Abstract
The aims were to determine if the contact with estrous females stimulates testosterone and cortisol secretion in Iberian ibex bucks during or out of the breeding season and if their social rank affects this response. Nine Iberian ibex bucks (Capra pyrenaica), were challenged with estrous does during two periods: winter-spring and autumn (three tests at each season, separated 10 days). Individual success index (SI) was calculated in both season. Bucks were exposed to an estrous doe, their sexual and agonistic behavior was recorded, testosterone and cortisol concentrations were measured. There were no sexual interactions toward the estrous doe in any test. Testosterone concentration was unrelated to the SI in any season and was not modified with the tests. Cortisol concentration was greater in the first than in the second and third tests in both seasons (winter-spring: 99.7 ± 15.7 ng/mL, 65.9 ± 9.4 ng/mL and 62.3 ± 10.1 ng/mL P < 0.0001; autumn: 110.1 ± 15.8 ng/mL, 79.2 ± 13.4 ng/mL, and 87.6 ± 13.5 ng/mL; P < 0.01). Iberian ibex bucks allocated in captivity did not display sexual behaviors nor modify the testosterone secretion, which was not modified by social hierarchy, after estrous doe exposition, during or out of the pre-rutting period.

Abstract
Sheep show characteristics of phenotypic diversity and adaptation to diverse climatic regions. Previous studies indicated associations between copy number variations (CNVs) and climate-driven adaptive evolution in humans and other domestic animals. Here, we constructed a genomic landscape of CNVs (n = 39,145) in 47 old autochthonous populations genotyped at a set of high-density (600 K) SNPs to detect environment-driven signatures of CNVs using a multivariate regression model. We found 136 deletions and 52 duplications that were significantly (Padj. < 0.05) associated with climatic variables. These climate-mediated selective CNVs are involved in functional candidate genes for heat stress and cold climate adaptation (e.g., B3GNTL1, UBE2L3, and TRAF2), coat and wool-related traits (e.g., TMEM9, STRA6, RASGRP2, and PLA2G3), repairing damaged DNA (e.g., HTT), GTPase activity (e.g., COPG), fast metabolism (e.g., LMF2 and LPIN3), fertility and reproduction (e.g., SLC19A1 and CCDC155), growth-related traits (e.g., ADRM1 and IGFALS), and immune response (e.g., BEGAIN and RNF121) in sheep. In particular, we identified significant (Padj. < 0.05) associations between probes in deleted/duplicated CNVs and solar radiation. Enrichment analysis of the gene sets among all the CNVs revealed significant (Padj. < 0.05) enriched gene ontology terms and pathways related to functions such as nucleotide, protein complex, and GTPase activity. Additionally, we observed overlapping between the CNVs and 140 known sheep QTLs. Our findings imply that CNVs can serve as genomic markers for the selection of sheep adapted to specific climatic conditions.

Abstract
The study aimed at determining the effects of breed type, breeding season, sex and type of birth on the growth and reproductive traits of lambs. Two ewe breed types (Gellaper and Swakara) and four ram breed types (Damara, Dorper, GeDo and Swakara) were used. Two lambing seasons, spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), were considered. Gellaper-based lambs born in autumn had higher (P < 0.05) mean birth weight (4.58 kg) compared to spring-born lambs (3.43 kg). Ram lambs were heavier (P < 0.05) than ewe lambs at weaning and post-weaning age. Singletons were heavier than twins (P < 0.05) at birth, weaning and breeding. Single and autumn-born lambs had a higher average daily gain (ADG) than spring-born lambs (P < 0.05). Ram lambs had a higher pre-weaning and overall ADG (P < 0.05) compared with ewe lambs. Swakara-based lambs gained more from weaning to mating compared to Gellaper-based lambs (P < 0.05). The conception, lambing and annual reproductive rate were all influenced by breed type and season (P < 0.05). Swakara-based lambs had higher reproductive capabilities, while Gellaper-based lambs grew faster but take longer to breed type; autumn lambing gave rise to low birth weights but heavier lambs at weaning and post-weaning, hence suitable for mutton production.

Abstract
In most animals, annual rhythms in environmental cues and internal programs regulate seasonal physiology and behavior. Prolactin, an evolutionarily ancient hormone, serves as a molecular correlate of seasonal timing in most species. Prolactin is highly pleiotropic with a wide variety of well-documented physiological effects; in a seasonal context prolactin is known to regulate annual changes in pelage and molt. While short-term homeostatic variation of prolactin secretion is under the control of the hypothalamus, long-term seasonal rhythms of prolactin are programmed by endogenous timers that reside in the pituitary gland. The molecular basis of these rhythms is generally understood to be melatonin dependent in mammals. Prolactin rhythmicity persists for several years in many species, in the absence of hypothalamic signaling. Such evidence in mammals has supported the hypothesis that seasonal rhythms in prolactin derive from an endogenous timer within the pituitary gland that is entrained by external photoperiod. In this review, we describe the conserved nature of prolactin signaling in birds and mammals and highlight its role in regulating multiple diverse physiological systems. The review will cover the current understanding of the molecular control of prolactin seasonality and propose a mechanism by which long-term rhythms may be generated in amniotes.

