Abstract
Accurately distinguishing stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for diagnosis and treatment. In this paper, we introduce a stacking classifier method that combines six single classifiers into a stacking classifier. Using brain network models and network metrics, we employ t-tests to identify abnormal brain regions, from which we construct a subnetwork and extract its features to form the training dataset. Our method is then applied to the ADNI (Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative) datasets, categorizing the stages into four categories: Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), mixed Alzheimer's mild cognitive impairment (ADMCI), and healthy controls (HCs). We investigate four classification groups: AD-HCs, AD-MCI, HCs-ADMCI, and HCs-MCI. Finally, we compare the classification accuracy between a single classifier and our stacking classifier, demonstrating superior accuracy with our stacking classifier from a subnetwork-based viewpoint.

Abstract
Childhood and adolescence are sensitive periods for the refinement of increasingly complex executive and social functions. A particularly important skill is the ability to navigate and interpret interpersonal relationships, which is reflected in part by the maturation of distributed resting networks. However, the relationships between negative social perceptions in youth and long-term alterations in between-network connectivity are limited. To partially address this gap, we utilized longitudinal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (N = 93) with social pain measures from the NIH Toolbox Emotion Battery to determine the links between negative social perceptions on the trajectory of connectivity between the salience, frontoparietal, and default mode networks in the triple network model of psychopathology. Higher scores of perceived hostility, but not perceived rejection, tended to increase functional connectivity between the salience and both frontoparietal and default mode networks over time. These results suggest that more direct forms of threat (hostility) may be more impactful than rejection (limited desired social interactions), highlighting the importance of a dimensional approach to understanding developmental trajectories. While these connectivity changes align with several aberrant connectivity signatures observed across mental health disorders, these phenotypes are not pathognomonic of psychopathology and may reflect adaptive mechanisms in the context of social adversity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is linked to abnormalities in brain networks. Resting-state functional connectivity (FC), as measured using resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI), is a crucial tool for exploring the brain network abnormalities associated with depressive symptoms, as it reveals how disruptions in brain region interactions occur. However, research focusing on adolescents with depression is limited and inconsistent, highlighting the need for further studies in this area. METHODS Fifty-five adolescents with Depressive episodes (DE) and 26 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state fMRI. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17). Seed regions were defined based on Yeo's seven-network scheme, including the sensorimotor network (SMN), ventral attention network (VAN), dorsal attention network (DAN), visual network (VN), frontoparietal network (FPN), default mode network (DMN), and limbic network (LN). These seed regions were derived from analysis of large-scale FC in healthy individuals, and were selected for their relevance to cognition, emotion, and depression research. Network-based statistical analyses were used to compare the adolescents with DE to the HCs, and correlation analyses were employed to examine the relationships between FC changes and cognitive performance. RESULTS The results showed significant differences in FC between the DE and HCs groups, involving 17 nodes and 17 edges across seven networks. Decreased FC was observed within the FPN, as well as between the FPN and VAN, the FPN and DMN, and the SMN and both the DAN and VN. Increased FC was observed between the FPN and VN, between the DAN and other networks (i.e., the DMN and FPN), and between the SMN and multiple networks. Notably, FC between the right superior parietal (SMN) and right precuneus (DMN) showed a negative correlation with HAMD-17 scores. CONCLUSION These results suggest that adolescents with DE experience widespread brain network abnormalities characterized by hypoactivity in external networks such as the SMN and VN, as well as hyperactivity in associative regions, including the DMN, FPN, SMN, and LN. Although these changes in FC are evident, the specific mechanisms linking them to clinical symptoms remain unclear and warrant further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression, anxiety and loneliness are common among older patients. As a potential psychological buffer against these challenges, meaning in life (MIL) remains underexplored in longitudinal studies within this population. This study aims to examine the longitudinal relationship of MIL with depression, anxiety, and loneliness among older adults with multimorbidity in Hong Kong. METHODS In a prospective cohort of 1077 primary care patients aged 60 or above with multimorbidity in Hong Kong, MIL was assessed using an item from the Chinese Purpose in Life test at baseline, the 1st follow-up (median: 1.3 years), and the 2nd follow-up (median: 3.1 years). Depression, anxiety, and loneliness were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and De Jong Gierveld Loneliness scales, respectively, at each time point. Cross-lagged relationships between MIL and these measures were examined using cross-lagged panel models. RESULTS Participants had an average age of 70.0 years, with 70.1% being female. Higher MIL predicted lower depression (β = -0.15), anxiety (β = -0.13), overall loneliness (β = -0.18), emotional loneliness (β = -0.15), and social loneliness (β = -0.16) at the 1st follow-up. Additionally, higher MIL predicted lower overall loneliness (β = -0.12), emotional loneliness (β = -0.11), and social loneliness (β = -0.10) at the 2nd follow-up. At baseline, higher depression (β = -0.21), overall loneliness (β = -0.15), emotional loneliness (β = -0.11), and social loneliness (β = -0.11), but not anxiety, predicted lower MIL at the 1st follow-up. At the 1st follow-up, depression (β = -0.23), anxiety (β = -0.16), overall loneliness (β = -0.10), and emotional loneliness (β = -0.11), but not social loneliness, predicted lower MIL at the 2nd follow-up. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest a bidirectional relationship between MIL and mental health outcomes in older patients with multimorbidity in Hong Kong. Emotional loneliness demonstrated a more consistent bidirectional association with MIL than social loneliness. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and develop targeted interventions addressing both MIL and mental health problems.

