An In Vitro Evaluation of the Sealing Ability of a New Root-canal–obturation System

Comparative evaluation of sealing ability of gutta percha and resilon as root canal filling materials- a systematic review

This systematic review aims to comparatively evaluate the sealing ability gutta-percha and resilon as root canal filling materials. A Medline search was conducted to identify in-vitro studies published between October 01, 2004 and October 01, 2019, conducted on human extracted teeth, published in English and testing the sealing ability of gutta-percha and resilon as root canal filling materials using fluid filtration method. The search identified fifty-five published articles. After a thorough screening, five articles meeting the selection, and validity assessment criteria were critically appraised. The results indicated that during the initial time-period, resilon/epiphany sealer has better sealing ability than gutta-percha. However, over a period of time the resilon system demonstrated increased fluid flow. Gutta-percha with AH plus sealer showed the best long term sealing ability.

In vitro Interrelationship between Apical Fill and Apical Leakage Using Three Different Obturation Techniques

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the apical fill in relation to apical leakage using three different obturating techniques - Single Cone, Ultrafil 3D, and lateral condensation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixty-six mandibular single-rooted premolar teeth were selected and were randomly assigned into three different groups of obturating techniques. The canals were prepared using 0.4/25 HyFlex CM (Coltene Endo) rotary system file and obturated with corresponding HyFlex CM Single Cone, Ultrafil 3D injectable technique, and lateral condensation. AH Plus (Dentsply, Detrey) has been used as the sealer. Twenty teeth each were assigned to the three experimental groups, and six teeth were used as positive and negative controls (3 in each group). Fluid filtration technique was used to determine the amount of apical leakage. The evaluation was done for 8 min at the interval of every 2 min. The same teeth were sectioned and a spectroscopic examination was done at 2 mm and 4 mm distance from the apices. The obtained data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance test followed by post hoc turkeys test for multiple comparisons.

RESULTS

The mean apical leakage was maximum for lateral condensation when compared to the Single Cone and Ultrafil 3D. The amount of apical fill at 2 mm and at 4 mm was found to be more in the Single Cone than the other two techniques.

CONCLUSION

The present study concluded that Single Cone obturation technique exhibited more gutta-percha filled area in the canal which led to decreased apical leakage than Ultrafil 3D and lateral condensation techniques, proving to be more effective in achieving a complete three-dimensional apical seal.

Expansion of Gutta-percha in contact with various concentrations of zinc oxide-eugenol sealer: A three-dimensional volumetric study using spiral computed tomography

Aim:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the three-dimensional expansion of Gutta-percha (GP), at various powder/liquid ratios, of a zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE)-based sealer using spiral computed tomography (SCT).

Materials and Methods:

Thirty-five freshly extracted human mandibular premolars were selected for this study. Cleaning and shaping were performed in all the teeth initially with hand K-files up to #25 and finally with RaCe rotary instruments (25/06). Teeth were randomly divided into five groups of 7 teeth each. Specimens were scanned using SCT. They were then viewed both cross-sectionally and longitudinally, with a constant thickness of 1 mm/slice. The volume of root canal in each tooth was estimated. Obturation was performed by GP points (25/04) and ZOE-based root canal sealer in all groups with different powder-liquid ratio. Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4, had powder/liquid ratio of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4, respectively, while in the control group, no sealer was used. The obturation was performed by sealer coated single cone GP. A second SCT scan was performed to determine the volume of GP and sealer in all four groups 1 day after obturation. The third and fourth SCT scans were taken 7 and 30 days after obturation, respectively. The mean volume of GP per group was calculated. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Inter-group comparisons were done using Scheffe post hoc multiple comparisons test.

Results:

All groups with sealer showed expansion of GP at both 7^th day and 30^th day, which was statistically significant from the GP volume at 1^st day. Groups 2 and 3 with powder/liquid ratio of 1:2 and 1:3 gave the highest mean volume values during 30 days period and showed significant expansion in comparison with Groups 1 and 4 with powder/liquid ratio of 1:1 and 1:4, respectively.

Conclusion:

Increasing the ratio of eugenol in sealer resulted in the volumetric expansion of GP. However, further studies should be performed to confirm the expansion of GP, leading to the achievement of fluid impervious seal.