Abstract
Thirty Merino rams were used to determine the effect of four management systems of rams on semen quality during the anoestrous season. Animals were divided into four groups: Artificial-Photoperiod group (AP; n = 8), which were isolated from females and exposed to artificial long days (16 hr/d) from 1 Feb to 15 Mar; Natural-Photoperiod (NP; n = 8), isolated from females and exposed to the natural photoperiod throughout the experiment; Oestrous-Ewe group (EE; n = 7), housed in a pen adjacent to another pen that housed three ewes in oestrus, and Anestric-Ewe group (AE; n = 7), housed adjacent to another pen that housed three ovariectomized ewes. From 20 Mar to the end of May (10 weeks), semen samples were collected weekly, and blood samples were collected to determine plasma testosterone concentrations. Mean plasma testosterone concentrations, ejaculate volume and reaction time were not affected either by treatment or week. There was a significant effect (p < .01) of ram treatment on sperm concentration, and both TM y PM, and their interaction, were significantly affected by group and week (p < .001). Rams exposed to ewes in oestrus presented the largest sperm concentration (p < .05) compared with the other three groups, although they had the lowest total and progressive motilities (p < .01). In conclusion, management strategy in spring affects semen quality of rams, with the presence of ewes in oestrus being the best plan to increase sperm concentration.

Abstract
A total of 72 dairy ewes of 2 breeds (MN, Manchega, 72.4 ± 1.9 kg of body weight, n = 36; LC, Lacaune, 77.7 ± 2.3 kg of body weight; n = 36) were used to evaluate the lactational effects of melatonin implants in early lactation and under the short-day photoperiod conditions of autumn (experiment was centered on the winter solstice). Ewes lambed in autumn and were penned indoors in 12 balanced groups of 6 ewes by breed, body weight, age, and number of lambs, and randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial design (treatment × breed × replicate). Ewes suckled their lambs for 28 d. Treatments were (1) melatonin (MEL), which received 1 subcutaneous implant of melatonin (18 mg/ewe) in the ear base at 35 ± 1 d (1 wk after lamb weaning), and (2) control, which did not receive any treatment. Ewes were fed ad libitum a total mixed ration (forage:concentrate, 60:40) and machine milked twice daily. Daily milk yield was automatically recorded from d 29 to 105 of lactation and sampled every 2 wk for composition. Jugular blood was sampled for plasma hormone analyses at 30, 50, 80, 110, and 124 d of lactation. Body reserves were assessed every 2 wk. Feed intake was measured by pen during 3 separated periods after the start of the treatments (wk 2 to 3, wk 6 to 7, and wk 10 to 11). Feed intake, and milk yield and composition varied by breed, but no MEL effects were detected on dry matter intake, milk yield, milk composition, or fat and protein standardized milk in either breed. As a result of the unique composition of the implants and the variable body weights of the ewes, the MEL treatment dose (on average, 0.24 mg/kg of body weight) was 6.8% greater in the MN (lighter) than in the LC (heavier) ewes. Plasmatic melatonin markedly increased in the MEL-treated ewes (on average, 111%), but despite the amount of MEL used, the MN responded greatly compared with the LC ewes (150 vs. 63%, respectively). No differences in basal plasmatic melatonin were detected between breeds (6.4 ± 1.1 pg/mL, on average), indicating the greater responsiveness to the implants of the lighter MN ewes. Plasmatic prolactin tended to decrease in the MEL-treated ewes (-35%, on average), but the effect was significant only in the MN ewes (-54%), in agreement with their greater response to MEL. No effects of MEL treatment were detected on plasmatic IGF-I in either breed. Moreover, body reserves did not vary by effect of MEL treatment or breed throughout the experiment. In conclusion, the use of exogenous melatonin as MEL implants, together with the endogenous melatonin naturally produced under short-day photoperiod conditions, had no effects on the early-lactation performances of dairy sheep, despite their breed and level of production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have noted that the circulating testosterone concentration may affect the ability of spermatozoa to survive cryopreservation. However, few attempts to confirm such a relationship have been made. Wild ruminant species have very marked seasonal changes in their reproductive function and strong annual changes in their plasma testosterone concentration. OBJECTIVES The present work examines the influence of induced changes in testosterone secretion on sperm variables following conventional slow freezing and ultra-rapid freezing, using the Iberian ibex as an experimental model. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a first experiment, testosterone levels were reduced in the middle of the rutting season (December) using the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate (CA). In a second experiment, testosterone levels were increased at the end of the rutting season (January) via the use of the androgen testosterone propionate (TP). RESULTS During December, the testosterone concentration was found to be higher in the blood and seminal plasma of untreated males than in those of CA-treated males (p < 0.001 and p < 0.05, respectively). Compared with controls, the TP-treated animals had higher blood plasma testosterone concentrations but lower seminal plasma testosterone concentrations during January (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). The seminal vesicles of the TP-treated males were larger than those of untreated males (p < 0.05). When CA was administered, sperm viability improved compared with controls (p < 0.05), irrespective of the freezing protocol followed. For the ultra-rapid freezing procedure, the cryoresistance ratio for motility decreased when TP was administered (p < 0.05). The values for fresh sperm morphometric variables decreased during the 50 days after the end of CA treatment (p < 0.001) and increased over the same time after the end of TP treatment (p < 0.001). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The circulating testosterone concentration appears to influence sperm cryoresistance. This may explain the seasonal changes seen in sperm freezability in some species, independent of fresh sperm quality.