Abstract
Social comparisons are a core feature of human life. Theories posit that social comparisons play a critical role in depression and social anxiety triggering negative evaluations about the self, as well as negative emotions. We investigated the neural basis of social comparisons in participants with major depression and/or social anxiety (MD-SA, n = 56) and healthy controls (n = 47) using functional magnetic resonance imaging. While being scanned participants performed a social comparison task, during which they received feedback about their performance and the performance of a coplayer. Upward social comparisons (being worse than the coplayer) elicited high levels of negative emotions (shame, guilt, and nervousness) across participants, with this effect being enhanced in the MD-SA group. Notably, during upward comparison the MD-SA group showed greater activation than the control group in regions of the default mode network (DMN). Specifically, for upward comparison MD-SA participants demonstrated increased activation in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex and reduced deactivation in the posteromedial cortex, regions linked to self-referential processing, inferences about other people's thoughts, and rumination. Findings suggest that people with depression and social anxiety react to upward comparisons with a more negative emotional response, which may be linked to introspective processes related to the DMN.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Identifying variables linked to distinct suicide outcomes has long been among suicidology's research priorities. Cognitive theories of suicide identify attentional processes that may vary for individuals at a greater suicide risk. However, an overreliance on self-report and objective measures that are poor estimates of attention has led to mixed findings. METHOD The current study utilizes eye tracking with a novel passive viewing task to explore differences in viewing patterns for suicide- and neutral-image pairings, as a function of suicide outcomes. Young adults (N = 124, 83.9% women) were oversampled for recent suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and completed a series of self-report questionnaires specific to suicide history, as well as relevant covariates prior to completing the eye-tracking task. RESULTS Multilevel modeling revealed that individuals with low-to-moderate ratings of past-year ideation displayed a significant decline in the amount of time spent viewing suicide images as compared to neutral images over the course of the task (oculomotor avoidance). However, the same pattern was not seen among individuals with high suicide ideation, specifically those with resolved plans and preparation. Furthermore, no differences were found between people with and without a suicide attempt history. CONCLUSION These results suggest a suicide-specific disengagement bias among individuals high in suicide ideation and more specifically, resolved plans and preparation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The suicide rate for United States military veterans is 1.5× higher than that of non-veterans. To meaningfully advance suicide prevention efforts, research is needed to delineate factors that differentiate veterans with suicide attempt/s, particularly in high-risk groups, e.g., major depressive disorder (MDD), from those with suicidal ideation (no history of attempt/s). The current study aimed to identify clinical, neurocognitive, and neuroimaging variables that differentiate suicide-severity groups in veterans with MDD. METHODS Sixty-eight veterans with a DSM-5 diagnosis of MDD, including those with no ideation or suicide attempt (N = 21; MDD-SI/SA), ideation-only (N = 17; MDD + SI), and one-or-more suicide attempts (N = 30; MDD + SA; aborted, interrupted, actual attempts), participated in this study. Participants underwent a structured diagnostic interview, neurocognitive assessment, and 3 T-structural/diffusion tensor magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI). Multinomial logistic regression models were conducted to identify variables that differentiated groups with respect to the severity of suicidal behavior. RESULTS Relative to veterans with MDD-SI/SA, those with MDD + SA had significantly higher left cingulum fractional anisotropy, decreased attentional control on emotional-Stroop, and faster response time with intact accuracy on Go/No-Go. Relative to MDD + SI, MDD + SA had higher left cingulum fractional anisotropy and faster response time with intact accuracy on Go/No-Go. LIMITATIONS Findings are based on retrospective, cross-sectional data and cannot identify causal relationships. Also, a healthy control group was not included given the study's focus on differentiating suicide profiles in MDD. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that MRI and neurocognition differentiate veterans with MDD along the suicide-risk spectrum and could inform suicide-risk stratification and prevention efforts in veterans and other vulnerable populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anhedonia is an enduring symptom of subthreshold depression (StD) and predict later onset of major depressive disorder (MDD). Brain structural covariance describes the inter-regional distribution of morphological changes compared to healthy controls (HC) and reflects brain maturation and disease progression. We investigated neural correlates of anhedonia from the structural covariance. METHODS T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance images were acquired from 79 young adults (26 StD, 30 MDD, and 23 HC). Intra-individual structural covariance networks of 68 cortical surface area (CSAs), 68 cortical thicknesses (CTs), and 14 subcortical volumes were constructed. Group-level hubs and principal edges were defined using the global and regional graph metrics, compared between groups, and examined for the association with anhedonia severity. RESULTS Global network metrics were comparable among the StD, MDD, and HC. StD exhibited lower centralities of left pallidal volume than HC. StD showed higher centralities than HC in the CSAs of right rostral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and pars triangularis, and in the CT of left pars orbitalis. Less anhedonia was associated with higher centralities of left pallidum and right amygdala, higher edge betweenness centralities in the structural covariance (EBSC) of left postcentral gyrus-parahippocampal gyrus and LIPL-right amygdala. More anhedonia was associated with higher centralities of left inferior parietal lobule (LIPL), left postcentral gyrus, left caudal ACC, and higher EBSC of LIPL-left postcentral gyrus, LIPL-right lateral occipital gyrus, and left caudal ACC-parahippocampal gyrus. LIMITATIONS This study has a cross-sectional design. CONCLUSIONS Structural covariance of brain morphologies within the salience and limbic networks, and among the salience-limbic-default mode-somatomotor-visual networks, are possible neural correlates of anhedonia in depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is linked to cognitive biases towards more negative and less positive self-relevant information. Rumination, perseverative negative thinking about the past and the self, may contribute to these biases. METHODS 159 adolescents (12-18 years), with a range of depression symptoms, completed the SRET during fMRI. Multiple regressions tested associations between conventional self-report and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) measured rumination, and neural and behavioral responses during a self-referent encoding task (SRET). RESULTS Higher rumination (conventional self-report and EMA) was associated with more negative and fewer positive words endorsed and recalled. Higher self-reported (but not EMA) rumination was associated with higher accuracy in recognizing negative words and greater insula and dorsal anterior cingulate activity to negative versus positive words. LIMITATIONS The sample included mostly non-Hispanic White participants with household incomes above the national average, highlighting the need for replication in more diverse samples. Word endorsement discrepancies required fMRI analyses to model neural response to viewing negative versus positive words. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with higher rumination endorsed and recalled more negative and fewer positive words and recognized more negative words during the SRET. Higher insula reactivity, a key region for modulating externally-oriented attention and internally-oriented self-referential processes, may contribute to links between rumination and negative memory biases. These findings provide insight into neurocognitive mechanisms underlying depression.

Abstract
Treatment outcomes widely vary for individuals diagnosed with major depressive disorder, implicating a need for deeper understanding of the biological mechanisms conferring a greater likelihood of response to a particular treatment. Our improved understanding of intrinsic brain networks underlying depression psychopathology via magnetic resonance imaging and other neuroimaging modalities has helped reveal novel and potentially clinically meaningful biological markers of response. And while we have made considerable progress in identifying such biomarkers over the last decade, particularly with larger, multisite trials, there are significant methodological and practical obstacles that need to be overcome to translate these markers into the clinic. The aim of this review is to review current literature on brain network structural and functional biomarkers of treatment response or selection in depression, with a specific focus on recent large, multisite trials reporting predictive accuracy of candidate biomarkers. Regarding pharmaco- and psychotherapy, we discuss candidate biomarkers, reporting that while we have identified candidate biomarkers of response to a single intervention, we need more trials that distinguish biomarkers between first-line treatments. Further, we discuss the ways prognostic neuroimaging may help to improve treatment outcomes to neuromodulation-based therapies, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and deep brain stimulation. Lastly, we highlight obstacles and technical developments that may help to address the knowledge gaps in this area of research. Ultimately, integrating neuroimaging-derived biomarkers into clinical practice holds promise for enhancing treatment outcomes and advancing precision psychiatry strategies for depression management. By elucidating the neural predictors of treatment response and selection, we can move towards more individualized and effective depression interventions, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

Abstract
Social comparison is central in human life and can be especially challenging in depression and social anxiety. We assessed event-related potentials and emotions using a social comparison task in which participants received feedback on both their own and a co-player's performance, in participants with depression and/or social anxiety (n = 63) and healthy controls (n = 72). Participants reported more negative emotions for downward (being better than the co-player [participant correct, co-player wrong]) and upward (being worse than the co-player [participant wrong, co-player correct]) comparisons versus even outcomes, with these effects being stronger in depression and social anxiety. At the Medial Frontal Negativity, both controls and depressed participants showed a more negative amplitude for upward comparison versus both the participant and co-player performing wrong. Socially anxious subjects showed the opposite effect, possibly due to greater expectations about being worse than others. The P300 decreased for downward and upward comparisons compared to even outcomes, which may relate to the higher levels of conflict of social inequality. Depressed and socially anxious subjects showed a blunted P300 increase over time in response to the task outcomes, suggesting deficits in allocating resources for the attention of incoming social information. The LPP showed increased amplitude for downward and upward comparison versus the even outcomes and no group effect. Emotional findings suggest that social comparisons are more difficult for depressed and socially anxious individuals. Event-related potentials findings may shed light on the neural substrates of these difficulties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (task-fMRI) investigations have documented abnormal brain activation associated with subclinical depression (SD), defined as a clinically relevant level of depressive symptoms that does not meet the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder. However, these task-fMRI studies have not reported consistent conclusions. Performing a voxel-based meta-analysis of task-fMRI studies may yield reliable findings. METHODS We extracted the peak coordinates and t values of included studies and analyzed brain activation between individuals with SD and healthy controls (HCs) using anisotropic effect-size signed differential mapping (AES-SDM). RESULTS A systematic literature search identified eight studies, including 266 individuals with SD and 281 HCs (aged 14 to 25). The meta-analysis showed that individuals with SD exhibited significantly greater activation in the right lenticular nucleus and putamen according to task-fMRI. The meta-regression analysis revealed a negative correlation between the proportion of females in a group and activation in the right striatum. LIMITATIONS The recruitment criteria for individuals with SD, type of tasks and MRI acquisition parameters of included studies were heterogeneous. The results should be interpreted cautiously due to insufficient included studies. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that individuals with SD exhibit increased activation in the right lenticular nucleus, putamen and striatum, which may indicate a compensatory increase in response to an impairment of insular and striatal function caused by depression. These results provide valuable insights into the potential pathophysiology of brain dysfunction in SD.

