Abstract
Chronic alcohol use has been attributed to the development of malnutrition. This is in part due to the inhibitory effect of ethanol on the absorption of vital nutrients, including glucose, amino acids, lipids, water, vitamins, and minerals within the small intestine. Recent advances in research, along with new cutting-edge technologies, have advanced our understanding of the mechanism of ethanol's effect on intestinal nutrient absorption at the brush border membrane (BBM) of the small intestine. However, further studies are needed to delineate how ethanol consumption could have an impact on altered nutrient absorption under various disease conditions. Current research has elucidated the relationship of alcohol consumption on glucose, glutamine, vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B9 (folate), C (ascorbic acid), selenium, iron, and zinc absorption within the small intestine. We conducted systematic computerized searches in PubMed using the following keywords: (1) "Alcohol effects on nutrient transport"; (2) "Alcohol mediated malabsorption of nutrients"; (3) "Alcohol effects on small intestinal nutrient transport"; and (4) "Alcohol mediated malabsorption of nutrients in small intestine". We included the relevant studies in this review. The main objective of this review is to marshal and analyze previously published research articles and discuss, in-depth, the understanding of ethanol's effect in modulating absorption of vital macro and micronutrients in health and disease conditions. This could ultimately provide great insights in the development of new therapeutic strategies to combat malnutrition associated with alcohol consumption.

Abstract
There are studies that present metabolic disorders in alcohol drinkers are associated with thiamine deficiency. Therefore, in the present study, it was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of thiamine in rats with binge drinking model. For this purpose, total 21 spraque dawley rats were divided into three equal groups as control, alcohol and thiamine+alcohol groups. The thiamine+ethanol group was given thiamine at a daily dose of 100 mg/kg by oral gavage, starting 2 days before the ethanol administration. Alcohol and thiamine+alcohol groups were given 3.45g/kg/day ethanol as 20%. At the end of the study, while serum total bile acid, total bilirubin and insulin levels increased in rats in the alcohol group compared to the rats in the control group; total protein and albumin levels decreased (P<0.05). In the thiamine + alcohol group, LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol, bile acid levels and AST enzyme activity increased, while ALT enzyme activity and total protein levels decreased compared to the control group (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant result in the values in the thiamine+alcohol group compared to the alcohol group. It has been concluded that acutely administered thiamine supplementation had no effect on alcohol-induced biochemical parameter changes in binge-drinking animals. In this sense, studies with longer-term thiamine use are needed.

Abstract
Over the last few years, there has been increasing interest in the possible beneficial effect of polyphenol consumption on neurodegenerative disorders. Because there is a clear impact of environmental factors on the onset and evolution of neurodegenerative conditions, food arises as a promising factor that might be influencing this group of pathologies. The mechanisms by which polyphenols can affect these processes can be through direct interaction with redox signaling or inflammatory pathways but can also be explained by the interaction of dietary polyphenols with either micro- and macronutrients that are known to have neurological effects or interaction with food contaminants or food-associated toxins, avoiding their neuronal toxicity.

Abstract
Myricetin is a flavonoid that has recently been suggested to induce sustained inhibition of proton-coupled folate transporter (PCFT/SLC46A1), which operates for intestinal folate uptake. The present study was conducted to characterize the inhibitory effect in more detail, using human PCFT stably expressed in Madin-Darby canine kidney II cells, to gain information to cope with problems potentially arising from that. The kinetics of saturable folate transport was first assessed in the absence of myricetin in the cells pretreated with the flavonoid for 60 min. The pretreatment induced PCFT inhibition in a manner dependent on the concentration of myricetin, where the maximum transport rate was reduced by 35.5% and 83.1%, respectively, at its concentrations of 20 μM and 50 μM. The inhibitory effect was, however, less extensive at lower folate concentrations, because the Michaelis constant was also reduced similarly in a manner dependent on myricetin concentration. The inhibition was induced depending on the time of pretreatment and, after removal of myricetin (50 μM) upon the manifestation of an extensive inhibition at 60 min, reversed almost completely in 90 min. This rather short time required for recovery may suggest that the sustained inhibition of PCFT is of a reversible type.