Abstract
Electroejaculation (EE) is frequently used to collect semen, but this procedure is both stressful and painful. In seasonal-breeding species the sensitivity to stressors might vary with season of the year when semen collection occurs, therefore, the present study was conducted to compare the responses when imposing the EE procedure, stress response to EE and fresh semen characteristics in goat bucks throughout the year. Semen was collected using EE from goat bucks once in autumn (mid-breeding season), winter (transition to the non-breeding season), spring (non-breeding season), and summer (beginning of the breeding season). The number of pulses applied during ejaculation was larger in the autumn and spring than winter and summer months. The number of vocalizations/pulse while bucks were ejaculating was greater in the summer than winter and spring months. The increase in heart rate was greater in spring than summer months. Cortisol concentration was least in the autumn, and concentration of creatine kinase (CK) was greatest in summer. Sperm mass motility was greater in autumn than spring months. Spermatozoa concentration, total number of spermatozoa ejaculated, motile spermatozoa ejaculated, and progressively motile spermatozoa were greater in the autumn and spring than in the winter and summer months. The bucks were less stressed by imposing EE procedures in the autumn, and buck responses were greater in the spring-summer period. Bucks had a greater incremental increase in serum CK and number of vocalizations in the summer months, indicating there was a greater muscular damage and quite likely pain associated with lesser semen quality.

Abstract
Twenty-four Colombian Creole, Romney Marsh, Hampshire and Corriedale ewes raised under high-altitude conditions in a non-seasonal country were used to determine and to characterize the onset of puberty and of regularity ovarian function since the age of 3months. They underwent blood collection for determination of progesterone and monthly weight assessment. Oestrus was assessed daily by a teaser ram. In all breeds, age at onset of puberty ranged from 5.4 to 6.9 months and age at onset of regular ovarian function ranged from 7.4 to 8.6 months. Colombian Creole showed a higher body development at onset of puberty: 73.5 ± 8.3% versus 56.2 ± 7.4 in Romney Marsh, 58.8 ± 10.4 in Hampshire, and 57.3 ± 8.0 in Corriedale (p < 0.05), as well as a higher relative daily weight gain (+17%, p < 0.05). A negative correlation between daily weight gain and age at onset of puberty was established. Progesterone at onset of puberty and of regularity did not differ between breeds, but characterization of the luteal phase by the progesterone area under the curve (P4-AUC) revealed at both time points significantly lower values for Creole lambs (p < 0.05). Decreased P4-AUC paralleled a higher proportion of short oestral cycles observed prior to onset of regularity in Creoles, whereas an increased proportion of extra-long cycles were recorded in Romney Marsh (p < 0.05). These results establish first reference data for economically important breeds raised under tropical conditions. In comparison with other breeds, Colombian Creole requires a higher body development to achieve puberty and that an important proportion of short characterizes its prepubertal period cycles.