Abstract
Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders worldwide, affecting approximately 280 million people, with probably much higher unrecorded cases. Depression is associated with symptoms such as anhedonia, feelings of hopelessness, sleep disturbances, and even suicidal thoughts. Tragically, more than 700 000 people commit suicide each year. Although depression has been studied for many decades, the exact mechanisms that lead to depression are still unknown, and available treatments only help a fraction of patients. In the late 1960s, the serotonin hypothesis was published, suggesting that serotonin is the key player in depressive disorders. However, this hypothesis is being increasingly doubted as there is evidence for the influence of other neurotransmitters, such as noradrenaline, glutamate, and dopamine, as well as larger systemic causes such as altered activity in the limbic network or inflammatory processes. In this narrative review, we aim to contribute to the ongoing debate on the involvement of serotonin in depression. We will review the evolution of antidepressant treatments, systemic research on depression over the years, and future research applications that will help to bridge the gap between systemic research and neurotransmitter dynamics using biosensors. These new tools in combination with systemic applications, will in the future provide a deeper understanding of the serotonergic dynamics in depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both ruminative thought processes and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well-established risk factors for the emergence and maintenance of depression. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these associations remain poorly understood. METHODS We examined resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data (3 T Tim Trio MR scanner; Siemens, Erlangen) of 44 individuals diagnosed with an acute depressive episode. Specifically, we focused on investigating functional brain activity and connectivity within and between three large-scale neural networks associated with processes affected in depression: the default mode network (DMN), the salience network (SN), and the central executive network (CEN). Correlational and regression-based analyses were performed. RESULTS Our regions of interest analyses revealed that region-specific spontaneous neural activity in the anterior DMN was associated with self-reported trait rumination, specifically, the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex (pgACC). Furthermore, using a liberal statistical threshold, we found that spontaneous neural activity of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and the pgACC were associated with depression symptom severity. Neither spontaneous neural activity in the SN and CEN nor functional connectivity within and across the investigated networks was associated with depression severity or rumination. Furthermore, there was no association between ACEs and brain activity and connectivity. LIMITATIONS Lack of a formal control group or low-risk group for comparison. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our results indicate network-specific changes in spontaneous brain activity, that are linked to both depression severity and rumination. Findings underscore the crucial role of the pgACC in depression and contribute to a dimensional and symptom-based understanding of depression-related network imbalances.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms by which microRNA 124 (miR-124) is involved in major depressive disorder (MDD). We enrolled 53 untreated MDD patients and 38 healthy control (HC) subjects who completed behavior assessments and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) scans. MiR-124 expression levels were detected in the peripheral blood of all participants. We determined that miR-124 levels could influence depressive symptoms via disrupted large-scale intrinsic intra- and internetwork connectivity, including the default mode network (DMN)-DMN, dorsal attention network (DAN)-salience network (SN), and DAN-cingulo-opercular network (CON). This study deepens our understanding of how miR-124 dysregulation contributes to depression.

Abstract
Previous resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) research has identified several brain networks impacted by depression and cortisol, including default mode (DMN), frontoparietal (FPN), and salience networks (SN). In the present study, we examined the effects of cortisol administration on rsFC of these networks in individuals varying in depression history and severity. We collected resting-state fMRI scans and self-reported depression symptom severity for 74 women with and without a history of depression after cortisol and placebo administration using a double-blind, crossover design. We conducted seed-based rsFC analyses for DMN, FPN, and SN seeds to examine rsFC changes after cortisol vs. placebo administration in relation to depression history group and severity. Results revealed a main effect of depression group, with lower left amygdala (SN)-middle temporal gyrus connectivity in women with a history of depression. Cortisol administration increased insula (SN)-inferior frontal gyrus and superior temporal gyrus connectivity. We also found that greater depression severity was associated with increased PCC (DMN)-cerebellum connectivity after cortisol. These results did not survive Bonferroni correction for seed ROIs and should be interpreted with caution. Our findings indicate that acute cortisol elevation may normalize aberrant connectivity of DMN and SN regions, which could help inform clinical treatments for depression.

Abstract
It is posited that cognitive and affective dysfunction in patients with major depression disorder (MDD) may be caused by dysfunctional signal propagation in the brain. By leveraging dynamic causal modeling, we investigated large-scale directed signal propagation (effective connectivity) among distributed large-scale brain networks with 43 MDD patients and 56 healthy controls. The results revealed the existence of two mutual inhibitory systems: the anterior default mode network, auditory network, sensorimotor network, salience network and visual networks formed an "emotional" brain, while the posterior default mode network, central executive networks, cerebellum and dorsal attention network formed a "rational brain". These two networks exhibited excitatory intra-system connectivity and inhibitory inter-system connectivity. Patients were characterized by potentiated intra-system connections within the "emotional/sensory brain", as well as over-inhibition of the "rational brain" by the "emotional/sensory brain". The hierarchical architecture of the large-scale effective connectivity networks was then analyzed using a PageRank algorithm which revealed a shift of the controlling role of the "rational brain" to the "emotional/sensory brain" in the patients. These findings inform basic organization of distributed large-scale brain networks and furnish a better characterization of the neural mechanisms of depression, which may facilitate effective treatment.

Abstract
Emotional dysregulation such as that seen in depression, are a long-term consequence of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), that can be improved by using neuromodulation treatments such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Previous studies provide insights into the changes in functional connectivity related to general emotional health after the application of rTMS procedures in patients with TBI. However, these studies provide little understanding of the underlying neuronal mechanisms that drive the improvement of the emotional health in these patients. The current study focuses on inferring the effective (causal) connectivity changes and their association with emotional health, after rTMS treatment of cognitive problems in TBI patients (N = 32). Specifically, we used resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) together with spectral dynamic causal model (spDCM) to investigate changes in brain effective connectivity, before and after the application of high frequency (10 Hz) rTMS over left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. We investigated the effective connectivity of the cortico-limbic network comprised of 11 regions of interest (ROIs) which are part of the default mode, salience, and executive control networks, known to be implicated in emotional processing. The results indicate that overall, among extrinsic connections, the strength of excitatory connections decreased while that of inhibitory connections increased after the neuromodulation. The cardinal region in the analysis was dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) which is considered to be the most influenced during emotional health disorders. Our findings implicate the altered connectivity of dACC with left anterior insula and medial prefrontal cortex, after the application of rTMS, as a potential neural mechanism underlying improvement of emotional health. Our investigation highlights the importance of these brain regions as treatment targets in emotional processing in TBI.

