Large-scale multiferroic complex oxide epitaxy with magnetically switched polarization enabled by solution processing

Engineering Oxide Epitaxy beyond Substrate Constraint

Orientation engineering is a crucial aspect of thin film growth, and it is rather challenging to engineer film epitaxy beyond the substrate constraint. Guided by density functional theory calculations, we use SrRuO3 (SRO) as a buffer layer and successfully deposit [111]-oriented CoFe2O4 (CFO) on [001]-, [110]-, and [111]-oriented SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. This enables subsequent growth of [111]-oriented functional oxides, such as PbTiO3 (PTO), overcoming the constraint of the substrate. This strategy is quite general and applicable to lanthanum aluminate and yttria-stabilized zirconia substrates as well. X-ray Φ scans and atomic resolution aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM) reveal detailed epitaxial relations in each of the cases, with four variants of [111]-CFO found on [001]-STO and two variants found on [110]-STO, formed to mitigate the large lattice misfit strain between the film and substrate. Our strategy thus provides a general pathway for orientation engineering of oxide epitaxy beyond substrate constraint.

Conservation genomics provides insights into genetic resilience and adaptation of the endangered Chinese hazelnut, Corylus chinensis

Global climate change has increased concerns regarding biodiversity loss. However, many key conservation issues still required further research, including demographic history, deleterious mutation load, adaptive evolution, and putative introgression. Here we generated the first chromosome-level genome of the endangered Chinese hazelnut, Corylus chinensis, and compared the genomic signatures with its sympatric widespread C. kwechowensis-C. yunnanensis complex. We found large genome rearrangements across all Corylus species and identified species-specific expanded gene families that may be involved in adaptation. Population genomics revealed that both C. chinensis and the C. kwechowensis-C. yunnanensis complex had diverged into two genetic lineages, forming a consistent pattern of southwestern-northern differentiation. Population size of the narrow southwestern lineages of both species have decreased continuously since the late Miocene, whereas the widespread northern lineages have remained stable (C. chinensis) or have even recovered from population bottlenecks (C. kwechowensis-C. yunnanensis complex) during the Quaternary. Compared with C. kwechowensis-C. yunnanensis complex, C. chinensis showed significantly lower genomic diversity and higher inbreeding level. However, C. chinensis carried significantly fewer deleterious mutations than C. kwechowensis-C. yunnanensis complex, as more effective purging selection reduced the accumulation of homozygous variants. We also detected signals of positive selection and adaptive introgression in different lineages, which facilitated the accumulation of favorable variants and formation of local adaptation. Hence, both types of selection and exogenous introgression could have mitigated inbreeding and facilitated survival and persistence of C. chinensis. Overall, our study provides critical insights into lineage differentiation, local adaptation, and the potential for future recovery of endangered trees.

High-Throughput Scanning Second-Harmonic-Generation Microscopy for Polar Materials

The Materials Genome Initiative aims to discover, develop, manufacture, and deploy advanced materials at twice the speed of conventional approaches. To achieve this, high-throughput characterization is essential for the rapid screening of candidate materials. In this study, a high-throughput scanning second-harmonic-generation microscope with automatic partitioning, accurate positioning, and fast scanning is developed that can rapidly probe and screen polar materials. Using this technique, typical ferroelectrics, including periodically poled lithium niobate crystals and PbZr_0.2 Ti_0.8 O₃ (PZT) thin films are first investigated, whereby the microscopic domain structures are clearly revealed. This technique is then applied to a compositional-gradient (100-x)%BaTiO₃ -x%SrTiO₃ film and a thickness-gradient PZT film to demonstrate its high-throughput capabilities. Since the second-harmonic-generation signal is correlated with the macroscopic remnant polarization over the probed region determined by the laser spot, it is free of artifacts arising from leakage current and electrostatic interference, while materials' symmetries and domain structures must be carefully considered in the data analysis. It is believed that this work can help promote the high-throughput development of polar materials and contribute to the Materials Genome Initiative.

Achieving High-Temperature Multiferroism by Atomic Architecture

Materials with multiple order parameters, typically, in which ferroelectricity and magnetism are coupled, are illuminative for next-generation multifunctional electronics. However, searching for such single-phase multiferroics is challenging owing to antagonistic orbital occupancy and chemical bonding requirements for polarity and magnetism. Appropriate multiferroic candidates have been proposed, but their practical implementation is impeded by the low working temperature, weak coupling between ferroic orders, or antiparallel spin alignment in magnetic sublattices. Here, we report a family of single-phase multiferroic materials in which high-temperature magnetism and voltage-switchable ferroelectricity are coupled. Using pulsed laser deposition, we have fabricated single-crystalline thin films incorporating a uniformly percolated open-shell dⁿ framework, which are composed of Fe cations with B-site occupancy and exhibit long-range spin ordering into the displacive ferroelectric PbTiO₃ lattice, as demonstrated by atomically resolved chemical analysis. The tetragonal polar Pb(Ti_1-x,Fe_x)O₃ (PFT(x), x ≤ 0.10) family exhibits a switchable ferroelectric nature and magnetic interaction with a moderate coercive field of around 300 Oe at room temperature. Notably, the magnetic order even persists above 500 K, which is higher than already reported potential multiferroic candidates until now. Our strategy of merging a spin-ordered sublattice into inherent ferroelectrics via atomic occupancy engineering provides an available pathway for highly thermally stable multiferroic and spintronic applications.