Effect of photon induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) on bond strength to dentine of two root canal filling materials

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of photon induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) technique in combination with EDTA on bond strength of gutta-percha/AH Plus and Resilon/RealSeal SE root canal fillings to root dentine.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty freshly extracted human maxillary anterior teeth with intact straight roots, were instrumented endodontically with rotating ProTaper instruments and randomly divided into two experimental groups. In group 1 (n = 20), root canals were rinsed for 1 minute with 2 ml of 17% EDTA. In group 2 (n = 20), Er:YAG laser, with a 14 mm long 400 μ diameter tapered PIPS tip, was used for 1 minute with 2 ml of 17% EDTA. The laser parameters used were: 20 mJ per pulse, 15 Hz, 50 microsecond. In each experimental group, half of the root canals (n = 10) were obturated with gutta-percha/AH Plus and other half (n = 10) with Resilon/RealSeal SE. A micropush-out test was performed on sectiond specimens of the filled roots using a universal testing machine and resistance to failure plus failure modes were determined.

RESULTS

Both gutta-percha/AH Plus groups had higher bond strength to root dentin than the Resilon/RealSeal SE groups (P < 0.05). The smear layer removal protocol, with EDTA only or combining PIPS technique with EDTA, had no influence on bond strength of either gutta-percha/AH Plus, or Resilon/RealSeal SE (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Within the limitations of this study, it was found that the application of the PIPS technique did not have an affect on the push-out bond strength of Resilon/RealSeal SE root canal filling to dentin nor on the gutta-percha/AH Plus. Evaluation of the dentinal wall adaptation ability of MTA Fillapex using stereo electron microscope

Background:

An ideal root canal obturation requires a complete dentinal wall adaptation of sealer and Gutta-percha combinations without any gap formations.

Aims:

The aim of the study was to evaluate the dentinal wall adaptation ability of MTA Fillapex root canal sealer using stereo electron microscope (SEM).

Methods:

Twenty-four, single-rooted, human maxillary incisor teeth were used. All canals were prepared with a rotary nickel–titanium (Ni–Ti) instrument to a size F3 file. Teeth divided into two equal groups and one of the experimental groups was filled with AH Plus, and the other group was filled with MTA Fillapex using Gutta-percha single cone as a core material. The roots were prepared for SEM evaluation, and serial scanning electron photomicrographs were taken at ×50, ×100, ×500, and ×1000 magnifications. The gaps between the root canal sealer and canal walls were detected and measured in coronal, middle, and apical thirds. For each section, the highest value among the detected gap formations was recorded.

Statistical Analysis:

Mann–Whitney U-test, Freidman, and Wilcoxon tests were used.

Results:

The statistical analysis showed no significant difference between two sealers in terms of gap formation (P > 0.05).

Conclusions:

MTA Fillapex has a similar dentinal wall adaptation ability as AH Plus does.

Effect of gaseous ozone and light-activated disinfection on the surface hardness of resin-based root canal sealers

Although root canal instruments remove most of the content from the main root canal space, disinfection or irrigation plays an indispensable role in all areas of the root canal system, especially in parts that are inaccessible by instruments. The originality of this study was to investigate the effect of two novel disinfection techniques on the surface hardness of resin-based endodontic sealers using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Forty extracted single-rooted maxillary central human teeth were prepared and divided into four groups according to treatment methods. The first group was irrigated with saline and served as a control, other groups irrigated with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO); gaseous ozone; and light-activated disinfection (LAD). The groups were divided into two subgroups, according to the obturation method used: subgroup A: gutta-percha and AH plus; and subgroup B: EndoREZ/resin-coated cones. After obturation, atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurement was performed to analyze the surface hardness of the sealers. There was a significant difference between group 1A and group 3A (p < 0.05). Group 3B had the highest surface hardness values that were statistically different (p < 0.05). When disregarding the sealers, the ozone possessed statistically higher surface hardness values than the other groups in all root thirds (p < 0.05). The use of ozone and LAD may alter the surface hardness of resin-based sealers. The use of AFM can be considered an alternative hardness test techonology for sealing material.