Abstract
Individuals with remitted depression are at greater risk for subsequent depression and therefore may provide a unique opportunity to understand the neurophysiological correlates underlying the risk of depression. Research has identified abnormal resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) power metrics and functional connectivity patterns associated with major depression, however little is known about these neural signatures in individuals with remitted depression. We investigate the spectral dynamics of 64-channel EEG surface power and source-estimated network connectivity during resting states in 37 individuals with depression, 56 with remitted depression, and 49 healthy adults that did not differ on age, education, and cognitive ability across theta, alpha, and beta frequencies. Average reference spectral EEG surface power analyses identified greater left and midfrontal theta in remitted depression compared to healthy adults. Using Network Based Statistics, we also demonstrate within and between network alterations in LORETA transformed EEG source-space coherence across the default mode, fronto-parietal, and salience networks where individuals with remitted depression exhibited enhanced coherence compared to those with depression, and healthy adults. This work builds upon our currently limited understanding of resting EEG connectivity in depression, and helps bridge the gap between aberrant EEG power and brain network connectivity dynamics in this disorder. Further, our unique examination of remitted depression relative to both healthy and depressed adults may be key to identifying brain-based biomarkers for those at high risk for future, or subsequent depression.

Abstract
Although the identification of late adolescents with subthreshold depression (StD) may provide a basis for developing effective interventions that could lead to a reduction in the prevalence of StD and prevent the development of major depressive disorder, knowledge about the neural basis of StD remains limited. The purpose of this study was to develop a generalizable classifier for StD and to shed light on the underlying neural mechanisms of StD in late adolescents. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data of 91 individuals (30 StD subjects, 61 healthy controls) were included to build an StD classifier, and eight functional connections were selected by using the combination of two machine learning algorithms. We applied this biomarker to an independent cohort (n = 43) and confirmed that it showed generalization performance (area under the curve = 0.84/0.75 for the training/test datasets). Moreover, the most important functional connection was between the left and right pallidum, which may be related to clinically important dysfunctions in subjects with StD such as anhedonia and hyposensitivity to rewards. Investigation of whether modulation of the identified functional connections can be an effective treatment for StD may be an important topic of future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with various cognitive impairments, including response inhibition. Deficits in response inhibition may also underlie poor antidepressant treatment response. Recent studies revealed that the neurobiological correlates of response inhibition can predict response to pharmacological treatments. However, the generalizability of this finding to first-line nonpharmacological treatments, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, remains to be investigated. METHODS Data from two independent treatment protocols were combined, one in which 65 patients with MDD underwent treatment with escitalopram, and the other in which 41 patients with MDD underwent a course of cognitive behavioral therapy. A total of 25 healthy control subjects were also recruited. Neural correlates of response inhibition were captured by participants completing a Go/NoGo task during electroencephalography recording. Response inhibition-related measures of interest included the amplitudes of the N2 and P3 event-related potentials. RESULTS Pretreatment P3 amplitude, which has been linked to both the motor and cognitive aspects of response inhibition, was a significant predictor of change in depressive symptoms following escitalopram and cognitive behavioral therapy treatment. A greater pretreatment P3 amplitude was associated with a greater reduction in depressive severity. In addition, the pretreatment P3 amplitude was found to be significantly greater at baseline in remitters than in nonremitters and healthy control subjects. CONCLUSIONS The integrity of response inhibition may be critical for a successful course of pharmacological or psychological treatment for MDD. Electrophysiological correlates of response inhibition may have utility as a general prognostic marker of treatment response in MDD. Future studies may investigate the benefit of preceding first-line treatments with interventions that improve response inhibition in MDD.

Abstract
While information enriches daily life, it can also sometimes have a negative impact, depending on an individual's mental state. We recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) signals from depressed and non-depressed individuals classified based on the Beck Depression Inventory-II score while they listened to news to clarify differences in their attention to affective information and the impact of attentional bias on language processing. Results showed that depressed individuals are characterized by delayed attention to positive news and require a more increased load on language processing. The feasibility of detecting a depressed state using these EEG characteristics was evaluated by classifying individuals as depressed and non-depressed individuals. The area under the curve in the models trained by the EEG features used was 0.73. This result shows that individuals' mental states may be assessed based on EEG measured during daily activities like listening to news.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Delivery of effective antidepressant treatment has been hampered by a lack of objective tools for predicting or monitoring treatment response. This study aimed to address this gap by testing novel dynamic resting-state functional network markers of antidepressant response. METHODS The Establishing Moderators and Biosignatures of Antidepressant Response in Clinical Care (EMBARC) study randomized adults with major depressive disorder to 8 weeks of either sertraline or placebo, and depression severity was evaluated longitudinally. Participants completed resting-state neuroimaging pretreatment and again after 1 week of treatment (n = 259 eligible for analyses). Coactivation pattern analyses identified recurrent whole-brain states of spatial coactivation, and computed time spent in each state for each participant was the main dynamic measure. Multilevel modeling estimated the associations between pretreatment network dynamics and sertraline response and between early (pretreatment to 1 week) changes in network dynamics and sertraline response. RESULTS Dynamic network markers of early sertraline response included increased time in network states consistent with canonical default and salience networks, together with decreased time in network states characterized by coactivation of cingulate and ventral limbic or temporal regions. The effect of sertraline on depression recovery was mediated by these dynamic network changes. In contrast, early changes in dynamic functioning of corticolimbic and frontoinsular-default networks were related to patterns of symptom recovery common across treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS Dynamic resting-state markers of early antidepressant response or general recovery may assist development of clinical tools for monitoring and predicting effective intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cognitive deficits in Bipolar Disorder (BD) are significant enough to have an impact on daily functioning. Therefore, appropriate tools must be used to improve our understanding of the nature and severity of cognitive deficits in BD. In this study, we aimed to compare the cognitive profiles of patients with BD and healthy controls (HC) applying the Italian version of the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Affective Disorders (BAC-A). METHODS This cross-sectional study included 127 patients with BD and 134 HC. The participants' cognitive profiles were evaluated using the Italian version of the BAC-A, which assesses verbal memory, working memory, motor speed, verbal fluency, attention & processing speed, executive functions, and two new measures of affective processing. The BAC-A raw scores were corrected using the normative data for the Italian population. In addition, we explored whether intelligence quotient (IQ) and specific clinical variables would predict the BAC-A affective, non-affective, and total composite scores of patients with BD and HC. RESULTS HC performed better than patients with BD in all BAC-A subtests (all p < .001), except for subtests of the Affective Interference Test. (p ≥ .05). The effect sizes varied in magnitude and ranged between d = 0.02 and d = 1.27. In patients with BD, lower BAC-A composite scores were predicted by a higher number of hospitalizations. There was a significant association between IQ and BAC-A composite scores in both bipolar patients and HC. CONCLUSIONS The Italian BAC-A is sensitive to the cognitive impairments of patients with BD in both affective and non-affective cognitive domains.