Abstract
Today, sheep farmers in the Western Mediterranean de-season their ewes to achieve autumnal births. This strategy contrasts sharply with spring lambing further north, and provides benefits in terms of out-of-season availability of animal products. These competences are closely linked to specific sheep physiology and favorable Western Mediterranean climatic conditions. It is not known exactly how far back in the past the ability to de-season Mediterranean sheep breeds extends. This study shows that this practice existed seven millennia ago in Southern France, at an early stage of the major agricultural expansion of the Neolithic into the Western Mediterranean. To achieve this reproductive management regime, three prerequisites were required: (i) the ability of sheep to give birth in autumn, constituting early evidence for the genetic selection of specimens with prolonged reproductive fertility; (ii) intentional management of female and male interactions within the herd, which would have required good knowledge of the timing of the fertility cycle in ewes, and; (iii) adequate pasture resources to support lactation in the autumn, possibly favored by autumnal rains, substantiating previous paleoclimatological data for the existence of a Mediterranean-type precipitation regime at that time. Moreover, we also show that winter foddering of sheep occurred, using forest resources, and that this maintained good body weights for spring mating. These findings add pivotal information about shepherding practices and the socio-economic abilities of Early Neolithic communities, which allowed for the extension of their areas of influence from the Eastern Mediterranean area to the West during the Early Neolithic agricultural expansion in Europe.

Abstract
This study examines the influence of administering testosterone at the end of the mating season, on the responses (morphometric and functional) of ram and buck sperm to freezing-thawing. Five rams were administered 25 mg testosterone propionate (TP) subcutaneously in 2 mL of olive oil twice per week (Monday and Thursday) from October 1 to 31; 5 bucks received exactly the same treatment but from November 1 to 30. Control groups were administered 2 mL of olive oil without TP twice per week over the same period. In the rams, no significant differences were seen in plasma testosterone between the treated and control groups during treatment (0.8 ± 0.2 ng/mL vs 1.5 ± 0.5 ng/mL; P > 0.05). Significant differences were seen in this respect, however, in the bucks (4.3 ± 0.8 ng/mL and 6.9 ± 0.9 ng/mL; P < 0.05). In the rams, TP treatment increased (P < 0.05) the straight-line velocity (VSL), linearity (LIN), straightness (STR) and wobble (WOB) values in fresh sperm samples. Similarly, in the frozen-thawed samples, TP treatment increased the VSL, average path velocity (VAP), LIN and WOB values (P < 0.05) compared with controls. In the bucks, treatment with TP had no effect on any measured variable in fresh sperm; frozen-thawed sperm, however, returned greater VSL, LIN, STR, and WOB values (P < 0.05) than did controls. In the rams, treatment with TP led to a reduction in all fresh sperm head morphometric variables (P < 0.05). Freezing-thawing further reduced (P < 0.05) all morphometric variables in both the control and treated groups. In the bucks, treatment with TP increased (P < 0.05) the length, area, and perimeter of fresh sperm cells, unlike that seen in ram sperm. Compared with fresh sperm, freezing-thawing led to reduced (P < 0.05) morphometric variables in both the control and treated bucks, except for the sperm head width, which in the controls remained unchanged. In conclusion, TP treatment at the end of the mating season affected fresh sperm quality, in both Spanish Merino rams and Murciano-Granadina bucks, in a species-specific manner, but improved the sperm kinetic variables after freezing-thawing in both species, apparently improving sperm cryoresistance. Treatment with TP affects the dimensions of the sperm head in a species-specific manner.

Abstract
The direct role of melatonin in mammary glands of dairy goats has remained obscure. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of melatonin membrane receptors (MT1 and MT2) in the pituitary and mammary glands of dairy goats during lactation, and to investigate the role of melatonin in mammary function. Both MT1 and MT2 were consistently expressed in the pituitary and mammary eight glands throughout the lactation period, and their levels were lower in 9 March (group I), June (group III), and September (group V) than in May (group II) and August (group IV). The expression patterns of pituitary and mammary MT1 and MT2 were consistent with those of blood melatonin during lactation. Furthermore, the mammary prolactin (PRL), and pituitary growth hormone (GH) and PRL mRNA expression showed an inverse trend in relation to blood melatonin levels. In mammary tissues, MT1 and MT2 immunoreactivity was predominantly located in the mammary epithelial cells (MECs). In addition, a dose- and time-dependent inhibition on cell viability was observed in cultured MECs. At the dose of 10 and 100 pg/ml, melatonin decreased mammary β-casein and PRL expression. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of melatonin were blocked by luzindole, a nonselective MT1 and MT2 receptor antagonist. In addition, melatonin promoted MT1 and MT2 expression in cultured MECs. In conclusion, the presence of MT1 and MT2 in the pituitary and mammary glands and the inhibitory effects of melatonin on cell viability, β-casein, and PRL expression in MECs suggest the potential regulation by melatonin in goat mammary function.

