Abstract
Hydrothermally derived nanocubes of CeO2(10 nm) were explored as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the partial oxidation of aromatic alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and aerobic oxidation ofp-nitrotoluene top-nitrobenzoic acid. The CeO2nanocatalyst was characterized by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. TEM/high-resolution TEM micrographs reveal a morphology of mostly cubic nanostructures with exposed highly active {100} and {110} facets. The surface area of nanoceria was determined by BET analysis and found to be 33.8 m2g-1. To demonstrate the universality of the catalytic system, the selective oxidation of different substrates of benzylic alcohol and complete oxidation ofp-nitrotoluene was investigated under mild conditions. Absolute selectivity towards their respective aldehydes was found to be 99.50% (benzaldehyde), 90.18% (p-chlorobenzaldehyde), 99.71% (p-nitrobenzaldehyde), 98.10% (p-fluorobenzaldehyde), 94.66% (p-anisaldehyde) and 86.14% (cinnamaldehyde). Moreover, the catalytic oxidative transformation of nitrotoluene results in 100% conversion with 99.29% selectivity towards nitrobenzoic acid.

Abstract
Transition metal nanoclusters can exhibit unique and tunable properties which result not only from their chemical composition but also from their atomic packing and quantized electronic structures. Here, we introduce a promising family of bimetallic TM@Ti12, TM@Zr12, and TM@Hf12 nanoclusters with icosahedral geometry, where TM represents an atom from groups 3 to 12. Density functional theory calculations show that their stability can be explained with familiar concepts of metal cluster electronic and atomic shell structures. The magnetic properties of these quasispherical clusters are entirely consistent with superatom electronic shells and Hund's rules, and can be tuned by the choice of the TM dopant. The computed cluster atomization energies were analyzed in terms of the elements' cohesive energy, Ecoh, and contributions from geometric distortion, Edis, surface energy, Es, and ionic bonding, Ei. Some clusters have anomalous stability relative to Ecoh + Edis + Es + Ei. We attribute this to superatomic character associated with a favorable atomic and electronic shell structure. This raises the possibility of designing stable superatoms and materials with tailored electronic and magnetic properties.

Abstract
A rapid route for obtaining unsymmetrical 1,2-dihydropyridines (1,2-DHPs) as opposed to 1,4-dihydropyridines (1,4-DHPs) has been achieved via a one-pot multicomponent Hantzsch reaction. A benign protocol has been developed for the preparation of various 1,2-dihydropyridine derivatives using heterogenized phosphotungstic acid on alumina support (40 wt %). High yields of over 75% have been accomplished in just 2-3.5 h after screening several heterogeneous catalysts and investigating the optimal reaction conditions. The catalyst chosen has passed the heterogeneity test and was shown to have the potential of being reused for up to 8 consecutive cycles before having a significant loss in activity. In addition, aromatic aldehydes gave the aforementioned regioisomer while the classical 1,4-DHPs were obtained when carrying out the reaction using aliphatic aldehydes. The preliminary study of the antiproliferative activity against human solid tumor cells demonstrated that 1,2-DHPs could inhibit cancer cell growth in the low micromolar range.

Abstract
A new eco-friendly approach for the preparation of sustainable heterogeneous palladium catalysts from rice husk-derived biogenic silica (RHP-Si and RHU-Si). The designed heterogeneously supported palladium species (RHP-Si-NH2-Pd and RHU-Si-NH2-Pd) were fully characterized and successfully employed as catalysts for various chemical transformations (C-C bond-forming reactions, aerobic oxidations and carbocyclizations). Suzuki-Miyaura transformations were highly efficient in a green solvent system (H2O:EtOH (1:1) with excellent recyclability, providing the cross-coupling products with a wide range of functionalities in high isolated yields (up to 99%). Palladium species (Pd(0)-nanoparticles or Pd(II)) were also efficient catalysts in the green aerobic oxidation of an allylic alcohol and a co-catalytic stereoselective cascade carbocyclization transformation. In the latter case, a quaternary stereocenter was formed with excellent stereoselectivity (up to 27:1 dr).