Abstract
Rising rates of violence underscore the need to better understand how systems that regulate distress and impulse control jointly modulate aggression risk. The goals of the current study were to investigate the unique and interactive effects of emotional dysregulation and inhibitory control on the perpetration of physical aggression. We recruited a high-risk community sample of 206 adults (M/SDage = 33.55/10.89 years old; 47.1% female) who reported a range of physically aggressive behaviors. All participants completed a self-report measure (Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale), neuropsychological testing (Color Word Interference Test), and clinical interviewing (Lifetime History of Aggression Interview), and a subset of individuals (n = 134) underwent a neuroanatomical scan. As expected, the interplay of emotional and inhibitory control explained unique variance in physical aggression above and beyond their main effects. The positive association between emotion dysregulation and aggression strengthened as inhibitory control decreased. Cortical thickness in two right prefrontal clusters, one that peaked in the superior frontal gyrus and one that peaked in the caudal middle frontal gyrus, was also associated with the interactive effects of emotional dysregulation and inhibitory control. Notably, thickness in the superior frontal gyrus mediated the association between emotion dysregulation and physical aggression at low levels of inhibitory control. Using a multilevel and multimethod approach, the present study revealed neuroanatomical correlates of emotion-cognition interactions that have translational relevance to violence perpetration. These findings extend previous work primarily focused on functional-based neural assessments and point to the utility of examining neuroanatomical correlates of emotion-cognition interactions for understanding human aggression.

Background
Individuals with major depression have difficulties employing cognitive reappraisal. Most prior studies have not accounted for attentional deployment, which seems to be involved in this process.
Methods
We investigated the cognitive reappraisal tactic reinterpretation in 20 depressed and 28 healthy youths and assessed regulation success in response to negative pictures via self-report. To investigate attentional deployment during reinterpretation, we applied eye-tracking and manipulated gaze focus by instructing participants to direct their attention towards/away from emotional picture aspects.
Results
Depressed adolescents, compared with healthy youths, had a diminished regulation success when their gaze was focused on emotional aspects. Both depressed and healthy adolescents spent less time fixating on emotional facets of negative pictures when using reinterpretation as compared with simply attending to the pictures.
Conclusions
Results from this study suggest that adolescents with major depression have emotion regulation deficits when being confronted with negative emotional facets, while showing intact overt attentional processes. The findings provide important starting points for future research investigating the role of other factors which might impact on emotion regulation processes in this patient group, such as cognitive control deficits.

Abstract
Response inhibition, a crucial component of executive function, is closely related to personal impulse control, social adaption, and mental health. Previous studies have found response inhibition deficit in patients with major depressive disorder, but whether it also exists in individuals with subclinical depression (SD) remains unclear. This study aimed to identify the ability of response inhibition to emotional face stimuli both under explicit and implicit conditions in individuals with SD. Thirty-six subclinical depressed college students and 39 healthy individuals were recruited and administered the non-emotional, explicit, and implicit emotional stop-signal tasks (SSTs). Mixed-model analyses of variance were used to analyze the differences between and within groups. In implicit emotional SST, the results showed a significant longer stop-signal response time, a shorter stop-signal delay time, a shorter go reaction time, and a similar proportion of stop success in the SD group compared to healthy controls. However, the above indices showed no significant difference between the two groups in the non-emotional SST and explicit emotional SST. These findings suggest a possible defect of response inhibition in implicit emotional processing in individuals with SD, which may potentially serve as a marker of susceptibility to depression and thus be applied to early screening and intervention for major depressive disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many emotional experiences such as anxiety and depression are influenced by negative affect (NA). NA has both trait and state features, which play different roles in physiological and mental health. Attending to NA common to various emotional experiences and their trait-state features might help deepen the understanding of the shared foundation of related emotional disorders. METHODS The principal component of five measures was calculated to indicate individuals' NA level. Applying the connectivity-based correlation analysis, we first identified resting-state functional connectives (FCs) relating to NA in sample 1 (n = 367), which were validated through an independent sample (n = 232; sample 2). Next, based on the variability of FCs across large timescale, we further divided the NA-related FCs into high- and low-variability groups. Finally, FCs in different variability groups were separately applied to predict individuals' neuroticism level (which is assumed to be the core trait-related factor underlying NA), and the change of NA level (which represents the state-related fluctuation of NA). RESULTS The low-variability FCs were primarily within the default mode network (DMN) and between the DMN and dorsal attention network/sensory system and significantly predicted trait rather than state NA. The high-variability FCs were primarily between the DMN and ventral attention network, the fronto-parietal network and DMN/sensory system, and significantly predicted the change of NA level. CONCLUSIONS The trait and state NA can be separately predicted by stable and variable spontaneous FCs with different attentional processes and emotion regulatory mechanisms, which could deepen our understanding of NA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging has been widely used for the assessment of brain functional network, yet with inconsistent results. The present study aimed to investigate intranetwork and internetwork connectivity differences between patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls at the integrity, network and edge levels of 8 well-defined resting state networks. METHODS Thirty patients with MDD and sixty-three healthy control subjects were recruited in this study. RESULTS Compared with healthy controls, patients with MDD showed increased node degree in the right amygdala and putamen, increased connectivity strength in the deep gray matter network (DGN) and increased functional connectivity in intranetwork and internetwork. Meanwhile, MDD showed decreased connectivity strength in visual network-DGN pair. LIMITATIONS The sample size was small, and all patients in this study were of Asian ethnicity, especially Han individuals. CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrate that MDD cases and healthy controls may have divergent intranetwork and internetwork connectivity at an early stage without confounding influence of medication. These differences may underlie cognitive and behavioral alterations in patients with MDD. And these differences may help with the discrimination of patients and healthy people at an early stage of MDD. More studies in the future are warranted to assist in the diagnosis of this burdensome disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is widely considered as an effective and fast-acting option for treating patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the neural basis underlying this powerful therapy remains uncertain. Recent studies have suggested that the healthy brain may operate near a critical state, which may reflect a balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition. OBJECTIVE In the present study, we investigated whether there are any changes regarding criticality in MDD and, if so, whether ECT can reverse them. Critical dynamics analyses were performed on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data collected from 39 MDD patients and 38 healthy controls (HCs). RESULTS We found that compared with HCs, MDD patients, especially those who responded positively to ECT, tended to have smaller average avalanch sizes and lower branching ratios, suggesting a sub-critical state, at both the whole-brain and functional network levels. Importantly, ECT effectively corrected such anomalies, accompanied by enhanced degree centrality and functional connectivity of high-degree nodes located in the networks including the default-mode and the frontoparietal networks. CONCLUSION These results indicate that ECT can modulate large-scale brain dynamics of MDD patients to be closer to criticality. Our study sheds new light on the pathology of MDD and the network mechanism by which ECT influences treatment.