Abstract
The study was designed to determine the effect of endotoxin-induced inflammation on luteinizing hormone (LH) synthesis and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor expression in the pars tuberalis (PT) of ewes during anestrous season and follicular phase taking into account the time of the day. Moreover, the effect of inflammation on the release of melatonin and its type I receptor gene expression in the PT was also determined. Lipopolysaccharide administration reduced nocturnal release of melatonin only during anestrous season, but it did not influence the gene expression of melatonin type I receptor in the PT. Inflammation inhibited nocturnal increase in the gene and protein expression of LH in the PT during the follicular phase. Since in day-active species nocturnal accumulation of LH protein in the pituitary precedes the LH surge, this lowering of LH content may delay or disturb the surge occurrence. Suppression of LH secretion could have resulted from the decreased sensitivity of the PT on the action of GnRH because inflammation reduced GnRH receptor expression. The study suggests that the ability of endotoxin to suppress LH synthesis in the PT may be another mechanism by which inflammation disturbs reproductive neuroendocrine axis in seasonal breeders.

Abstract
The secretion of the hormone melatonin reliably reflects environmental light conditions. Among numerous actions, in seasonal breeders, melatonin may regulate the secretion of the gonadotropins acting via its corresponding receptors occurring in the Pars Tuberalis (PT). However, it was previously found that the secretory activity of the pituitary may be dependent on the immune status of the animal. Therefore, this study was designed to determine the role of melatonin in the modulation of luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion from the PT explants collected from saline- and endotoxin-treated ewes in the follicular phase of the oestrous cycle. Twelve Blackhead ewes were sacrificed 3 h after injection with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 400 ng/kg) or saline, and the PTs were collected. Each PT was cut into 4 explants, which were then divided into 4 groups: I, incubated with 'pure' medium 199; II, treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) (100 pg/mL); III, treated with melatonin (10 nmol/mL); and IV, incubated with GnRH and melatonin. Melatonin reduced (p < 0.05) GnRH-induced secretion of LH only in the PT from saline-treated ewes. Explants collected from LPS-treated ewes were characterized by lower (p < 0.05) GnRH-dependent response in LH release. It was also found that inflammation reduced the gene expression of the GnRH receptor and the MT1 melatonin receptors in the PT. Therefore, it was shown that inflammation affects the melatonin action on LH secretion from the PT, which may be one of the mechanisms via which immune/inflammatory challenges disturb reproduction processes in animals.

Abstract
The present study was undertaken to assess the effect of seasons on scrotal circumference, semen characteristics, seminal plasma composition, and sperm motility during liquid storage of INRA180 rams. The semen was collected from five mature INRA180 rams (2-3 years of age) during one year (from April 2014 to March 2015). Scrotal circumferences, semen characteristics, some biochemical parameters of seminal plasma were evaluated. Immediately after collection and evaluation, the semen was pooled and extended in skim milk (SM) at 15°C to reach 0.8×109 spermatozoa/ml. Thereafter, samples were evaluated at different storage times (0, 8, and 24h). The results showed that scrotal circumference, semen quality and the concentration of total protein in seminal plasma were relatively constant during the year (P>0.05). However, total lipid and cholesterol concentrations increased significantly (P<0.001) in winter and summer. The result showed also that progressive motility was higher in winter and summer after 24h of storage (P<0.01). In contrast, no difference was recorded regarding total motility (P>0.05). To conclude, the INRA180 rams have the ability to produce semen with high quality all over the year. The only parameters showing seasonal variations are cholesterol, total lipid, and progressive motility.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that, in conjunction with dynamic changes in the secretion of GnRH from the hypothalamus, paracrine interactions within the pituitary gland play an important role in the regulation of fertility during the annual reproductive cycle. Morphological studies have provided evidence for close associations between gonadotropes and lactotropes and gap junction coupling between these cells in a variety of species. The physiological significance of this cellular interaction was supported by subsequent studies revealing the expression of prolactin receptors in both the pars distalis and pars tuberalis regions of the pituitary. This cellular interaction is critical for adequate gonadotropin output because, in the presence of dopamine, prolactin can negatively regulate the LH response to GnRH. Receptor signaling studies showed that signal convergence at the level of protein kinase C and phospholipase C within the gonadotrope underlies the resulting inhibition of LH secretion. Although this is a conserved mechanism present in all species studied so far, in seasonal breeders such as the sheep and the horse, this mechanism is regulated by photoperiod, as it is only apparent during the long days of spring and summer. At this time of year, the nonbreeding season of the sheep coincides with the breeding season of the horse, indicating that this inhibitory system plays different roles in short- and long-day breeders. Although in the sheep, it contributes to the complete suppression of the reproductive axis, in the horse, it is likely to participate in the fine-tuning of gonadotropin output by preventing gonadotrope desensitization. The photoperiodic regulation of this inhibitory mechanism appears to rely on alterations in the folliculostellate cell population. Indeed, electron microscopic studies have recently shown increased folliculostellate cell area together with upregulation of their adherens junctions during the spring and summer. The association between gonadotropes and lactotropes could also underlie an interaction between the gonadotropic and prolactin axes in the opposite direction. In support of this alternative, a series of studies have demonstrated that GnRH stimulates prolactin secretion in sheep through a mechanism that does not involve the mediatory actions of LH or FSH and that this stimulatory effect of GnRH on the prolactin axis is seasonally regulated. Collectively, these findings highlight the importance of intercellular communications within the pituitary in the control of gonadotropin and prolactin secretion during the annual reproductive cycle in seasonal breeders.

