesis of a Metalla[2]catenane, Metallarectangles and Polynuclear Assemblies from Di(N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Ligands

The 2,7-fluorenone-linked bis(6-imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium) salt H2-1(PF6)2 reacts with Ag2O in CH3CN to yield the [2]catenane [Ag4(1)4](PF6)4. The [2]catenane rearranges in DMF to yield two metallamacrocycles [Ag2(1)2](PF6)2. 2,7-Fluorenone-bridged bis-(imidazolium) salts H2-L(PF6)2 (L=2 a, 2 b) react with Ag2O in CH3CN to yield metallamacrocycles [Ag2(L)2](PF6)2 with interplanar distances between the fluorenone rings too small for [2]catenane formation. Intra- and intermolecular π⋅⋅⋅π interactions between the fluorenone groups were observed by X-ray crystallography. The strongly kinked 2,7-fluorenone bridged bis(5-imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium) salt H2-4(PF6)2 reacts with Ag2O to yield [Ag2(4)(CN)](PF6), while the tetranuclear assembly [Ag4(4)2(CO3)](PF6)2 was obtained in the presence of K2CO3.

Unravelling the Roles of Solvophobic Effects and π⋅⋅⋅π Stacking Interactions in the Formation of [2]Catenanes Featuring Di-(N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Building Blocks

A series of [2]catenanes has been prepared from di-NHC building blocks by utilizing solvophobic effects and/or π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The dinickel naphthobiscarbene complex syn-[1] and the kinked biphenyl-bridged bipyridyl ligand L2 yield the [2]catenane [2-IL](OTf)4 by self-assembly. Solvophobic effects are pivotal for the formation of the interlocked species. Substitution of the biphenyl-linker in L2 for a pyromellitic diimide group gave ligand L3 , which yielded in combination with syn-[1] the [2]catenane [3-IL](OTf)4 . This assembly exhibits enhanced stability in diluted solution, aided by additional π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The π⋅⋅⋅π stacking was augmented by the introduction of a pyrene bridge between two NHC donors in ligand L4 . Di-NHC precursor H2 -L4 (PF6 )2 reacts with Ag2 O to give the [Ag2 L4 2 ]2 [2]catenane [4-IL](PF6 )4 , which shows strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions between the pyrene groups. This assembly was readily converted into the [Au2 L4 2 ]2 gold species [5-IL](PF6 )4 , which exhibits exceptional stability based on the strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions and the enhanced stability of the Au-CNHC bonds.

Dynamic Cages-Towards Nanostructured Smart Materials

The interest in capsular assemblies such as dynamic organic and coordination cages has blossomed over the last decade. Given their chemical and structural variability, these systems have found applications in diverse fields of research, including energy conversion and storage, catalysis, separation, molecular recognition, and live-cell imaging. In the exploration of the potential of these discrete architectures, they are increasingly being employed in the formation of more complex systems and smart materials. This Review highlights the most promising pathways to overcome common drawbacks of cage systems (stability, recovery) and discusses the most promising strategies for their hybridization with systems featuring various dimensionalities. Following the description of the most recent advances in the fabrication of zero to three-dimensional cage-based systems, this Review will provide the reader with the structure-dependent relationship between the employed cages and the properties of the materials.

Self-Assembly and Photothermal Conversion of MetallaRussian Doll and Metalla[2]catenanes Induced via Multiple Stacking Interactions

A variety of organometallic supramolecular architectures have been constructed over the past decades and their properties were also explored via different strategies. However, the synthesis of metalla-Russian doll is still a fascinating challenge. Herein, a series of new coordination supramolecular complexes, including a metalla-Russian doll, metalla[2]catenanes, and metallarectangles, were synthesized by using meticulously selected Cp*Rh (Cp* = η5-C5Me5) building units (E1, E2, and E3) and three rigid anthracylpyridine ligands (L1, L2, and L3) via a self-assembly strategy. While the combination of the short ligand L1 and E1 or E2 generated two metallarectangles, the longer ligand L2 containing an alkynyl group resulted in two new [2]catenanes, most likely due to which the strong electron-donating effect of alkynyl groups causes self-accumulation. Interestingly, an unusual Russian doll assembly was obtained through the reaction of L3 and E3 based on sextuple π···π stacking interactions. Furthermore, the dynamic structural conversion between [2]catenanes and the corresponding metallarectangles could be observed through concentration-, solvent-, and guest-induced effects. The [2]catenane complexes 4b displayed efficient photothermal conversion efficiency in solution (20.2%), in comparison with other organometallic macrocycles. We believe that π···π stacking interactions generate active nonradiative pathways and promote radiative photodeactivation pathways. This study proves the versatility of half-sandwich building units, not only to build complicated supramolecular topologies but also in effective functional materials for various appealing applications.