Microscopic assessment of the sealing ability of three endodontic filling techniques

Background

Several techniques have been proposed for root canal filling. New rotary files, with non-standardized taper, are appearing, so, points adapted to the taper of the last instrument used to prepare the canal can help in the obturation process. The aim of this study is to assess the sealing ability of different root canal filling techniques.

Material and Methods

Root canals from 30 teeth were shaped with Mtwo and divided in three groups; A, standard lateral condensation with size 35 and 20 gutta-percha points; B, standard lateral condensation and injected gutta-percha; C, single gutta-percha point (standardized 35 Mtwo), continuous wave technique and injected gutta-percha. Root surfaces were covered with nail varnish, except for the apical 2 mm, and submerged in a NO3Ag2 solution; apical stain penetration was measured in mm. Data were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test with a 90% confidence interval.

Results

A and B groups showed stain leakage in the 90% of the cases, whereas it was of 80% for group C. Stain leakage intervals were 1-5 mm for groups A and B and 1-3 mm for group C. There were no statistically significant differences between the three studied groups (p>.05).

Conclusions

All the analyzed root canal filling techniques showed some apical stain leakage, without significant differences among them.

Sealing Efficacy of Single-cone Obturation Technique with MTA and CEM Cement: An in Vitro Bacterial Leakage Study

Background and aims. Various materials and methods have been introduced for obturating cleaned and shaped root canal systems. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the sealing ability of single-cone obturation technique with mineral trioxide aggregate and calcium-enriched mixture based on bacterial leakage approach.

Materials and methods. Sixty-four single-canal teeth were prepared and randomly divided into 5 groups, consisting of three experimental groups (n = 16) and two control groups (n = 8).In group 1, root canal obturation was performed using gutta-percha with 0.02 taper and AH26 sealer by lateral compaction technique. In groups 2 and 3, single Protaper gutta-percha cone was used for obturation with MTA and CEM cement, respectively. A bacterial leakage apparatus was utilized for leakage assessment for 60 days. Leakage comparison between the experimental groups was performed by one-way ANOVA using SPSS 16 statistical software.

Results. The mean bacterial leakage intervals in groups 1, 2 and 3 were 33.68 ± 9.39, 40.68 ± 11.03 and 39.56 ± 9.03 days, respectively. One-way ANOVA indicated no significant differences in bacterial leakage between the three experimen-tal groups (P = 0.109).

Conclusion. Single-cone obturation with well-fitted gutta-percha and MTA and CEM cement is an appropriate alternative for traditional lateral compaction technique.

Fracture resistance of overtly flaring root canals filled with resin-based obturation material

Background:

Reinforcement of root canals obturated with Resilon was reported by several investigators, but no studies reported the reinforcement of overtly flared root canals obturated with Resilon material. The aim of this study was to investigate the fracture resistance of overtly flared root canals filled with Resilon as compared to similar root canals filled with gutta-percha (GP).

Materials and Methods:

Sixty single-rooted premolars were divided randomly into six groups. Group 1 served as control group. The control group was sub-divided into two groups, a negative group and a positive group. The negative group consisted of root canals that were only cleaned from residual pulpal tissues, however, the positive group had prepared and overtly flared root canals without obturation. Groups 2 and 4 were shaped using 0.04 taper rotary files, while groups 3 and 5 were shaped using 0.06 taper rotary files. Before obturation, the last four groups were further flared coronally with a reverse cone diamond bur. Groups 2 and 3 were obturated with GP and a resin-based sealer, while groups 4 and 5 were obturated with Resilon and Epiphany self-etching primer and Epiphany sealer. Roots were then fixed into a universal testing machine and vertically loaded until fracture. SPSS software (Release 9.0 for Windows, SPSS, Chicago, USA) was used to perform the statistical analysis.

Results:

Fracture resistance measurements showed that there were differences in resistance to fracture among the experimental groups (ANOVA, P < 0.0001). Mean values of the loading force applied to the negative control group were the highest at 1.81 KN, whereas the mean values for the Resilon groups (Groups 4 and 5) at 1.13 KN and 1.54 KN were found to be higher than the GP groups (Groups 2 and 3) at 0.45 KN and 0.88 KN, respectively. Tukey's post hoc test showed that there was no statistical difference between the mean values of the negative control group and Group 5 (P = 0.69).

