Developments in the synthesis of LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si TL material

Synthesis and dosimetry features of novel sensitive thermoluminescent phosphor of LiF doped with Mg and Dy impurities

Lithium fluoride doped with Mg and Dy was fabricated for the first time using melting method. The optimum concentrations of impurities and thermal treatment were studied to achieve high thermoluminescence (TL) sensitivity. TL sensitivity of the fabricated phosphor is close to that of TLD-100 powder. T_m-T_stop technique was used to identify the number of overlapped TL glow peaks. Initial rise, isothermal decay and computerized glow curve deconvolution (CGCD) methods were applied to obtain kinetic parameters of the prepared TL material. Three component glow peaks were distinguished at temperatures 395, 448 and 510 K. Other TL properties such as fading, linearity of dose response and reusability are also presented and discussed.

Synthesis, thermoluminescence, defect center and dosimetric characteristics of LiF:Mg,Cu,P,Si phosphor

LiF:Mg,Cu,P,Si (MCPS), a new tissue equivalent phosphor, was synthesized by solid state method. Powder x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope were employed to determine the structural features. The dosimetric characteristics, electron spin resonance (ESR) and defect centers of this newly prepared phosphor were investigated. The MCPS phosphor is highly sensitive when compared with LiF:Mg,Ti and LiF:Mg,Cu,P (MCP), with the TL sensitivity being 35 times and 1.3 times higher respectively. The dosimetric peak occurs at 220°C with a well defined glow curve structure similar to MCP. MCPS phosphor shows a linear dose response till 10Gy. The minimum detectable dose has been found to be 8μGy. The thermal stability of the phosphor could be enhanced by 20°C from 240°C to 260°C when compared to MCP. Defect centers formed in the phosphor by gamma irradiation have been studied by ESR to identify the centers associated with the TL process in this phosphor. Thermal annealing experiments reveal the presence of several defect centers. Center I which shows an isotropic g factor of 2.0233 has been found to relate with the TL peaks at 160°C, 220°C and 265°C. Centers II and III are characterized by isotropic g values of 2.0096 and 2.0019 respectively and are attributed to F centers.

Investigation of Optically Stimulated Luminescence and Signal Fading Properties of Several Materials

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetry involves the illumination of an irradiated sample on an appropriate material to produce a stimulated emission of light, whose intensity is indicative of the radiation dose. This technique is currently used for personnel dosimetry, environmental dosimetry, and geological dating applications. While a great deal of published research focusing on α-Al2O3:C and natural materials used for geological dating exist, relatively little is known about the OSL properties of thermoluminescent (TL) materials. This paper reports the results of an experiment conducted to characterize the OSL behavior of KBr, CaSO4:Tm, CaSO4:Dy, CaSO4:Dy+P, LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si, and LiF:Mg,Cu,Si. The OSL signal responses to seven excitation wavelengths from 625 nm to 455 nm for each material were measured at 12 time periods post-irradiation from 6 h to 120 d. The magnitude and fading characteristics of the OSL response of each material were then analyzed. The data demonstrated that significant OSL responses exist for CaSO4:Tm, LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si, and LiF:Mg,Cu,Si. In addition, it was found that the fading rates of OSL signals depend on the excitation wavelength used to elicit the signals and that these fading rates and the corresponding excitation wavelengths correlate well with the material's TL behavior. Thus, the various fading rates with respect to the excitation wavelengths could be used to obtain temporal dose information.

On the roles of the dopants in LiF: Mg,Cu,Na,Si thermoluminescent material

In this paper, some results of the study on the roles of the dopants in the LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si thermoluminescent (TL) material that was developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute for radiation protection are presented. Although there have been many studies to investigate the roles of the dopants in LiF:Mg,Cu,P TL material in the TL process, there are some discrepancies in the understanding of the roles of Cu and P between various researchers. In case of LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si TL material, there are a few studies on the roles of the dopants. Three kinds of samples in each of which one dopant is excluded, and the optimised sample, were prepared for this study. The measurements and analysis of the three-dimensional TL spectra, based on the temperature, wavelength and intensity, and the glow curves for those samples are used in this study. The results show that Mg plays a role in the trapping of the charge carriers and Cu plays a role in the luminescence recombination process; however, the effect of Na and Si on the glow curve structure and the TL emission spectra is much less than that of Mg and Cu. It is considered that Na and Si each plays a role in the improvement of the luminescence efficiency.
