The organization of the digital library

New activities and changing roles of health sciences librarians: a systematic review, 1990-2012

OBJECTIVE

The paper identifies and documents new health sciences librarian activities and roles during the period from 1990-2012.

METHODS

A systematic review of the literature was conducted using MEDLINE, Library and Information Abstracts, Library Literature, Scopus, and Web of Science. To find new roles that might not yet have been described in the literature, job announcements published in the Medical Library Association email discussion list archives from 2008-2012 were searched. For inclusion, an article needed to contain a substantive description of a new role and/or activity performed by librarians and be in the field of medical or health sciences librarianship. Papers that did not describe an actual (rather than proposed) librarian role were excluded.

RESULTS

NEW ROLES IDENTIFIED THROUGH THE LITERATURE SEARCH WERE: embedded librarians (such as clinical informationist, bioinformationist, public health informationist, disaster information specialist); systematic review librarian; emerging technologies librarian; continuing medical education librarian; grants development librarian; and data management librarian. New roles identified through job announcements were digital librarian, metadata librarian, scholarly communication librarian, and translational research librarian. New twists to old roles were also identified: clinical medical librarian, instruction librarian, outreach librarian, and consumer health librarian.

CONCLUSIONS

While the main purposes of health sciences librarianship remain the same, the new roles represent major new activities so that, for many librarians, daily on-the-job work is completely different.

IMPLICATIONS

This list of new activities should inform students contemplating medical librarianship careers, guide formal and continuing education programs, and encourage other librarians to consider these new services.

Creating a pediatric digital library for pediatric health care providers and families: using literature and data to define common pediatric problems

The goal of this study was to complete a literature-based needs assessment with regard to common pediatric problems encountered by pediatric health care providers (PHCPs) and families, and to develop a problem-based pediatric digital library to meet those needs. The needs assessment yielded 65 information sources. Common problems were identified and categorized, and the Internet was manually searched for authoritative Web sites. The created pediatric digital library (www.generalpediatrics.com) used a problem-based interface and was deployed in November 1999. From November 1999 to November 2000, the number of hyperlinks and authoritative Web sites increased 51.1 and 32.2 percent, respectively. Over the same time, visitors increased by 57.3 percent and overall usage increased by 255 percent. A pediatric digital library has been created that begins to bring order to general pediatric resources on the Internet. This pediatric digital library provides current, authoritative, easily accessed pediatric information whenever and wherever the PHCPs and families want assistance.

Implementing and integrating computer-based activities into a problem-based gross anatomy curriculum

A problem-based learning curriculum in gross anatomy was begun for a limited number of students to address unsuccessful methodology inherent in a traditional instructional approach. To eliminate some concerns associated with the laboratory component, computer-based instruction and other computer- related activities were actively integrated into the total instructional process. Prosections, directions, quizzes, images, and grades were provided in lab at table-side computer workstations, in the library, and on the web. Results were assessed through questionnaires in which students rated their learning experience according to a Likert-type scale. Success was measured by quantitative improvements in student perception. In this three-year study, observations and measurements have suggested increasingly positive student attitudes toward educational technology, for networks as a faster and more effective method of student/faculty communication, and in the utilization of computer-based instruction for greater flexibility and efficiency in learning. This allowed a rethinking of the structure and content of the curriculum by the faculty, which permitted reduced laboratory time, more small-group activity, and less reliance on staff.

Solutions to challenges facing a university digital library and press

During the creation of a university digital library and press intended to serve as a medical reference and education tool for health care providers and their patients, six distinct and complex digital publishing challenges were encountered. Over nine years, through a multidisciplinary approach, solutions were devised to the challenges of digital content ownership, management, mirroring, translation, interactions with users, and archiving. The result is a unique, author-owned, internationally mirrored, university digital library and press that serves as an authoritative medical reference and education tool for users around the world. The purpose of this paper is to share the valuable digital publishing lessons learned and outline the challenges facing university digital libraries and presses.