Flexible strategy of epitaxial oxide thin films

Applying functional oxide thin films to flexible devices is of great interests within the rapid development of information technology. The challenges involve the contradiction between the high-temperature growth of high-quality oxide films and low melting point of the flexible supports. This review summarizes the developed methods to fabricate high-quality flexible oxide thin films with novel functionalities and applications. We start from the fabrication methods, e.g. direct growth on flexible buffered metal foils and layered mica, etching and transfer approach, as well as remote epitaxy technique. Then, various functionalities in flexible oxide films will be introduced, specifically, owing to the mechanical flexibility, some unique properties can be induced in flexible oxide films. Taking the advantages of the excellent physical properties, the flexible oxide films have been employed in various devices. Finally, future perspectives in this research field will be proposed to further develop this field from fabrication, functionality to device.

Highly Flexible Freestanding BaTiO3 -CoFe2 O4 Heteroepitaxial Nanostructure Self-Assembled with Room-Temperature Multiferroicity

Multiferroics with simultaneous electric and magnetic orderings are highly desirable for sensing, actuation, data storage, and bio-inspired systems, yet developing flexible materials with robust multiferroic properties at room temperature is a long-term challenge. Utilizing water-soluble Sr₃ Al₂ O₆ as a sacrificial layer, the authors have successfully self-assembled a freestanding BaTiO₃ -CoFe₂ O₄ heteroepitaxial nanostructure via pulse laser deposition, and confirmed its epitaxial growth in both out-of-plane and in-plane directions, with highly ordered CoFe₂ O₄ nanopillars embedded in a single crystalline BaTiO₃ matrix free of substrate constraint. The freestanding nanostructure enjoys super flexibility and mechanical integrity, not only capable of spontaneously curving into a roll, but can also be bent with a radius as small as 4.23 µm. Moreover, piezoelectricity and ferromagnetism are demonstrated at both microscopic and macroscopic scales, confirming its robust multiferroicity at room temperature. This work establishes an effective route for flexible multiferroic materials, which have the potential for various practical applications.

Probing Ultrafast Dynamics of Ferroelectrics by Time-Resolved Pump-Probe Spectroscopy

Ferroelectric materials have been a key research topic owing to their wide variety of modern electronic and photonic applications. For the quick exploration of higher operating speed, smaller size, and superior efficiencies of novel ferroelectric devices, the ultrafast dynamics of ferroelectrics that directly reflect their respond time and lifetimes have drawn considerable attention. Driven by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy that allows for probing, controlling, and modulating dynamic processes of ferroelectrics in real-time, much research efforts have been made to understand and exploit the ultrafast dynamics of ferroelectric. Herein, the current state of ultrafast dynamic features of ferroelectrics tracked by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy is reviewed, which includes ferroelectrics order parameters of polarization, lattice, spin, electronic excitation, and their coupling. Several potential perspectives and possible further applications combining ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy and ferroelectrics are also presented. This review offers a clear guidance of ultrafast dynamics of ferroelectric orders, which may promote the rapid development of next-generation devices.

A multiaxial lead-free two-dimensional organic-inorganic perovskite ferroelectric

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have recently gained tremendous interest because of their unique features in contrast to three-dimensional counterparts and traditional 2D materials. However, although some 2D HOIP ferroelectrics have been achieved, the issue of toxic Pb and uniaxial nature impede their further application. Herein, for the first time, we report a lead-free 2D HOIP multiaxial ferroelectric, [3,3-difluorocyclobutylammonium]2CuCl4 (1), which shows four ferroelectric axes and eight equivalent polarization directions, more than those of the other 2D HOIP ferroelectrics and even the inorganic perovskite ferroelectric BaTiO3 (three ferroelectric axes and six equivalent polarization directions). 1 also features a high Curie temperature of 380 K and exhibits remarkable thermochromism of color change from green-yellow to dark brown. To our knowledge, 1 is the first multiaxial lead-free 2D HOIP ferroelectric. This work sheds light on the exploration of better lead-free 2D HOIP ferroelectrics.