circadian photo-period disruption during pregnancy on fetal blood reproductive hormone levels is scarce. This study used ewes and their fetuses to determine the
effects of circadian photo-period disruption (deprivation of darkness) on follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estradiol, and progesterone in
maternal and fetal circulation at late gestation. Pregnant ewes (gestational age: 135 ± 3 days) were randomly placed into control and dark deprivation groups.
The control (N = 5) and dark deprivation (N = 5) groups were exposed to a fixed 12 h light/12 h dark cycle and a 24 h constant light cycle, respectively, for 2
days. Dark deprivation up-regulated follicle-stimulating hormone and estradiol levels and down-regulated progesterone levels in both maternal and fetal
circulation, and up-regulated luteinizing hormone levels in fetal but not maternal circulation. These results provide new information about how circadian
photo-period disruption during pregnancy could alter the release of certain reproductive hormones into fetal blood, which may influence the development of fetal
organs in utero, as well as long-term health.

Abstract
A well-defined season of sexual rest controlled by photoperiod is observed in female sheep and goats during spring and summer, delineating their "anestrous season"; bucks also decrease sexual activity at about the same time. Nutrition and/or socio-sexual stimuli play only secondary roles. However, the presence of sexually active males can reduce the length of seasonal anestrus. Whether it can also completely suppress anestrus has not been investigated. Here we tested this in goats in 3 experiments, using bucks rendered sexually active out of season by exposure to long days. The continuous presence of these males prevented goats to display seasonal anestrus: 12/14 females cycled the year round, vs. 0/13 and 0/11 for females with un-treated bucks or without bucks (experiment 1). When active bucks were removed, females immediately entered anestrus (7/7 stopped ovulating vs. 1/7 if maintained with active bucks; experiment 2). Finally, 7/7 anestrous does with bucks in sexual rest since 1.5months commenced cycling rapidly during mid-anestrous, when these bucks became sexually active following a treatment with artificial long days, vs. 0/7 with un-treated bucks or no bucks (experiment 3). The presence/withdrawal of active bucks had a highly significant effect in the three experiments (P≤0.002). Therefore, the presence of a mating opportunity can completely override the photoperiodic inhibition of reproduction of females throughout the anestrous season. Results suggest that we must re-evaluate the relative contributions of photoperiod vs. other external cues in controlling seasonal reproduction, thus offering new non-pharmaceutical ways for controlling out-of-season reproduction in small ruminants.

Abstract
Following domestication, sheep (Ovis aries) have become essential farmed animals across the world through adaptation to a diverse range of environments and varied production systems. Climate-mediated selective pressure has shaped phenotypic variation and has left genetic "footprints" in the genome of breeds raised in different agroecological zones. Unlike numerous studies that have searched for evidence of selection using only population genetics data, here, we conducted an integrated coanalysis of environmental data with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) variation. By examining 49,034 SNPs from 32 old, autochthonous sheep breeds that are adapted to a spectrum of different regional climates, we identified 230 SNPs with evidence for selection that is likely due to climate-mediated pressure. Among them, 189 (82%) showed significant correlation (P ≤ 0.05) between allele frequency and climatic variables in a larger set of native populations from a worldwide range of geographic areas and climates. Gene ontology analysis of genes colocated with significant SNPs identified 17 candidates related to GTPase regulator and peptide receptor activities in the biological processes of energy metabolism and endocrine and autoimmune regulation. We also observed high linkage disequilibrium and significant extended haplotype homozygosity for the core haplotype TBC1D12-CH1 of TBC1D12. The global frequency distribution of the core haplotype and allele OAR22_18929579-A showed an apparent geographic pattern and significant (P ≤ 0.05) correlations with climatic variation. Our results imply that adaptations to local climates have shaped the spatial distribution of some variants that are candidates to underpin adaptive variation in sheep.

