Granular cell myoblastoma of the esophagus after irradiation for carcinoma

Coexistence of esophageal granular cell tumor and squamous cell carcinoma: a case report

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are relatively uncommon, usually benign and solitary neoplasms. Until now, about 200 cases of esophageal GCTs have been reported in the literature. We present a rare case of synchronous occurrence of esophageal GCT and moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma in a 40-year-old white woman. The GCT was detected incidentally during esophagoscopy undertaken for evaluation of a 4-month history of progressive solid food dysphagia. The gross and microscopic appearance of the GCT was typical. It was localized in the mucosa of the middle esophagus dystally and separately to the cancer. It revealed strong positive immunostaining for vimentin, S-100 protein and neuron-specific enolase, as well as weakly positive focal staining for Ki67 and p53 protein. Although, the coexistence of esophageal GCTs and cancers seems to be coincidental, the necessity of a careful clinical evaluation and a close follow-up of patients with GCT is suggested.

Association of multiple granular cell tumors and squamous carcinoma of the esophagus: case report and review of the literature

This report describes the case of a man who underwent subtotal esophagectomy for the concomitant presence of a multifocal esophageal squamous carcinoma and a granular cell tumor (GCT); he had been previously affected by another metachronous esophageal GCT excised endoscopically. This is the sixth case described in the literature detailing other cases of a combination of malignancies involving additional organs. We emphasize the need for a prolonged surveillance of patients with multiple GCTs in order to promptly recognize the possibility of associated neoplasms.

Granular cell tumour of the appendix in a patient irradiated for a rectal carcinoma

We report on a 47-year-old man with a granular cell tumour of the appendix, discovered incidentally during surgery for a rectal adenocarcinoma that had been irradiated preoperatively. A detailed immunocytochemical analysis revealed positivity for S-100 and neuron-specific enolase (NSE). Electron microscopically, the cytoplasm of the tumour cells contained numerous pleomorphic lysosomes. In the appendix tissue adjacent to the tumour a neuroma and the histological features of radiation injury were present. Our findings suggest that this granular cell tumour may have originated from a pre-existing appendix neuroma which underwent granular degeneration, possibly as a result of radiation.

Symptomatic granular cell tumor of the esophagus

A case of symptomatic granular cell tumor of the esophagus is described. Another 32 cases collected from the English literature are analyzed. The reported cases have occurred mostly in women of less than 50 years of age presenting with dysphagia. Excision of the lesion is curative.

Granular cell tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and perianal region: a study of 74 cases

Seventy-four patients with 75 examples of granular cell tumors occurring in the gastrointestinal tract and perianal region were studied. Twenty-four were located in the esophagus, eight in the stomach, three in the small bowel, four in the appendix, twenty in the large bowel, and sixteen in the perianal region. Nine cases had multiple tumors either occurring in the same area of the bowel or in other organs, mostly the skin. Approximately 50% of the tumors occurring in the esophagus and perianal region showed varying degrees of acanthosis or pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. In the perianal tumors the pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia was much more extensive and could be mistaken for squamous cell carcinoma. The world literature was reviewed and a total of 66 cases of granular cell tumors were reported in the area of study. In neither our 74 nor the other reported cases was there evidence of recurrence or malignant behavior of the tumors, thus confirming their benign biologic behavior.
