Ice friction in speed skating: can klapskates reduce ice frictional loss?

Skating techniques of ladies' world-class long-distance speed skaters to shorten curved-section time during the official 3,000 m race

This study aimed to identify the factors contributing to expedited passage through curved sections in skating by analyzing centripetal acceleration and skating motions during curving in a 3,000 m race for ladies' world-class speed skating. It included 14 elite skaters participating in the ladies' 3,000 m race held during the World Cup. The recorded area consisted of the first inner curve lane. Skaters were recorded as they passed through the measurement range at the initial, middle, and final stages of the race. Three synchronized high-speed cameras were used to record skaters from the front, back, and side. From the images obtained by the high-speed camera, 21 body endpoints and 4 blade edges were digitized at 50 Hz using specialized digitizing software. Three-dimensional coordinates of the 25 points were obtained using a panning direct linear transformation technique. The stroke-averaged centripetal acceleration and kinematic parameters were calculated based on the three-dimensional coordinates of the body during the curve-skating motion. Centripetal acceleration had a significant effect on the curved-section time in all three race stages (initial: F = 17.19, middle: F = 23.30, final: F = 16.64) and significantly decreased as the race progressed (left: F = 9.42, right: F = 8.05). Throughout the race, the right and left shanks and the body's center of mass (CM) during the stroke were raised (shank angle: left: F = 13.62, right: F = 11.02, CM height: left: F = 21.15, right: F = 21.69). The body-tilt angle for both strokes and shank-tilt angle for the right stroke were significantly correlated with centripetal acceleration in all race stages (body-tilt: left: initial: r = 0.80, middle: r = 0.75, final: r = 0.89, right: initial: r = 0.78, middle: r = 0.84, final: r = 0.67, right shank-tilt initial: r = 0.80, middle: r = 0.77, final: r = 0.63). These results suggested that to reduce the skating time through curved sections, maintaining an inward body tilt and minimizing the decrease in centripetal acceleration even in the final race stage are crucial considerations. They also suggested that when leaning the body inward and maintaining centripetal acceleration, the right shank should be leaned inward for the right stroke and the left shank should be leaned inward for the left stroke, or the left blade should be positioned farther to the right of the CM.

A review of the physics of ice surface friction and the development of ice skating

Our walking and running movement patterns require friction between shoes and ground. The surface of ice is characterised by low friction in several naturally occurring conditions, and compromises our typical locomotion pattern. Ice skates take advantage of this slippery nature of ice; the first ice skates were made more than 4000 years ago, and afforded the development of a very efficient form of human locomotion. This review presents an overview of the physics of ice surface friction, and discusses the most relevant factors that can influence ice skates' dynamic friction coefficient. It also presents the main stages in the development of ice skating, describes the associated implications for exercise physiology, and shows the extent to which ice skating performance improved through history. This article illustrates how technical and materials' development, together with empirical understanding of muscle biomechanics and energetics, led to one of the fastest forms of human powered locomotion.

World Records: How Much Athlete? How Much Technology?

The quality of performance during international competitions such as the Olympic Games and various world championships is often judged by the number of world records attained. The simple fact that world records continue to improve is evidence that sports performance is progressing. Does this also mean that athletes are improving? Is the continual progression of world-record performances evidence that contemporary athletes are superior to the athletes who performed in the past? Technological developments may obscure insight into the athletic enhancement made by athletes over the years. This commentary tries to separate technological and athletic enhancement in the progression of world records by the use of a power balance model.

Human locomotion on ice: the evolution of ice-skating energetics through history

More than 3000 years ago, peoples living in the cold North European regions started developing tools such as ice skates that allowed them to travel on frozen lakes. We show here which technical and technological changes determined the main steps in the evolution of ice-skating performance over its long history. An in-depth historical research helped identify the skates displaying significantly different features from previous models and that could consequently determine a better performance in terms of speed and energy demand. Five pairs of ice skates were tested, from the bone-skates, dated about 1800 BC, to modern ones.

This paper provides evidence for the fact that the metabolic cost of locomotion on ice decreased dramatically through history, the metabolic cost of modern ice-skating being only 25% of that associated with the use of bone-skates. Moreover, for the same metabolic power, nowadays skaters can achieve speeds four times higher than their ancestors could. In the range of speeds considered, the cost of travelling on ice was speed independent for each skate model, as for running. This latter finding, combined with the accepted relationship between time of exhaustion and the sustainable fraction of metabolic power, gives the opportunity to estimate the maximum skating speed according to the distance travelled.

Ice skates were probably the first human powered locomotion tools to take the maximum advantage from the biomechanical properties of the muscular system: even when travelling at relatively high speeds, the skating movement pattern required muscles to shorten slowly so that they could also develop a considerable amount of force.

The Effects of Klapskate Hinge Position on Push-off Performance: A Simulation Study

PURPOSE

The introduction of the klapskate in speed skating confronts skaters with the question of how to adjust the position of the hinge in order to maximize performance. The purpose of this study was to reveal the constraint that klapskate hinge position imposes on push-off performance in speed skating.

METHOD

For this purpose, a model of the musculoskeletal system was designed to simulate a simplified, two-dimensional skating push off. To capture the essence of a skating push off, this model performed a one-leg vertical jump, from a frictionless surface, while keeping its trunk horizontally. In this model, klapskate hinge position was varied by varying the length of the foot segment between 115 and 300 mm. With each foot length, an optimal control solution was found that resulted in the maximal amount of vertical kinetic and potential energy of the body's center of mass at take off (Weff).

RESULTS

Foot length was shown to considerably affect push-off performance. Maximal Weff was obtained with a foot length of 185 mm and decreased by approximately 25% at either foot length of 115 mm and 300 mm. The reason for this decrease was that foot length affected the onset and control of foot rotation. This resulted in a distortion of the pattern of leg segment rotations and affected muscle work (Wmus) and the efficacy ratio (Weff/Wmus) of the entire leg system.

CONCLUSION

Despite its simplicity, the model very well described and explained the effects of klapskate hinge position on push off performance that have been observed in speed-skating experiments. The simplicity of the model, however, does not allow quantitative analyses of optimal klapskate hinge position for speed-skating practice.