Conclusion:

Obturation of overtly flared roots with Resilon material increased the resistance of these teeth to vertical root fracture.

Expansion of gutta-percha in contact with various concentrations of zinc oxide-eugenol sealer: a three-dimensional volumetric study

INTRODUCTION

Successful endodontic treatment depends on achievement of a fluid-tight seal that is not possible solely with gutta-percha and requires the use of a root canal sealer. Eugenol, which is a principal component in zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) based sealers, is reported to produce a volumetric expansion of gutta-percha. The aim of this study was to evaluate the three-dimensional expansion of gutta-percha at various powder/liquid ratios of ZOE-based sealer by using spiral computed tomography (SCT).

METHODS

Fifty freshly extracted premolars with single canal were decoronated and instrumented by using RaCe rotary instruments (35/06). The teeth were divided into 5 groups of 10 each, and volume of the canal was measured by using SCT. The teeth were then obturated with gutta-percha cones (35/04) in groups ZE 1:1 to ZE 1:4 with Pulp Canal Sealer EWT (ZOE-based) with powder/liquid ratio of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4, respectively, and gutta-percha alone in control group (no sealer group). The filled volume in each canal was measured by using SCT 1 day, 7 days, and 1 month after obturation, and percentages of obturated volume and of volume changes in groups over time were calculated. The data were statistically analyzed by using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc multiple comparison tests.

RESULTS

The groups ZE 1:2 and ZE 1:3 gave the highest mean volume values during a 1-month period and were significantly different in comparison with groups ZE 1:1 and ZE 1:4 (P < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

Increasing the ratio of eugenol in sealer resulted in volumetric increase of gutta-percha. However, further studies should be performed to confirm the expansion and sealing ability of gutta-percha of the size corresponding to the prepared canal, leading to the achievement of fluid impervious seal.

Apical sealing of root canal fillings performed with five different endodontic sealers: analysis by fluid filtration

Objectives

To evaluate the sealing ability of five root canal sealers, including two experimental cements (MBP and MTA-Obtura) using the fluid filtration method.

Material and Methods

Teeth were divided into 5 study groups: G1-AH Plus; G2-Acroseal; G3-Sealapex; G4-MBP; G5-MTA-Obtura; and two controls. Chemical-mechanical preparation was performed with ProFile rotary nickel-titanium instruments 1 mm short of the apical foramen. The sealing ability was evaluated by fluid filtration at 15, 30, and 60 days.

Results

The statistical analysis showed significant difference between the materials at different periods (p<0.05). AH Plus and MBP had similar leakage values at 15 and 60 days, alternating with significant reduction at 30 days, while the other materials showed progressive increase in leakage values. Acroseal and Sealapex presented the best results at 15 days and the worst at 60 days.

Conclusions

All sealers evaluated presented fluid leakage, with AH Plus and MBP showing the best results at the end of the experimental period. Acroseal, Sealapex, and MTA-Obtura presented increase in leakage values at longer observation periods.

Comparision of biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of two new root canal sealers

The aim of this study was to investigate the remote organ toxicity and connective tissue reaction of two new root canal sealers ("GuttaFlow(®)" and "EndoREZ(®)") and to compare them with zinc oxide eugenol sealer using biochemical and histopathological parameters. A total of 60 white albino Wistar rats were used in the study. 0.1ml of GuttaFlow(®), EndoREZ(®) or Kerr Pulp Canal Sealer(®) were administered subcutaneously into the mid-dorsal thoracic region of rats (15 in each group). Control rats were given saline only. Rats were decapitated after 24h, on day 7 and on day 30 of the experiment and tissue samples from lung, liver, kidney and skin were removed for the determination of malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels. In parallel, tissues were also examined histologically. Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, and creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), concentrations (BUN) were measured to assess liver and kidney functions, respectively. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were also assayed in serum samples. No statistical differences were found among the control and EndoREZ(®), GuttaFlow(®) and Kerr Pulp Canal sealers regarding tissue MDA, GSH levels or serum parameters (p>0.05) at all time points examined. Both of the new root canal sealers showed good compatibility and acceptable tissue toxicity.