Abstract
The effect of intravaginal fluorogestone acetate (FGA) sponges on prolactin levels (PRL) and correlations between PRL and milk somatic cell count (SCC) and steroid hormones levels of Damascus-local cross goats during transitional period to anestrous were investigated in this study. Fifty-six goats were assigned to three groups. Group 1 (FGA, n = 19) was treated with 40 mg FGA and equine chorionic gonadotropin (600 IU, i.m.) at time of sponge withdrawal (day 0). Group 2 (FGA-PGF; n = 19) was treated similar to group 1 but was also injected with dinoprost tromethamine (naturally occurring PGF2α) (10 mg, i.m.) on day 0. Control goats (n = 18) were left untreated. On day 0, five fertile bucks were turned in with all goats. Milk and blood samples were collected on days -13 (day of sponge insertion), -6, 0, 1, 2, 7, 13, and 20. Prolactin levels were at lowest values on day -13 of the study and increased (p < 0.05) from day -6 to day 20 in all groups. A significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between PRL and progesterone and between PRL and estradiol levels was found in this study. No significant correlation was found between PRL and SCC of all groups during the study except on days 2 and 20 where PRL levels were correlated (p < 0.05) with SCC of left udder halves of FGA group. In conclusion, estrus induction with FGA resulted in significant increase in PRL. A positive correlation was found between PRL and steroid hormones, but there was no correlation between PRL and goat milk SCC.

Abstract
Biological clocks are genetically encoded oscillators that allow organisms to keep track of their environment. Among them, the circadian system is a highly conserved timing structure that regulates several physiological, metabolic and behavioural functions with periods close to 24 h. Time is also crucial for everyday activities that involve conscious time estimation. Timing behaviour in the second-to-minutes range, known as interval timing, involves the interaction of cortico-striatal circuits. In this review, we summarize current findings on the neurobiological basis of the circadian system, both at the genetic and behavioural level, and also focus on its interactions with interval timing and seasonal rhythms, in order to construct a multi-level biological clock.

Abstract
This study examines whether photoperiod and/or melatonin treatments can improve sperm variables outside the breeding season in the Iberian ibex-a model species for wild mountain ruminants-thus helping in the collection of high quality sperm beyond the normal breeding season for depositing in genetic resource banks. Adult Iberian ibex males (n=17) were divided into four treatment groups: (1) controls under the natural photoperiod (control group; n=4), (2) treatment with melatonin implants on December 22nd, February 22nd and April 22nd (group WS-M; n=5), (3) treatment with short photoperiod cycles, i.e., 2 months of long days followed by melatonin implants (to emulate 2 months of short days) throughout the year (group PHPld+M; n=4), and (4) treatment with melatonin implants on June 22nd and August 22nd (group SS-M; n=4). The interaction treatment x season had a strong influence on testis size (P<0.05), the size of the seminal vesicles (P<0.001), the percentage of abnormal sperms (P<0.05), and percentage non-progressive (P<0.05) and progressive (P<0.001) sperm motility. In groups WS-M and PHPld+M, the normal springtime physiological reductions in testis size, non-progressive sperm motility and acrosome integrity were prevented. The values for the studied sperm variables were, however, reduced in the natural breeding season at the end of the experimental period in group PHPld+M, although not in group WS-M. The pattern of melatonin administration in group SS-M conferred no advantages on reproductive functionality. These results suggest that lengthening the short day period after the winter solstice (the WS-M treatment) extends reproductive activity in this species, allowing good quality sperm to be recovered for conservation purposes during the non-breeding season.

Abstract
At temperate latitudes, many mammals and birds show internally timed, long-term changes in seasonal physiology, synchronised to the seasons by changing day length (photoperiod). Photoperiodic control of thyroid hormone levels in the hypothalamus dictates the timing. This is effected through reciprocal regulation of thyroid hormone deiodinase gene expression. The local synthesis of type 2 deiodinase (Dio2) promotes triiodothyronine (T3) production and summer biology, whereas type 3 deiodinase (Dio3) promotes T3 degradation and winter biology. In the present study, we investigated the extent to which the hypothalamic expression of Dio2 and Dio3 is circannually regulated in the Soay sheep, a short-day breeding mammal. Male sheep were exposed to a long photoperiod (LP; 16 : 24 h light/dark cycle) or a short photoperiod (SP; 8 : 24 h light/dark cycle), for up to 28 weeks to establish four different endocrine states: (i) LP animals in a spring/summer-like state of reproductive arrest; (ii) LP refractory (LPR) animals showing spontaneous reproductive reactivation; (iii) SP animals showing autumn/winter-like reproductive activation; and (iv) SP refractory (SPR) animals showing spontaneous reproductive arrest. A complex pattern of hypothalamic Dio2 and Dio3 expression was observed, revealing distinctive photoperiod-driven and internally timed effects for both genes. The patterns of expression differed both spatially and temporally, with phases of peak Dio2 expression in the median eminence and tuberoinfundibular sulcus, as well as in the paraventricular zone (PVZ) (maximal under LP), whereas Dio3 expression was always confined to the PVZ (maximal under SP). These effects likely reflect the distinct roles of these enzymes in the localised control of hypothalamic T3 levels. The spontaneous decline in Dio2 and spontaneous increase in Dio3 in LPR animals occurred with a corresponding decline in thyroid-stimulating hormone β expression in the neighbouring pars tuberalis (PT), although this relationship did not hold for the corresponding Dio2 increase/Dio3 decrease seen in SPR animals. We conclude that internally timed and spatially regulated changes in Dio2 and Dio3 expression may drive the cycling between breeding and nonbreeding states in long-lived seasonal species, and may be either PT-dependent or PT-independent at different phases of the circannual cycle.