Order-order assembly transition-driven polyamines detection based on iron-sulfur complexes

Innovative modes of response can greatly push forward chemical sensing processes and subsequently improve sensing performance. Classical chemical sensing modes seldom involve the transition of a delicate molecular assembly during the response. Here, we display a sensing mode for polyamine detection based on an order-order transition of iron-sulfur complexes upon their assembly. Strong validation proves that the unique order-order transition of the assemblies is the driving force of the response, in which the polyamine captures the metal ion of the iron-sulfur complex, leading it to decompose into a metal-polyamine product, accompanied by an order-order transition of the assemblies. This mechanism makes the detection process more intuitive and selective, and remarkably improves the detection efficiency, achieving excellent polyamines specificity, second-level response, convenient visual detection, and good recyclability of the sensing system. Furthermore, this paper also provides opportunities for the further application of the iron-sulfur platform in environment-related fields.

Bi-directional geometric constraints in the construction of giant dual-rim nanorings

In the field of metallo-supramolecular assemblies, supramolecular macrocycles have attracted considerable attention due to their guest recognition and catalytic properties. Herein, we report a novel strategy for the construction of giant hollow macrocyclic structures using a bi-directional geometric constraint strategy. We investigated the structural design of two terpyridine-based tetratopic organic ligands, whose inner and outer rims have different angles. Compared to conventional strategies of self-assembly using single angular orientation building blocks that typically generate small macrocyclic objects or polymers, the mutual interaction between the different angles of the ligands could promote the formation of giant hollow macrocyclic supramolecular architectures. The self-assembly mechanism and hierarchical self-assembly of giant supramolecular macrocycles have been characterized by NMR, ESI-MS and TEM experiments. The strategy used in this study not only advances the design of giant 2D macrocycles with large inner diameters but also gives insights into the mechanism of formation of large structures.

Organometallic Borromean Rings and [2]Catenanes Featuring Di-NHC Ligands

We report herein a series of organometallic Borromean rings (BRs) and [2]catenanes prepared from benzobiscarbene ligands. The reaction of dinickel complexes of the benzobiscarbenes 1 a-1 c with a thiazolothiazole bridged bipyridyl ligand L² led by self-assembly to a series of organometallic BRs. Solvophobic effects played a crucial role in the formation and stability of the interlocked species. The stability of BRs is related to the N-alkyl substituents at the precursors 1 a-1 c, where longer alkyl substitutes improve stability and inter-ring interactions. Solvophobic effects are also important for the stability of [2]catenanes prepared from 1 a-1 c and a flexible bipyridyl ligand L³ . In solution, an equilibrium between the [2]catenanes and their macrocyclic building blocks was observed. High proportions of [2]catenanes were obtained in concentrated solutions or polar solvents. The proportion of [2]catenanes in solution could be further enhanced by lengthening of the N-alkyl substitutes.

Stereoselective Construction of Chiral Linear [3]Catenanes and [2]Catenanes

We have successfully constructed a chiral linear [3]catenane stereoselectively by coordination-driven self-assembly using a ditopic monodentate ligand containing l-valine residues with a binuclear half-sandwich organometallic rhodium(III) unit. Furthermore, by increasing the steric hindrance of the amino acid residues in the ligand, a chiral [2]catenane was obtained, which can be regarded as the factor catenane of the chiral linear [3]catenane from a topological viewpoint. Notably, the resulting molecular catenanes all exhibit complex coconformational mechanical helical chirality and planar chirality ascribed to the point chirality of the ligands. Linear [3]catenanes and [2]catenanes with the opposite chirality can be obtained by using ligands containing the corresponding d-amino acid residues, which have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, mass spectrometry, and circular dichroism spectroscopy.