A laboratory evaluation of the physical and mechanical properties of selected root canal sealers

AIM

To evaluate and compare the porosity, degree of conversion (DC) and hardness of two resin-based sealers; RealSeal and EndoRez, and a silicon-based sealer; GuttaFlow to that of a traditional zinc oxide-based sealer; TubliSeal.

METHODOLOGY

For porosity, four samples from each sealer were prepared and scanned using a SkyScan 1072 Micro-CT. Porosity was then calculated using specialized software. For DC, 10 samples from each sealer were prepared and placed onto a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrometer. Spectra readings were carried out before and after curing of the sealers, and the DC for each sealer was calculated. For hardness, 10 samples from each sealer were prepared and then tested using a Wallace hardness tester. SPSS software was used for statistical analysis of the data using one-way anova and independent t-tests.

RESULTS

TubliSeal had the highest percentage porosity (3.52%), whilst RealSeal had the lowest percentage porosity (0.41%). Statistically significant differences (P = 0.01) in porosity were present between all groups except between RealSeal and EndoRez groups. RealSeal exhibited a significantly higher DC% than EndoRez (P = 0.01), whereas EndoRez had the highest hardness number [28.54 Vickers hardness number (VHN)] whilst TubliSeal showed the lowest (13.57 VHN). Statistically significant differences in hardness were found between all groups (P = 0.01) except between RealSeal and EndoRez groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Resin-based sealers had less porosity, greater hardness and a high DC.

Comparative analysis of leakage in root canal fillings performed with gutta-percha and Resilon cones with AH Plus and Epiphany sealers

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to compare the leakage of root canal fillings of gutta-percha or Resilon cones in association with AH Plus or Epiphany sealer.

STUDY DESIGN

Four groups of premolars (n = 64) were instrumented to size 45/.04 ProFile and filled with laterally compacted gutta-percha cones or Resilon cones in association with AH Plus or Epiphany sealer. The specimens were stored for 2 weeks at 37 degrees C and 100% humidity. After that, leakage was measured using the fluid filtration method and determined as microL/min.10 psi.

RESULTS

Homogeneity of variance and multiple comparisons tests were performed and indicated that root fillings with the combination of gutta-percha cones and AH Plus sealer showed lower leakage values (P < .05) than the other groups.

CONCLUSION

Considering the experimental conditions and the results obtained, it was concluded that fillings made with gutta-percha cones in combination with AH Plus sealer had the best performance.

Resin materials for root canal obturation

With the appearance of more in vivo and ex vivo publications, methacrylate based resin sealers are becoming more popular in endodontics. Their ease of use and favorable clinical performance offer an attractive alternative to conventional endodontics. This article reviews the development of resin-based sealers and biocompatibility tests. The many, mostly opposing views are analyzed to put what has been published thus far in perspective. A critical analysis of the facts leads to the consensus that methacrylate based resin sealers are here to stay and offer a suitable alternative to conventional endodontic treatment.

Comparative in vivo analysis of the sealing ability of three endodontic sealers in dog teeth after post-space preparation

This study compared the sealing ability of RoekoSeal, AH Plus and EndoRez in dog premolars after post-space preparation and exposure to the oral environment. Seventy-four root canals were cleaned, shaped and filled with gutta-percha and one of the sealers. Post spaces were prepared with about 4-mm root canal filling remaining in the apex. Teeth were sealed for 24 h for sealer setting. Teeth were exposed to the oral environment for 45 days. The dogs were killed and root canals were soaked in India ink and sealed for 96 h. The teeth were cleared, and leakage was measured under stereoscopy. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used for analysis. A significant difference was found between EndoRez and RoekoSeal groups (P < 0.05). EndoRez had lower leakage values than RoekoSeal after 45-day exposure to the oral environment. No statistic difference was found in the comparison of AH Plus with the other sealers under study.

Push-out bond strengths of the dentine–sealer interface with and without a main cone

AIM

To evaluate the push-out bond strength of the dentine-sealer interface with and without main cone for three resin sealers.

METHODOLOGY

Thirty extracted maxillary premolar teeth with two separate canals were prepared using 0.04 taper Profile instruments to size 35-45. Teeth were divided into three groups for filling using AH Plus, EndoREZ or Resilon sealers. In each tooth, one canal was filled with a matching single-cone technique, and other was filled with sealer alone. A 1 mm slice of mid-root dentine was prepared for the push-out test. Failure modes after push-out were examined under microscopy and field emission-scanning electron microscopy. Data were analysed using two-way anova and paired t-tests, with significance set at P < 0.05.