Abstract
Conventional monoamine-based pharmacotherapy, considered the first-line treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), has several challenges, including high rates of non-response. To address these challenges, preclinical and clinical studies have sought to characterize antidepressant response through monoamine-independent mechanisms. One striking example is glutamate, the brain's foremost excitatory neurotransmitter: since the 1990s, studies have consistently reported altered levels of glutamate in MDD, as well as antidepressant effects following molecular targeting of glutamatergic receptors. Therapeutically, this has led to advances in the discovery, testing, and clinical application of a wide array of glutamatergic agents, particularly ketamine. Notably, ketamine has been demonstrated to rapidly improve mood symptoms, unlike monoamine-based interventions, and the neurobiological basis behind this rapid antidepressant response is under active investigation. Advances in brain imaging techniques, including functional magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and positron emission tomography, enable the identification of the brain network-based characteristics distinguishing rapid glutamatergic modulation from the effect of slow-acting conventional monoamine-based pharmacology. Here, we review brain imaging studies that examine brain connectivity features associated with rapid antidepressant response in MDD patients treated with glutamatergic pharmacotherapies in contrast with patients treated with slow-acting monoamine-based treatments. Trends in recent brain imaging literature suggest that the activity of brain regions is organized into coherent functionally distinct networks, termed intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs). We provide an overview of major ICNs implicated in depression and explore how treatment response following glutamatergic modulation alters functional connectivity of limbic, cognitive, and executive nodes within ICNs, with well-characterized anti-anhedonic effects and the enhancement of "top-down" executive control. Alterations within and between the core ICNs could potentially exert downstream effects on the nodes within other brain networks of relevance to MDD that are structurally and functionally interconnected through glutamatergic synapses. Understanding similarities and differences in brain ICNs features underlying treatment response will positively impact the trajectory and outcomes for adults suffering from MDD and will facilitate the development of biomarkers to enable glutamate-based precision therapeutics.

Abstract
Health and financial uncertainties, as well as enforced social distancing, during the COVID-19 pandemic have adversely affected the mental health of people. These impacts are expected to continue even after the pandemic, particularly for those who lack support from family and friends. The salience network (SN), default mode network (DMN), and frontoparietal network (FPN) function in an interconnected manner to support information processing and emotional regulation processes in stressful contexts. In this study, we examined whether functional connectivity of the SN, DMN, and FPN, measured using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging before the pandemic, is a neurobiological marker of negative affect (NA) during the COVID-19 pandemic and after its peak in a large sample (N = 496, 360 females); the moderating role of social support in the brain-NA association was also investigated. We found that participants reported an increase in NA during the pandemic compared to before the pandemic, and the NA did not decrease, even after the peak period. People with higher connectivity within the SN and between the SN and the other two networks reported less NA during and after the COVID-19 outbreak peak, and the buffer effect was stronger if their social support was greater. These findings suggest that the functional networks that are responsible for affective processing and executive functioning, as well as the social support from family and friends, play an important role in protecting against NA under stressful and uncontrollable situations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with impaired executive function (EF), depressive/anxiety symptoms, and poor quality of life (QoL). In this study, we aimed to investigate correlations among these variables and to build a simple or serial mediation model for exploring the mechanisms between adult ADHD and QoL. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study. The sample included 223 participants with ADHD and 54 healthy volunteers. Participants were required to complete the following scales: ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD-RS), Brief Version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF), Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Version (BRIEF-A), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Correlations among EF, depressive/anxiety symptoms and QoL were analyzed using Pearson correlation. The simple and serial mediation models were analyzed using PROCESS (version 3.3). RESULTS The correlations between EF and QoL, depressive/anxiety symptoms and QoL, and depressive/anxiety symptoms and EF were statistically significant. In ADHD adults with comorbidities, the correlation coefficients were between -0.19 and -0.47, -0.20 and -0.62, 0.28 and 0.50, respectively. In simple mediation models, EF and depressive/anxiety symptoms were significant mediators respectively between ADHD and QoL, respectively. In a serial two-mediator model, ADHD could affect QoL indirectly via EF and then via depressive/anxiety symptoms significantly. LIMITATIONS The average age was young, the degree of education was high, and only self-reported scales were relied on. CONCLUSIONS There is a mutual effect between EF and emotional symptoms. This was the first study to build a serial two-mediator model between ADHD and QoL, suggesting the importance of EF and depressive/anxiety symptoms.

Abstract
Spontaneous fluctuations in the blood oxygenation level dependent signal measured through resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging have been corroborated to aggregate into multiple functional networks. Abnormal resting brain activity is observed in mood disorder patients, however with inconsistent results. How do such alterations relate to clinical symptoms; e.g., level of depression and rumination tendencies? Here we recovered spatially and temporally overlapping functional networks from 31 mood disorder patients and healthy controls during rest, by applying novel methods that identify transient changes in spontaneous brain activity. Our unique approach disentangles the dynamic engagement of resting-state networks unconstrained by the slow hemodynamic response. This time-varying characterization provides moment-to-moment information about functional networks in terms of their durations and dynamic coupling, and offers novel evidence for selective contributionsto particular clinical symptoms. Patients showed increased duration of default-mode network (DMN), increased duration and occurrence of posterior DMN as well as insula- and amygdala-centered networks, but decreased occurrence of visual and anterior salience networks. Coupling between limbic (insula and amygdala) networks was also reduced. Depression level modulated DMN duration, whereas intrusive thoughts correlated with occurrence of insula and posterior DMN. Anatomical network organization was similar to controls. In sum, altered brain dynamics in mood disorder patients appear to mediate distinct clinical dimensions including increased self-processing, and decreased attention to external world.

Abstract
Sertraline is one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by spontaneous thoughts that are laden with negative affect-a "malignant sadness". Prior neuroimaging studies have identified abnormal resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in the spontaneous brain networks of MDD patients. But how antidepressant medication acts to relieve the experience of depression as well as adjust its associated spontaneous networks and mood-regulation circuits remains an open question. In this study, we recruited 22 drug-naïve MDD patients along with 35 normal controls and investigated whether the functional integrity of cortical networks associated with spontaneous thoughts is modulated by sertraline treatment. We attempted to predict post-treatment effects based upon what we observed in the pre-treatment rsFC of drug-naïve MDD patients. In the result, we demonstrated that (1) after the sertraline treatment, the medial temporal lobe of default network (DNMTL) and mood regulation pathway-the fronto-parietal control network (FPCN), the thalamus, and the salience network (SN)-were restored to normal connectivity, relative to the pre-treatment condition; however, the altered connections of FPCN-core DN (DNCORE), FPCN-SN, and intra-FPCN among MDD patients remained impaired; (2) thalamo-prefrontal connectivity provides moderate predictive power (r2 = 0.63) for the effectiveness of sertraline treatment. In summary, our findings contribute to a body of evidence that suggests salubrious effects of sertraline treatment primarily involve the FPCN-thalamus-SN pathway. The pre-treatment rsFC in this pathway could serve as a predictor of sertraline treatment outcome.

Abstract
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and anxiety disorders (ANX) are each highly prevalent and frequently co-occur, resulting in a complex clinical presentation. The existing literature to date has not yet identified how to best treat comorbid AUD/ANX, partially due to limitations in understanding what factors and mechanisms are implicated in their co-occurrence. This manuscript describes the rationale and methods for an ongoing randomized-controlled trial designed to evaluate the efficacy of a cognitive behavioral intervention, the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP), compared to Take Control (TC), a psychosocial and motivational treatment serving as a control condition in this study, for comorbid AUD/ANX. Sixty individuals with comorbid AUD/ANX will be randomized to UP or TC, and complete assessments at pre- and post-treatment, as well as one- and six-month follow-up points. We hypothesize that the UP, compared to TC, will result in significantly greater reductions in drinking-related outcomes, as well as anxiety and depressive-related outcomes. Additionally, the current study is designed to evaluate exploratory aims to contribute to our theoretical understanding of why AUD and ANX frequently co-occur. Specifically, we will examine the relationship between changes in AUD and ANX symptoms in relation to changes in emotional disorder mechanisms, such as emotion regulation. Because the UP is a transdiagnostic treatment that specifically targets underlying components of emotional disorders generally, it may be well suited to effectively target comorbid AUD/ANX.