A Switchable Palladium(II) Trefoil Entangled Tetrahedron with Temperature Dependence and Concentration Independence

Self-assembly makes metallo-interlocked architectures attractive targets, but being in equilibrium with smaller species means that they can suffer from dilution effects. We show that a junctioned system gives rise to a [Pd4 (L)2 ]8+ trefoil entangled tetrahedron irrespective of concentration. Heating the sample reversibly shifts the equilibrium from the knot to an isomeric non-interlocked dual metallo-cycle, demonstrating that thermodynamic equilibria can still be exploited for switching even in the absence of concentration effects.

Homo- and heterometallic chiral dynamic architectures from allyl-palladium(II) building blocks

New chiral tetranuclear square-like homo- and heterometallamacrocycles containing allyl-palladium and either {Pd(P-P)*} or {Pt(P-P)*} optically pure moieties (P-P* = (2S,3S)-O-isopropylidene-2,3-dihydroxy-1,4-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)butane ((S,S)-DIOP) and (2S,4S)-2,4-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)pentane ((S,S)-BDPP)) have been obtained by the self-assembly of [Pd(η³-2-Me-C₃H₄)(4-PPh₂py)₂]⁺ and [M(P-P)*(H₂O)₂]²⁺ building blocks in a 1 : 1 molar ratio. The supramolecular assemblies thus prepared [{Pd(η³-2-Me-C₃H₄)}₂(4-PPh₂py)₄{M(P-P)*}₂](CF₃SO₃)₆ (M = Pd, Pt) have been fully characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and MS spectrometry. The structures display remarkable differences on their dynamic behaviour in solution that depend on the lability and thermodynamic strength of M-py bonds. The structural characteristics of the new metallamacrocyles obtained have also been unambiguously established by XRD analysis. The architectures have been assayed as catalytic precursors in the asymmetric allylic alkylation reaction.

Stereoselective Self-Assembly of Complex Chiral Radial [5]Catenanes Using Half-Sandwich Rhodium/Iridium Building Blocks

Herein, we have successfully achieved the stereoselective synthesis of two chiral radial [5]catenanes in a single step through the self-assembly of bidentate ligands containing l-alanine residues and binuclear half-sandwich organometallic rhodium(III)/iridium(III) clips. Remarkably, these two chiral radial [5]catenanes exhibit complex stereochemical structures as revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The eight binuclear units and eight bidentate ligands in their solid-state structures all exhibit a single planar chirality, and the interlocking between molecular macrocycles exhibits a single co-conformational mechanical helical chirality. This indicates that the introduction of the point chirality in the ligands enables the efficient stereoselective construction of mechanically interlocked molecules. Furthermore, by using ligands containing d-alanine residues, radial [5]catenanes with the opposite planar chirality and opposite co-conformational mechanical helical chirality have also been obtained.

Coordination assembly and NIR photothermal conversion of Cp*Rh-based supramolecular topologies based on distinct conjugated systems

The selective synthesis and transformation of Borromean rings and [2]catenane, are presented based on linear/aromatic conjugated ligands through different stacking interactions, promoting nonradiative transitions and trigger photothermal conversion.

Reversible pH-Controlled Catenation of a Benzobisimidazole-Based Tetranuclear Rectangle

The development of methodologies to control on demand and reversibly supramolecular transformations from self-assembled metalla-structures requires the rational design of architectures able to answer to an applied stimulus. While solvent or concentration changes, light exposure or addition of a chemical have been largely explored to provide these transformations, the case of pH sensitive materials is less described. Herein, we report the first example of a pH-triggered dissociation of a coordination-driven self-assembled interlocked molecular link. It incorporates a pH sensitive benzobisimidazole-based ligand that can be selectively protonated on its bisimidazole moieties. This generates intermolecular electrostatic repulsions that reduces drastically the stability of the interlocked structure, leading to its dissociation without any sign of protonation of the pyridine moieties involved in the coordination bonds. Importantly, the dissociation process is reversible through addition of a base.

