Abstract
Skin-to-skin care (SSC) is an important part of parent and infant care during the neonatal period and into infancy. SSC should be initiated immediately after birth and practiced as a standard of care in all settings, as well as in the home. There is strong evidence that SSC has a positive effect on breastfeeding and human milk feeding in both term and preterm infants, as well as on mortality, cardiopulmonary stability, and thermoregulation. SSC reduces pain and infant stress, enhances parent-infant bonding, has neurodevelopmental benefits, and has positive effects on parental mental health. The safety and feasibility of providing SSC has been established in term and preterm infants, and SSC is recommended as best practice for all infants. The benefits of SSC outweigh the risks in most situations, and despite challenges, care providers should implement procedures and accommodations to ensure that SSC occurs as a safe and positive experience for the parent, family, infant, and health care team. This statement includes all families as defined and determined by themselves, and recognizes that health communication, language, and terminology must be individualized to meet specific family needs by the health care team.

Abstract
Les soins peau-à-peau (SPP) sont un aspect important des soins au parent et au nourrisson pendant la période néonatale et la première enfance. Ils doivent être entrepris immédiatement après la naissance et faire partie des soins standards dans tous les milieux, y compris à la maison. Selon de solides données probantes, les SPP ont un effet positif sur l'allaitement et l'alimentation par du lait humain, tant chez les nourrissons à terme que prématurés, de même que sur la mortalité, la stabilité cardiorespiratoire et la thermorégulation. Les SPP réduisent la douleur et le stress chez les nourrissons, accroissent l'attachement entre le parent et son nourrisson et ont des effets bénéfiques sur le neurodéveloppement de l'enfant ainsi que sur la santé mentale des parents. Le caractère sécuritaire et la faisabilité des SPP sont établis chez les nourrissons à terme et prématurés, et ces soins sont recommandés dans le cadre d'une pratique exemplaire auprès de tous les nourrissons. Les avantages des SPP sont supérieurs aux risques dans la plupart des situations, et malgré les défis qui y sont associés, les dispensateurs de soins devraient adopter des protocoles et prévoir des adaptations pour s'assurer que les SPP soient une expérience positive et sécuritaire pour le parent, la famille, le nourrisson et l'équipe soignante. Le présent document de principes s'adresse à toutes les familles, telles qu'elles se définissent et se déterminent elles-mêmes, et tiennent compte de l'importance de personnaliser la communication, le langage et la terminologie en matière de santé pour que l'équipe soignante réponde aux besoins particuliers de la famille.

Abstract
Premature infants are at high risk for heat loss. Infants undergoing surgical procedures outside of the neonatal intensive care unit have an increased risk of hypothermia. Hypothermia can lead to delayed recovery, hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis, sepsis, and emotional stress for the parents. We aimed to reduce the incidence of hypothermia for infants undergoing surgical procedures from a baseline of 44.4% to less than 25% over 3 years (2016–2018) with the utilization of a checklist and education.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study aimed at assessing skin-to-skin contact (SSC) during the postpartum stay and its determinant factors among mothers at public health institutions in Ethiopia. RESULT A total of 384 mothers-indexed newborns admitted in postnatal wards were interviewed. The prevalence of mothers' SSC practice to their newborns with in the first 1 h during the postpartum stay was 28.1%. Mothers education (AOR = 18.23 [95% CI 5.26, 63.52]), and number of ANC visits (AOR = 8.55 [95% CI 1.05, 69.54]) were independently associated with SSC practice of mothers to their infants.

Abstract
Introduction: Preterm infants are unable to regulate their
body temperature and there are insufficient research evidences on different kinds of
covers for hospitalized preterm infants; therefore, the present study was conducted with
the aim of comparing the effects of plastic and blanket covers on the body temperature of
preterm infants under radiant warmer. Methods: This randomized cross-over clinical trial was
carried out upon 80 infants with the gestational age of 28-30 weeks and birth weight of
800- 1250 gr who were in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on the second day of their
hospitalization. The study lasted for two days. In group 1, the plastic cover was used
during the first day of the study while the blankets were used during the second day.
Infants’ heads were kept out of the cover and coated with a hat. In group 2, the plastic
cover was used during the first day of the study while the blanket was used during second
day. Digital thermometer was used to measure infants’ axillary temperature. The data was
analyzed using SPSS ver 13 and MiniTab software. Descriptive statistics, (Mean (SE),
95%CI) and inferential statistics (Repeated measurement and ANCOVA tests) were used. Results: The mean body temperature of the infants in the
group covered with the plastic was calculated to be higher and the warmer was set on low
temperature. Conclusion: Using plastic cover during the first few days of
hospitalization in NICU resulted in regulation of preterm infants’ body temperature.

