Chemopriming for induction of disease resistance against pathogens in rice

Rice is an important grain crop of Asian population. Different fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens cause large reduction in rice grain production. Use of chemical pesticides, to provide protection against pathogens, has become incomplete due to pathogens resistance and is cause of environmental concerns. Therefore, induction of resistance in rice against pathogens via biopriming and chemopriming with safe and novel agents has emerged on a global level as ecofriendly alternatives that provide protection against broad spectrum of rice pathogens without any significant yield penalty. In the past three decades, a number of chemicals such as silicon, salicylic acid, vitamins, plant extract, phytohormones, nutrients etc. have been used to induce defense against bacterial, fungal and viral rice pathogens. From the detailed analysis of abiotic agents used, it has been observed that silicon and salicylic acid are two potential chemicals for inducing resistance against fungal and bacterial diseases in rice, respectively. However, an inclusive evaluation of the potential of different abiotic agents to induce resistance against rice pathogens is lacking due to which the studies on induction of defense against rice pathogens via chemopriming has become disproportionate and discontinuous. The present review deals with a comprehensive analysis of different abiotic agents used to induce defense against rice pathogens, their mode of application, mechanism of defense induction and the effect of defense induction on grain yield. It also provides an account of unexplored areas, which might be taken into attention to efficiently manage rice diseases. Effect of Chemical Seed Treatment on Rice False Smut Control in Field

Rice false smut, caused by the pathogen Ustilaginoidea virens, is a severe emerging disease in China. It affects not only the quality of rice but also yields of rice production. To make clear the effect of chemical seed treatment on the rice false smut control in fields, during 2014 to 2017, four fungicides with different modes of action were used to treat rice seeds contaminated by false smut balls. In rice-growing seasons, samples of rice tissues were taken for detection of U. virens by using a specific nested PCR method at different rice-growing stages. In addition, the occurrence of rice false smut was investigated at maturation stage. Results showed that U. virens in plant tissues decreased significantly at the seedling stage upon chemical seed treatment. Four chemical treatments decreased the detection rate significantly (P < 0.01) compared with the water treatment, but no significant difference was observed among four chemical treatments. However, the detection rate did not decease significantly at the tillering and booting stages. Similarly, the final occurrence of rice false smut did not show significant difference between each chemical and water treatment. These results suggested that chemical seed treatment had only limited efficacy in preventing occurrence of rice false smut; application of fungicides at the booting stage or integrated use of fungicides and agricultural practices might give a better control for this disease.

Growth Restriction of Rhizoctonia solani via Breakage of Intracellular Organelles Using Crude Extracts of Gallnut and Clove

Plant diseases reduce crop yield and quality, hampering the development of agriculture. Fungicides, which restrict chemical synthesis in fungi, are the strongest controls for plant diseases. However, the harmful effects on the environment due to continued and uncontrolled utilization of fungicides have become a major challenge in recent years. Plant-sourced fungicides are a class of plant antibacterial substances or compounds that induce plant defenses. They can kill or inhibit the growth of target pathogens efficiently with no or low toxicity, they degrade readily, and do not prompt development of resistance, which has led to their widespread use. In this study, the growth inhibition effect of 24 plant-sourced ethanol extracts on rice sprigs was studied. Ethanol extract of gallnuts and cloves inhibited the growth of bacteria by up to 100%. Indoor toxicity measurement results showed that the gallnut and glove constituents inhibition reached 39.23 μg/mL and 18.82 μg/mL, respectively. Extract treated rice sprigs were dry and wrinkled. Gallnut caused intracellular swelling and breakage of mitochondria, disintegration of nuclei, aggregation of protoplasts, and complete degradation of organelles in hyphae and aggregation of cellular contents. Protection of Rhizoctonia solani viability reached 46.8% for gallnut and 37.88% for clove in water emulsions of 1000 μg/mL gallnut and clove in the presence of 0.1% Tween 80. The protection by gallnut was significantly stronger than that of clove. The data could inform the choice of plant-sourced fungicides for the comprehensive treatment of rice sprig disease. The studied extract effectively protected rice sprigs and could be a suitable alternative to commercially available chemical fungicides. Further optimized field trials are needed to effectively sterilize rice paddies.