Coordination-Assembly of Lanthanide Supramolecular Hydrogels with Luminescent Multi-stimulus Response

Luminescent supramolecular hydrogels have shown extensive potential for a variety of applications due to their unique optical properties and biocompatibility. Coordination self-assembly provides a promising strategy for the preparation of supramolecular hydrogels. In this contribution, a series of luminescent lanthanide (Ln) supramolecular hydrogels HG-Ln_2nL_3n^1/2 are synthesized by coordination self-assembly of Ln ions and V shaped bis-tetradentate ligands (H₄L¹ and H₄L²) with different bent angles (∠B). Two rigid conjugated ligands H₄L¹ and H₄L² with bent angles (∠B ≈ 150°) featuring a 2,6-pyridine bitetrazolate chelating moiety were designed and synthesized, which generated hydrogels via the deprotonation self-assembly with lanthanide ions. Characteristic Eu³⁺ and Yb³⁺ emissions were realized in the corresponding hydrogels, with intriguing multi-stimulus response behaviors. The luminescence of the HG-Eu_2nL_3n¹ hydrogel can be enhanced or quenched when stimulated by diverse metal ions, attributed to the replacement of the coordinated lanthanide ions and changes in the intersystem crossing efficiency of the ligand. Furthermore, pH-responsive emission of the HG-Eu_2nL_3n¹ hydrogel has also been observed. Our work provides potential strategies for the design of next-generation smart responsive hydrogel materials with variable structures.

Modular synthesis of antimalarial quinoline-based PGM metallarectangles

A new ditopic, quinoline-based ligand L (7-chloro-4-(pyridin-4-yl)quinoline) was synthesized via a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The ligand was utilized to synthesize the corresponding half-sandwich iridium(III) and ruthenium(II) binuclear complexes (1c and 1d) and the subsequent metallarectangles (2c, 2d, 3c, and 3d), via [2 + 2] coordination-driven self-assembly. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the proposed molecular structure of the binuclear complex [{IrCl₂(Cp*)}₂(μ-L)] (1c) and DFT calculations were used to predict the optimized geometry of the rectangular nature of [{Ir(μ-Cl)(Cp*)}₄(μ-L)₂](CF₃SO₃)₄ (2c). All of the metallarectangles were isolated as their triflate salts and characterized using various spectroscopic (¹H, ¹³C{¹H}, DOSY NMR, and IR spectroscopy) and analytical techniques (ESI-MS). The synthesized compounds were screened against the NF54 chloroquine-sensitive (CQS) and K1 chloroquine-resistant (CQR) strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Incorporation of the ubiquitous quinoline core and metal complexation significantly enhanced the in vitro biological activity, with an increase in the nuclearity correlating with an increase in the resultant antiplasmodial activity. This was observed across both parasitic strains, alluding to the potential of supramolecular metallarectangles to act as antiplasmodial agents. Inhibition of haemozoin formation was considered a potential mechanism of action and selected metallarectangles exhibit β-haematin inhibition activity with near comparable activity to chloroquine.

Synthesis and Near-Infrared Photothermal Conversion of Discrete Supramolecular Topologies Featuring Half-Sandwich [Cp*Rh] Units

Although a large number of novel supramolecular topologies featuring half-sandwich [Cp*Rh] units have been reported, investigations into the properties of these architectures are astoundingly rare. In addition, the bidentate ligands employed to prepare these species have remained relatively homogeneous (i.e., symmetrical bis(pyri-4-dyl) ligands). To address these paucities in the field, the novel unsymmetrical ligand L2 and the rarely reported pyri-3-dyl ligand L3, all bearing aromatic phenazine groups (an N-heterocyclic analog of anthracene), were synthesized in addition to the common symmetrical pyri-4-dyl L1. [3]Catenane, [2]catenane, and Borromean rings assemblies were constructed successfully by the self-assembly of L1 with different building blocks. Afterward, ligand L2 was applied to prepare two novel molecular-tweezer-like compounds. Lastly, a twisted [2]catenane (relative to the [2]catenane constructed using L1) and a sandwiched metallarectangle were obtained using L3. π-π stacking interactions were observed to play a significant role in stabilizing these topologies, which also promoted nonradiative migration and triggered photothermal conversion in both the solution and the solid state. In the solution state, a clear rule of thumb was derived whereby the NIR photothermal conversion efficiency increased as the π-π stacking increased, and a very high photothermal conversion efficiency (35.5-62.4%) was observed. In addition, this family of half-sandwich-based assemblies also exhibited good photothermal conversion properties in the crystalline and noncrystal powder states. This research provides a novel method to synthesize excellent NIR photothermal conversion materials featuring half-sandwich [Cp*Rh] units and points to potential applications in the near future.