Abstract
Adaptive goal-directed behavior requires a dynamic balance between maintenance and updating within working memory (WM). This balance is controlled by an input-gating mechanism implemented by dopamine in the basal ganglia. Given that dopaminergic manipulations can modulate performance on WM-related tasks, it is important to gain mechanistic insight into whether such manipulations differentially affect updating (i.e., encoding and removal) and the closely-related gate opening/closing processes that respectively enable/prevent updating. To clarify this issue, 2.0 g of dopamine’s precursor L-tyrosine was administered to healthy young adults (N = 45) in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subjects study. WM processes were empirically distinguished using the reference-back paradigm, which isolates performance related to updating, gate opening, and gate closing. L-tyrosine had a selective, baseline-dependent effect only on gate opening, which was evidenced by markedly reduced variance across subjects in gate opening performance in the L-tyrosine compared with the placebo condition, whereas the whole-sample average performance did not differ between conditions. This indicates a pattern of results whereby low-performing subjects improved, whereas high-performing subjects were impaired on L-tyrosine. Importantly, this inverted U-shaped pattern was not explained by regression to the mean. These results are consistent with an inverted-U relationship between dopamine and WM, and they indicate that updating and gating are differentially affected by a dopaminergic manipulation. This highlights the importance of distinguishing these processes when studying WM, for example, in the context of WM deficits in disorders with a dopaminergic pathophysiology.

Abstract
Aberrant effective connectivity between default mode (DMN) and salience (SAL) networks may support the tendency of depressed individuals to find it difficult to disengage from self-focused, negatively-biased thinking and may contribute to the onset and maintenance of depression. Assessment of effective connectivity, which can statistically characterize the direction of influence between regions within neural circuits, may provide new insights into the nature of DMN-SAL connectivity disruptions in depression. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was collected from 38 individuals with a history of major depression and 50 healthy comparison participants during completion of an emotion-word Stroop task. Activation within DMN and SAL networks and effective connectivity between DMN and SAL, assessed via Granger causality, were examined. Individuals with a history of depression exhibited greater overall network activation, greater directed connectivity from DMN to SAL, and less directed connectivity from SAL to DMN than healthy comparison participants during negative-word trials. Among individuals with a history of depression, greater DMN-to-SAL connectivity was associated with lower overall network activation and worse task performance during positive-word trials; this pattern was not observed among healthy participants. Present findings indicate that greater network activation and, specifically, influence of DMN on SAL, support negativity bias among previously depressed individuals.

Purpose of Review
Anhedonia is a transdiagnostic symptom comprising reduced subjective reward or pleasure. Anhedonia influences subjective anticipation and in-the-moment experiences. This review draws together affective learning and engagement evidence for anhedonia affecting subjective experiences of social environments.
Recent Findings
While social engagement is diminished consistently, subjective appraisals of social contexts vary across different mental health disorders. Low positive affect during social experiences or stimuli is reported in PTSD, mood, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders. Diminished neural reward networks underpin the anticipation of social experiences in ADHD, schizophrenia spectrum, and autistic spectrum disorders. Multiple theories exist to explain how anhedonia might interfere with social environments.
Summary
Anhedonia is a barrier to engagement, motivation, and enjoyment of social contexts. While many studies characterize experiences during social contexts, learning theories provide the most promise for developing targeted interventions.

Abstract
Variability in functional brain network connectivity has been linked to individual differences in cognitive, affective, and behavioral traits in adults. However, little is known about the developmental origins of such brain-behavior correlations. The current study examined functional brain network connectivity and its link to behavioral temperament in typically developing newborn and 1-month-old infants (M [age] = 25 days; N = 75) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Specifically, we measured long-range connectivity between cortical regions approximating fronto-parietal, default mode, and homologous-interhemispheric networks. Our results show that connectivity in these functional brain networks varies across infants and maps onto individual differences in behavioral temperament. Specifically, connectivity in the fronto-parietal network was positively associated with regulation and orienting behaviors, whereas connectivity in the default mode network showed the opposite effect on these behaviors. Our analysis also revealed a significant positive association between the homologous-interhemispheric network and infants' negative affect. The current results suggest that variability in long-range intra-hemispheric and cross-hemispheric functional connectivity between frontal, parietal, and temporal cortex is associated with individual differences in affect and behavior. These findings shed new light on the brain origins of individual differences in early-emerging behavioral traits and thus represent a viable novel approach for investigating developmental trajectories in typical and atypical neurodevelopment.

Abstract
Facilitated processing of negative information might contribute to the etiopathogenesis and maintenance of depressive symptoms. Cardiac vagal tone, indexed by heart rate variability (HRV), is believed to represent a proxy of the functional integrity of the neural networks implicated in brooding rumination, affective interference and depression. The present study examined whether HRV may moderate the relation between brooding rumination, affective interference and depressive symptoms in a sample of healthy individuals (n = 68) with different degrees of depressed mood. Self-report measures of depression and brooding were collected, whereas the emotional Stroop task was employed to measure affective interference. Three-minute resting-state electrocardiogram was recorded to obtain time- and frequency-domain vagally mediated HRV parameters. Stepwise linear regression analyses revealed that HRV was a significant moderator of the positive association between depression and brooding rumination, but not of the association between depression and affective interference. An integrated model is supported, in which vagally mediated HRV appeared to potentiate the positive link between depressive symptoms and brooding rumination. Considering that HRV and brooding rumination were found to have an interacting role in determining the severity of depressive symptoms, they may represent potential clinical targets in the prevention and treatment of depressive symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Understanding the fluctuating emotional and cognitive states of adolescents with depressive symptoms requires fine-grained and naturalistic measurements. This study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to investigate the affective correlates and consequences of mind-wandering in adolescents with anhedonia (AH) and typically developing (TD) controls. In addition, we examined the association between mind-wandering and resting state functional connectivity between the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a core hub of the default mode network (DMN) linked to internally oriented mentation, and networks linked to attentional control (dorsal attention network [DAN]) and affect/salience detection (salience network [SN]). METHOD A total of 65 adolescents, aged 12 to 18 years (TD = 36; AH = 29), completed a resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan and subsequently used a smartphone application for ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data collection (2-3 times/d for 5 days). Each survey (N = 678) prompted adolescents to report on their current positive and negative affect (PA and NA), cognition, and activity. RESULTS The frequency of mind-wandering was higher for AH (70.0% of EMA samples) relative to TD (59.2%) participants, and the participants with AH were more likely to mind-wander to unpleasant content. Mind-wandering was associated with higher concurrent NA, even when controlling for plausible confounds (eg, current activity, social companion, rumination). Time-lagged analyses revealed a bidirectional association between mind-wandering and PA. Greater levels of mind-wandering within the AH group were associated with stronger mPFC-SN/DAN connectivity. CONCLUSION Rates of mind-wandering were high, especially among adolescents with anhedonia, and predicted worse affect. The relation between mind-wandering and enhanced mPFC-SN coupling may reflect heightened bottom-up influence of affective and sensory salience on DMN-mediated internally oriented thought.