Abstract
Changes in progesterone secretion in intact ewes (7 or 9 per breed) and luteinizing hormone secretion in ovariectomized, estradiol-implanted ewes (9 or 10 per breed) were monitored for 12 mo in Suffolk, tropically adapted St. Croix, and OOS ewes. The OOS line is a composite population of 50% Dorset, 25% Rambouillet, and 25% Finnish Landrace breeding that was selected for 10 yr for ability to lamb in October and early November. Ewes were isolated from rams, and blood samples were collected twice weekly. Circulating prolactin concentrations were also determined from blood samples collected near the summer and winter solstice and vernal and autumnal equinox. Intact OOS ewes entered anestrus later, began the subsequent breeding season sooner, and had a shorter seasonal anestrus than Suffolk and St. Croix ewes (P ≤ 0.005). St. Croix ewes did not differ from Suffolk ewes in date of onset or cessation of breeding or duration of anestrus (P ≥ 0.06). Breed differences in duration of luteinizing hormone inhibition in ovariectomized ewes were essentially identical to those observed for duration of anestrous. Prolactin concentrations varied during the year: annual changes were larger in relatively seasonal Suffolk ewes than in tropically-derived St. Croix ewes (P<0.01), and OOS ewes were intermediate to, and tended to differ from (P<0.10), the other two breeds. We conclude that OOS ewes developed by selection for fertility in spring matings had an abbreviated seasonal anestrus that is one of the shortest ever reported for temperate breeds, and that tropical St. Croix sheep did not have a shorter seasonal anestrus than Suffolk sheep under temperate conditions and ram isolation.

Abstract
Most mammals living at temperate latitudes exhibit marked seasonal variations in reproduction. In long-lived species, it is assumed that timely physiological alternations between a breeding season and a period of sexual rest depend upon the ability of day length (photoperiod) to synchronise an endogenous timing mechanism called the circannual clock. The sheep has been extensively used to characterise the time-measurement mechanisms of seasonal reproduction. Melatonin, secreted only during the night, acts as the endocrine transducer of the photoperiodic message. The present review is concerned with the endocrine mechanisms of seasonal reproduction in sheep and the evidence that long day length and thyroid hormones are mandatory to their proper timing. Recent evidence for a circadian-based molecular mechanism within the pars tuberalis of the pituitary, which ties the short duration melatonin signal reflecting long day length to the hypothalamic increase of triiodothyronine (T3) through a thyroid-stimulating hormone/deiodinase2 paracrine mechanism is presented and evaluated in this context. A parallel is also drawn with the golden hamster, a long-day breeder, aiming to demonstrate that features of seasonality appear to be phylogenetically conserved. Finally, potential mechanisms of T3 action within the hypothalamus/median eminence in relationship to seasonal timing are examined.

Abstract
This study examines the patterns of melatonin secretion during postnatal development in wild (mouflon; n = 7) and domestic (Spanish Merino; n = 6) female lambs under their natural photoperiod conditions. The aim was to determine whether these types of sheep which differ in the timing of puberty, also differ in the establishment of daily melatonin secretory rhythms and/or in the nocturnal plasma melatonin secretion. In addition, the time when the lambs first reached nocturnal levels of melatonin similar to adults was also evaluated. For this purpose, the melatonin secretion in lambs was compared with those of their mothers. A day/night (D/N) difference in plasma melatonin concentration was noticed as early as 1 day after birth in the Merino female lambs (D: 5.9 +/- 1.0 pg/ml compared to N: 22.0 +/- 3.3 pg/ml; p < 0.05), and by 1 week after birth in the mouflon female lambs (D: 4.9 +/- 0.3 pg/ml compared to N: 56.9 +/- 15.3 pg/ml; p < 0.05). An effect of the genotype (p < 0.05) and age (p < 0.01) was detected on mean nocturnal plasma melatonin concentrations, which were lower in the Merino than in the mouflon lambs. Night-time plasma concentration of melatonin was also high in mouflon than in Merino mothers (p < 0.05). No differences were detected between the wild genotype and the domestic one in the time when the lambs first reached nocturnal levels of melatonin similar to those of their mothers.