Same knot, longer rope: altering ligand geometry provides control over nuclearity in self-assembled trefoil knots

Taking advantage of the accumulation of a number of noncovalent intramolecular interactions, octanuclear and hexanuclear trefoil knots are self-assembled based on half-sandwich rhodium fragments. The selective synthesis of either the octanuclear or hexanuclear knot can be controlled by altering different dipyridyl arms.

On Borromean links and related structures

The creation of knotted, woven and linked molecular structures is an exciting and growing field in synthetic chemistry. Presented here is a description of an extended family of structures related to the classical `Borromean rings', in which no two rings are directly linked. These structures may serve as templates for the designed synthesis of Borromean polycatenanes. Links of n components in which no two are directly linked are termed `n-Borromean' [Liang & Mislow (1994). J. Math. Chem. 16, 27-35]. In the classic Borromean rings the components are three rings (closed loops). More generally, they may be a finite number of periodic objects such as graphs (nets), or sets of strings related by translations as in periodic chain mail. It has been shown [Chamberland & Herman (2015). Math. Intelligencer, 37, 20-25] that the linking patterns can be described by complete directed graphs (known as tournaments) and those up to 13 vertices that are vertex-transitive are enumerated. In turn, these lead to ring-transitive (isonemal) n-Borromean rings. Optimal piecewise-linear embeddings of such structures are given in their highest-symmetry point groups. In particular, isonemal embeddings with rotoinversion symmetry are described for three, five, six, seven, nine, ten, 11, 13 and 14 rings. Piecewise-linear embeddings are also given of isonemal 1- and 2-periodic polycatenanes (chains and chain mail) in their highest-symmetry setting. Also the linking of n-Borromean sets of interleaved honeycomb nets is described.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Bonded with Metal N-Heterocyclic Carbenes for efficient catalysis

Metal N-heterocyclic carbenes (M-NHCs) on the pore walls of a porous metal-organic framework (MOF) can be used as active sites for efficient organic catalysis. Traditional approaches that need strong alkaline reagents or insoluble Ag₂O are not, however, suitable for the incorporation of NHCs on the backbones of MOFs because such reagents could destroy their frameworks or result in low reactivity. Accordingly, development of facile strategies toward functional MOFs with covalently bound M-NHCs for catalysis is needed. Herein, we describe the development of a general and facile approach to preparing MOFs with covalently linked active M-NHC (M = Pd, Ir) single-site catalysts by using a soluble Ag salt AgOC(CF₃)₃ as the source and subsequent transmetalation. The well-defined M-NHC-MOF (M = Pd, Ir) catalysts obtained in this way have shown excellent catalytic activity and stability in Suzuki reactions and hydrogen transfer reactions. This provides a general and facile strategy for anchoring functional M-NHC single-site catalysts onto functionalized MOFs for different reactions.

Self-Assembled Manganese(I)-Based Selenolato-Bridged Tetranuclear Metallorectangles: Host-Guest Interaction, Anticancer, and CO-Releasing Studies