Abstract
Background. In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) environment, preterm newborns are subject to environmental stress and numerous painful interventions. It is known that hydrokinesiotherapy promotes comfort and reduces stress because of the physiological properties of water. Objective. To evaluate the short-term effects of hydrokinesiotherapy on reducing stress in preterm newborns admitted to the NICU. Materials and Methods. Fifteen preterm newborns underwent salivary cortisol measurement, pain evaluation using the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS), and heart rate, respiratory rate, and peripheral oxygen saturation measurements before and after the application of hydrokinesiotherapy. Results. The mean gestational age of the newborns was 34.2 ± 1.66 weeks, and the mean weight was 1823.3 ± 437.4 g. Immediately after application of hydrokinesiotherapy, a significant reduction was observed in salivary cortisol (p = 0.004), heart rate (p = 0.003), and respiratory rate (p = 0.004) and a significant increase was observed in peripheral oxygen saturation (p = 0.002). However, no significant difference was observed in the NIPS score (p > 0.05). Conclusion. In the present study, neonatal hydrotherapy promoted short-term relief from feelings of stress. Neonatal hydrokinesiotherapy may be a therapeutic alternative. However, this therapy needs to be studied in randomized, crossover, and blinded trials. This trial is registered with NCT02707731.

Abstract
Background. The skin-to-skin contact (SSC) of mother and newborn is uncommon full-term newborns after delivering via cesarean section due to the possibility of hypothermia in the infants. The aim of this study was to compare mothers' and infant's temperatures after delivering via cesarean section. Material and Methods. In this randomized clinical trial, 90 infant/mothers dyads delivered via cesarean section were randomized to SSC (n = 46) and routine care (n = 44). In experimental group, skin-to-skin contact was performed for one hour and in the routine group the infant was dressed and put in the cot according to hospital routine care. The newborns' mothers' temperatures in both groups were taken at half-hour intervals. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and chi-square tests. Results. The means of the newborns' temperatures immediately after SSC (P = 0.86), half an hour (P = 0.31), and one hour (P = 0.52) after the intervention did not show statistically significant differences between the two groups. The mean scores of the infants' breastfeeding assessment in SSC (8.76±3.63) and routine care (7.25±3.5) groups did not show significant differences (P = 0.048). Conclusion. Mother and infant's skin-to-skin contact is possible after delivering via cesarean section and does not increase the risk of hypothermia.

Abstract
Appropriate thermal protection of the newborn prevents hypothermia and its associated burden of morbidity and mortality. Yet, current global birth practices tend to not adequately address this challenge. Here, we discuss the pathophysiology of hypothermia in the newborn, its prevention and therapeutic options with particular attention to resource-limited environments. Newborns are equipped with sophisticated mechanisms of body temperature regulation. Neonatal thermoregulation is a critical function for newborn survival, regulated in the hypothalamus and mediated by endocrine pathways. Hypothermia activates cellular metabolism through shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis. In newborns, optimal temperature ranges are narrow and thermoregulatory mechanisms easily overwhelmed, particularly in premature and low-birth weight infants. Hyperthermia most commonly is associated with dehydration and potentially sepsis. The lack of thermal protection promptly leads to hypothermia, which is associated with detrimental metabolic and other pathophysiological processes. Simple thermal protection strategies are feasible at community and institutional levels in resource-limited environments. Appropriate interventions include skin-to-skin care, breastfeeding and protective clothing or devices. Due to poor provider training and limited awareness of the problem, appropriate thermal care of the newborn is often neglected in many settings. Education and appropriate devices might foster improved hypothermia management through mothers, birth attendants and health care workers. Integration of relatively simple thermal protection interventions into existing mother and child health programs can effectively prevent newborn hypothermia even in resource-limited environments.