RESULTS

Overall, the epoxy resin-based sealer provided the highest push-out bond strengths. Push-out bond strengths were significantly higher (P < 0.001) when canals were filled with sealer alone than those filled with main cone and sealer (AH Plus 6.6 and 2.0 MPa, respectively; Resilon 3.4 and 0.4 MPa; EndoREZ 0.9 and 0.4 MPa). Sealers appeared to behave differently as thin films in association with a main cone, compared with bulk material. They failed in cohesive mode within the thin film, leaving a layer of sealer on the canal surface. Bulk sealer showed predominantly adhesive failure at the dentine-sealer interface, with a clean dentine wall and with resin tags either partially pulled out or sheared off at the interface.

CONCLUSION

Push-out bond strengths of resin sealers were much lower when the sealer was present as a thin layer.

Leakage of 4 resin-based root-canal sealers used with a single-cone technique

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to measure leakage of 4 resin-based sealers.

STUDY DESIGN

Four groups of premolars (n = 60) were prepared using GT Rotary files and the crown-down technique and filled by the single-cone technique with AH26, AHPlus, EndoREZ, and an experimental MBP as sealer. Leakage was measured using the fluid filtration method after 15, 30, and 60 days and determined as microL/min(-1) x 10 psi.

RESULTS

Statistical analysis by ANOVA and Tukey HSD test indicated that root fillings with AH Plus and the MBP showed lower leakage values after 15 days (P < .05). At 30 days, AH26 presented higher leakage values when compared to other sealers (P < .05). At 60 days, MBP and AH Plus presented the lower leakage values, differing significantly from EndoREZ (P < .05).

CONCLUSION

It was observed that AH Plus and the experimental MBP showed lower leakage after 60 days than AH 26 and EndoREZ.

Sealing properties of two contemporary single-cone obturation systems

AIM

To compare the sealing of root canals filled with two single-cone obturation systems and a warm vertical compaction technique.

METHODOLOGY

Forty-two single-rooted teeth were decoronated to obtain 17-mm-long root segments. The root canals were cleaned and shaped to size 40, 0.06 taper and filled with: (i) warm vertical compaction with AH Plus (control); (ii) ActiV GP and (iii) GuttaFlow with single master cones. Leakage was evaluated by fluid filtration at 10 psi before root resection, and after 3, 6, 9 and 12 mm apical resections. Repeated measures anovas on ranks and Dunn's multiple comparison tests were performed to examine differences in fluid flow rates amongst different resection lengths for each filling technique. The surface and interior aspects of glass-ionomer filler-coated ActiV GP gutta-percha cones was evaluated with SEM.

RESULTS

No statistical difference amongst the filling techniques was seen at 0 and 3 mm root resections. ActiV GP and GuttaFlow exhibited more leakage than AH Plus at 6, 9 and 12 mm resections. AH Plus recorded the best overall results. A nonhomogeneous coating of glass-ionomer fillers on the surface of ActiV GP cones was detected.

CONCLUSIONS

The two single-cone techniques examined are as effective in sealing the apex as AH Plus when the latter was used with warm vertical compaction. It is further hypothesized that the inferior coronal seal of these single-cone techniques may be improved with the placement of accessory cones to reduce sealer thickness or an immediate coronal adhesive restoration.

Influence of moisture on the apical seal of root canal fillings with five different types of sealer

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of moisture on apical leakage using five different types of sealer. There were 120 single-rooted teeth instrumented to .02/#60 and randomly assigned to 10 experimental groups, one control group (AH Plus, lateral condensation) (n = 10) or positive/negative controls (n = 5). Before obturation teeth were dried thoroughly, followed by recontamination with moisture in a wet chamber (moist groups; 37 degrees C for 7 days). The teeth of the experimental groups (a, dry; b, moist) were obturated with sealer (groups 1, AH Plus; 2, Apexit; 3, Ketac-Endo; 4, RoekoSeal; 5, Tubli-Seal) and a single gutta-percha cone .02/#55. Teeth were centrifuged (30 x g for 3 minutes) in 5% methylene blue. Linear dye penetration was measured under a stereomicroscope. Moisture led to less microleakage for Apexit, RoekoSeal, and Tubli-Seal and higher values for AH Plus and Ketac-Endo. Multifactorial ANOVA displayed a significant dependence of leakage on sealer (p < 0.001) and the combination sealer or moisture (p < 0.01). It depends on the sealer type in which way moisture affects the apical seal.

