Evaluation of the Association Between Sedentary Time and Low Work Engagement in the Work Environment After COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study of Japanese Workers

Introduction The global shift toward working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to concerns about increased sedentary behavior and its potential impact on work engagement, a critical factor for employee well-being and organizational productivity. This study aims to explore the association between sedentary time and work engagement among workers in Japan in the post-pandemic work environment. Methods This cross-sectional analysis utilized data from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey (JACSIS), conducted from September to November 2023, after the COVID-19 pandemic period. Participants included employed individuals over 18 years, excluding those in domestic occupations. Sedentary time and work engagement were self-reported and categorized. Logistic regression analysis adjusted for confounders such as socioeconomic status, work characteristics, and mental and physical health was employed to explore this association. Results The study found a significant association between longer sedentary time and lower levels of work engagement. In particular, for desk workers, longer sedentary time was associated with lower work engagement (sedentary time, compared to the reference category "<4 hours/day", 4 to <8 h: OR 1.42, 95% CI: 1.25-1.60; 8 to <12 h: OR 1.77, 95% CI: 1.55-2.01; ≥12 h or unknown: OR 2.14, 95% CI: 1.80-2.51, respectively). Sensitivity analysis confirmed that these results are robust to different definitions of work engagement. Furthermore, analyses in subgroups of desk workers classified according to specific characteristics suggested that desk workers who are full-time workers in non-managerial positions and work from home ≥4 days per week were more strongly associated with prolonged sedentary behavior and low work engagement (in the group of full-time workers who were non-managers, sedentary time, compared to the reference category "<4 hours/day", 4 to <8 h: OR 2.14, 95% CI: 1.52-3.00; 8 to <12 h: OR 2.10, 95% CI: 1.46-3.00; ≥12 h or unknown: OR 3.32, 95% CI: 1.99-6.05; in those with work-from-home frequency of ≥4 days weekly, sedentary time, compared to the reference category "<4 hours/day", 4 to <8 h: OR 1.46, 95% CI: 0.99-2.16; 8 to <12 h: OR 1.73, 95% CI: 1.19-2.56; ≥12 h or unknown: OR 2.41, 95% CI: 1.58-3.67). Conclusions This study revealed a significant association between sedentary time and low work engagement among workers in Japan after the COVID-19 pandemic. In the future, prospective studies are needed to confirm the causal associations between the two, using more validated measures of sedentary behavior.

Factors influencing work engagement among male nurses: A structural equation model

To investigate the male nurses' engagement in nursing work and the influencing factors.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 13 hospitals in China to collect data from 328 male nurses from August to October 2021. A structural equation model design was tested with validated measurement instruments.

RESULTS

The work engagement of male nurses in China was at a medium level. There was a high correlation of the male nurses' work engagement with career identity (r = 0.764, p < 0.01), career success (r = 0.735, p < 0.01) and social support (r = 0.477, p < 0.01). The linear multivariate regression analysis showed that career satisfaction (β = 0.393), career identity (β = 0.392) and subjective support (β = 0.116) entered regression equation of male nurses' work engagement (all p < 0.05). The structural equation model results showed that career identity and social support were the influencing factors of the male nurses' work engagement and the model explained variation of 66.4% variables.

CONCLUSION

To know the male nurses' work engagement and influencing factors in China has certain enlightening significance for male nurses themselves and nursing manager. On the one hand, it is necessary to enhance the male nurses' career recognition to nursing work. On the other hand, the society should provide more aid and support to the male nurses. Therefore, the male nurses could devote more into nursing work and promote the nursing development.

The relationship of work engagement with job experience, marital status and having children among flexible workers after the Covid-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about serious consequences in business world practices. Among these, flexible working policies have increased to a great extent. This has resulted in serious problems in the work-life balance. In this context, conditions such as having children and marital status have been important factors that can affect work engagement among flexible workers in the post pandemic era. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship of marital status, job experience and having children with work engagement among white-collar workers who work in flexible hours. Data is collected through surveys from 199 flexible working employees. ANOVA and T-tests were employed to analyze the data. The results indicate that only one of the sub-dimensions of work engagement-namely absorption- changes according to their marital status, and yet, the work engagement is not related to having children. In addition, it is seen that there is a significant relationship between job experience and work engagement.

Linking Transformational and Despotic Leadership to Employee Engagement: Unfolding the Role of Psychological Distress as a Mediator

This research investigates the antecedents of employee engagement in Pakistan’s banks to conceptualize the idea of employee engagement. For this, the study examines the relationship between transformational leadership (TL), despotic leadership (DL), and the mediation of psychological distress (PD) with an outcome variable, employee engagement (EE). The study focused on first-line bank managers based in Punjab province using a cluster sampling technique. A questionnaire survey was used, and 341 respondents were selected for analysis using PLS-SEM. The study’s findings confirmed that all seven hypotheses tested were statistically significant. The results revealed that the transforming role of transformational leadership is more effective than despotic leadership in promoting employee engagement. The indirect link of psychological distress between transformational leadership, despotic leadership, and employee engagement also acts vice versa. The current study findings have implications for advancing our understanding of the effects of transformational leadership because of their positivity, which can reduce psychological distress and increase employee engagement in the service sector. In contrast, despotic leadership undermines employees’ abilities by increasing psychological distress and disengagement among employees. Our findings will help the banking industry understand how despotic and transformational leadership can negatively and positively affect employee outcomes.

Predictors of Psychological Distress and Mental Health Resource Utilization among Employees in Malaysia

We sought to examine predictors of psychological distress among employees as well as the level of awareness and usage of available mental health resources by employees through their own organizations. The Malaysian Healthiest Workplace survey cross-sectional dataset was used to explore the association between psychological distress, a range of health conditions, as well as mental health resource awareness and usage in a sample of 11,356 working Malaysian adults. A multivariate logistic regression was conducted to determine predictors of high psychological distress. Comorbid illnesses that were associated with psychological distress were mental illness (OR 6.7, 95% CI 4.39-10.14, p = 0.001), heart conditions (OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.18-3.99, p = 0.012), migraines (OR 1.59, 95% CI 1.33-1.90, p = 0.001), bronchial asthma (OR 1.43, 95% CI 1.11-1.85, p = 0.006), and hypertension (OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.07-1.88, p = 0.016) compared to individuals with no comorbid conditions. A total of 14 out of 17 comorbid medical illnesses were associated with elevated levels of psychological distress among employees. Awareness and usage of support services and resources for mental health were associated with lower psychological distress. These findings extend the literature by providing further evidence on the link between chronic illness, occupational type, as well as awareness and use of mental health resources by psychological distress status.