Abstract
Myricetin is a flavonoid that has recently been suggested to interfere with the intestinal folate transport system. To examine that possibility, focusing on its sustained inhibitory effect on proton-coupled folate transporter (PCFT), the uptake of folate was examined in Caco-2 cells, in which PCFT is known to be in operation, in the absence of myricetin in the medium during uptake period after preincubation of the cells with the flavonoid (100 μM) for 1 h. This pretreatment induced an extensive and sustained reduction in the carrier-mediated component of folate uptake, which was attributable to a reduction in the maximum transport rate (Vmax). Although the affinity of the transporter for folate was increased at the same time as indicated by a reduction in the Michaelis constant (Km), the change in Km was overwhelmed in extent by that in Vmax. Consistent with the finding, folate transport by human PCFT stably expressed in Madin-Darby canine kidney II cells was reduced in a similar manner with simultaneous reductions in Vmax and Km by myricetin pretreatment. Attention may need to be given for a possibility that such a sustained inhibition of PCFT could potentially be a cause of the malabsorption of folate and also antifolate drugs.

Abstract
Polyphenols are a group of widely distributed phytochemicals present in most foods of vegetable origin. A growing number of biological effects have been attributed to these molecules in the past few years and only recently has their interference with the transport capacity of epithelial barriers received attention. This review will present data obtained concerning the effect of polyphenols upon the transport of some compounds (organic cations, glucose and the vitamins thiamin and folic acid) at the intestinal and placental barriers. Important conclusions can be drawn: (i) different classes of polyphenols affect transport of these bioactive compounds at the intestinal epithelia and the placenta; (ii) different compounds belonging to the same phenolic family often possess opposite effects upon transport of a given molecule; (iii) the acute and chronic/short-term and long-term exposures to polyphenols do not produce parallel results and, therefore, care should be taken when extrapolating results; (iv) the effect of polyphenolics in combination may be very different from the expected ones taking into account the effect of each of these compounds alone, and so care should be taken when speculating on the effect of a drink based on the effect of one component only; (v) care should be taken in drawing conclusions for alcoholic beverages from results obtained with ethanol alone. Although most of the data reviewed in the present paper refer to in vitro experiments with cell-culture systems, these studies raise a concern about possible changes in the bioavailability of substrates upon concomitant ingestion of polyphenols.

Abstract
Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin with a crucial role in the synthesis and methylation of DNA and in the metabolism of several amino acids. In the present study we investigated whether beverages like wine, beer and tea, or some of their specific constituents, affect the intestinal uptake of (3)H-folic acid or (3)H-methotrexate (an antifolate). All tested beverages significantly inhibited the uptake of (3)H-folic acid by Caco-2 cells. Most of these beverages, with the exception of wines (not tested), also inhibited (3)H-methotrexate uptake in these cells. Additionally, ethanol, when tested separately, inhibited the uptake of both compounds. Some of the tested phenolic compounds, namely myricetin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and isoxanthohumol, markedly inhibited (3)H-folic acid uptake. Myricetin and EGCG also had a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect upon the uptake of (3)H-methotrexate by Caco-2 cells. Resveratrol, quercetin and kaempferol were able to inhibit the transport of both compounds, but only in the concentration of 100 microM. In conclusion, dietary constituents may impact on intestinal folate uptake, as here shown for phenolic compounds.

Abstract
Moderate consumption of red wine has been associated with beneficial effects on human health, and this has been attributed to the flavonoid content. Factors that influence the bioavailability of this group of polyphenolic compounds are therefore important. Using the rat cannulated everted jejunal sac technique, we have investigated the effect of alcohol on the intestinal absorption of quercetin and its 3-O-glucoside from red wine. Tissue preparations were incubated in whole or dealcoholised red wine, diluted 1 : 1 with Krebs buffer for 20 min at 37 degrees C, after which the mucosa was removed and processed for HPLC analysis. Tissues exposed to red wine had significantly higher amounts of both quercetin (x 3; P < 0.001) and quercetin-3-O-glucoside (x 1.5; P < 0.01) associated with them, compared with sacs incubated in the dealcoholised equivalent. In addition, both tamarixetin (T) and isorhamnetin (I), in the mucosal tissue from sacs exposed to the whole wine, were significantly elevated approximately two fold (P < 0.05; P < 0.01, respectively). Similar results were obtained when sacs were incubated in Krebs buffer containing a mixture of pure quercetin and quercetin-3-O-glucoside with or without alcohol, and, although effects on the apparent absorption of Q and Q-3-G were not so marked, concentrations of the metabolites quercetin-3-O-glucuronide and I were significantly increased by the presence of alcohol (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively). It is therefore plausible that the moderate alcohol content of red wine contributes to its beneficial health effects in humans by both increasing the absorption of quercetin and quercetin-3-O-glucoside and by channelling their metabolism towards O-methylation to yield compounds (T and I), which have potential protective effects against cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