An In Vitro Evaluation of the Apical Sealing Ability of a New Resin-Based Root Canal Obturation System

The purpose of this study was to assess the apical sealing ability of the new resin-based Epiphany-Resilon root canal filling system, and to compare this with the sealing abilities of different pairings of AH plus, gutta-percha, Epiphany, and Resilon. Seventy extracted human single-rooted teeth were used. All teeth were instrumented using a set of ProTaper rotary instruments. The canal spaces were filled with different combinations of core and sealer using lateral condensation, as follows: group 1, AH Plus + gutta-percha; group 2, AH Plus + Resilon; group 3, Epiphany + Resilon; group 4, Epiphany + gutta-percha. Apical leakage quantity was measured with the computerized fluid filtration meter. Statistical analysis indicated that Epiphany gutta-percha combination had the least amount of microleakage than all the other groups; AH Plus gutta-percha combination proved to have second least amount of microleakage among the groups. AH Plus-Resilon combination demonstrated the greatest amount of microleakage. There were a significant difference between Epiphany gutta-percha and AH Plus-Resilon combinations (p < 0.05). It was found that there were no significant differences between Epiphany-Resilon combination and all the other groups (p > 0.05).

A comparative study of physicochemical properties of AH PlusTM and EpiphanyTM root canal sealants

To evaluate setting time, solubility and disintegration, flow, film thickness, and dimensional change following setting in a dual-cured resin root canal sealer Epiphany compared with an epoxy-resin-based sealer AH Plus.

METHODOLOGY

The experiments were performed according to ANSI/ADA Specification 57 which tests the physicochemical properties of endodontic sealing materials. Five samples of each material were tested for each of the properties. In addition, deionized distilled water from the solubility test of Epiphany was submitted for analysis of the cations Fe, Ni, Ca, Mg, Zn, Na, and K in an atomic absorption spectrometer. Three samples were analysed.

RESULTS

There were no statistical differences (P>0.05) in flow (AH Plus: 38.57 mm; Epiphany: 35.74 mm) and film thickness (AH Plus: 10.6 microm; Epiphany: 20.1 microm). The solubility (AH Plus: 0.21%; Epiphany: 3.41%) and dimensional alterations following setting (AH Plus: expansion of 1.3%; Epiphany: expansion of 8.1%) were statistically different (P<0.05). The setting times of both sealants were in accordance with ANSI/ADA requirements.

CONCLUSIONS

Setting time, flow, and film thickness tests for both cements conformed to ANSI/ADA standards. Dimensional alteration test for both cements were greater than values considered acceptable by ANSI/ADA. Epiphany values regarding solubility were also greater than values considered acceptable by ANSI/ADA.

Is An Oxygen Inhibited Layer Required for Bonding of Resin-Coated Gutta-Percha to a Methacrylate-Based Root Canal Sealer?

Removal of the oxygen inhibition layer from the surface of resin-coated gutta-percha cones during packaging has been hypothesized for their weak adhesion to a methacrylate-based root canal sealer, resulting in their frequent delamination from the sealer after root canal obturation. This study examined the feasibility of creating oxygen inhibition layers on resin-coated gutta-percha cones via the adjunctive application of a dual-cured dentin adhesive just before bonding. Composite cylinders were bonded with EndoREZ to flat, resin-coated gutta-percha disks and similar disks that were post-treated with Prime&Bond NT Dual Cure adhesive and stressed to failure using a modified microshear testing design. Although shear strengths for both groups were relatively low, a 5-fold increase in shear strength was observed after adhesive application, with complex interfacial failures instead of complete sealer delamination from the resin-coating. In-situ dentin adhesive application appears to have merits in enhancing the coupling of resin-coated gutta-percha to methacrylate sealers.