Abstract
Imparting an enhanced CO2 reduction selectivity to ZnGa2O4 photocatalysts has been demonstrated by controlled crystallization from interdispersed nanoparticles of zinc and gallium hydroxides. The hydroxide precursor in which Zn(ii) and Ga(iii) are homogeneously interdispersed was prepared through an epoxide-driven sol-gel reaction. ZnGa2O4 obtained by a heat-treatment exhibits a higher surface basicity and an enhanced affinity for CO2 molecules than previously-reported standard ZnGa2O4. The enhanced affinity for CO2 molecules of the resultant ZnGa2O4 leads to highly-selective CO evolution in CO2 photo-reduction with H2O reductants. The present scheme is promising to achieve desirable surface chemistry on metal oxide photocatalysts.

Abstract
Selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes to arylamines is a great challenge because of the complicated mechanism and competitive hydrogenation of reducible functional groups. Isolated single-atomic site catalysts, benefitting from their uniform and well-defined catalytic sites, are promising to achieve high activity and selectivity. Herein, we prepared an isolated iron single-atomic catalyst supported on ordered mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe1/N-C). The as-prepared Fe1/N-C showed excellent activity and tolerance for functional groups in the transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes over hydrazine hydrate. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the single atomically dispersed, partially positively charged Fe atoms and the lowered energy barrier collectively contribute to the superior hydrogenation performances for nitroarenes.

Abstract
The interfacial structure of metal-oxide composite catalysts plays a vital role in heterogeneous catalysis, which is crucial to the adsorption and activation of reactants. Herein, the interfacial effects of bare and Fe/Co/Ni doped SmMn2O5 mullite oxide supported Pt clusters on CO oxidation have been investigated by first-principles based microkinetics analysis. A robust formation of Pt/Mn2 trimer structures is demonstrated at the bifunctional interfaces irrespective of the Ptn cluster's size, which can provide spatially separated sites for CO adsorption and O2 dissociation. The binding strength of CO at the interfacial Pt sites is in the optimal range due to the charge transfer from Pt clusters to oxide, while the strong polarization of Mn2 dimers induced by Pt clusters with stable three-dimensional morphologies can lower the energy barrier of O2 dissociation. Based on the microkinetics analysis, the O2 dissociation is the rate-determining step in the full CO oxidation cycle, and the introduction of Mn-Fe hetero-dimers at the interface is predicted to further enhance the low temperature CO oxidation activity of Pt/SmMn2O5 catalysts.

Abstract
In this work, gold nanoparticles protected by the macrocycle cucurbit[7]uril were used as a catalyst in the reduction of the hazardous antimicrobial nitrofurantoin. 4-Nitrophenol was also employed as the substrate of the reduction for comparative purposes. The kinetic data were modeled to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation to know the affinities of the reactants for the surface and the real kinetic constants, a comparison at the molecular level that is made for the first time. From the results, it was observed that the adsorption of nitrofurantoin was stronger than that of 4-nitrophenol whilst the kinetic constant on the surface was higher for 4-nitrophenol than for nitrofurantoin. Additionally, shifts in the nanoparticle surface plasmon band permitted insights to be obtained into the adsorption rate and strength. The reaction induction times were also investigated and were highly dependent on the borohydride concentration and, due to the higher surface affinity of nitrofurantoin compared with 4-nitrophenol, an increase in nitrofurantoin concentration increased the induction time, while a lag phase was not observed for 4-nitrophenol.

Abstract
Co3O4 nanomaterials with diverse morphologies were usually synthesized in liquid phase accompanied by the template or surfactant under harsh conditions, which further restricted their practical application. Herein, we reported an extremely simple and practical solid-state chemical method to synthesize Co3O4-octahedrons, -plates, and -rods. Among these, the shape control of Co3O4-octahedrons and Co3O4-plates involve variation of the amount of reactant, and the formation of Co3O4-rods with {110} facet can be achieved by replacing the reactant. The formation of the Co3O4 nanomaterials with different morphologies originated from the different microenvironments of reaction and the structure of reactants. The catalytic activity of Co3O4 samples for CO oxidation was evaluated in normal feed gas. The as-prepared Co3O4-rods exposed {110} facet exhibited superior catalytic activity for CO oxidation, which can be attributed to more oxygen defects on Co3O4-rods surface. Additionally, Co3O4-rods exhibited excellent durablility (without pretreatment) in normal feed gas, even in the presence of moisture, comparable or better than that reported in the literature. The practical and environmental friendly solvent-free strategy provided a new promising route for large-scale preparation of (metal) oxide with remarkable CO oxidation performance for practical application.