Abstract
Background: Suicide is moderately heritable and also more common in those who report childhood abuse. Previously, it was found that allele A of GABRG2 (GABA A receptor subunit gamma2) polymorphism rs211034 was protective in a suicide attempt (SA). Hence, it was proposed that rs211034 may interact with childhood trauma to influence cognitive deficits related to SA or depression risk. Genetic variants may predict the benefits of certain cognitive treatments. Methods: A total of 52 individuals who had attempted suicide, 59 individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar depression who had not previously attempted suicide, and 90 healthy volunteers were subjected to the modified Suicide Stroop task and were clinically assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and Hamilton Depression Scale-24 items (HAMD-24). rs211034 was genotyped using Sanger sequencing. Results: After correcting for covariates, depressed participants displayed longer reaction times for all emotional conditions, including suicide-related words, compared with healthy controls. Depressed suicide attempters displayed longer reaction times for negative words than depressed non-attempters. Depressed non-attempters displayed higher interference scores for negative words compared with healthy controls. There was an interaction between rs211034 risk allele and the effects of reported childhood sexual abuse (CSA) on reaction time for all emotional words and suicide-related words. Carriers of the rs211034 risk allele A exhibited shorter reaction times, but the protective effects of this allele were eliminated in those exposed to reported CSA. Conclusion: Only limited results were found regarding effects of a past suicide attempt on response times to emotional and suicide-related words, but there was an overall effect of major depression on slower response time. Protective genetic effects of the rs211034 A allele on this slowing were eliminated in those with a history of sexual abuse during childhood. Further research is needed to better characterize the mechanisms underlying the effects of childhood trauma on these genetic effects.

Abstract
AIM There is rapidly increasing evidence that remission of MDD is associated with substantial changes in functional brain connectivity. These New data have provided a holistic view on the mechanism of antidepressants on multiple levels that goes beyond their conventional effects on neurotransmitters. METHOD The study was approved by the Local Ethics Committee of Istanbul Medipol University (10840098-604.01.01-E.65129) and followed the Helsinki Declaration principles. In our study, we have evaluated the effect of six weeks of treatment with antidepressants (escitalopram and duloxetine), and tested the underlying brain functional connectivity through a Graph analysis approach in a well-defined first-episode, drug-naive, and non-comorbid population with MDD. RESULTS Beyond indicating that there was a significant correlation between the antidepressant response and topological characteristics of the brain, our results suggested that global rather than regional network alterations may be implicated in the antidepressant effect. CONCLUSION Despite the small-sample size and non-controlled study design, our study provides important and relevant clinical data regarding the underlying mechanisms of the antidepressants on topological dynamics in the human brain.

Abstract
Affect reactivity to stress may play a role in the development of internalizing symptoms during the college transition, a critical developmental juncture for Latinx adolescents, the largest ethnic minority group on college campuses. This study examined whether affect reactivity during high school is associated with internalizing symptoms in college and explored two potential protective factors, perceived family and peer support. Participants were 209 Latinx adolescents (Mage = 18.10; 64.4% female) who completed standard surveys and four diary assessments per day over 7 days (N > 4,500 momentary observations). First, to measure affect reactivity, we assessed whether perceived stress was associated with negative affect at the momentary level during high school (senior year). Second, we tested whether affect reactivity predicted internalizing symptoms during the first year of college. Third, we tested whether perceived family or peer support buffered the negative consequences of affect reactivity. Results indicated statistically significant within- and between-person associations between stress and negative affect. Moreover, affect reactivity significantly predicted depressive, but not anxiety, symptoms. Buffering was found for family, but not peer, support. Findings extend previous research by detecting associations between momentary affect reactivity and internalizing symptoms during a sociocultural shift in Latinx adolescents' lives and have implications for culturally appropriate programs to prevent depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Depressive symptoms following a stressful life event, such as a relationship breakup, are common, and constitute a potent risk factor for the onset of a major depressive episode. Resting-state neuroimaging studies have increasingly identified abnormal whole-brain communication in patients with depression, but it is currently unclear whether depressive symptoms in individuals without a clinical diagnosis have reliable neural underpinnings. We investigated to what extent the severity of depressive symptoms in a non-clinical sample was associated with imbalances in the complex dynamics of the brain during rest. To this end, a novel intrinsic ignition approach was applied to resting-state neuroimaging data from sixty-nine participants with varying degrees of depressive symptoms following a relationship breakup. Ignition-based measures of integration, hierarchy, and metastability were calculated for each participant, revealing a negative correlation between these measures and depressive ratings. We found that the severity of depressive symptoms was associated with deficits in the brain's capacity to globally integrate and process information over time. Furthermore, we found that increased depressive symptoms were associated with reduced spatial diversity (i.e., hierarchy) and reduced temporal variability (i.e., metastability) in the functional organization of the brain. These findings suggest the merit of investigating constrained dynamical complexity as it is sensitive to the level of depressive symptoms even in a non-clinical sample.

Abstract
Alterations in neural systems underlying cognitive control are well-documented across individuals with various internalizing disorders. The current study examined how individual differences in underlying traits related to internalizing disorders influence brain activation, as assessed by fMRI, when cognitive control must be exerted to make a decision about the emotional valence (positive, negative) of a task-relevant word displayed concurrently with a task-irrelevant emotional face. Taking a bi-factor model approach, fifty-five middle-aged female participants were characterized on symptom level on a common internalizing latent factor representing shared symptoms across anxiety and depression, as well as on specific factors remaining after taking the common internalizing factor into account: low positive affect, anxious arousal, and anxious apprehension. Contrasting activation on trials requiring higher vs. lower control revealed that higher levels of the Common Internalizing factor are associated with less deactivation of regions of the default mode network. Higher levels of the Low Positive Affect-specific factor are associated with less differentiation in engagement of portions of the fronto-parietal control network, while higher levels of the Anxious Arousal-specific factor are associated with less of a differentiation in activation of the thalamus. No effects were observed for level of the Anxious Apprehension-specific factor. These results suggest that prior findings of alterations in default mode activity associated with depression may not be specific to depressive symptoms per se but may characterize internalizing symptoms more generally. In addition, they suggest that reduced engagement of cognitive control regions may be more associated with low positive affect than depressive symptoms more generally.

Abstract
Early life stress (ELS) can be very harmful to an individual's wellbeing and brain development. It is well established that childhood maltreatment is a significant risk factor for depression. ELS is positively correlated with depressive symptoms both in major depression disorder patients and healthy individuals, but the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying this association are still unclear. In the present study, we calculate the within/between-network connectivity in 528 college students, and Pearson correlation was performed to investigate the relationship between network measures and ELS. Additionally, the same method was applied to verify these results in another sample. Finally, mediation analysis was performed to explore the cognitive and neural mechanisms regarding the association between ELS and depression. Correlation analysis indicated that ELS was positively correlated with the within-network connectivity of the ventral attention network (VAN), the dorsal attention network (DAN), the salience network (SN), the somatosensory network (SMN) and the between-network connectivity of ventral attention network-dorsal attention network (VAN-DAN), ventral attention network- somatosensory network (VAN-SMN), and ventral attention network-visual network (VAN-VN). Validation results indicated that ELS is associated with the within-network connectivity of VAN and DAN. Mediation analysis revealed that attention bias and the within-network connectivity of VAN could mediated the relationship between ELS and depression. Both behavioral and neural evidence emphasize ELS's influence on individual's emotion attention. Furthermore, the present study also provides two possible mediation models to explain the potential mechanisms behind the relationship between ELS and depression.