Supramolecular one-step self-assembly of dimanganese decacarbonyl, diaryl diselenide, and linear dipyridyl ligands (L = pyrazine (pz), 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) has resulted in the formation of selenolato-bridged manganese(I)-based metallorectangles. The synthesis of tetranuclear Mn(I)-based metallorectangles [{(CO)₃Mn(μ-SeR)₂Mn(CO)₃}₂(μ-L)₂] (1-6) was facilitated by the oxidative addition of diaryl diselenide to dimanganese decacarbonyl with the simultaneous coordination of linear bidentate pyridyl linker in an orthogonal fashion. Formation of metallorectangles 1-6 was ascertained using IR, UV-vis, NMR spectroscopic techniques, and elemental analyses. The molecular mass of compounds 2, 4, and 6 were determined by ESI-mass spectrometry. Solid-state structural elucidation of 2, 3, and 6 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods revealed a rectangular framework wherein selenolato-bridges and pyridyl ligands define the shorter and longer edges, respectively. Also, the guest binding capability of metallorectangles 3 and 5 with different aromatic guests was studied using UV-vis absorption and emission spectrophotometric titration methods that affirmed strong host-guest binding interactions. The formation of the host-guest complex between metallorectangle 3 and pyrene has been explicitly corroborated by the single-crystal X-ray structure of 3•pyrene. Moreover, select metallorectangles 1-4 and 6 were studied to explore their anticancer activity, while CO-releasing ability of metallorectangle 2 was further appraised using equine heart myoglobin assay.

A dynamic tetranuclear gold(i)-cyclophane - gold(i)-centred chirality and fluxionality arising from an intramolecular shift of Au-S bonds

A tetranuclear gold(i) complex [Au₄(μ-PAnP)₂(μ-L)₂] (PAnP = 9,10-bis(diphenylphosphino)anthracene and L = benzene-1,2-dithiolate) has been synthesized and characterised by multinuclear NMR and X-ray crystallography. The molecule has a cyclophane-like structure which can be considered to be composed of two [Au₂(μ-PAnP)(μ-L)] units held together by Au-S bonds and aurophilic interactions (Au-Au = 3.0712(2) Å). L acts as a chelating and bridging ligand with one of its S atoms bonded to two Au ions as sulfonium ions and there are two Au₂S₂ cores on each side of the cyclophane. A sulfur atom in each Au₂S₂ core is a chiral sulfonium ion, being bonded to two chemically distinct Au ions. Two Au ions are bonded to four atoms (2S, P and Au) in an asymmetric environment, making them a rare example of gold(i)-centred chirality. The two Au₂S₂ cores have R_Au, R_S and S_Au, S_S configurations, and the chiralities of the sulfonium ion and the gold ion are correlated. Variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy showed that the metallacyclophane undergoes rapid exchange in solution. A bond shift mechanism involving simultaneous cleavage and formation of Au-S bonds is proposed for the exchange.

An "All-in-One" Synthetic Strategy for Linear Metalla[4]Catenanes

One fascinating and challenging synthetic target in the field of mechanically interlocked molecules is the family of linear [4]catenanes, which are topologically identical to the logo of automobile maker Audi. Herein, we report an "all-in-one" synthetic strategy for the synthesis of linear metalla[n]catenanes (n = 2-4) by the coordination-driven self-assembly of Cp*Rh-based (Cp* = η⁵-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) organometallic rectangle π-donors and tetracationic organic cyclophane π-acceptors. We selected the pyrenyl group as the π-donor unit, leading to homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes and cyclic metalla[3]catenanes via π-stacking interactions. By taking advantage of the strong electrostatic interactions between π-donor units and π-acceptor units, a heterogeneous metalla[2]catenanes and linear metalla[3]catenanes, respectively, could be obtained by the simple stirring of homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes with a suitable tetracationic cyclophane. On this basis, this "all-in-one" synthetic strategy was further used to realize a quantitative one-step synthesis of a linear metalla[4]catenanes via the self-assembly of cyclic metalla[3]catenanes and tetracationic cyclophanes. All heterogeneous metalla[n]catenanes (n = 2-4) were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis, NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Selective Construction of Trefoil knots and a Molecular Borromean Ring Induced by Steric Hindrance of Thioether Ligands

Two Cp*-Rh^III based trefoil knots were obtained in high yield under ambient conditions via the coordination-driven self-assembly of semi-rigid thioether dipyridyl ligand 1,4-bis[(pyridin-4-ylthio)methyl]benzene (L₁ ), ligand chloranilic acid (H₂ -CA) and 6,11-dihydroxytetracene-5,12-dione (H₂ -TtDo) with Cp*Rh^III metal corner units, respectively. Furthermore, using the bulkier 4,4'-{[(2,5-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)bis(methylene)]bis(sulfanediyl)}dipyridine (L₂ ) in the place of ligand L₁ in the construction process resulted in the formation of a teranuclear metallacycle and a template-free Borromean ring in high yields thanks to significantly altered intermolecular forces between the constituent ligands induced by the sterically-hindering methyl groups of L₂ , as demonstrated via a detailed X-ray crystallographic analysis and NMR spectroscopy.

