Intercomparison of Monte Carlo radiation transport codes to model TEPC response in low-energy neutron and gamma-ray fields

A comprehensive Monte Carlo simulation of the neutron response of multi-element microdosimetric detectors based on THick Gas Electron Multiplier

We present comprehensive Monte Carlo simulations for the neutron response of the multi-element microdosimetric detector based on THick Gas Electron Multiplier (THGEM). Simulations were carried out using the MCNP6.2 code to calculate the deposited energy spectrum in the gaseous sensitive volumes for three different configurations, 7 × 3, 19 × 5, 37 × 7 that occupy a cylindrical volume of 5-cm diameter by 5-cm length. The energy response was computed from 10 keV to 2 MeV. The response variation was investigated between sensitive volumes as well as between layers. The simulated energy response showed a good agreement against the evaluated fluence-to-kerma conversion coefficients in the energy region 10-100 keV, whereas discrepancies were observed in the region above 250 keV. The angular response simulations showed a variation of less than 10%.

Characterization of a new tissue equivalent proportional counter for dosimetry of neutron and photon fields: comparison of measurements and Monte Carlo simulations

The tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) is widely recognized as an important dosimetric technique particularly for complex radiation fields. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has recently developed a new spherical TEPC to monitor the space radiation environment in the low earth orbit. The purpose of this study is to examine the performance of the TEPC against standard photon (¹³⁷Cs) and neutron (²⁵²Cf) sources through ground-based measurements and Monte Carlo simulations prior to its actual implementation. Lineal energy distributions, microdosimetric spectra and dosimetric quantities for a 2 µm simulated site in pure propane gas were determined for both sources. Both the measured and calculated ¹³⁷Cs spectra were shown to occur below 11 keV µm^-1 that is the typical range covered by photon sources. Complete coincidence of their electron edge regions was also observed. Meanwhile, the proton edge from the measured ²⁵²Cf spectra was found to be in good agreement with those from the simulated ones and the literature. The gamma, recoil proton and heavy ions peaks expected for neutron sources were well defined, albeit deviations in the gamma region. The absorbed dose and dose equivalent for both irradiation conditions were also successfully obtained. The dose equivalent for ²⁵²Cf was found to be ten times the absorbed dose whereas it remained the same for ¹³⁷Cs. The discrepancies observed in the low lineal energy region for both irradiation conditions were caused by intrinsic limitations on the experimental set-up and simulation configurations. This mainly contributed to a difference in the measured and calculated dose mean lineal energies of about 4.1% and 8.7% for the photon and neutron cases, respectively. Nevertheless, fair consistency with published data suggested that our TEPC could adequately reproduce the expected microdosimetric distributions for complex radiation fields.

Monte Carlo Simulations Comparing the Response of a Novel Hemispherical Tepc to Existing Spherical and Cylindrical Tepcs for Neutron Monitoring and Dosimetry

Neutron dosimetry in reactor fields is currently mainly conducted with unwieldy flux monitors. Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counters (TEPCs) have been shown to have the potential to improve the accuracy of neutron dosimetry in these fields, and Multi-Element Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counters (METEPCs) could reduce the size of instrumentation required to do so. Complexity of current METEPC designs has inhibited their use beyond research. This work proposes a novel hemispherical counter with a wireless anode ball in place of the traditional anode wire as a possible solution for simplifying manufacturing. The hemispherical METEPC element was analyzed as a single TEPC to first demonstrate the potential of this new design by evaluating its performance relative to the reference spherical TEPC design and a single element from a cylindrical METEPC. Energy deposition simulations were conducted using the Monte Carlo code PHITS for both monoenergetic 2.5 MeV neutrons and the neutron energy spectrum of Cf-D2O moderated. In these neutron fields, the hemispherical counter appears to be a good alternative to the reference spherical geometry, performing slightly better than the cylindrical counter, which tends to underrespond to H*(10) for the lower neutron energies of the Cf-D2O moderated field. These computational results are promising, and if follow-up experimental work demonstrates the hemispherical counter works as anticipated, it will be ready to be incorporated into an METEPC design.
