Effects of Cover Crops on Population Reduction of Soybean Cyst Nematode (Heterodera glycines)

Influence of cover crops at the four spheres: A review of ecosystem services, potential barriers, and future directions for North America

Cover crops have been studied for over a century, but the recognition of a complex interaction of cover crop on the Earth's biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere is relatively recent. Furthermore, previously published cover crop research has largely focused on evaluating cover crop impacts on subsequent crop yield. Understanding the cover crop-induced benefits on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions, wind and water erosion, weed control, and soil microbial communities has gained considerable attention in the last few decades, which is crucial to make progress towards developing sustainable agricultural production systems. New research is continuously published to gain a comprehensive understanding of the multiple ecosystem services provided by cover crops. Here, in this review, we aimed to (a) summarize current knowledge related to cover crop impacts on agroecosystem functioning and explore the potential mechanisms responsible for those effects, and (b) identify the key factors limiting the adoption of cover crops into agroecosystems and the conspicuous knowledge gaps in cover crop research. Overall, the review results suggest that cover crops increased subsequent crop yield, increased SOC storage, increased weed suppression, mitigated N₂O emissions, reduced wind and water erosion, suppressed plant pathogens, and increased soil microbial activity and wildlife biodiversity. However, the magnitude of benefits observed with cover crops varied with cover crop type, location, and the duration of cover cropping. Notably, cover crop termination methods, designing crop rotations to fit cover crops, additional costs associated with cover crop integration, and uncertainty related to economic returns with cover crops are some of the major barriers limiting the adoption of cover crops into production systems, particularly in North America. In addition to long-term effects, future research on cover crop agronomy, breeding cover crop cultivars, and interactive effects of cover crops with other sustainable land management practices is needed.

Reniform Nematode Management Using Winter Crop Rotation and Residue Incorporation Methods in Greenhouse Experiments

Rotylenchulus reniformis (reniform nematode, RN) is an important pathogen in cotton production. Cultural practices such as crop rotation and biofumigation-management of soil pathogens by biocidal compounds from crop residues-may help manage RN. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of winter crops for RN management through combinations of rotation and crop residue incorporation in a cotton greenhouse experiment. A total of 10 treatments were evaluated in soil inoculated with RN: three winter crops (carinata, oat, or hairy vetch) grown in rotation with no shoot organic matter (OM) incorporated (1-3), fresh shoot OM incorporated (4-6), or dry shoot OM incorporated (7-9), and a fallow control (10). Roots were re-incorporated in all treatments except fallow. Subsequently, cotton was grown. Oat and fallow were better rotation crops to lower soil RN abundances at winter crop termination than hairy vetch and carinata. After the OM incorporation treatments and cotton growth, oat was generally more effective at managing RN in cotton than carinata or hairy vetch. Within each crop, incorporation treatment generally did not affect RN management. Cotton growth was not consistently affected by the treatments.

Evaluation of cover crops for reducing Heterodera glycines populations in microplot experiments

Soybean cyst nematode (SCN; Heterodera glycines) is a major yield-reducing pathogen of soybean worldwide. Microplot experiments were conducted to evaluate ten cover crops for their effects on two SCN populations (SCN103 and SCN2W) collected from North Dakota, USA, soybean fields in 2019 and 2020. Experiments were conducted in a randomised complete block design using naturally infested field soil. A susceptible soybean ‘Barnes’ and non-planted natural soil (fallow) were used as controls. Plants were grown in outdoor conditions for 75 days before soil samples were collected. SCN eggs and juveniles were extracted from the soil samples to determine final population, population reduction and suppression. Soybean had significantly greater final population densities than all the cover crops and fallow. All cover crops and fallow reduced the initial densities of both SCN populations. All the cover crops, except chickling vetch ‘Pulse’, had lower final population densities than fallow and suppressed the SCN populations throughout the experiments. Sunnhemp (cultivar not stated; CNS), oilseed radish ‘Concorde’ and ‘Control’, and daikon radish ‘Eco-Till’ significantly reduced the SCN103 population compared to fallow. Sunnhemp, alfalfa ‘Bullseye’, and daikon radish had significant population reductions of SCN2W than fallow. Sunnhemp was found to have the greatest reductions in SCN populations ranging from 55 to 86% compared to the initial densities. This study demonstrated cover crop species/cultivars with the ability to reduce SCN populations in outdoor conditions, and the findings indicate that they could be utilised in infested fields to manage SCN.

Exploring Soybean Resistance to Soybean Cyst Nematode

Resistance to the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is a topic incorporating multiple mechanisms and multiple types of science. It is also a topic of substantial agricultural importance, as SCN is estimated to cause more yield damage than any other pathogen of soybean, one of the world's main food crops. Both soybean and SCN have experienced jumps in experimental tractability in the past decade, and significant advances have been made. The rhg1-b locus, deployed on millions of farm acres, has been durable and will remain important, but local SCN populations are gradually evolving to overcome rhg1-b. Multiple other SCN resistance quantitative trait loci (QTL) of proven value are now in play with soybean breeders. QTL causal gene discovery and mechanistic insights into SCN resistance are contributing to both basic and applied disciplines. Additional understanding of SCN and other cyst nematodes will also grow in importance and lead to novel disease control strategies.

Assessing Direct and Residual Effects of Cover Crops on the Soybean Cyst Nematode, Heterodera glycines

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine if cover crops directly decrease population densities of the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines, and/or have residual effects on reproduction of the nematode on soybean (Glycine max). Population densities of SCN were not significantly decreased by nine cover crop plants or three cover crop mixes compared with a non-planted soil control in a repeated 60-day-long greenhouse experiment. When susceptible soybeans were grown in the soils after cover crop growth, fewer SCN females formed after three annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) cultivars (Bounty, King, and RootMax), the Daikon radish (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus) cultivar CCS779, Kodiak mustard (Brassica juncea), and a mix containing cereal rye, crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum), plus Daikon radish (cultivars not stated) compared with following the non-planted control. In another repeated experiment, cover crops were grown for 56 days in SCN-infested soil in the greenhouse then exposed to Iowa winter conditions for 28 days to simulate winter termination of the plants. One treatment, a cover crop mix containing 'Bounty' annual ryegrass plus 'Enricher' Daikon radish, had a decrease in SCN population density greater than the non-planted control at the end of the experiment. Significantly fewer SCN females formed on soybeans grown after several cover crops, including the three annual ryegrass cultivars that had the suppressive residual effects in the first experiment. In summary, there were no cover crop treatments that consistently decreased SCN population densities across experiments, and only one cover crop treatment in one experiment significantly reduced SCN population densities more than a non-planted soil control. However, there was a somewhat consistent, adverse, residual effect of cover crops on reproduction of SCN on susceptible soybeans after growth of multiple cover crops.