A cucurbituril-pillararene ring-on-ring complex

A new type of non-intertwined ring-on-ring assembly was formed by the portal binding between a perfunctionalized polycationic pillar[5]arene and a cucurbit[10]uril, demonstrating a facile approach to solubilize a large macrocycle in water. Different binding behaviors towards guests were observed for the high-order complex, enriching the functional supramolecular systems.

Coordination-Driven Selective Formation of D2 Symmetric Octanuclear Organometallic Cages

The coordination-driven self-assembly of organometallic half-sandwich iridium(III)- and rhodium(III)-based building blocks with asymmetric ambidentate pyridyl-carboxylate ligands is described. Despite the potential for obtaining a statistical mixture of multiple products, D₂ symmetric octanuclear cages were formed selectively by taking advantage of the electronic effects emanating from the two types of chelating sites - (O,O') and (N,N') - on the tetranuclear building blocks. The metal sources and the lengths of bridging ligands influence the selectivity of the self-assembly. Experimental observations, supported by computational studies, suggest that the D₂ symmetric cages are the thermodynamically favored products. Overall, the results underline the importance of electronic effects on the selectivity of coordination-driven self-assembly, and demonstrate that asymmetric ambidentate ligands can be used to control the design of discrete supramolecular coordination complexes.

Molecular Cage Promoted Aerobic Oxidation or Photo-Induced Rearrangement of Spiroepoxy Naphthalenone

Herein, we report a Pd4L2-type molecular cage (1) and catalyzed reactions of spiroepoxy naphthalenone (2) in water, where selective formation of 2-(hydroxymethyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione (3) via aerobic oxidation, or 1-hydroxy-2-naphthaldehyde (4) via photo-induced rearrangement under N2 have been accomplished. Encapsulation of four molecules of guest 2 within cage 1, i.e., (2)4⊂1, has been confirmed by NMR, and a final host-guest complex of 3⊂1 has also been determined by single crystal X-Ray diffraction study. While the photo-induced ring-opening isomerization from 2 to 4 are known, appearance of charge-transfer absorption on the host-guest complex of (2)4⊂1 allows low-power blue LEDs irradiation to promote this process.

Construction of organometallic trefoil knots and one-dimensional chains featuring half-sandwich Cp*Rh corner units and an abnormal zwitterion ligand

An abnormal flexible O-coordinated zwitterion ligand L shows self-adaptive conformation behaviour in chemical self-assembly. Two trefoil knots were obtained with C-shaped ligand L and two novel 1D chains were obtained with Z-shaped ligand L.

A hierarchical assembly strategy for near-infrared photothermal conversion: unconventional heterogeneous metalla[2]catenanes

Herein, we report a hierarchical assembly strategy for constructing heterogeneous half-sandwich organometallic D-A (D = π-donor, A = π-acceptor) interlocked structures, and their application in near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion. Thienothiophene and diketopyrrolopyrrole groups were selected as the D and A units, leading to two homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes with D-D-D-D and A-A-A-A stacks, respectively. By the ordered secondary assembly of homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes, two unprecedented heterogeneous D-A metalla[2]catenanes comprising an unusual mixed D-A-D-D and unconventional D-A-A-A stacks were realized by the combination of multiple noncovalent interactions, as all demonstrated by a detailed X-ray crystallographic study. Benefiting from the mixed D-A stacking modes, NIR absorption of heterogeneous D-A metalla[2]catenanes is significantly enhanced in contrast to homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes. Thanks to the enhanced NIR absorption and the fluorescence quenching effect from half-sandwich organometallic fragments, heterogeneous D-A metalla[2]catenanes displayed high-performance NIR photothermal conversion properties (η = 27.3%).
